- The hoodie. It's probably the most common leisurewear today, and can be found on the backs of CEOs and students alike. So of course the options are many, and some stretching well into the hundreds of dollars. So are these more expensive hoodies worth it? In this video I take three of my favorites and compare them so you can make an informed decision on which hoodie best suits you.

Reviews of clothing, boots, and accessories for men, along with style advice and life philosophy. I've been working with my hands for my entire life as a mechanic, tow truck driver, and eventually a licensed electrician. Being a blue collar guy, I look for certain elements in a product: is it durable? Is it high-quality? Will it perform well over its service life? Whether boots, pants, jackets, or tools I believe it's best to buy once and cry once by getting the best you can afford. With so many options these days, choosing the best product can become a difficult decision, but that's where I come in. Helping you stay stylish, rugged, and handsome.
I don't care where it's made as long as it's made well, and allows you to buy less and buy better. Хобби
One disadvantage to buying quality clothing is that my stuff isn't wearing out fast enough to justify purchasing new gear. I have two hoodies that were gifts that still have the tags on them.
lmaoooo exactly
Your extremely well-written and thought out response has had the exact opposite effect you've intended. Congratulations on making my job much easier.
It's not a disadvantage it is how clothing should be. It's wasteful and damaging to the environment to be chewing through clothes like they are disposable.
I long to have this issue only most phenomenal quality clothes are only available online. I’ve been trying to look for a wardrobe that I don’t have to keep buying. Any suggestions
I know exactly what you mean by the American Giant making other hoodies feel cheap! The way you described it feeling structured and dense was absolutely on point.
*currently wearing a hoodie and shorts*
**Sweats profusely**
Lol!
Welcome to Iowa. Currently rocking a hoodie shorts and flip flops
I'll wear that combo on workdays. Only spend half hour outside, but 10 hours inside a hot factory.
I love the Arborwear Double Thick zip. That one is so thick and warm it’s great for anything outdoors
I've been thinking about a hoodie for a while now. Perfect timing with this video!
Hey Carl, this is with out a doubt the best review on these hoodies . I've seen about 4 or 5 reviews and you did a great job on the explanation and the close ups and letting the public know which one works better depending on where you live. Great video. Exactly what I was looking for and couldn't find until now. Awesome Job!!!!!
I appreciate that, thank you!!
Honestly thanks for this video. I've mentioned American Giant multiple times in previous video comments, it's good to see you actually take them into consideration.
Absolutely! It may take some time but I do take the recommendations seriously
My experience with American Giant was absolutely horrible. They have the worst customer service of any company I have ever dealt with.
Thanks for the review, Carl!
1620,Camber and Origin are hands down the 3 best hoodies I’ve ever owned.1620 is my personal favorite of the 3.
Great content Carl! Definitely looking for something warm for the cold Iowa winters.
For sure! Layer up that F&T hoodie and you'll be good!
I bought a Carhartt paxton rain defender last year and its my daily driver when it gets cold out.
The Flint & Tinder 10 year hoodie has become my go to hoodie. Even bought a second color.
Excellent choice!
Just ordered my first American Giant today.
I have 2 of the Taylor Stitch hoodies that I've found lightly used on ebay for less than 50% msrp. They're by far some of my favorite casual pieces of clothing for a chilly fall/spring day or summer night. Obviously they're not enough for winter, sadly. But I switch to wool sweaters by then anyway.
Amorphous blob is a total mood for fall.
Thats my spirit animal
Nice video brother! I was looking for a 3sixteen hoodie video and stumbled on your channel, keep up the good content
I just ordered my second American Giant hoodie. I would rate this as essential. It’s a work horse. It’s probably the only clothes item I’d pay this amount of money to purchase. Thanks for posting all the content you do.
I love their stuff but I had just had a horrible customer service experience with them. I won't be buying from them again.
You’re killing it with the recommendations! I purchased the Oris Aquis Date Green Dial (39.5) after your review... I love it! I have the American Giant Hoodie in black and it’s awesome! Keep up the good work! 🙏
I love my American Giant but they have terrible customer service.
I have the filson mackinaw anorak in navy. It’s awesome. I also have the filson foul weather hoodie on order. The anorak is a pullover made of 24oz mackinaw wool with double lined hood, a high zip neck and a and is very warm. The Foul weather hoodie is 24oz mackinaw wool with full zip hoodie with a layer of tin cloth on the hood, shoulders and arms.
