Excellent presentation.Organized, systematic, and detailed, Clear illustrations to demonstrate key points. It is great to see an master studio photographer at work, manipulating/"shaping" light to produce stunning images. Articulate. Very intentional. No fumbling around.
What grids also do is, if you shoot with just a soft box you can vary the look of the shadows and vary the feeling of drama to a photo by moving a soft box closer or further away. The same as standing a few inches away from a window vs standing a few feet back from a window. So if you want a stronger shadow for more drama, but want to maintain soft highlights, move a soft box away from the subject till you get the look you want. But if you don't have much room, add a grid to the soft box to make the light more directional but still keep the softness of the highlights.
Great video Lindsay Adler! After picking up a camera and discovering a world of shapes and forms one starts realizing how light comes into play. This presentation show us how to create details to an image while making it look natural and effortless. Thanks for always sharing such great content in the ADORAMA channel.
😎👍🇨🇦 I bought a box of grids for my Speedotron heads, I misplaced them for sometime, I found them when I was flipping around my mattress. Now they are safely tucked into a bag for future use.
Yes amazing tutorial from Lindsey Adler… However most photographers don’t have that many lights not to mention those are profoto lol over $2000 a pop. I’ve used many different lights going back to even speedotron ppl now I’m dating myself but for the new shooters I would like to see tutorials using more reasonable lights. And yes the example applies to all light sources but lots of new shooters especially the ones who rely on RUclips tutorials usually use what they see. Amazing stuff Lindsay 💯👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
You don't need $2000 worth of lights. Grids can be used on any lights typically, no matter the cost. I use what I use because that is what I like, but the techniques shown here are universal.
Awesome!! Good refresher course to take you next level at home or rental studio. Thanks for having these training videos. Kudos to Lindsay, Adorama, and her team for great content.
Thanks for your video...though I am not a pro photographer, I am always trying to learn about lighting for halloween home haunts that I do. Your teaching style is so easy to follow, and I appreciate how you explain the "before and after" with the grids. I will def be looking for your videos!
I can't wait to try this! Where did you get that gold backdrop? The Products Used section doesn't exactly align with what's being featured in the video. Thanks!
Awesome tutorial Linsday. I never used grids, even though I have them, but now I'm definitely adding them. Guess I'll be signing up for your tutorial now 😉👍
Guess I'll take another look at how this light combo brought out this dress from not much light to wow it brought out texture so nice: mainly how to uses a fill light is so important, the background light brought a real touch of chic in my opinion_ without it it's a portrait _with the back light it looks chic fashion
This one video literally is the answer I been looking for OMG LIKE I truly love you for this I’m definitely signing up to your lighting course. You are truly phenomenal. I can’t thankyou enough!!!!
beautiful presentation and explanation, you’re so good at making things clear and easy to understand, thank you so much for this video Adorama and Lindsay, you’re doing a great job and helping us so much by doing so :)
Another great tutorial, clears all the doubts with regard to grids. Thanks for that. However I would have loved to see a value addition by mentioning the flash power settings of each flash. It helps a lot in learning for new comers. Mainly the difference between Key light and other lights. Though it can be learnt by trial and error method, it would have been a great value addition to this tutorial. I checked the article also, couldn't find the info.
The video is primarily about the use of grids therefore the power settings weren't relevant in this context. The shoot was just an example. I encourage you to try it on your own and dial in your settings. :)
Cool. I guess I'm so old school. I grew up shooting for playboy and we used grids like a religion. There were days when we would use a dozen lights and we would grid like crazy.
Lindsay, I love listening to you and absolutely love the way you teach! (The fact that your photos make an electrifying impression I will not even mention😀) I have a request for you: can the music in your films be a bit quieter? When you finish speaking, the music is very welcoming and when you speak again, you are hardly heard. Best wishes😃
I shoot primarily in my small-ish living room. I would be completely lost without grids on all of my modifiers. Without them, light bounces all over the room and makes everything flat and boring, no matter where I point the flashes.
Great video - thank you! What background are you using for the final shots with the model in the reflective dress? It's definitely NOT the Savage Universal White that is mentioned in the 'products used' section. Is it a painted canvas?
I’ve been inspired to get more creative with Lindsay’s videos. I’ve recently purchased several modifiers for studio strobes. What kind of hooks are on the wall to hang the reflectors etc?
Love your comprehensive explanation on grids and how to control light. Quick question: could you have substituted an octa with a grid for the second beauty dish on the lower part of the dress?
Excellent tutorial! Time to break out the grids. I’ve only used them a few times and only on the key. I just hadn’t given much thought to utilize them with my fill or kicker. Off-topic: may I ask about the backdrop? It’s beautiful and the texture adds another layer of dimensionality to these gorgeous portraits.
Lindsay, I travel a lot for on location shoots, and I want to try this technique with my A1’s. I have five of them. Do you think I can achieve similar results?
Grids do not eliminate flare. Flags eliminate flare. Grids eliminate off axis photons from leaving the modifier. It will also lower the overall exposure. Think of a grid as a polarizer, for your lights.
Thanks for a really interesting and instructive video. I'm curious if there are times when you would avoid the use of a grid. Are there artistic strategies for which you want the light to spill more?
The cheapest modifier is a seven inch reflector, and then you buy a set of grids. People really need to learn the principles of light before they start buying multiple modifiers.
I wouldn’t say a grid concentrates light because that sounds a bit misleading. All it does, is it narrows the light beam down. You get less light output with a grid and the light falloff is altered as well. Otherwise a superb video!
You are by far the best photography teacher I have ever had. Thank you ma’am.
Wow!! Great video. Thank you so much. Best one on grids I’ve seen.
Excellent presentation.Organized, systematic, and detailed, Clear illustrations to demonstrate key points. It is great to see an master studio photographer at work, manipulating/"shaping" light to produce stunning images. Articulate. Very intentional. No fumbling around.
Is she paying you to say this? Just Joking. I agree with what you said here. Beautiful work.
Every video Lindsey appears makes me speechless. Her lighting skills are absolutely remarkable. My number one reference in portraits today!
She is the best on her passion.
Thanks for sharing. Shalom!

