How I capture high speed hair shots in the studio

- ✨. Today’s shoot is all about capturing hair…but not just any hair, bouncing, lovely super gorgeous hair in motion!
Now there are a couple of things to take into consideration when trying to capture hair in motion and that is what I’ll demonstrate today!
Even though I'll be demonstrating on the Canon R5 with continuous drive mode, the techniques here are still applicable to a wide variety of gear and your camera may have a comparable "high speed" mode, so I urge you to check if it does.
Using a high speed mode is going to let me capture around 8 frames per second which is fantastic for as my model tosses and moves her hair about.
There is however another major point to consider…what about your strobes, how are the going to keep up?
You’ll have to select lights with a fast recycle time and this is where cost consideration comes in. Lesser expensive strobes might not be able to keep up and have fast enough recycle times to properly expose your photos, so if capturing high speed images is something you'd like to do, definitely make sure they can!
Here I’m using the Profoto D2’s which have an extraordinarily fast recycle time and as I shot these images, I just held down the shutter and fired away with every shot correctly exposed! Pretty neat if you ask me. 😆
💡 Lighting:
I’m using a 3 light setup for this hair shoot:
✨ The main light is a Profoto D2 with a Magnum reflector up high, very high. Why you ask? Because it’s going to sculpt both the hair and the fact giving them more dimension.
✨ My second strobe is a Profoto D2 with a Zoom reflector. This is used to fill in the shadows on the face and give the hair a little more glow.
✨ Finally my 3rd strobe is a bare bulb pointed at the backdrop.
A relatively simple setup with some more advanced technical considerations.

I love Lindsay's idea's very inspirational, for a smaller home studio you could use more budget-friendly options such as Godox AD300/200 which have a recycle time 0.01 - 1.5-2.1 Seconds with a flash duration of 1/10000-13000 but you will have to use low power and potentially a higher ISO to compensate

Prophoto is the best, no doubt about, I use 2 Godox QT 600 in speed mode. Not the same, but a good strobe. Learning and studying to grow. Thank you for your generosity sharing your knowledge 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

@@pellier08 hi! So...I usually shoot dancers, and I go for a single shot because my eye is trained for that ( I have been a dancer all my life). So I am interested is shooting motion. I see some dance photographers that use flash duration, others HHS. Depending on what I am shooting, I use both ( depending on the situation )
BUT ... What if I have to shoot some movement that I am not really used to ( gymnastics, sport )...then I might need to rely on a powerful burst of shots.
And... While my camera is really fast ( 10 shots for a second - sony alpha R IV ), my Godox strobes are not up to it...
The recicle time is not comparable. So yes, It was really useful to see how profoto works, and how it works with a fast mirrorless camera. I use godox monolight in speed mode. It is good, but, in the future, I would like to be able to buy a profoto, because it is actually better ( I think ) . So... Lindsay's video showed me how and where to place the lights, how she sets them, and she showed how actually she did the shooting. She could have done the same in single shots? Yes, I think so. But showing different ways and thinking outside the box is something I like and appreciate. This wonderful fashion photographer is helping a dance photographer ( and many others I believe), so yes, to me, It was really helpful. I hope I answered your question.

I just purchased a Godox QT 300iii strobe for freezing motion. I have a Nikon D750 and my camera shoots 6fps in continous high. Is that the limit on how many shots I can capture?? Is there a work around where I can shoot more fps with my freeze flash strobe ( as it has the capability)? I'm new to shooting like this but I want to shoot hair in motion and now I can with the flash. Also what is the best focal setting to shoot in? Thank you for the amazing video! This a bit of a complex question to answer. Basically yes the max you can capture is 6fps but that should be more than enough for hair. There is a work around capturing more flashes but in a single frame (stroboscopic effect which isn't what you are looking for). Focal length all depends on your compression-- I'm usually around 50-70 for these sorts of shots Best!
Great shots! For my B10 Plus strobes to keep up with the R5, I will need to keep the power down. Lindsay, on the R5, what is your comfort zone for ISO as I suspect I will need to bring that up some for proper exposure? Also, where did you have your apretaure set in these shots?
She is using hard silver reflectors, not softboxes so probably getting decent enough output to stick to 100-200 ISO and still get a decent aperture like f8/f11, would be interesting to know the settings though.
At 56 seconds the back of camera shows 1/200sec, F11 and ISO 200 .... So looks like it's a nice dark room, close flashes on lower power output, so instead of needing HighSpeedSync the very short flash duration will be freezing everything and making it sharp.
That's not really accurate. Just because it's at a high shutter speed would not freeze the action and expose the photo like you're suggesting without high speed sync.

Isn't HSS only needed for shutter over the 1/200 ? If you were using HSS as your reply suggests, what was your shutter? Thanks for the help in understanding your set up better!
@@TheDanHB Apologies that wasn't clear. I was using a fast flash duration in the freeze mode of my strobe. Shooting at F/11 ISO 400.