I live in Southern California, and although it does get down to the high 30s down here, I don’t find need for a sweater once I start working. But, for casual days the Bayside Apparel is a 9.5 oz hoodie 80% cotton and 20% polyester Made in USA hoodie that does the trick for me.
"Just Sweatshirts" 18oz. also a good option. Then of corse the Arborwear dbl (26oz) is the King Tiger Tank of hoodies.
New sub here. Carl your channel is a diamond in the rough. Love the production quality, how much you put into the research, and your unbiased reviews on Workwear. Sheesh man I'm so happy this popped on my recommended. Cheers!
Thank you so much my friend, and welcome!!!
@@CarlMurawski of course man! Dude the video on the Detroit jacket was so stellar too. Would love to see a video on the best denim for big guys! Keep Killin it man
I have a Taylor Stitch Hoodie. My go to. After working out, a day at the beach, around the campfire
No doubt! Thats where they shine
I have the exact American Giant hoodie you displayed. I like it, but LL Bean Katahdin fleece-lined hoodie is my favorite for warmth, durability and comfort. That said, this year’s version slapped on an annoying logo (an irritating new trend with LL Bean-even on men’s bathrobes 😖).
I have had a bunch of hoodies and my favorite is reigning champ. It's just soft and easy to wear. American giant is much more stiff and ridged.
Love my Reigning Champ. I’ve got a heavy duty version that is double lined in the hood and solid but fits quite trim. Good for an athletic or slim build but won’t work for everyone.
Just subscribed to this channel. I worked for Disney On Ice as a traveling Ice Technician before covid struck. Ive been using your channel for reference on work clothing for awhile as I too liked feeling professionally dressed at work. Can always depend on an honest and knowledgeable opinion from you. Ive been wanting to treat myself to a nice piece so im saving some money on the side for that Mackinaw Wool jacket from Filson because I peeped it on your review. Respect how you pointed out how overpriced some pieces have become from their collection over the years.
Thank you so much! I’m doing a video next Friday all about the mackinaw cruiser. I hope you like it!
Can’t get enough of this guy!
You rock
I love my Flint & Tinder 10 year hoodie up here in the great white north.
This video was great! Living in PA/NJ I'm always looking for a good hoodie around this time. I'll be looking into American Giant. Like the fact it's zipper, a nice big flat looking hood and american made. Nothing I hate more in a hoodie than when you get those that give you that weird cone head shape when you pull them up.
I was about to say 1620 workwear is great made in USA hoodies that I think out rival carhartt and having buttons on the neck instead of drawstrings is amazing and way safer and cleaner looking
TAD does a pretty killer Merino wool hoodie that I've gotten a lot of wear out of! Great for that dressier hoodie look.
I’m late to the party but love hoodie videos!!!!
I got a Carhartt rain defender hoodie for free (the best price) and honestly it opened my eyes to why people pay $60+ for a hoodie. It's construction is on another level compared to what I had before
Personally, first pick is the carhaart rain defender hoodie, second is the woobie hoodie from grunt style, third will be anything from under armor
Arbor wear double thick, best work hoodie ever.
mike smiley very nice but really heavy and almost too warm. And the hood is way too big unless ur pulling it over a hard hat.
Sadly, I remember shopping at cheap department stores like Kmart and Ames, both closed now, and being able to buy a quality hoodie similar to the American Giant about 25-30 years ago. I remember a brand called Big Yank that made a have high quality hoodie for less than $20. Today, everything is made so cheap now, if one insists on quality you must pay this kind of money.
Hi Carl, what’s your view on the champion reverse weave hoodie compared to these? Champion has gone more ‘urban’ as a style recently which isn’t as classic as the previous athletics style but this one really is heritage being a high quality hoodie since somewhere around the 1940s
If you want to check out a bomber pullover hoody, look at the Duckworth Powder Hoody. Montana Grown Merino Wool and 100% Made in the USA. It comes in at $150.00 but they often have 40% off sales........they also make the nicest classic wool button up shirt I have found called the Hi Line, available in Black only coming in at $300.00.
"Just Say No" to pumpkin beer !🍺🍺😀 Have had my American Giant Classic for 3 years now. Great choice if your waist measurement is larger than your chest !
Hahahaha Tis the season for pumpkin EVERYTHING!!!!
Wish I would’ve read this yesterday before buying the Sam Adams Jack O. 🤮
@@ljohnston5457 LOL, Some of those pumpkin beers I'm not sure if you should drink it or chew it 🤢😬
You gotta try the Origin Heavy Hoodie!
