A heroic defence of the Chew House. Unfortunately for the Americans, they devoted too much of their attack to this isolated garrison. However, although ultimately unsuccessful at Germantown, the Revolutionary cause won much Kudos in France and abroad for taking the fight to the Brits after their defeat at Brandywine. Also, recent research on 'Wayne's Affair' - the so-called 'Paoli Massacre' - reveals that the Americans were not in their beds but had been alerted and formed up, ready to pull out when the attack came in. The British troops had been ordered to either take the flints from their muskets or simply leave them unloaded so as not to give away their positions. It takes a lot of guts to take on someone with a loaded musket when all you have is a bayonet so the Brits must have been really wound up to charge forward at Paoli - something that would be hard to wind down quickly once they got face to face with the Americans. The darkness of the night actually favoured the Brits in this situation because when the Americans fired, the flash of their muskets gave away their positions so the Brits knew where they were to charge them. Not so with the Americans. With no firing from the Brits, they could not see them until they were right in their faces with the bayonet.