I have learned so much in this video alone😳

Highly informative! Even though I’m not shooting Vogue covers, I am interested in perfecting my craft. Will be getting more of your tutorials.
Thanks so much!
So inspiring! Makes me want to break out my grids and have some fun!

Simply Amazing!!! Thank You!
I love that background oMG
Hi Lindsay
You are really great. Pl give more classes. Regards

Really good video. Thanks.
Excellent info! Do you ever use the beauty dish grid in conjunction with the sock being over the dish?
I like how you hang your modifiers on your wall, how do you hang them?
Beautiful
wxcellent video. also you can put a grid on your camera by using a circular polariser filter. Im sure there are studio applications for this.
Great video - thank you! What background are you using for the final shots with the model in the reflective dress? It's definitely NOT the Savage Universal White that is mentioned in the 'products used' section. Is it a painted canvas?

What kind of backdrop did you use? Love the colors on it.
Superb.
Great video Lindsay with lots of great info on grids! That gold distressed background is AMAZING! Could you post where you purchased it? Thank you!
Gravity Backdrops! Tell them I sent you. :D
Beginner photographer here , I noticed you didn't mention your flash or trigger much and their functions and settings, any specific reason?
Love your comprehensive explanation on grids and how to control light. Quick question: could you have substituted an octa with a grid for the second beauty dish on the lower part of the dress?
That would probably be fine. I usually find the beauty dish does give a bit more control with the grid, but I think it would be quite similar.
Fantastic
Where to get this beautiful golden metallic background?
Learned alot thanks
Lindsay Adler top Tutor

I'm a beginner... where do you put the flash light ?
Lindsay, I travel a lot for on location shoots, and I want to try this technique with my A1’s. I have five of them. Do you think I can achieve similar results?
so helpfull, thanks u so much
Grids do not eliminate flare. Flags eliminate flare. Grids eliminate off axis photons from leaving the modifier. It will also lower the overall exposure. Think of a grid as a polarizer, for your lights.
❤❤❤
You could always use that first metal grid to strain your spaghetti when your done shooting ;-)
Thanks for a really interesting and instructive video. I'm curious if there are times when you would avoid the use of a grid. Are there artistic strategies for which you want the light to spill more?
That usually just means bouncing the light so it goes everywhere!
💗💓💗
❤
The traditional Hollywood photographers and those doing it today use continuous lighting to get their effect, not strobes.
The cheapest modifier is a seven inch reflector, and then you buy a set of grids. People really need to learn the principles of light before they start buying multiple modifiers.
A seven inch reflector would indeed be extremely cheap…
I wouldn’t say a grid concentrates light because that sounds a bit misleading. All it does, is it narrows the light beam down. You get less light output with a grid and the light falloff is altered as well. Otherwise a superb video!
you crazy! 2 beauty Profoto Dish? hell naaaah!
Awesome!
