  • 243 years ago on September 11th, 1777, General George Washington and his Continental Army began their defense of Philadelphia at the Battle of Brandywine. Although resulting in a British victory, the Americans were able to hold together long enough - allowing the Continental Congress to escape the city and relocate.

    In today's Rev War In4 Rebrand, we take a look at the Battle of Brandywine, which was fought 243 years ago today. Brandywine marks the first major engagement in the Continental Army's defense of Philadelphia under George Washington, as British General William Howe moved his army towards the city. The Battle of Brandywine saw more troops in action than any other battle during the American Revolution. Thanks for your interest in American History and for supporting battlefield preservation!

    I believe one of my ancestors died as a result of this battle. He died at Chester County, PA in early Oct. 1777. I have yet to find out why but probably as a battle wound or some type of battle related accident. He was a lowly Irish Immigrant American patriot of a rank of Private, from MA in the Continental Army.

      My ancestor was a lowly Irish private at Brandywine, and was proud to fight for the British, against the Yankee traitors, and later settled in Canada, the real home of the free.

    My great great grandfather was Benjamin Ring and it was his house where Washington planned the battle in Chadds Ford and also have family records that differ from some of the historical accounts of the battle,in the book it was Benjamin Ring who showed Washington a way of escape as they were being outflanked.

    I live near the battlefield and it's definitely worth taking a look. All the houses are still there from the battle and everything's preserved well. You can even see the spot where Lafayette was wounded. Keep in mind the Paoli Massacre follow the battle a few miles away and really energized the continentals who were rightfully angry.

    I grew up in in the Media, Pennsylvania area, 13 miles to the east, and so this battle was local history. If I remember correctly, Washington and his generals were unaware of the very large British force coming around from the North, being preoccupied by a face-off with Baron von Knyphausen to the West, across Brandywine Creek. The battlefield is ~ 10 square miles and of course most of it is in private hands. On several occasions I have donated so that the Trust could purchase small parcels of land at Brandywine for posterity. Thank you for this video.

    This was a nice informative video. Would be nice if you also included a couple slides with maps showing troop movement and encounter locations along side the reenactment slides. As a west coaster I'm less familiar with the geography than others might be, and it would help with visualization.

    What the Hey, Man? Read the sign on marker 3:02. It totally contradicts what Historian is saying. So...who's right? The sign or the Historian?

    • @koz8319
      @koz8319 2 года назад +1

      They are both right. The numbers on the sign are the total number of combatants. The 3000 Colonial and 8000 British forces are the ones that began the engagent at 2pm on September 11, 1777. More forces entered the battle which covered a span of roughly 10 miles I believe.
