All of the above. Though I would probably be the one living in the cottage in someone else's backyard if any of my family members decided to build one.
We are currently building a backyard tiny house/cottage in my in laws backyard for our family of 4! We are going through the daunting process but in the end it will be all worth it! Also we are building it all by ourselves
I would live in mine!! And it would make life easier in taking care of my aging grandmother, so she can stay in her own home and not have to stay at a nursing home. I crave to build...
In the Dutch Antilles you find this to be a way of life. Many families were given land by the Netherlands many generations ago. Once their kids come back from college, they build One bedroom houses behind their parent's house. It's quiet often you see where there are two family homes on one property simply because you can build whenever and however. The land and the homes stay in the family for generations.
Mrs. Adriann Same as where I’m from in Newfoundland, Canada. Someone bought or inherited a bunch of land and many of their children just build towards the back, property cost = $0
$300,000 to build a backyard cottage?! SERIOUSLY? My income (with a master’s degree)has not kept up with that kind of costs! That’s pretty pricey per square foot!!! That’s $834/ square foot for a 360 sq ft tiny house.
There are so many places in this country where the law says : One dwelling on any given piece of property. That's some old schoolie crap that needs to be abolished!!!!!!! All of us need to band together and oust old government powers and elect some free thinking folks and get this situation turned around for the benefit of everybody!!!!!!!!! So, get involved people in your area and lets make this happen!!!!
Just make a point to dig deep on all the regulations and such. Find out why they exist and what is the group/persons motivation for creating the legislation.
Just across the border in Vancouver, lane homes are EVERYWHERE to the point theres absolutely no street parking due to people tearing down their garages to build them. I would personally love to live in one of them but I know the "burden" they have on the city. Pros and cons to everything-- hopefully in seattle they'll be smart about it. Great video!
Mama Fishh They have to do that because the Chinese mega-rich have bought up all the property that would otherwise be available for those that live and work there. The wealthy buy them to live into for a few weeks a year and to basically launder their money. It’s an awful situation for people who work there. I believe the government is going to crack down by taxing these empty-home owners heavily.
I love this! Thank you!! It's my dream to build a small portable home aka "tiny house". Watching your videos has helped me explore different designs. I love yours it's absolutely perfect. I'm in Michigan looking for salvage wood...
I think this is wonderful and I totally support this idea, but it's just sad that we've had to resort to this as a way to survive high rent prices and ridiculously overpriced homes due to greed in society.
I’d give anything to have my own house, even just to rent one for the time being but the market is crazy. I currently live in a 1 bedroom apartment in a not very desired small town area and the rental market is crazy where I am for the area it is even for just a bachelor let alone a house. I’ve always wanted a tiny house or just a smaller house on a property with a fenced yard but I’m not gonna get that for years to come 😓
WoW! Over 500K for a backyard cottage?? It obviously depends on where you are of course, like he said you can get a decent house with acreage of that price in Florida. Beautiful though!
Both of my children and my younger brother are special needs people and I would love to be able to give each of them their own tiny cottage in the yard. They're all cronological adults and trying to balance respecting them as adults and dealing with their limitations is a difficult juggling act. They need and want their own space but trying to give them what they need that's safe on their limited disability incomes is impossible. I barely managed to get this house for us. Where in the hell are people finding the money to do this stuff? I'm technically not even making it from paycheck to paycheck.
thanks Jenna, great Guest too.. sorry maybe is time of the month but i hafta skip this one. guy's voice tooooo deep was grating. *Painful!!!!!* so sorry ! will watch the next.
How would you use a backyard cottage? For a family member, full-time living, as a rental, etc?
used to relax ... garden in the backyard!!!

I like this guy very much. He is calm and diplomatic I think. You need to be with municipalities. Very attractive housing.

Love this video, thank you! I live in Vancouver BC Canada and we are slowly allowing backyard cottages. Lots of regulations, too.
I appreciate that you’re professionally knowledgeable about this.

This is 100k more than my 'regular' 1700 sq ft house...
Yeah, what is the point if it's just as expensive as a regular house?
Thank you for posting informational videos on accessory dwelling units!
Thank you Jenna, as usual a really professional video, look forward to your videos, hope you have an amazing life

Connect the roofs, that's how some people get around that law.

I’d love an update give how drastically the market has changed the past 3 years.

Why do you use wrong English? Why not use " have to" ?
I really couldn’t understand some if what he was saying. His strong vocal fry turns most of what he said into mumbo-jumbo.
❤❤❤❤❤
he is crazy
Sorry for asking but is that a picture of Ted Bundy on your wall?