Glad to see 1620 on the list even if mostly in the description. Got 2 of the hoodies and they're fantastic. I'd love to see more reviews of their products.
I've got two 1620 hoodies, the zip up, and the pull-over. Love them both.
5 1620 pull over hoodies here….one is the wife’s lol. Only way to not get your all stolen
Yea i preferred zip up hoodie but will prefer the no zip up when we are deep into the fall.
Agreed, I kinda like the kangaroo pocket on a pullover
Shorts with jacket are standard is some parts of the world like San Diego and Germany for instance.
I've been meaning to check out the American Giant hoodie. I love my Flint and Tinder jacket so much.
I think you'll really be impressed with the American Giant. SUPER nice stuff.
@@CarlMurawski Also, surprisingly Carl. The Flint and Tinder hoodie isn't too bad for Hawaii weather, still wearable during the slightly warmer nights but not recommended during a hot summer day lol.
Please don't fall for American Giant they are a complete scam and they have the worst customer service of any business I have ever dealt with.
I gave up hoodies for a couple mackinaw wool vests.
You should check out Arborwear hoodies. They make work wear for Arborists and their products are awesome. The hoodies they make have extra large hoods to fit over a hard hat. Single thick or double thick (the double is crazy warm) Tech fleece or cotton, full zip, 1/4 zip, pull over ect. Awesome products
Thoughts on Los Angeles Apparel hoodie?
I love this. I've had my American Giant pullover for years and shows very little wear. That said my oldest and still most comfortable hoodie is the Nike Loopwheeler, slub fit, but so nice. The 1620 USA work hoodie is in my radar this year.
Its a shame American Giant has turned into a scam. Terrible customer service and will absolutely not help you with any order issues.
@@bryanhain969 That's a shame when brands ride their reputation unaware how quickly reputation can tarnish.
@@TwitchRamble Update: After weeks of emails and calling they finally allowed a return of a brand new item. It was elevated to another customer service rep and I am very happy they eventually helped us out.
Man I wish I could love hoodies but I can’t. I’m more of a pullover sweatshirt kind of guy, I just personally prefer to wear hats instead of hoodies. Also the shorts and sweater guy comes out at around 30 degree weather here in NYC 😂
They're everywhere! I just don't get it...
I like the _idea_ of a hoodie, but I never actually use the hood part of it. lol
I'm a shorts & hoodie guy and thats kinda the warm-ish / my legs don't get super cold Cali style
Carl have you tried any iron heart hoodies?
Lmao, totally agree with you about guys with shorts and jackets 😂😂😂
Don't diss shorts and hoodie szn Carl! It's the perfect outfit for the 50s if you have hairy legs
As a guy with a ton of hoodies, I am ready for this video 👍🏻
I hope it didnt disappoint!
Carl Murawski only disappointment I experienced was when I bought a ten year hoodie and it didn’t fit, you were not lying about it being an athletic cut 😂
@carl, would u plz consider reviewing 2 waxed jackets plz !
1 freenote cloth waxed jacket
2 iron and resin cruiser jacket
Those are 2 jackets I’ve got that are freaking amazing !!!
Any insight on the extra heavy Iron Heart hoodies? It's $300 but seems like a really quality buy. I know some people say denim-makers should stay only making denim, but I think an Iron Heart zip-up hoodie will be a great forever purchase.
Bravestar makes a cool hoodie.
I agree, its in preorder now I believe.
I know this is an older video but I have been looking at some of the brave star hoodies have you had a chance to check any of them out? thanks for the videos I love watching them🍻
I understand the shorts and jacket thing, if you’re just lounging around the house and need to run a quick errand why change into jeans when you can just grab a hoodie or jacket and be on your way. If they’re outside for an extended period of time (like not just walking between buildings, going from the car into a building etc.) I have no idea why they didn’t just put on something warmer than shorts
I have an American Giant hoodie which I love. I was lucky enough to find it in a local thrift store.
Good because their customer service is garbage. Great hoodies though.
"is that just brain damage?" omg ...phrase after my own heart right there. I have said that for YEARS. The fuckin year round shorts dude who occasionally pairs them with a snow jacket.....perplexing
Love hoodies. Nice
Yeah buddy!
I used to have a great American Giant pull over and I wore it out. Then about a year ago I got a zip up and it felt like the quality dipped dramatically. Has anyone else experienced that?
