Using a Digital Multimeter to Check E-bike Battery Voltage (Applies to Lectric & Rad Mini 4)

In this video I used a multimeter to check voltage on the battery because these power meter on the displays is not a good way to gauge how much battery is actually left. This is also a good way to check if your charger is fully charging your battery. Thanks for watching everyone:)

I wanted to say thank you for this clear and visual video. I followed your instructions and checked my battery....it's ALIVE!!!! I have not ridden my bike for over a year due to many circumstances. I charged it still thinking it was totally dead. Meter said 54.6...the trick...turning the key on. I'm also impressed it (the Rad battery) that we bought in early 2020 and haven't ridden in over a year have great charge. Thank you again. It's people like you who know what they are talking about, share their information no matter how small a task. That small task for you can be a huge unknown task for the laymen like us.
I am glad it helped you out! The batteries can last a long time if stored correctly and kept charged to around 70%. Being able to test the voltage really helps with this. Again, thank you for the kind words :)

Should my e-bike battery give a reading if the key is off? Mine is reading at 25 volts with no key in. But my other battery only reads at 0.7 with the key off. Trying to determine if I have a faulty battery since it keeps cutting out power to my bike every couple miles. I have to turn the key off then back on to turn the display back on.
Hmm, sounds like there is some internal problem inside the battery. I have never had a voltage reading show on mine when the key is turned off.

I think it depends on the manufacture of the battery. My xp2 standard battery, gives me a 0.4 without the key but reads normal with the key on. My xp3 step-thru battery reads the voltage slightly lower than when it is on (44 vs 47).
You inserted the red + first then black - last. If you insert black then red will it produce a spark?
I've always done red then black. I do not know if it would spark as i've never tried it like that.
Spark occures when you disconnect the charger black lead to the frame. No other time on a dead battery. There is no charging off gas with lithium to light up
Just checked with my new battery and voltmeter.. black 1st then red no spark. New ebike build wires everywhere time to learn..lest there are videos now ya.
If you hold up and down the screen will change do it again twice it’ll show voltage
Rad doesn't give advanced menu options on my Rad Mini 4. Also, doing what you mentioned only brings up tire size for speed rating. I did not see any voltage reading on the display.

How did you determine at 47 volts, battery voltage is down over 50%? From 54.6 full charge voltage?
It is based on the average voltage when the bike will shut down. Mine for example shuts down around 43 volts.
@@Pandafoo Do all 48 volt batteries top out at 54.6 volts? I just looked at my display and 48 volt power levels. the top level is only 50 volts? Does that mean it's a lame battery? The maker Polarna makes no claim as to who battery maker is. So I'm guessing it a Chinese battery maker. Btw, thanks for taking the time to answer questions.
@@SonriseSunset Well not sure with your brand, but with my Lectric and Rad Mini 4 batteries they both top out at 54.6 volts. I would think that a 48 volt battery from another brand should do the same, but I could be mistaken. Sorry I couldn't be more precise regarding your brand.
@@SonriseSunset my M2S 750 is showing 55 volts with a 48V battery pack if this helps at all.
How can you be down 50% at 47.0 volts with only 7.6 volts down from 100% charge at 54.6 volts.
Okay, let me explain. I base the % on when the bike basically turns off. For me this is around battery voltage 43-44. Also, keep in mind the voltage drain is quicker the lower your battery gets while riding. A battery is considered getting a full charge when this happens, but riding until your bike turns off is NOT good for the longevity of your battery. I always try and never let me battery go lower than 46 volts for this reason. Hope this helps you understand what I meant :)

Hi hello thank u for the video , what if ur meter keeps going my battery is just like urs and it fully charged my meter didn’t stop it went all the way pass 100 can u tell me what that means,, thank u
did you have your meter set for DC current? Also, makes sure it is set to handle the DC voltage for the battery. My meter has a switch to allow for up to 200 DC volts.

Checking battery voltage using a multimeter.
If smoke comes out f the meter, you set it to he wrong voltage. I use a bead machine, Aldi sells mixes.

