- So… this one is weird. But most people hear the intro to Spirits in the Material World by The Police wrong… do you?
I’m gonna try to do one of these every Monday… you all have sent me TONS of suggestions. I got them on a spreadsheet and will slowly start Knockin em out.

This song is fucking brilliant.
This is one of the few I hear right the first time!
Same🎉
When you know The Police's fondness for reggae rhythm, you know you're hearing the accents on the up beat.
kick on 2 & 4
hh on upbeat 👍
Copeland himself said he couldn't daydream while playing this song!
Oh right the bass drum is on the second and fourth beat 😮" in levare " and hihat on the upbeat. This is one of the possible variants of the one drop technique. He uses it often. Thanks Jay your lessons are the best ones. Thanks again for all the stuff you teach us
Took awhile to get this one correctly and then promptly forgot it after a week.
Rufus/ Chaka Khan “Tell Me Something Good”
I’ve actually cover that one. ☝️
Ghost in the machine throws a few curve balls
Masterpiece
This one took me a while to hear correctly. But a good way to think about it is the kick being on 2&4
I was 9 years old when this song came out, since then I have lived that song.
Just follow the kick.
That's how I've always heard it. Just the natural pulse to me.
I've seen Stewart Copeland explain this.
Very cool. One oF The BEST!🥁🤘🎶
You finally did that one...cool!
"Why can't you just play 4/4?" -Sting
🎉🎉🎉
This song is essentially a ska song. It’s the same feel as ska until the choruses.
Wrong?
I hear all of it.❤
I've never played it with anyone or tried to count it, I just learned this, haha! Feel kinda dumb.
Are you able to count Al Di Meola's "Kiss my axe"? It would be great if you do.
So, what really hard is how to play this song the way Steward play.
Please do Bodysnatchers by Radiohead. I can't, for the life of me, find the downbeat.
The first electric guitar note in the song is played on the and of 2, I would say.
That’s a good one. It’s in 5/4. This means a down beat isn’t heard every other measure like in other timings. That makes it hard.
Radiohead has a few syncopated songs. Their best being pyramid song
I knew that from Day 1!
You Just Figured that Out?
Lol
Actually, if you’re a Gen X’er, no surprise to us. We heard the last version because we were Walkman kids. You can hear the last one quite clearly on your Walkman vs. just listening to it without headphones and we were a generation glued to our headphones! And playing air guitar and drum solos! 😂 so it’s probably a surprise of the generations after us because as X generation, we were in deep in music during our time, and we heard all the little nuances of beats, riffs, in voices, etc, with our headphones!
I was gonna reference that same video . But you on it 🤣
Always fucked me up as a kid.
I only hear it the right way, there is no other way of hearing it !!
I can typically get the snare drop right without counting it out . Its tough if you haven’t heard it in a while however
You're the best dude
Stewart was a f-ing genius!
Do next, Seven Days, Sting 🥁
This really screws with the head as for counting, but, thanks for your consistent response to helping us drummers with said problems, cheers fella❤❤
I've always heard it the correct way.
surely no one hears it the first way?
Idk.. I’ve gotten a lot of requests for this one.
I highly doubt it.
@@lex.cordis The thing that always got me was the intro fill. it sounds like &(triplet)3&4... But it's really 3(triplet)& 4&... and then after that, the time is just funny because they don't give you beat 1.
@@Thedrummersalmanac The intro fill is definitely odd, but after tthat I find it pretty straight forward, to my ears anyway.
That's actually exactly how I was hearing it when I first listened to it--with kicks on the & of 1 and 3. Thanks for going over this song!
How would a human being listen those keys on down tempo!!!!????
It's obvioulsy a SKA...
C'MOOON...
In fact there are many people that can't even clap their hand on tempo. The harcore level is to teach them clap on 2 and 4. But they deserve to enjoy music...
Years of playing the bass to this, and…same thing with Bring On The Night…the bass doesn’t feel quite right for a good measure.
I couldn’t count this song in to save my goddamn life. I can find ONE fast enough, but Copeland opens it up on the weirdest beat…
I cant hear it the wrong way. 😅 Snaps are on the upbeat to start the vid.
I heard it right!
I have a lot of trouble trying to hear it the first way
Even when you’re hear at the right way, it still feels weird 😂
It's like they are all playing in three different time signatures...it's not meant to fit ..but somehow it does ..
Oh, so it's just like the pre outhru of Stair way.
😂😂😂👍
For what to do next, on a similar vein, analyze the song "Videotape" by Radiohead. It might seem a normal song but there's something interesting there, let's see if you find it is interesting enough to analyze it.
Can you please do Tales of the Destinies by BabyMetal…it’s a total brainf**k
I've never, even once, listened to it the "wrong way" The wrong way is for people who have absolutely no rhythm sense.
On the serious side by tower of power…
I actually feel sorry for anyone who hears that offbeat as an on beat. 😢
i can t hear it in an other way.
I can't understand how people hear it wrong. It's fast reggae
Just listen to the bass line
Always heard the kiks on 2 & 4
But Stew count 1 2?? 😂
I can't tell the difference
Brother snaps his fingers like his palm owes him money 💥
I get a lot of help from the compressor lol 😂
The “right way” is how I’ve always heard it. Maybe that’s why I’m a musician🤔😁
So it's syncopated what's the big deal.
This intro is…
I never got that song. Way to much Radio of it. I'm sick of 5 seconds of it
I don't understand any of this, it's utterly ridiculous & pointless.
Easy, ska
The intro to Time by Pink Floyd I always hear wrong!!!!