Yes, the one guy wearing shorts a hoodie and Birkenstocks with woolen socks there's one in Medicine half there's one in Calgary I think there's one in every city
Nice hoodies but where can I get that mug?
good quality cashmere zip up hoodie is the way to go dresses up or down last forever if you take care of it regulates temperature better costs a bit more but so much nicer than an overpriced cotton mix fleece hoodie
Where did you get your coffee mug?
So my OG comment didn't age well about only needing the carhartt hoodies...just bought an American giant.
Iron and resin has an awesome looking hoodie and great waxed jackets! Def a brand to check out btw
Didn't wear a hoodie since like 7th grade but this was a really nice video!
Glad you liked it!! They're not really my go-to but I do enjoy wearing them when it comes time to relax
No list is legit without birdwell beach britches hoodies. Lifetime warranty and handmade in cali. Excellent quality and very plush $110.
Great video as always Carl! I love your content, but I am surprised to see this video come out. I'm usually bombarded by the #menswear world that hoodies are for slobs, not appropriate, try these alternatives, the antithesis of #menswear, etc. What's your take? I love and wear hoodies, albeit in selective situations. Good to see hoodies getting some good press.
check out the 100 year hoodie
Shorts with a hoodie explained: I get hot easily. Especially inside. With synthetic heat. But I also get cold. But as long as my core is warm, the rest of me is fine. Makes it easy to layer up my core and just shed those and have on a pair of shorts and a t shirt while inside.
Can you review the American Giant flannels? I’d love to get your take on them!
I got you covered bro! ruclips.net/video/gnbT-MFKg3Q/видео.html
@@CarlMurawski you are a gentleman and a scholar
You should do arbourwear hoodies
Hey what brand is the one you have in in this video
Berkeley Supply BS basics hoodie is a good one... I got 4 of them.. $130 so a little pricey..
What about Filson's Prospector Hoodie on clearance for $45? Retail price is $88.
Composition is 75/25 cotton/poly blend. And it's imported. Weighs at 13oz.
I saw several shorts today.
I live in Sweden.
Oh no, they're everywhere!!!!
Have you tried Uniqlo fleeced lined hoodies? They’re awesome
I havent! Sounds cozy though
For sizing reference how tall are you?
Your vid made me email Flint/Tinder to change size of hoodie.
Thnx
My pa can wear shorts to a blizzard anyday🤣
What about Reigning Champ ?
Woah a 5 pack at Costco not going to lie kinda intrigued
Have you tried outdoor clothing by Prometheus Design Werx?
I wish Flint & Tinder would come back with the 10 year crew sweatshirt.
Me too man
yessss the hoodie and short combo is what we wear in colorado 🏳🔴🔵🔶️©️
You should be a review of a vollebak product
I have yet to find a Hoodie with a larger-than-usual hoodie that I prefer. Can anyone let me know where I can find one?
I personally don't like zippers as they tend to be a point of failure. Not saying I won't buy a nice ziperless jacket or a half zip, but I do like a nice pullover hoodie.
Has anyone bought a Origin Maine heavy hoodie? Kind of looking at purchasing one but I'm not seeing a ton of reviews on it.
I had a close friend growing up and he only wore shorts. Eventually we both went on a Boy Scout camping trip so cold he had to wear pants(I think it was in the 20’s Fahrenheit). He looked kinda ridiculous in pants. He just had super long legs for his size and nothing fit him right. Maybe there are other reasons for those people who always wear shorts, but that’s the only one I’ve heard firsthand.
Rue Porter makes really good hoodies. Probably about the same quality and cheaper.
I have trunks for legs, so they got hot man 😅. My top half on the other hand...
The temperature here is NOT dipping. Forecast for this Sunday is 97 degrees.
Nice cup there- who makes that? 👍 Nevermind I just saw your link😁
Carhartts midweight $40 hoodies are honestly all u ever need imo.
But is it all you'll ever _want?_
@@Mister_Phafanapolis no, I WANT a double thick arborwear that doesn't have a company logo on it 🤣
The shorts comment really hit close to home 😭. Still a great video
Lol, sorry about that!!!
One of my many dislikes about hoodies are the hand pockets are too small for adults and the hoodie is designed for short and tiny men. Additionally there are no pockets for water bottles and or other necessary items etc. I reside in Northern Nevada and we get into the single digits down to zero. So far Carhartt is the only heavy weight hoodie I own....but I'm open to trying another brand if its sized for American men and has more pockets for the working man or for men in very cold climates.
