he said: some years ago he saw Tokio jazz on TV and he was like "what? A japanese girl is performing?" Well after a couple of seconds of listening to her I was astonished. I hope I'll live long. Long enough to see a lot of her performance. Tomorrow I am gonna buy "Kenkou-hou" book (book that teaches how to live long, maybe?) (I am not a native english speaker nor a japanese native, so I hope this message got through)
after having played a lot of gigs with really odd meters, the one thing i can tell you is that not everybody is a mental mathematical freak like hiromi and can keep themselves stable like she does. oftentimes, when your bass player is rock solid, you're locking in with him the whole time. for example, with brad mehldau's trio work, often it seemed that jorge rossy and brad got caught up in their rhythmic motifs, and only larry grenadier was able to pull it all together in the end. it's great.
She is just rythmical wild cat of Piano. But this "XYZ" is the most favorite-tune of H Uehara within in her piano-play. It's soooo funky-tastic=funky+funtastic ! ha-ha...
Could not agree more. This piece, in this video in particular, is mesmerizing... Over the top chorus, odd 9 meter, beautiful intro/outro, fantastic sidemen... And SALSA CHOPS AND HAMMERCLUSTER ! Watched this so many times...
Completely psychodelic, beatiful music. I enjoy this kind of mood in compositions so much. A little bit disturbing, rich in dissonances and simply interesting. Greetings from Poland.
Saw her live in concert in osaka japan a few month ago. She is a genius with two brains! her bass player is the best ever. her guitar player was subbing but nailed all the parts on her recordings, her drummer was spectacular. All-in-all the best live performance I have ever seen! Plinkfloyd
i am never bored of watching this video. although she is so nice beautiful and sweet when she plays the piano she transforms into a monster and dominates the scene! i believe that martin and tony are the perfect match for her music. i'd love to see her play along with petrucci and portnoy just for once though!
Wow the woman is crazy , she's a crazy genious, a real monster in the good sense of the word ..she is so ground breaking, so perfect and her talent so infinite ..she is touching the limits here!! And we wonder what will she do next..she seems capable of doing anything and make it great..I admire her so much
...a meld of ELP, BRUFORD and CHICK COREA....unbelieveable musicianship...the best thing to happen to fusion in the longest time....thanks a million for posting this superb piece....
The way this song takes off 0:58 is one of the best parts of jazz music in general! So let's not forget the other amazing musicians that shine around the light of "godess Hiromi" :)
Auntchovi, I heard her at the Blue Note, NYC, last summer and she and her band were amazing! I also recommend hearing her live if you are able! Believe it or not, her hair was actually more subdued at the July 8th show!
@NogamiAya Pretty darn good. Lighter stuff than when she was with Sonicbloom, but it was still completely her style. She kept standing, sitting, throwing her weight on the keys, even plucking piano strings, and the entire time she stared up with a smile on her face.
my right hand is feeling carpal ghost pains just listenin to the bass player play that lick that long... thats a fun timing to hear and feel and would be fun to play with, thanks for sharing!
stupid ass youtube I have no idea how to respond to comments anymore and I'm not going to look up how to do it online either... the bass line is in 9/16 in response to Ben Papsun...
I was looking for Rush's XYZ and came upon Hiromi doing her version. I heard a lot of ELP's Brain Salad Surgery in this version. Hiromi always is beyond time, space and mind. Everytime I see her I just drop my jaw.
Awesome players and songs. BTW, I think it is XYG not XYZ, as noted Wikipedia, under Hiromi Uehara, under the album Beyond Standard. Regardless, that's a minor point, and the music is what matters, and Hiromi is simply amazing by any title. Thanks for posting this!!!
@UncleePaulie where i applaud your eyes in realizing the nations ability to do so, i would not assume they do it better or more easily than anyone else, in short they have better p.r. being a leading country and having their ways of life spread more widely and more importantly more recognized has a lot to do with it, i mean just look around you will see droves of pseudo-Japanese kids, but i digress this is a good piece and she will be on piano jazz tonight i cant wait
I saw these guys at the Newport jazz festival (which must've been where 1bigstudmuffin was going). There was a mass exodus from the main stage when Mos Def came on, and we were all lucky enough to be drawn into Hiromi at the secondary stage before we exited. She and her superband made the entire day worthwhile.
I have this on CD, but it is a different experience to actually see Hiromi perform. She plays like someone possessed. It was amazing to see her play. I didn't realize she actually bangs the keys with her fist. While listening, the rhythm reminded me of King Crimson, which is a prog band with some members who have done jazz.
i seem to have triggered a lot of discussion on prog/jazz/rock and so on since my comment about Portnoy and Petrucci, let's just say it's something "i" would like to see -and of course there is a great number of musicians Hiromi would be great to play with- and i can't really see the reason for arguing! i personaly LOVE Hiromi either solo or with her trio or with Sonicbloom! i am sure that Hiromi would love play, inspire and get inspired with all great contemporary jazz/rock/metal etc. musicians
@ConfinedAbrasion only if you discount Progressive, IMO. Yeah, most rock and metal bands follow a predictable set of chords and progressions, but bands like Dream Theater, Rush, King Crimson and all of the Progressive Rock / Metal bands use the creativity, innovation, and dedication that jazz musicians use in their music, which makes it so versatile.
I wonder if there's a video available of the first musicians that played with her on Another Mind, Tony and Martin are great, but those where geniuses too.
the problem is that most of the kids dont really have a relationship to music, they're just impressed by the styles and the vieos etc. they dont really know what music is and for what music is there so i can understand KRsoundismusic
I haven't listened to all their albums so you probably know better than me about this. I do think though... more than the types of chords... it's the rhythmic qualities... the accents, timing etc... that feel similar between the two players. I guess it's more so the music itself overall that feels similar to me. Take this piece for example XYZ... there is definitely a progressive rock bent to it... that repeating bass riff... the odd time signature...
The problem is that opportunities to learn about music making are dwindling FAST - and, moreover, instead of making time and creating opportunities to introduce this kind of fantastic musicianship and sheer exhilaration, idiots like us bemoan the fact that the sky is falling and blame the next generation without accepting our responsibility for raising it. The only things that LIVE are SHARED and SURVIVE because they are SHARED. Find someone this week you can share this with.
This performance makes me want to dedicate my life in creating a time machine, so that I can bring Beethoven back with me just to show him this video.
The part where just hammers the keys with her fist will probably be an highlight of the event
Tony Gray's bass performance is amazing, not to mention Hiromi's piano.
I usually listen to only rock, but I was impressed by this performance.
I heard her in New York City last month. Words can't describe how incredibly talented she and her group are.
Wow...With the keys and drums going in and out of mad polyrhythmic phrases you gotta love how the bassist just holds it down!
Finally, a song that can bring jazz fanatics and headbangers under one roof.
Check out Tigran Hamasyan’s “Entertain Me” it you want more head banging jazz! You’re welcome 😊
+ukiuki8 And a bunch of crazy wacky letters to you too!

