  • Finally Adobe is allowing up to make really big canvases in Adobe Illustrator! We no longer need to scale down billboards, vehicles, and other large files because of the limitation of the software. We can finally work at 100% scale with the new 100X larger canvas! Learn how to make a bigger canvas in Adobe Illustrator.
    Here is the info on the larger canvas size limitations. The pdf parts are especially interesting:

    thanks! basically what i needed. So if i do have to make a print half-sized, does the DPI i save at matter? Sorry, not used to large scale work. Making a tradeshow booth for the first time. It's going to be large so ideally i should half-size it correct?
    Thanks!

    • @CrusoeDesignCo
      @CrusoeDesignCo  2 года назад

      There isn’t a single answer really, but in the past I’ve always saved it at a percentage of the final size and made sure the printer is aware. When it comes to DPI, you need to do the math and know what it’ll be at full size. So let’s say your printer says a trade show booth needs to be 150dpi, but you make your file 50% size. Then you want your raster images to be 300dpi. That way once blown up to full size, they’ll still print nicely. This is just an example.

      No problem! Just keep an eye out if you’re printing things. You need to save it as a new pdf (version 7 I think?) and some older printers and software won’t recognize it yet and they’ll make the file automatically 10%.

    Finally, after 20 years, adobe get rid of this ridiculous limitation! We have filed so many complaint about this artboard limitation over the years, just don't know what is the difficult part for them to change it....It's better for designer to create original size file especially for printing. I've experiences with some not so professional (encounter with small village printer nearby our event venue) printer doesn't know how to print by scale (or linked back the jpeg files)! Thanks for sharing!

    One thing you forgot to mention is that when copying from one illustrator file to another, and you have layers, you will need to go to layers palette, click on the the lines in the top right of the palette, then make sure "Paste Remembers Layers" is selected. This way all layers and names come over the exact same as the old document.

    These large canvas now import into InDesign at 1/10th of the size but say they are at 100%. Is there any way to get them to import at true size or at least for it to indicate that they're actually only 1/10 of the size?

    • @CrusoeDesignCo
      @CrusoeDesignCo  2 года назад

      Yes I think at the end of the video I explained that older versions of Acrobat PDFs will scale it to 10%. You need to use PDF Acrobat 7 or 8 when exporting.
      HOWEVER, even if you do that, you’ll still run into conflicts in other software until everything is updated to handle this new system. I guess InDesign falls under this issue, though I haven’t tested it myself.

    • @CrusoeDesignCo
      @CrusoeDesignCo  Год назад

      Yes that’s correct. The gray area is sort of the behind the scenes area where you can place elements you may not need to see. It’s nice to have that area to move elements around and keep pieces you may use later.

    When I import a large ilustrator file into an indesign work, the artboards are placed in 10% scale. How to deal with that?

    • @CrusoeDesignCo
      @CrusoeDesignCo  Год назад

      Honestly the large illustrator file is still a problem from what I can tell. A lot of software will see it at 10% scale.
      I’m also guessing you can’t make an InDesign page that large anyway, so it’ll need to be scaled down.

      It’s been a couple years since I made this video and from what I can tell, Adobe still has not implemented this larger canvas size well. When saving as a pdf with any older generation it still shrinks the art to 10% without really telling you I believe. I haven’t checked out tried modifying a new document again.
