A Woman Lived with Her Dad's Corpse for 30 Years, Without Realizing It

- Police officers in Tokyo, Japan, were mortified to find a mummified corpse inside a home, which had been there for the last 30 years. The family claimed that it was their grandfather’s wish to follow an ancient Buddhist monk practice; meditation so deep that he would reach Nehan, or Nirvana.
Why would a family seal their grandfather away, alone in a room without food or water for 30 years? How did he become mummified, and how did the Japanese government never find out? This is the story of how an incident led to a manhunt of over 200,000 lost people.

I lived in Japan, and hear this was rather common for famlies to not report the deaths of older people so they can continue to collect retirement pay.
I heard such stories from many different countries. Usually it's a bad idea, because once government finds out it takes back all extra money.
@Old Cat if all they do is take back the money, that's not much of an incentive to report it lol. Worst case, they pay back what they made. I'm sure more likely they'd be punished but yeah
@babaG819 actually it can still be dangerous in that case because rarely do people just hold onto all of the extra money. Potentially you're looking at thousands of USD (or the equivalent of another country's denomination) that you may not have.

Wait... does this mean that Japan is considered one of the oldest populations, population wise, because of poor census data?
I guess that is the secret to them living long lives and making the west think their lifestyle is the reason why they live so much longer than the rest of us.
By birth rates alone, we could determine the demographic data of a country.
Birth rates is almost surely recorded by hospitals.
No, it really has one of the oldest on average
No, but I like that idea.
The oldest people seems to be concentrated on the rural areas especially Okinawa, instead of big cities like Tokyo.

@@ASHERUISE smells so bad the house won't catch on fire?
The man was mummified. While it certainly wouldn't have smelled good it's not such contaminating smell like decomposition
@NowiTheDragonLoli if a crime scene is never cleaned and there is no way for the decomposition to be naturally cleaned, such as by vermin, it would continue to stink. I think you misunderstood as well, he was not mummified he wanted to become a living mummy which is not the same thing. He just starved to death but nothing prevented him from decomposition
Well, the room had been locked for 30 years, so most of the accumulated stink from all that time was still in there.

There's wide distrust of the "My Number" system here in Japan, because it poses all the privacy risks that Social Security numbers pose in the US. It certainly doesn't help that a lot of payment services are now trying to convince people to link their My Number card to their services, possibly opening the door to individual tracking beyond the use of their services and the creation of the awful kind of credit score system that US has.
If it makes you feel any better, many countries have some sort of "my number" but not the USA (corporate owned) credit score system. That's a foreigh concept here, too.
Yeah, it's a trap, don't.
I wouldn't do it either but I was born with a number
Yeah our SS system definitely has a TON of security flaws and especially gives people an in to prey on elderly people who might be a bit confused about how it works or might not be mentally as sound anymore. There's things in place if that sort of fraud is discovered but the problem is if there's no one checking up on elderly in person then the chances of figuring out they've been taken advantage of are really low.
Basically... they're trying to find the cheapest way to not lose money instead of being decent human beings to their own citizens. It always sucks.
Every developed country has a national identification system. SSNs were never intended as one, just as a way to get social security. But it’s become a de facto one because we don’t have a national identification system. So any fears about such are unfounded and silly.

I thought this was a more common practice, having run into gold plated. "living, 100+ year old" monks in several temples, without intentionally seeking them out. I've seen one in Taiwan: 慈航法師 and one in Malaysia (can't remember where). Google also shows one in Koh Samui, Thailand.
Notably, that timeline shown on screen ended in 1903. I assumed there was a revitalization of the practice since then, at least based on how many different temples I have heard about with self-mummified monks on display. I could be wrong though.
The gold plated monks are something different but similar.