That bass and piano unison sounds like an updated version of Tarkus (ELP). Everyone in this band is a monster player!

Never have I seen such technique and excitement in performance of composition.
何回聴いてもピアノやっぱおかしくて草
かっこよすぎて昇天する

Sorry for misspelling my feedback.
Fixed: within in her piano-play=× within her piano-plays=○

Pues...Quisa...El tempo largo...

Man, I feel sorry for the drummer, having to keep it together in a crazy time signature like this.
He does it too :)

XYZは不動の名作、全ての要素を詰め入れたジャズの欲張りセット
I've viewed this video many times and it's always gripping.
No holds barred.
ロックしか聴いてなかった若い頃、初めてアルバムを聴いたとき1曲目がこれで度肝を抜かれました。
Re-visited 2022 still fire!
Not even some amazing Brazilian calypso piano is going distract the bass player from locking into that bass groove. He's steadfast as hell.
eccellente, brano straordinario di una difficoltà estrema, tutti bravissimi, grazie per la pubblicazione.
Обалдеть как играет! Что-то невероятное. Bravissimo!!!
Amazing Hiromi... She's the best...
Wow the woman is crazy , she's a crazy genious, a real monster in the good sense of the word ..she is so ground breaking, so perfect and her talent so infinite ..she is touching the limits here!! Martin Valihora on drums! Cheers from Slovakia

