Had to comment and subscribe. This year is the year I am wild camping, something clicked with me and I think it will give me back some of what I have lost in recent years in the outdoors. Looking to keep it local on a few fells nearby in the spring but assembling my budget gear over the winter. Your videos are an inspiration and the delivery is perfect. You are a true advocate for the hobby. All the best man. Stay safe.
Thanks mate - yes, I think we're all planning on doing more on what we maybe should have been doing in years gone by this year! Good luck in your wild camping adventures mate and ATB
Great vid mate, I actually carried me dinghy up to small water next to haweswater on a wild camp, rowing round the tarn watching the sun come up is a birthday I will never forget, keep up the great work matey.
Brilliant! All about getting out . I had an outdoor store selling camping, fishing and hunting equipment. Guys spend a fortune and don’t use it enough. The purchase most be used regardless of how much it cost . Getting out is what it’s all about 🇮🇪👌
Two nice blokes enjoying some beers in the great outdoors. No complaints here. But the video title and the intro suggest a "compare and contrast" exercise. If I was considering spending £30 or £800 on a tent there's nothing in the video that would help me make that decision. Ease of construction, weight, comfort, features. These are just a few things I would expect to be covered from a video that's titled and introduced in such a way. Not meant as a criticism, just an observation. Glad you enjoyed yourselves and got a taste of that freedom we've all been missing.
Fair enough mate, we just wanted to show it can be done with cheap gear and enjoyed just the same. Maybe a more in depth comparison for a future video. Thanks for watching 👍
Great video chaps! Can’t beat it can you. Fair play lugging that weight around! You’re right about the kit though. It’s great to be able to spend a bit more on kit and enjoy the benefits the price offers but in no way is it essential as you’ve demonstrated. Only done the lakes a couple of times, from Coniston to Keswick, setting up at sprinkling tarn. Absolutely beautiful. I’ve got a craving for that beer you were supping at the pub! Take care! subscribed!
Brings back memories, I slipped and totally soaked one foot in the stream, before we went up pike o stickle, and along the ridge of crinkle crags, and Bow fell,.. It was a day hike tho, not camping,, we were so glad the old dungeon ghyll was open at the end of the walk,, lol,,, Great video btw,, just subbed... Cheers,,,
Good video, good subject. We've got several Mountain Warehouse Backpacker tents in our family that we use up on Dartmoor. Bought several years ago. Each cost way less than £100 and have never let us down. Never seemed necessary to upgrade. Cheers.
My first tent was a Gelert as well - could hack it for more than two nights - I was claustrophobic in it - I came home and gave it to my neighbours kids.
Believe it or not Terry, Matt has been using that for many, many years and it has never missed a beat - I bought it originally but didn't fit in it :-)
That’s an amazing location! But think the walk would have killed me 🤣 it’s great to see you encouraging people to get out no matter the budget and having a good time.. I have probably spent about £200 for the entire kit for me and my son and we have already had one trip with memories to last a lifetime.. and I’m sure we will have many more to come, and as kit wears out or I find it’s too heavy I will replace as we go if needed.. keep up the awesome video’s mate 🍻
Thanks for watching mate. You don't have to spend a lot to get out and enjoy it - we're happy to spread the word about our Great Outdoors and encourage others to enjoy it respectfully and responsibly - always leaving nothing but flat grass and taking nothing but memories and photos. Hope you and your lad get out again soon. ATB - Chris & Matt
Well! When you parked by that little old bridge I knew exactly where you were - just near the main camp site where I took my now wife camping in 1979. We now live in Oz. Then the Old Dungeon Ghill - fantastic food and beer in there! Love Langdale. Think I'm becoming a sentimental old fart. I should come back for a visit but Bat flu has seen to that for this year. Thankyou both for a triffic few minutes. From a new subscriber. You've both done very well - carry on :)
Hi - thanks for watching. We were lucky to get the last parking spot, it was very busy. Its a lovely camp site isn't it, I've stayed many times and have some great memories. As you say, the food (and beer), at the ODG is very good and it has a great atmosphere, especially in Winter when warming up by the fire after a long walk. Hope Oz is treating you well - ATB, Chris
Dude! I enjoyed that. A very well put together video. I can certainly appreciate the effort that went into making it. The angles, camera shots etc. Also the music choices were spot on! Good to see you enjoyed yourself as watched your reviews when you were in Lockdown and could see how much you were missing it. Atb. Gav
Thanks Gav, appreciate the feedback. I enjoy the editing process and it's always great to watch them back for the memories. It's certainly good to be back out. ATB, Chris
Chris, nice video pal and the message you make is clear. You don’t need to spend lots to get out wildcamping just do it respectfully. Enjoy the outdoors and #leavenotrace. ATB Andy
I was in the Langdale valley in Feb before it all kicked off with Covid. Bit different then. It snowed on my first night! Lovely part of the world. Great video.