Another interesting thing to note… I love how you use High Speed Continuous in this instead of HSC+… HSC+ is 12 frames per second… And you mention HSC is 8… It's interesting because I tried my strobes with my R5 and had to dial down the power quite a bit for the flash's recycle to keep up with the camera in HSC+ (12fps)… It's a FABULOUS option we have to knock the camera down to 8fps to give our strobes a little bit more room to breathe! :D I mean, in this lighting setup with a magnum and zoom reflector, those lower power settings should be plenty. But man… The R5 gives such an amazing range of options!!
Amazing photos. Pro foto D2 is a costly piece of hardware for beginner photographers. Is it Ideally possible to use lowest output number of a strobe to freeze actions so as to apply high recycle speed throughout the photoshoot and balance the exposure in post production?
Check out some of the comments below about other options of fast flash duration strobes.
At 0:56 you can see that the camera settings are f11, shutter speed 1/200 and ISO 200.

You can achieve it with other equipment. This was simply a demo using what I use. It was more about using high speed sync and a flash with a quick recycle time.
I'm sure you can. This is just what I choose to use. I didn't say you can only do this with Profoto. ;)
Oh I guess you've forgotten something... the HUGE budget to purchase 3 Profoto strobes !!! 😉
You also welcome to research other options, and even people in the comments have suggested some. I think I'm allowed to show the gear I use. smh. :P

Are you shooting high speed sync? What is your shutter speed?
I explain everything in the video. The camera is using continuous drive mode.

That is irrelevant, what matters is your flash t0.1, shutter can even be 1/20 if room is dark and t0.1 is 1/20.000

With a sync flash, how did you manage to shoot faster than 125/s (since they're moving) without getting that black bar caused by too high shutter speed when syncing flas? Dont laugh, my equipement is going to be upgraded.

For anyone using Godox/Flashpoint strobes, the 400 Pro and 600 Pro especially have plenty of speed with both recycle time and flash duration for these speeds! In that system, having the Color Accuracy Mode turned OFF (which it is by default anyway) is the Godox equivalent of Profoto's Freeze Mode. It's perfect in this demo that this is using reflectors and a bare bulb that don't have diffusion because it keeps the power output that is needed for the shot down, and at those low powers, Flashpoint will easily keep up as well! Including with super fast flash duration!
I also LOVE how this uses the R5's super fast frames per second! One thing to note is OEM and native lenses like the RF lenses actually generally focus way faster and more accurately to where they can keep up with the eye tracking at really high continuous mode speeds. Especially as we start getting into the upcoming R1 which will reported have as much as 40 frames per second, 3rd party or DSLR lenses can slow a camera down with focusing. Adapter EF lenses will likely be slower too. That RF 24-105mm is PERFECT! 😍
The Godox QT400II, QT600II, QT800II and the QT1200II monolights have the same short flash duration ability like the Godox AD400 Pro and AD600 Pro, also the AD1200 Pro, so you have a lot more options, to do freezing action photos with Godox monolights.
Yup. I just use what I use. I suggest others find something that suit them there are plenty of options.
@@bp-blackshark The problem with that end of Godox's lineup is currently none of them have a pro-grade stable color mode. The stable color option on those is +-200K which is what the higher end Pro lineup has with color mode OFF. While these may provide some options with creative stuff like fast flash duration, I prefer my strobes to be engineered with color accuracy in mind. With the 200/300/400/600/1200 Pro strobes, Color Accuracy is around +-50K.
@Aries I'm not entirely sure because I never use that, but a quick web search suggests that's when you want the strobe to fire repeatedly creating multiple exposures in one image!
@@longliveclassicmusic The Godox AD1200 Pro, AD600 Pro and AD400 Pro have 5600K +-75K in stable color temperature mode, the AD300 Pro and AD200 Pro only 5600K +-100K in stable color temperature mode. But that can only be supportet in non high speed mode, so it is probably much worse than you think. The non Pro line QT400, 600, 800 and 1200 have 5600K+-200K in stable color temperature mode, but are showing 5600K - 9000K color temperature in high speed mode...i didn´t find any high speed color temperature data in the Pro line.
Its cool to have have a lot of money and gear to do the work for you. But with for example an godox ad400 pro that is a fraction of the money and a good hand for capture the right moment you can do the same. Just don´t think you nead a D1 and a R5. But is cool just to have that and let the gear do the job. But I like Lindsay work and if I can I will buy the best money can buy too. But I will prefer have an Hasselblad medium format with better colour and use my hand to get the shoot. If I have the money.
I do, however, feel there is a place to showcase what high end gear is capable of and show what I actually do in my job rather than just the cheapest. Know what I mean? I think just showing the cheapest even if you dont use it is fine, but not always required or even genuine.

That is a good brand with good products but with ridiculous prices. And you will se if in 3 or 4 years the prices will not change or they will lose a lot of the market.. But I understand you. @@GNDavid73 That's not really the point of the video though... you're arguing on why spend more money on equipment when something else can do it ... but that is true with everything in life. A car can get you to the same place, yet we have choices, options etc. I find that most people argue that I showcase "expensive" gear but that is just because I found that is what I LIKE and therefore what I USE. To each their own.

My comment is just because in the video you are selling Profoto: ....my Profoto.... with my Profoto..... and my Profoto. Daniel Norton sometimes says : i receive money every time I say the word Profoto joking and it is like that. But it is what I say you are working. But I can give my opinion respectfully. I have a White, and a silver profoto Softlight reflector. And a Magnum. But i buy chimera softboxes and godox lights. I wold like to buy an Hassemblad medium format with lens if I can.