Mines reading all over the place. I can’t get a steady read. Also, when it’s on the bike it works off and on, mostly off. Probably time for a new battery huh?
It ranges anywhere from 0 to 54
I got it to stay at 32 one time and 53 the other. It’s a 48 volt battery. Let me know if you think battery replacement time! I don’t think the voltage should jump around like that. My e-bike shows E-6 error code
I have been getting the same error code on my bike when I turn it on. However, it is NOT often when I get it and it seems to correct itself and go away. My Bike is now 3 years old. I would make sure the contacts are clean. Use rubbing alcohol on them. Re-check with meter and make sure you place the black (negative) first, then place the red lead. Maybe that will help give a more accurate reading. Also, any issues with your charging unit? Please be really careful if you notice anything out of the normal while charging as some of these batteries/chargers could overheat and pose a fire risk.
@@Pandafoo thanks for replying, I’m gonna try that in a couple hours. The bike was bought brand new in January. Charger should be fine, The battery is probably bad after riding it in the rain. It started to act up a day after riding it in the rain.
@@Pandafoo still nothing. I just want to make sure it’s definitely the battery before I buy a new one cause those are expensive lol. I think I’ll probably just have to take the risk.

some batteries just like to cause problems for whatever reason. Mine occasionally gives an error on the display after it has been fully charged, but then it goes away and bike works just fine.
My battery is 48v 14Ah 672 Wh
Same as my Rad Mini 4. My Lectric has a 10 ah battery 48 v
The battery isnt going to run out linearly. It might run down quick on the first half and much slower on the bottom. This is also going to change through the life of the battery. A load test will determine the overall health of your battery.
My battery drains the slowest on the first half - 54v to about 50, then it starts to speed up how fast it drains below 50v
@@Pandafoosounds about right. That's how I meant to say it...I just wrote it backwards. Best to charge it after every ride too. Unlike alkaline batteries lithium ion cells like to be topped up...and try not to ever run them out flat.
The key does not turn on the battery. the key is only to lock the battery in place. the battery has a on off switch on it.
On both my batteries, the Lectric & Rad Mini ones, the key does turn off the power on the battery. I had to turn the key to the on position to get voltage from the battery showing up on the multimeter.
Voltage tell’s nothing, it’s all about Amperage (capacity)
Voltage measures pressure about electrons to flow
Amperage measures the capacity of electrons…the more the more powerful.
So A bad battery can measure good voltage but this show untaxed.
Thank you, I thought that the voltage should remain constant to drive the motor and yes the amps are like the gas tank. Not sure if you will read this but my question to you is I was thinking of buying a used ebike and doing a voltage test on the battery if the battery is rated at 52 volts and the reading is lets say 48 would that be an indication that the life of the battery might be less or if factory fresh you should get 25 mile range but may only get 20miles? @@jimthompson7035 hi Jim, first thing to keep in mind when in buying mode…first check the age of the bike on receipt. Second step, check the bike computer, to tell you how many miles/km’s is driven. Measure if date and miles is related to fair daily use.
Third…depending on age, ask if the battery been replaced.
Important: Make an appointment with seller and ask him/her to fully charge the battery when coming the other day. So you can see on the battery indicator, the battery is fully charged. Because weak batteries can’t get fully charged indicated. Or maybe yes but when ask for a test drive…use full capacity of the motor. When the level indicator quickly runs back…there is a bad battery..
@@Retro.Studio Thank you so much. I did not realize that a bad battery would not charge to 100%. The bike is 4 years old and has 600 miles . And as the cost of a battery is the highest factor this is good to know. If I may ask one more question, the bike is a Kepler Rider that uses the 52 volt battery, the bike has a second battery he says he used a y splitter that runs in parallel , should you use a balancer to reduce the risk of damage to the batteries or the motor? @@jimthompson7035 that bike is a stunner. Absolutely use always a balancer/discharger to kept both batteries in top condition. use of a splitter depends on how long your axi radius track gonna be. Cheaper? Yes! But yes a balancer is a much durable option.

They still test the same exact way! Red wire to +, black wire to -