Just bought the Hilleberg having watched your videos pricey but pleased with it. Just camped at Buttermere camp site to test it and other gear. Looking forward to my first wild camp. Thanks for advice and great videos.
Hi! Looking to get into wild camping myself and stumbled upon your channel last night. Great content with honest views! It's nice to know that it doesn't have to cost me a bomb too! Now to get myself a little set up! 👍🏼
Headed up to Angle Tarn last year for a wild camp and when I got there it was chocker block so I kept on climbing up to Allen Crags and what a reward that was best wild camp I've had , awesome views of sun going down and coming up in morning and both above clouds
There were 4 tents already there when we arrived, we got one of the last viable pitches. Your extra slog sounds well worth it - and just shows what unexpected things are over the next hill! ATB 👍
Incredible video! Cheers Guys, I really enjoyed it. I want to do my first wild camp with my 20yr old Son, I'm 55 and we have never been to the Lake District, I need to get out of London for a break! lol. Subed
@@MCMOutdoors You're welcome mate, I haven't been to the Lakes in years, its made me and a mate want to plan a trip there now :) Lovely little camping spot that.
I came down that ascent you did up to angle tarn after camping a few metres away from where you did back in march last year, bet coming up it was a proper killer. Underrated spot, the view down Langstrath valley is stunning.
Can I ask... At 14:20 when you add the water during cooking, are you using drinking water you brought with you? Or collecting water from the nearby stream? Stunning video mate! Greetings from Australia! Really enjoyed the high quality production/editing ( and of course the brilliant location ) ps. Olight are my go to for all my flashlights and weapons lights, fantastic quality and value.
Thanks for watching mate and greetings from the UK! Glad you enjoyed the video and hope you enjoy our others. Olight make some great products - ATB, Chris
Cracking vid as always Chris. I’ve not been out for ages now. I’m feeling this week might be the time to head back up the fells. Take it easy mate, keep up the good work 👌🏼
Fantastic views and scenery. I have spent a lot of hiking in the northern scandinavian mountain areas (being a Swede) and I thought that we were alone of such nature.
Thanks for the video. Good tip on not carrying too much weight up the slopes. Another good tipp could be that you don't need a tent at all with that kind of weather (and save 30 pound). The last tip: don't bring a 30 pound tent to a wintercamping trip.
Thanks Guys really enjoyed watching this. Last time I was in the Lakes we were with our daughter who is now married with 3 boys and one has just left Uni so its probably time to get back there. Seems I have also spent to much time motorcycling rather than walking I will need to get some fitness back before I even think about wild camping. Stay safe.
Another belter of a video Chris. I got out of breath with you on that climb and that's not doing my COPD any good lol. I love your vids cos they're straight to the point and with honest advice. Don't understand the 68 downers though. Jealousy maybe? Keep 'em coming Chris.
Thanks Alan, appreciate the feedback. Glad you enjoyed the video. Was certainly a tough climb up Rossett Ghyll. The old thumbs down are par for the course mate so no worries. ATB 👍🍻
Another good one. This format has a lot of potential. Maybe in future you could do a more head-to-head version where you went through pros and cons of your kits :)
I love mine - initially bought a large - then returned it as I looked like Tom Hanks in BIG when he turned back into a kid..... So got a medium which still allows me to fit warm layers under! Glad you like the olight!
Me and my fella did the exact same walk last Sunday! It’s the highest over ever gone up. I SO wish we could have camped up there! I’ve always wanted to wild camp, so thanks for the video, it’s given me a few more ideas 👍🏼
Great vid and good to see you back, that together with an awesome message, that so many commentators agree with below "It don't have to cost the Earth to wild camp" and I would add to anyone thinking about it but maybe a wee bit apprehensive...Guys/gals just do it, you will for sure feel better about you, your surroundings and the world around us that we have to live in. Well done lads, be safe.
