  • American Giant impressed me with their superb hoodie last year, so I was curious about the rest of their products. They’re all made from American grown cotton, all their factories are here in the USA, and their entire supply chain is domestic to the United States. So for all those commenters who are very vocal about supporting US made goods: this is the company for you.

    Reviews of clothing, boots, and accessories for men, along with style advice and life philosophy. I've been working with my hands for my entire life as a mechanic, tow truck driver, and eventually a licensed electrician. Being a blue collar guy, I look for certain elements in a product: is it durable? Is it high-quality? Will it perform well over its service life? Whether boots, pants, jackets, or tools I believe it's best to buy once and cry once by getting the best you can afford. With so many options these days, choosing the best product can become a difficult decision, but that's where I come in. Helping you stay stylish, rugged, and handsome.
    I don't care where it's made as long as it's made well, and allows you to buy less and buy better.

      The problem is the wages paid are not enough and the labour pool is too small. Lots of options for producing in both prestige countries and non-prestige countries. With many African countries looking to increase their manufacturing sectors, that is another frontier that will pose further challenge.

    Had so much trouble getting T-shirts that were not so thin enough they wear out in a month. Usually go with Carhartt with the pocket. Tried the American Giant and while the pocket is a little smaller, and a little lighter weight fabric, they are the best fitting for me. They run different colors now and again. Everything you said, spot on.

    Absolutely love the hoodie and 100% cotton tshirts. I live in the UK and have never paid this kind of premium for tshirts plus shipping to the UK. BUT the colour holds and they feel great after many washes. Trying to find an equivalent in the UK. But nothing compares after a few washes and wares.

    Walmart had a T Shirt made by George about 2 years ago. They were a mid to heavy weight material and they fit me perfectly. I have worn the six I bought almost everyday for these past two years and they still haven't even begun to fray at the collar, amazing! They get washed so much, I'm sure they have faded some but not much and they still hold up very, very well. Of course they don't offer them anymore. Why the heck do they do this?

    Swet tailor and Duer are 2 companies that make the most comfortable clothing I’ve ever worn. Would love to see your opinion on them. Duer is Canadian and Swet Tailer is American. Both companies specialize in stretch clothing. Swet makes some dress clothing that feels like you are wearing sweat pants and stretch jeans etc. Duer is more of a casual clothing company but my favorite are their jeans and the Jean jacket is so comfortable as it has stretch denim so you can wear a snug fit and still have full movement. I’m not associated with either company but was a backer for both on Kickstarter years ago when they first started out. They have just gotten better since.

      @@CarlMurawski I have 3 American Giant products, all in 2XL. My hoodie fits me pretty much perfectly; a bit trim, but not tight (though the hood is a bit larger than I'd prefer). The fit of my polo shirt is a bit loose and boxy, but not bad at all. My merino wool pocket tee is a bit tight, as though it were meant to be an undergarment. It's not so tight that I can't wear it over an undershirt, though. I checked the sizing chart for each item and was still a bit surprised at how the polo and pocket Tee fit me.
      Admittedly, they are very different products, but the fits are also very different; and not everyone will expect the same company that makes a trim, athletic cut hoodie to also make a more billowy polo shirt. I sure didn't.

    • @glenntorres5553
      @glenntorres5553 3 года назад

      @@CarlMurawski Yeah, at least between products. I have a large zip up hoodie, so when I got the mechanics jacket I got a large and it was much larger, so exchange for a medium. I also have a medium pullover, crew sweater, and large baseball jacket, all have a similar fit. The classic tee is boxier and a good length for me, the premium tee has a nicer fit, especially in the sleeves and shoulders, but much longer for some reason. I think I'll also size down to a medium next time cause the large shirts fit a little bigger than my old large shirts I got a few years ago. Again, it's my favorite clothing brand, so I love all the products I've gotten, but I wouldn't expect to get the same fit across the board.

    Nice video Carl. I'm not trolling here, but I have to point out that I have been buying and wearing Fruit of the Loom and then Gilden heavyweight (5.6oz) tee shirts for 30+ years. I wear them under my surgical scrubs because they soak up sweat really well. I buy them 12 at a time (mixed styles and colors) for about $3 each delivered. These are made in South and Central America, but they are sold, warehoused and shipped by USA companies in the USA with USA employees. They are of excellent quality. I can buy 10-13 of these for the same price as the American Giant. I am willing to pay extra for made in USA, but not 10-13 times as much. You said yourself that there isn't anything new in tee shirt design. To each his/her own. But how much better can the AG tee be than the Gilden? Again, not trolling. Just offering another point of view. Thanks for doing what you do, Carl!

      Fair enough man, I know you always offer thoughtful (and hilarious at times) comments. This is why I always ask for others input. My lifestyle is just one in millions, so this kind of feedback is very welcomed. I think the real difference is in feel with these tees vs Gildan or similar. Those tend to have an odd scratchy feeling until you wash them a few dozen times or so. I don't really like having polyester against my skin either, even though it may be all in my head. We even switched over to 100% cotton pajamas for our kids because I just don't know what a textile that's entirely synthetic will do over time. Again, it may be a little "tin foil hat" of me but there it is.

    I’m in the process of replacing some shirts in my closet and I’d love to see some replies with good recommendations.
    Here’s what I look for in clothing products:
    1. Organic/non-synthetic fabrics mostly
    2. If there are some synthetic materials, they must be fully recycled/reclaimed
    3. I’m 6’3” tall, so a longer split or curved hem is ideal but anything longer than average is fine
    4. Made in USA (preferred, not mandatory)
    5. The manufacturer is considered to have responsible/sustainable core values
    Any suggestions?

  • @misha9952
    @misha9952 3 года назад +1

    The hodie is "shockingly," good. I have a classic and a slub tee and the latter is definitely my favorite. The tees are certainly no hoodie. The fit is a bit too long and boxy for me at 6ft tall 180lb. I buy a size smaller from American Giant for trimmer fit. Their catalog always shows people doing either vocational or skill work to advertise their produc, so I should've known the fit isn't going to be contemporary (slimmer and more fashion'y?!). If you want to support domestic manufacturing and have a solid no bells and whistles looser fit go to T-shirt then these are a no brainer option (just don't expect the hodie quality).

      Definitely smaller. The Duluth, Carhartt, and Patagonia workwear fit is almost a full size big. If you're going to approximate your size, I'd go a full size down in American Giant.

    As usual, a thoughtful review. The hoodie at $118 feels overpriced. The tees seem in the right value sweet spot. I personally like the upper end tees and sweats from Landsend. The hoodie is a nonstarter but the tees look like the value is there.

    • @CarlMurawski
      @CarlMurawski  3 года назад +1

      Fair enough! I think if you got one in your hands you may change your mind. It's leagues above any other hoodie I have, and actually less expensive than some which just aren't nearly as good. If you have an opportunity to feel on in person I'd love to know your thoughts.

      I definitely would recommend getting dedicated work shirts with workout shirts underneath. I used to always wear a duluth flannel with an adidas workout shirt underneath. Keep it loosely buttoned for breathability, the workout shirt helps with sweat and you won't damage a nice t shirt. Plus, you get more bang for your buck on workout shirts, which are almost as expensive but nowhere near as durable
      Otherwise I just a multipack of neon color shirts on amazon and wear them until they fall apart, then they become shop rags

      3sixteen makes their tees in a long cut. They do run trim, so you may need to size up. At 6'0, 195ish, a medium feels like a small and a large is a hair too large IMO.
