Despite being confined to an iron lung due to polio contracted in childhood, Paul Alexander successfully taught himself to breathe independently for a portion of each day. He went on to earn a law degree, write a book about his life, gather a substantial following on social media, and inspire people around the world with his positive mindset.

RIP paul
nah, I’d win.
Ok
Elvis took a polio vaccine on tv to convince the masses to also take it. 3000 kids died and the whole country of adults takes the retro pflz3r jab.
A video about him popped up on my home page 6 days ago (March 14, 2024) and I was interested in his story, so I searched him up and realized that he died 3 days (March 11, 2024) before I searched him up and I was honestly really sad about him even though I knew nothing about him. He said he lived a fulfilling life and I'm happy for him about that, but his whole life was robbed away from him just because he had polio and needed the iron long, but that does not mean that he is anything different from us. He is still human like us. RIP
if you want to know more about his story he wrote a book himself. so you can read it.
You did it Paul! You lived more than a lot of people without the iron lung.
Both in length of time and in number of accomplishments!
He was an incredible soul
The need for iron lung*
@@HeDoMo3r he meant paul lived longer with an iron lung than normal people
Paul died this year😢😢
I remember watching the documentaries on him. Paul was a man who went through hardship and said in his own ways I am strong even if I can't. Thanks for teaching us man and hope that everything you taught us doesn't go to waste. Rest in peace. Paul

RIP, Paul. You played the hand dealt you better than most people do with winning hands.
My grandma had contracted polio but luckily she did not have to live in an iron lung. She was however paralyzed cross way on her body so she walked with a limp.
Two years ago I ended up in a medically induced coma due to an autoimmune issue. Woke up immobile and on a ventilator. There were a couple instances where the ventilator tube popped off the trach tube and I crashed. It was *exactly* more terrifying than you think it is.
Glad you made it!!
This just makes me think you heard a bunching of doctors and nurses swearing as the quickly run back over to put it back on
good thing you made it too!!
@@hunterbear2421 That sounds a lot more comedic than it should be 😭
@@YuBeace Yeah, but he made it no matter how comedic it was
Paul is a reminder that we take ourselves and what we have for granted. 99% of us have complete control of our body functions yet everyday, we try abusing it and slowly destroy it.
I cant imagine being trapped in this contraption for a day, let alone decades.
RIP to Paul, you are a legend
What kind of inexcusable monster do you have to be to steal money from an iron lung patient?
My goodness, this man has done so much in his life despite how fate dealt him a bad hand. Many of us should and can benefit his example of dealing with struggles in our own lives. Kudos to Paul, he truly was a fighter even when people said no, many had doubts of him, and life itself tried to stop him, he just kept moving forward. I am sure his friends and family thought of him as an incredible fighter and man. R.I.P. Paul Alexander, you lead the best life you could and had so much skill and knowledge.
wow polio is very devastating and sad... 😰😭