Thanks Ed - I agree, it doesn't need to cost the earth, especially in the warmer months. It's just about getting out and enjoying it all - magical being out there, sat by the tent, taking it all in. Thanks for taking the time out to comment mate. ATB
What a stunning but very tough route up to Angle Tarn mate. Great to see you guys back out together. Both tents did a quality job didn’t they. The guy who is pinned hit the nail on the head when he said that your commentary style is very knowledgeable and interesting. You make top notch entertainment Chris. Nice job lads. 👍
Thanks Tim - I got the rechargeable battery and charging kit for mine - it's paid for itself already! Great bit of kit - so top purchase there. Thanks for watching mate. ATB 👍
Smashing spot and scenery. A wee river for a beer chiller is always an added bonus too. As you say, for not a lot of cash you can go to these stunning places in spring/summer. The more ££££ you spend then the law of diminishing returns kicks in. Winter? Well you know that’s when the extra ££££ matters. ATB👍
Thanks for watching mate and yes, agree - late Autumn / Winter starts to become the time when the extra £ needs to be spent, although that Gelert tent has withstood some horrific conditions at the same spot, in March about 9 years ago! Defo not advisable to repeat what we did though 😂 ATB
I started cutting pack weight- it makes a huge difference. Don't need to go ultralight or ultra expensive cutting from 18kg down to 10kg pack weight made all the difference for me mainly by reducing the big 3 weight and using a water filter and carrying less water. Depends how far you are walking though, heavier pack is prob fine for shorter distances.
Subscribed! Personally I enjoyed the video and can totally relate. I reckon some folks missed the point on the contrast. The full video was about getting out and enjoying it, which you guys did.
Thanks David - you definitely got the point of the video - which was simply to illustrate that we're out there - enjoying the same experience, with different ends of the gear spectrum - was a crude comparison only. ATB
I'm new to your channel, great videos though, I've enjoyed watching a load of them the last few days, they've made me want to get out again as often as I can! Good effort!
Nice video. I'm a pond away and a little rusty on my accents of the UK. I'm curious about yours and your mates. I'm hearing Skouse ,especially on the U, as in thumbs up. Also detecting some Welsh lilt as if you're something inbetween.
Hi there - firstly, thanks for watching! Second, not a bad ball park guess - I grew up just outside of Liverpool so that's where that comes from.... As for Welsh, well my surname is Welsh and my great great ancestors came from there. So there you go! ATB mate
Great video made me smile. Great inspiration for what I feel when I go to dartmoor. I don't drink regulary. I have a northern monk while I speak into the camera as a ritual before I go to bed.
When were you guys there? We camped there 2 weekends ago as well! And olight still hasnt sent me the review unit yet sadly. Looks like a really good light, been looking forward to test it out as well.
Loving the video, going to be going through there in a couple of weeks and I’m going to be using and Osprey and my mate using a mountain warehouse bag. So we may do a review of that as well haha
Thanks Richard - we just wanted to demonstrate that you could go and do it all, with a much cheaper setup. Maybe a detailed comparison for a future video.
Hi, great video as always. Where did you park your car overnight? Looking to do a similar camp at either Angle tarn or Stickle tarn, just weighing up the car parking option. Thanks 👍
Thanks mate - I just parked in the layby near the bridge in Great Langdale - no spot is guaranteed there though - I'm not sure if the national trust allow overnight stays mate, worth checking.
Great vids mate. I bought a Gelert Mongoose tent about 16 years ago for a very decent price. I used it for ages - even up in the mountains of Skye. I've moved on now but a great entry level tent that performed way above what I expected. Think the company has changed a lot since then though.
Yes everybody has to start off and if it's a hobby your gonna do alot you upgrade and replace kit, mind I wished I known more on weights and space things take up before bought stuff but hey being out in nature what it's about not how much your gear cost
Hello, I am a Korean backpacker. In the meantime, I've been watching your RUclips channel, and I'm envious of you I'd like to go there in a beautiful Mother Nature. It's a pity that all the people on Earth are suffering from the Corona virus right now suffer. Please continue to show me good videos. ·Goodbye.
Subbed. Thanks for the great content. Loving the commentary from your guys, very down to earth and personable. Also appreciating the editing. Good contrast between the pov talks and the scenery. Fantastic hyperlapse by the way towards the end of the vid! Love it guys. By the way, are you both from the wirral/ merseyside?
From the Merseyside area mate. Thanks for watching, we've been doing what we enjoy in the Great Outdoors for almost 25 years now and about 4.5 years ago, I decided to start filming our little trips out. ATB mate
Really nicely produced and 'shot' video. Good advice re weight and the climb. Can I ask, please - as I'm new to wild camping/backpacking, would you advise taking a water filter if you knew there was a water source nearby?