Here in Brazil elderly people after their 65'shave to go yearly to the banks they have accounts to prove they are still alive and also to be able to recieve their retirement pensions
Even so, there are people who can fraud it - the sistem is not perfect
I had to bring my 90+ old grandmother each year to her bank so they took even her signature (or in case she coul'nt sign, her fingerprints), and for her Navy pension, a Navy officer would visit her at home, take fingerprints and a photo
There are no known pictures of Sogen Kato that has ever been released to the public. The illustration at 1:50 is actually from a picture of Tomoji Tanabe, who was the world's oldest living man from 2007 until his death in 2009 at the age of 113.
I see this picture very often misattributed as supposedly being Sogen Kato when it acutally isn't.
Good fact
2:16 “a-ano... honestly, my grandfather’s already dead.”
😭
That “you go girl” was perfect!
An interesting note about the “”my number” system: it’s been difficult to get people, especially the elderly, to sign up for a my number because many of the incentives to use it appeal to younger generations (think ease of use for printing documents at the convenience store, or identifying yourself in online government forms, etc). Anyway, they’ve been offering cash incentives for sign up recently, and suddenly the processing systems are completely overwhelmed and backed up lol.
Cash incentives make sense. Pay a little more up front to prevent decades of pension abuse.
I’m kinda surprised you didn’t mention Zelda Breath of the Wild, this being a pretty big pop culture reference to this self mummification process.
I'm sure those monks eating nuts in the forest for years had severe "Breath of the Wild"
Y'know, thinking about this with supposed 'aging population' increase, I think this might be a significant factor to the population of Japan supposedly having less young people. As in it might be an overblown fact due to various factors, and not exactly exceptional compared to other countries with good standards of living. Also due to the longevity of ages.
I've lived in multiple cities in Japan and considering there's children running around all over the place and huge schools everywhere you look, who knows, maybe.
@@ASHERUISE But that is because there is a lot of people there. Tokyo populations is of lets say tokyo population is of 10 milion people, if only 5 million have children.
It will look like is a lot of children, however when yyou check the total number of people you will se it is a little. Also most people have only one or two, so the next generation there will be fewer and fewer people.
Because this 5 million inclue both parents so it, so the number children will be less than 5 million because like I said most people have one, not always have two and is rare for people have more than two.
The next genaration maybe have more people who may not want a child, so in the end there will be even less and less children each generation.
@@ASHERUISE That is what we call anecdotal evidence and is a logical fallacy and should not be in any discussion. Statistics and numbers matters and they indicate a aging population.
@@nmstranger 's not anecdotal, it's simple observation. Even if I travel everywhere I go like 1/4-1/3 of the people are kids in school uniforms or mini-humans obviously in elementary or younger. There's old people as well, but as an American, I've never thought "OMG there are so many old people here compared to where I come from" but I have observed "OMG there are half a dozen schools on my 3.5 kilometer commute to work even though I live in a normal town and not a big city"
@@ASHERUISE that is literally the definition of an anecdote
I've been hearing a lot about the self mummified monks lately. I'm not sure what the sudden interest again has been lately but I know I didn't hear this story.

What I’m curious about though that wasn’t addressed was that the motives were painted in broad strokes as “greed” but I’m curious that with people living so long are they in need of the money that is coming to the aged people that they are not able to access themselves? It seems like they addressed the Identity issue which is a symptom but did they really get to the root cause of why people may be going that route of not admitting someone has passed? I’m sure for some it is just “easy money” but with these family situations I wonder if for some losing the money coming from the deceased would make them destitute so it’s more desperation than greed?
Working in the field I do...I know of quite a few cases of families not wanting to/not sending in their dearly departeds documents to the government, for exactly that reason.
Especially in the elderly population, where they rely on the government for a monthly pension.
Losing that one income can literally mean they lose the roof over the head and food on their plate, OR choosing to let their health decline by not paying for their needed medications, heat and hydro.
It's very sad when they have to opt to do something deemed "illegal", just to survive and be able to have a basic need and necessity.
I would call it greedy if they used the extra money to buy a second yacht 🛥️
They lived with a body for extra money 💴 they must have felt somewhat desperate.
It makes sense because if you notice, in that household everyone was elderly or pushing it, even the grand daughter was like 60 (i believe) it didn't sound like they had younger people around.
2:03. this is the first time I've ever heard anyone unironically say that number, and I love it. I almost didn't notice
2:42 As soon as I noticed one of the answers to the community poll was meditation-related, I IMMEDIATELY referred to my Megami Tensei knowledge and guessed it was related to the practice of Sokushinbutsu thanks to the existence of Fiend demon Daisoujou!

The “you go girl “ is hilarious when you think about the fact this woman is probably double if not triple times Brew’s age

For the population decline, I once thought of a rather novel idea; Japan could implement a repatriation system for their diaspora abroad, that allows people verified to be of Japanese descent to emigrate back easily and with little cost (family members included). I do know that they're rather cagey about foreigner immigrants, so allowing their people to return to their ancestral homes may get better reception.
Though the world in general probably needs to look at downsizing the economy for a smaller number of people and a more sustainable future, repatriation is just one way help fill the demographic gaps during the transition.
It’s not a radical idea: many countries have had similar schemes over the years.
So many foreigners go over there anyways, they might as well be part of the population. Maybe eventually all japanese will have ancestry from America lol

This case is little bit similliar with what happened in Indonesia last year. That 4 died bodies were founded in a house, and lately identified they'd died at different time, with no crime identified. Several months before it, the daughter said to guess that her mother was still alive n she still cared n fed her.but then the guess was shocked by bad smell n weird appearances that prove her mother was died. 4 months later, the daughter n all family members bodies was founded by their neighbour n police.
