I'd probably sleep well deep inside a cave. Christian monks used to go into caves to get away from the world and get closer to God, and I can see why.
One of the most frustrating aspects of this accident to me is that the area where John had gotten stuck was KNOWN to be dangerous. Someone had gotten stuck there before, but, fortunately, was small and thin enough to be successfully rescued. Like John, they had also mistaken that area for the Birth Canal which, while narrow, could be successfully traversed. That section of the cave should have been sealed off after the first person got stuck. Maybe if they had, John wouldn't have died.
I will never understand why people go into tunnels that are at all tight. If there's not enough room for me and at least a five year old to go through it abreast, I'm not doing it. Even then I probably would refuse.
This story breaks my heart. Him and his wife were visiting family to announce their pregnancy and he passed away. He didn't actually mean to go down that hole, it was an accident. He made a wrong turn. His wife eventually re-married and to this day is still being bullied for not remaining single the rest of her life even though his death wasn't her fault.
I'm sure john wouldn't have wanted his wife to be sad and alone for the rest of her life, forever a grieving single mother. people can be so mean, I'm sure john would have been happy to know his wife was able to find new love and happiness after his death. every love is different, finding a new partner doesn't mean she loved john any less.

Honestly, with how many times people kept getting stuck before that happened, and then having someone tragically lose their life because of being stuck it's for the best the whole thing was sealed off. I can't imagine only sealing one part and feeling comfortable about the fact that the man is still sealed back there while everyone goes about exploring the rest of the cave.
I've seen a few "Cave Tragedy" videos, but something about this one truly disturbed me. I knew of the Nutty Putty incident, so I'm gonna have to credit the narration and delivery of the information in this video. Congratulations Brew, I'm gonna avoid going into caves extra hard now!
So sorry for everyone involved. And I give a ton of credit to the man who became a stepfather to the two children. It's ALWAYS hard to be a step-parent, but stepping in when the biological died (and likely remembered as a superhero) has got to be near impossible.
I’m still confused as to how he got stuck in the hole in the first place. He was on his stomach. It was a tight tunnel. Wouldn’t his legs have stopped him from getting into the hole? Can’t bend the knees in that direction.
@BoB-13 He seemed a little down last week too. I think he's working too hard. Did you hear him say flamously tight near the start? At least I'm not the only 1 who's concerned for Brew.
Man, the fact they didn’t immediately install pulleys that where drilled and anchored into the rock with masonry bolts, rather than using quick setting cam pulleys, is terrible, and the fact that they used any part of the caves natural rock formations as load bearing systems for retrieval is an indictment on the rescue effort. You can’t say that they had to avoid fracturing rock either, because cams put huge amounts of pressure on natural fissures and cracks in the rock, and then using a rock arch as the final load bearing component is terrible…. To expedite the installation they could have also used Ramset nitrocellulose bolts on rock faces which are large, contiguous and unlikely to fracture from the installation of ballistic quickset bolts, while drilling the others on more fragile surfaces… My feeling is if a more expedited permanent pulley installation was installed, asap, and no reliance on rock formations as load bearing mechanical advantage points were used they would have saved him. Realistically, they had one chance to use a pulley system to pull him out of his predicament and had to do it fast to keep him as healthy as possible for the lengthy and arduous procedure of then having to extricate him by his feet backwards through a thin tunnel… Any failure of such a rope system on the first attempt at lifting would have resulted in injury and worsening the degree to which he was stuck… They should have foresaw that scenario.