Yes, they're called standards. They are pieces from tradition that jazz musician study and re-arrange in the moment of the improvisation :)
Nice hair.
Legend
I found you!
yeeee she's got some awesome hair x)
Auntchovi,
I heard her at the Blue Note, NYC, last summer and she and her band were amazing! I also recommend hearing her live if you are able!
Believe it or not, her hair was actually more subdued at the July 8th show!
This is amazing! I love her virtuosity!
@NogamiAya Pretty darn good. Lighter stuff than when she was with Sonicbloom, but it was still completely her style. She kept standing, sitting, throwing her weight on the keys, even plucking piano strings, and the entire time she stared up with a smile on her face.
¡Madre mía! Esto es lo más loco y hermoso que es visto/escuchado en varios meses
my right hand is feeling carpal ghost pains just listenin to the bass player play that lick that long... thats a fun timing to hear and feel and would be fun to play with, thanks for sharing!
that bass player ... he will not sleep tonight, all he hears all night will be that groove XD
Would you speak about drummer?

stupid ass youtube I have no idea how to respond to comments anymore and I'm not going to look up how to do it online either... the bass line is in 9/16 in response to Ben Papsun...
You, my good man, are discovering the awesome world of fusion jazz! :D
I was looking for Rush's XYZ and came upon Hiromi doing her version. I heard a lot of ELP's Brain Salad Surgery in this version. Hiromi always is beyond time, space and mind. Everytime I see her I just drop my jaw.

XYG is from 2008 Beyond Standard album, which is a reworking of this song, XYZ, from her 2003 debut album "Another Mind"
Hiromi has an experience with Czech Phil with clasical piano when she was 14..
She is inspiratinal!!
Je m'en lasse pas.....un seul mot....majestueux !!!!!
She laughs in the face of jazz tradition!
SuperChessGURU “Fuck the jazz too!”
(Legend of pianist on the ocean)
Hiromi dispara mi mente al infinito y más allaaa!
Когда Хироми начинает заводиться, ощущаешь вибрации настоящей джазовой игры,так она
бескомпромиссна в своём видении джазового исполнительства!
The talent without the equal. Her natural endowments. Mmm... amazing!
I saw these guys at the Newport jazz festival (which must've been where 1bigstudmuffin was going). Bravo .... Hiromi, Martin Valihora, Tony Grey... Superb
Obrigada pra você também 👍😘
I came up with this during an aikido training. Sorry in advance...: How do you call the piano virtuoso who does aikido? Hirimi Ukehara...
one-two-three... AND BANG! its just incredible love it love it

Caramba!!!!!
Essa japonesa toca muito bem!
Que Deus continue abençoando o talento dela!
Can't help not responding to her apparent joy while playing. Great.
@workistorture It's "XYZ", the first cut on Another Mind, from 2003.
I like so much the "can't be faster" 1-2-3 he gives at the very beginning!!!!!!!!!!!!!
23 people have some kind of serious medical condition... This is REAL MUSIC!
My face has just melted off.
RiDONKulousness.
i seem to have triggered a lot of discussion on prog/jazz/rock and so on since my comment about Portnoy and Petrucci, let's just say it's something "i" would like to see -and of course there is a great number of musicians Hiromi would be great to play with- and i can't really see the reason for arguing! i personaly LOVE Hiromi either solo or with her trio or with Sonicbloom! i am sure that Hiromi would love play, inspire and get inspired with all great contemporary jazz/rock/metal etc. musicians
i think it's 9/8 and then 3/4 for the last 3 notes, at a fast tempo. I LOVE THIS
Amazing: not my favorite jazz but one of my favorite pianists: Hiromi's a big

Haha! you're right!
I wonder if there's a video available of the first musicians that played with her on Another Mind, Tony and Martin are great, but those where geniuses too.