Thanks for watching - it's basically personal preference mate. However, you will save yourself A LOT of weight by choosing to filter your own water - so if weight is an issue (and space), yes filter 👍
The best budget tent i have got is the vango helix 100 from costco. I paid 50quid on special buy its gone up now to 60 now... inflation. But it can be stripped down fairly light i think 1.2 or 1.3 kg by using a dry bag not not the one provided. Its been bomb proof to be fair even in awful weather aswell. The only real con with it is its front opening so is abit more tricky to get into, similar to gettin into a bivi bag with a A frame tarp
Super video again!! You know when you go to these places is there like a place you're 'supposed' to park your car by the start of the trail etc? Or how do you find out where to put it? Sorry if this is a silly question haha
Hi Chris, firstly - thanks for watching. There are usually lay-bys where you can park - but not always, it's a bit hit and miss. Just park legally, not obstructing anyone or any access / egress - and you'll be okay. Lot's of walks contain details of parking if you research them online. ATB
@@MCMOutdoors Oh of course!! I love nature and the environment wouldn't even think of leaving an area any different to how I found it. Ill follow you on Instagram too mate as that is what I use mostly out of social media. Stay safe.
Thanks Jack, there are a few NT campsites in the valley and also parking at the Old Dungeon Ghyll hotel. Cars parked on verges or obstructing are liable to be ticketed. Hope this helps
Cracking vid lads, looks like you've pinned that routine nicely, and always lucky to get that weather. I've got a Vaude Terraquattro 3P, bit big for a single person, but amazing for two, stands up to any weather, I do like my kit :-) I always feel that even a bubbling stream during the day, sounds like Niagara falls during the night though!
Thank you for watching. The stream was very loud during the night, but I find it relaxing. Was a great trip out and very memorable. I've never tried any Vaude tents but the ones I've seen look great and well made. ATB, Chris

Thanks for watching mate and taking time out to comment. My legs felt it on Monday morning - all good fun though. Great experience. ATB mate.
Cracking video, kidda :-) Great to see the ODG open again :-)
Open and serving lovely beer ! ATB
Well done guys - excellent vid. Made me realise how much I miss the Lakes.
Thanks for watching Kevin
Another great video Chris.
I got a H1 nova after watching your original review, great torch!
👍
Thanks Tim - I got the rechargeable battery and charging kit for mine - it's paid for itself already! Great bit of kit - so top purchase there. Thanks for watching mate. ATB 👍
Beautiful! Thanks for posting this.
Great video and location, I keep saying I will do a wild camp there everytime I pass Angle Tarn! Nice one ⛰⛺👍
It was a great spot in the end - looked at bit busy at first, but turned out great. 🏕️⛰️
What a great video so inspiring. You worked hard on that one mate but them view's looked fantastic you deserved them beer's 👍👍
Thanks for watching and taking the time out to comment! The beer was welcome after that seemingly never ending ascent! Glad you enjoyed. ATB
Agree mate, I'll try and shave bits where I can. ATB
Hi Michael - I always like to hear things like this - good on you and thank you for checking out our videos. ATB - Chris
ATB mate
hi i did that olight thing but never got a light or is it on a certain day ??
Hi mate, there was a sale on when I posted the video - best checking details on their site to see if it's still running.
Great video, I’ll be there myself next week, staying at the Great Langdale Campsite, incredible looking place!
Enjoy George, it's a lovely valley.
12:09 are there other campers on the left and on the right there? Trying to figure out what those red things are
Yes mate - there were a couple of other tents 👍
Great video made me smile. Great inspiration for what I feel when I go to dartmoor. I don't drink regulary. I have a northern monk while I speak into the camera as a ritual before I go to bed.
Sounds like a great night time routine to me! Thanks for watching Karl - ATB
Love that spot. Pitched my tent very close to where you did.
Lovely pitch isn't it - missing it already! Thanks for watching Dom & ATB - Chris and Matt
Another cracking upload, makes me miss the Lakes so much!
Thanks Steve - you'll be back out in no time mate, ATB
When were you guys there? We camped there 2 weekends ago as well! And olight still hasnt sent me the review unit yet sadly. Looks like a really good light, been looking forward to test it out as well.
Saturday night just gone - lovely spot. Hope your torch arrives soon - great bit of kit. ATB
@@MCMOutdoors Thanks man! Enjoy the outdoors!
Nice video, and it inspires to go out and enjoy the nature.👌👍👍👍
Thanks - appreciate your comment 👍
Really enjoyed... Subscribed... Great editing and film work.
Thanks Simon, really appreciate the sub and feedback.
Loving the video, going to be going through there in a couple of weeks and I’m going to be using and Osprey and my mate using a mountain warehouse bag. So we may do a review of that as well haha
Enjoy mate - thanks for watching
Great video but I was hoping got a comparison between the two tents.