This man is a perfect example of when life gives you lemons you make lemonade, he didn't let that get him down and he succeeded and became a lawyer, god bless you Mr Alexander and rest in peace 🙏 many could learn a thing or two about getting through hardship
That was an awful and jarring segway to your sponsor.
It was creative but maybe just a little poorly placed for the tone that was previously set. However its understandable that its probably hard to place a sponsor in a good place with such a topic.
@@Mojobojo probably at the very beginning, or the very end.
Yeah, it's done in a pretty bad taste.
what's wrong?
What specific words were used that made this so "jarring" for you?
I can’t believe Paul has passed. What an incredible man.
This is the first I’ve ever heard of Paul… As you began the story, I thought, “How horrible! That poor guy had to live his whole life in what’s essentially a giant iron casket!” That’s always been my impression of iron lungs, they’re just horrifying. But the further you got into his story, the more I realized he had an amazing life and he was such an incredible example for us all about strength and perseverance. RIP, Paul. You’re finally free ❤
Paul lived more than some of you not in an iron lung. RIP ❤️🕯️
13:46 Those words are beautiful.
Rest in Peace Legend, your willpower and positivity in the face of challenges most of us wouldn't resist for a day will always be remembered ❤
His life makes me realize I have no excuses
Paul's physical body may have died, but he lives on within everyone he has inspired to live their own lives.
This man is a true inspiration. I was so happy to see that the go fund me raised all that money for him, he was truly deserving of the help.
My aunt had it as a child, but luckily (in a way) it only left her partially paralyzed from the waist down. She could still stand and walk with leg braces and a cane, but for the most part, she was in a wheelchair. Sadly, she passed away a couple years ago... Rip aunt Cathy.
May she rest in peace🙏
we did not need to cry first thing in the morning -- but here we are..
Breathe deeply, Mr. Alexander
Paul was one of the greatest human beings that ever lived. He had a hard life, but he will never be forgotten.
My aunt had polio. Thankfully, she is mobile and still with us, shes had cancer later in life, and she still limps and has issues. But wow, weren't we lucky to keep her!
Every time i see paul's story i tear this man is a hero showing us that nothing is impossible! God rest his soul we will always remember him and now he will spread inspiration even more than ever!
I can't believe that with all our medical advancements we never came up with something better then an iron lung for these people.
We did, called a ventilator.
We have better stuff but it doesn't work on these people specifically due to the side effects of the iron lung. (lung atrophy)
@@MikesRigs As they said in the video, ventilators require intubation, which means you pretty much can't speak, eat, drink, etc. They're amazing life-saving devices, but they're intended for short-term use. In their own way they're probably more restrictive than an iron lung if you're going to need them for decades.
I think the most obvious solution would be to replace the diaphragm with an implant of some sort. But because of the way the diaphragm works it would probably be prone to wear and tear. It would also need to be controlled somehow externally. I think it would be like being on oxygen but worse. A tube in the chest cavity instead of in the nose. I think it could be done but it would be risky and it would not be pretty.
IIRC there are some more modern versions that only have a compartment around the torso and seals at the neck and waist. Still needs a power supply, though.
Paul was such a nice and intelligent man. He made it far despite everything. I’m happy to have known about him.
I'm a completely healthy guy, and this man manages to get multiple awards even though he is disabled and stuck with Polio, I have my utmost respect for Paul.
When they said he passed the BAR and was later a practicing lawyer, my mouth dropped..
Of course, if the only thing I could do to pass the time was read or write, I'd be doing a lot more of it. I'm sure he was much smarter than me.
It's crazy the virus still exists. At my university we had a polio outbreak a couple years ago, thankfully it was only limited to international students from certain countries being susceptible, but it shows how important it is to make vaccines available and mandatory for everyone
Cringe.
That story in the sponsorship segment deserves a Brew video of its own
Oh... Rest in peace, Paul.
We glad we've met you from the internet, or elsewhere. Thank you Paul, for your words and everything else you have shown to us.
When in doubt, a mechanic is always the best person to rely on.
I've been kinda down this last week. Seeing this and hearing about what he accomplished despite being bound to the Iron Lung makes me realize I don't have it that bad. And even if I did, that's no reason to despair. True inspiration I honstly needed. Thank you and R.I.P.
3:05 thats accually a good thing that it rarely attacks adults becouse if it attacks adults too then the children wouldnt have anyone too take care of them...
RIP Paul. I hope more people learn about you and your story. Thank you. You've inspired me.
I would rather be dead than be saddled with that prison for the entirety of my life.
Same here
Paulball had a spirit stronger than the iron that contained him. RIP
@@user-rx7pd1xv4k No kidding.
I just cant understand why anyone would still be using an iron lung when modern respirators and intubation methods perform the same function and allow forced pressurization of the lungs are more compact and can be powered more eaisly by batteries
It's not true that all positive pressure ventilation requires a tube down the throat. Bipap and Vpap both just use a mask that fits over your nose. I forget what its called but there's also another device with a mouthpiece you can close your lips around. Lots of Muscular Dystrophy patients use them.

People treated polio more seriously than Corona.
Corona struck nursing homes. Polio struck nurseries.
That's because polio was more serious than COVID
@sunnyd9763 True but far too many people died needless deaths. Covid didn't have to be as lethal as it was.
Of course it was treated more seriously, Polio was way deadlier and had more serious lifelong consequences than Corona.
It was because Polio was way more deadly and brutal. It is sad that people think Covid was the worst. I think people who think that are either too spoiled or ignorant.

Antivaxxers want to return to this
My grandma was born in the late '40s. She says that every year after summer break, there would be a few kids who didn't return because of Polio. Then the vaccine came out and her entire class got bussed to the nearest city to get the vaccine on sugar cubes, and her classmates stopped disappearing.

RIP Paul Alexander
Oh no... :(
I wonder if you could like pass in a mouse and keyboard or game controller. How much space even is there inside an iron lung? Is the vacuum pressure low enough to make batteries dangerous?
He lived far too long in that device. At least he is now no longer suffering. Because what he went through is a fate worse then death.
1:20 that was only 3 notes 😂 were is the rest of the song
The true trooper. I salute thee, Paul Alexander.
''I cant say im glad that i caught polio but im glad that i developed these skills, the knowledge, the abilities that polio demanded of me.
And i feel like i accomplished more than if i had lived without'' - Paul Alexander (1946-2024)
WHAT A CHAD! REST IN POWER KING! 👑👒
I would've thought someone would come along and design a more sophisticated tool for Paul to use at some point. Surely, there was something better than a stick with a pen taped on.
I'm heartbroken he has passed away 💔 he was a true inspiration.
I'm sorry if this is gross but, I'm genuinely curious. How do you clean yourself and use the bathroom while in it? I understand there's portholes but I can't imagine those being super helpful.
Bed pans that a caretaker routinely empties and cleans. Or adult diapers. Both require caretakers to clean them up.
And for showers likely sponge baths or shower wipes like hospitals use.