Brew, make a video about the story of the Guna cave, also called the devils kitchen. A group of college boys went there and one of them fell 200 foot in the cave.
Caving is one of them things I will never do, even with experts, it's proper nightmare fuel for me knowing that you're in a place like that where the only way out is the way you came in, assuming you can get out again...
I mean they literally had to seal it. There's a dead body in their that will never be able to be retrieved. People could attempt to steal his bones and sell it.
Excuse me while I go throw up This is the stuff of nightmares, just hearing about it is uncomfy, and I’m usually the one who puts up with the uncomfy Rest in peace, John. This was a horrid way to go.
I went caving there once back in 2007 or so, and that place was awesome. Definitely found some claustrophobic places that freaked me out, and its sad knowing the man didn't make it back out.
As a single digit aged kid, I fell beside a gap between my bed and the wall. Trying to push myself out, I simply was not able to. I had to scream out for help, luckily my dad was home that day because he was sick with a bad cold. He yanked me out within 60 seconds, but it felt like ages. I can't imagine a whole day inverted.
No offense, but it doesn’t take a genius to know you shouldn’t go down a hole head first, especially in a cave 🤦🏻♀️ I knew this was all going to go horribly wrong when he kept going forward because he couldn’t turn around (because backing up wasn’t an option?) but when I heard he went down a hole head first? I was literally yelling at my phone… I knew he had made the most brainless move at that point. It’s a shame he didn’t know that.
He was inexperienced and anxious about the whole thing. I honestly doubt he wanted to go in first tbh. I think he was pressured into going into it first and it was the others that told him to go down there.
I knew a guy that was a pro caver.. he took me spelunking in an easy-for-beginner's cave.. It was my first and last. I saw it as pitch black and pointless.
I'm wondering if it was possible for his friends to pull him back to a point that he can turn around, at the time he told them to turn around. at least, shouldn't have tried to keep going at that point.. though I do have benefit of knowing what was going on and he wasn't aware..
I find it hard to feel sorry for him. I feel more sorry for those hurt by the situation, but I can't feel sorry for a man as dangerously impulsive as this. He cave dived once as a kid and thought he was good to go again now as an adult, 🤦🏿♂️. You only have one life people, so think before possibly wasting it so frivolously.
I disagree with the video's idea that caving is safer just because the chances of meeting an accident while caving is lesser meeting a car accident. This chain of thought is similar to survivor's bias. Countless vehicles move on the road everyday. Thus, higher chances of accidents occurring. How many people go caving on a daily basis? Also, people becomes complacent when they think the chances of accidents are slim. It is when people feels safest that accidents happen. That's why home is where most accidents take place.
Despite having seen this story already, it's still as horrible. This version also shines light on the many moments he could have made a different decision... nice touch for the aftermath
I can’t imagine the emotions of John and his wife during that time. This would be horrifying to experience. I hope his family is still healing alright from this and I hope John’s soul was able to escape the cave that his body couldn’t.

I mean they literally had to seal it. There's a dead body in their that will never be able to be retrieved. People could attempt to steal his bones and sell it.
I literally can't imagine this happening to me, seems like a horrible fate
Excuse me while I go throw up
This is the stuff of nightmares, just hearing about it is uncomfy, and I’m usually the one who puts up with the uncomfy
Rest in peace, John. This was a horrid way to go.
I went caving there once back in 2007 or so, and that place was awesome. Definitely found some claustrophobic places that freaked me out, and its sad knowing the man didn't make it back out.
I’ve got a big idea - what about sending cameras down these horrific deathtraps instead of meat robots. *Huge light bulb appears above head*
My brothers went in this cave when i was super young, they got stuck too, fortunately they are all still alive.
I feel like I'm suffocating by listening to this video
moral of the story, if you have dependents don't be selfish and put yourself in a dangers situations, otherwise don't get married
That was the first time Brew's ever said "rock and roll". 😄
"Wow she didn't even insult me."
Brew sounds surprised. Maybe Brew should invest in a new coffee machine that doesn't insult him 😅
I agree with capping off Nutty Putty and putting the marker there in John's memory. It keeps the place sacred. Like hallowed ground.
I really enjoyed this video. The algorithm hadn't fed me Brew in a long time.
If he knew wasn’t experienced enough whyyyy did he go there….stupidity
This is a horror story
Isn't it always.
I am glad the banter is back, missed those
As a single digit aged kid, I fell beside a gap between my bed and the wall.
Some people think life is a game, and that nothing bad could ever happen to them. "I know where I'm going, I know what I'm doing." Until you don't.
@@mathiasgreyjoy1611how do those people make it after 4 years old
He was inexperienced and anxious about the whole thing. I honestly doubt he wanted to go in first tbh. I think he was pressured into going into it first and it was the others that told him to go down there.
... as if I needed another reason to not go in caves
More like, another reason not to crawl into small spaces.
This episode had me so anxious...
I knew a guy that was a pro caver.. he took me spelunking in an easy-for-beginner's cave.. It was my first and last. I saw it as pitch black and pointless.
So happy the old style is back! Feels so personal
Ahh, I love brewing coffee.
Such a heartbreaking story. I had heard about him before, but it still breaks my heart. Poor guy 😢
Thank you for animating again!
yayyy brew is back!!
Even his animated self still looks like he gets no sleep and just surviving on coffee alone
This is why discussing tradegies is important not censoring with it being deemed inappropriate. Experience is key to making the right decision.
Many people fear dying alone in a hospital bed.
This man died doing what he loved, surroundd by people who cared.
OK! as a true crim and wired death lover. I have heard about this case so many time. BUT NOT A SINGLE ONE! has given as much insight to the case as this video witch I find funny as it's hosted by an animation and not a person's face XD so much resuch when into this and you can tell. Thank you to your whole team! 😊 loved the watch
I don't need videos like this to *cement* my decision to never get in any caves whatsoever
7:16 I started having a panic attack... this is not the subject for someone with claustrophobia.
2:36 I forgot how funny and rude Howard could be😂
I'm afraid of getting stuck under my bed. This is a fear I can't comprehend. I like to explore caves, even tho I don't live near any, but I always stick with tour groups.