Thanks for watching - sounds like your tent served you well. This one has shed some serious wind on a few occasions 👍
Yes everybody has to start off and if it's a hobby your gonna do alot you upgrade and replace kit, mind I wished I known more on weights and space things take up before bought stuff but hey being out in nature what it's about not how much your gear cost
Thanks for watching David 👍
nice video that buddy, hope to get up to the lake district when travel restrictions are lifted. ATB Kev
Thanks Kev 👍
한국에서도 잘보고 있어요 ᆢ대자연이 부러워요 백패킹 하기 너무 좋은 나라 늘 조은영상 감사해요^^^^^^^
Don't know what that means - but thanks anyway!
·Goodbye.
Nice one Chris, agree that it shouldn’t have to cost the earth. Particularly to begin with! Good effort you made it with the weight!
Thanks Simon, yes mate - budget is no barrier. Its only when you get obsessed like me that things get out of control 😂🏕️🍻👍
haha! Man I would love a Soulo, I'm around 6'4 - do you think I would fit? Seriously thinking about the Akto as a entry into Hilleberg
Check out the specs on the Hille website mate - the dimensions are on there for each tent. Think you may just be OK.
Thanks mate
I was just up the rd at the bottom of Helvelyn for a couple of nights ,,yeah the weather was a bit moody Fri -sat
We were luck with the weather Rick, turned out ace. Did you camp at Red Tarn ?
@@MCMOutdoors No pal had 2 nights at Thirlspot, cheap n cheerful
Enjoying your posts . Keep it up
Thanks for watching Dave - appreciate the comment.
What is the name of the Budget tent? Someone reply pls, I didn't catch it if they mentioned it somewhere
Gelert Solo
What gas burner where you using?
MSR Reactor
Great video, you had great weather.
But no chance that kit was 15kg, I bet it was more at 18-20!
It was 15KG when I left the house - a few more beers went it, so I think you're right - ATB
I now understand why I struggled when I went up to Angle Tarn on 11th July. When I got back and weighed my pack and found it was nearly 25kg.
Jesus Christ 😂 and I thought mine was heavy. That's a legendary weight!
Sounds like a great bargain Mark 👍
Super video again!! You know when you go to these places is there like a place you're 'supposed' to park your car by the start of the trail etc? Or how do you find out where to put it? Sorry if this is a silly question haha
Hi Chris, firstly - thanks for watching. There are usually lay-bys where you can park - but not always, it's a bit hit and miss. Just park legally, not obstructing anyone or any access / egress - and you'll be okay. Lot's of walks contain details of parking if you research them online. ATB
@@MCMOutdoors Ahh ok brilliant thank you very much for the advice!
No worries - just get out - enjoy it - and most importantly - leave no trace. ATVB
@@MCMOutdoors Oh of course!! I love nature and the environment wouldn't even think of leaving an area any different to how I found it. Ill follow you on Instagram too mate as that is what I use mostly out of social media. Stay safe.
Brilliant video. Any suggestions on good overnight parking for someone visiting this area for the first time?
Thanks Jack, there are a few NT campsites in the valley and also parking at the Old Dungeon Ghyll hotel. Cars parked on verges or obstructing are liable to be ticketed. Hope this helps
Cracking vid lads, looks like you've pinned that routine nicely, and always lucky to get that weather. I've got a Vaude Terraquattro 3P, bit big for a single person, but amazing for two, stands up to any weather, I do like my kit :-)
I always feel that even a bubbling stream during the day, sounds like Niagara falls during the night though!
Thank you for watching. The stream was very loud during the night, but I find it relaxing. Was a great trip out and very memorable. I've never tried any Vaude tents but the ones I've seen look great and well made. ATB, Chris
good grief that is a hefty pack ...watched your last pack list two weeks ago what did you take this time round.
sorry it was the drink doh....lol
peace
Haha. Pack was heavy in itself plus 2.5L of water and 5 beers 😊
Loved this lads. Nice one.
Thanks for watching mate - ATB
MCM Outdoors Very enjoyable, miss my Soulo, sold it, but still got the Keron.
love this. especially as you have set up in the exact same spot i did in 1987 :)
It's a great spot isn't it Jon. Glad it's brought back memories.
Now that is wild camping..great video
Thanks Steve - was a killer getting up there, but well worth it. ATB - Chris
Brilliant another cracking video mate 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks Danny mate 👍
Lucky with the weather. I was planning for the 21st July. Half the days are rainy so not worth it in my opinion. Can't wait to get in them hills
We touched lucky there so can't complain. Hope you get out soon - ATB, Chris
Nice video.Enjoyed it a lot !!!
Thank you for watching 👍🏕️
Great video again Chris. That was a hell of a climb carrying that weight so the beers were well earned. Great looking location i have to say.
Thanks mate - was a killer climb up - but worth it for fitness and views. ATB 🍻👍
Superb video!
Cheers 👍
