Poverty is a situation that is bad but being poor does not make you a bad person. I admire you for having the balls to go into these places destroying the myth that everything is wild an chaotic, dangerous. I’m sure it can be but I grew up in an American ghetto and my childhoods was great and I love my city in spite of its issues. I don’t know, it’s a beautiful struggle.
Certainly being black helps Willie to maneuver these poor neighborhoods, he looks just like one of us, only when he talks will you notice his American accent, a white person may not be this lucky to move around freely without attracting a stare from locals or harassment /money extortion.

From me to you, if a white man produced this video I wouldn’t care to support to be honest. I’d just rather see us do it( whatever that my be) I don’t want to see other races walking though black communities under the premise of “ danger”. In my travels, I have found that some of the most generous and kind people are those that are poor financially. But they are rich in spirit! I wish that some one, as you said would come and modernize their homes with electricity and running water that is heavily subsidized. Thank you, Willie, for showing this to us!
Where does the govt. want these poor people with their families to leave to? They're supposed to build them a temporary housing, even if it's made out of shipping containers. If they evict them with force, some will go form a new slum in another area. Others will become homeless, and crime will be on the rise. So how does that help ?
You are right but all these people have their various states. Abuja has been marked as the capital city where no slum is supposed to be. That's how the former capital, Lagos, was destroyed. All the evil in the city is planned from many of these slums.

Most of the slum dwellers rent their homes, so they will be fine just moving somewhere else or returning to their villages. The real losers will be the landlords who have their property destroyed. But those people knew the risks of building in an unauthorized place.

I think when they moved the capital to Abuja, these landlords thought building residential homes there would generate higher rent. But they missed the target, cos it's not nice to have ghettos built around where commercial buildings dominate. Unless they meet standard. Well, if the houses get torn down they asked for it.

The people have to be properly educated to get rid of that mindset, but I'm almost certain that the Nigerian politicians do not want that, as it works in their advantage by keeping the population divided and blaming each other for the problems that they the politician themselves are creating.

Listen, what you are doing is amazing because we get to see how the rich live and how the poor live. The differences are huge in every country, but they look to be very stark in this one. Rwanda essentially pulled itself out of a genocide and is rebuilding itself and its brand… how does a huge country like Nigeria turn the corner in dealing with its poor?
Let Wike go and put that place in order instead of concentrating on the city area. Those people are equally Nigerians, and they deserve to live in a decent environment.

I wouldn't generalise mate, not everyone in that low income settlement will be living a happy and fulfilled life. Life in a low income (I hate the word slum) isn't any different to living elsewhere. I do agree the community spirit will be much higher. Though this can also have its downside. Good video though mate. Very interesting

Although British, my early years were spent in Northern Nigeria and I visited slums like this from time to time as a child. One thing that always struck me was the sense of community. Practically everyone knew and looked out for the other. Definitely had deja vu from your Rwanda video except that the Rwanda slum was immaculate by comparison 🏠🏚

Beside your drivers ethnic biased one (these are northerners-Hausa) which simply is not true, as my wife is from Abuja and also the video shows how multicultural the population is....there is nothing wrong here. Maybe Nigerians need to step up and question their own sociological values first. While Nigerian men and women try to get their entry into Guinness World Record Book for the amount of children they can make in a fiscal year, the politicians are trying to make infrastructural master plans which in the end are not worth the paper they are written on. Because even for example the government has a plan for 1 million people for a certain area to grow within their plan, 5 to 7 million will want to join schools, hit well build roads, find fresh water and electricity, a functioning sewer system, daily security etc. You have got the idea. Bring ANY super successful western politician to Nigeria to govern this country , he/she WILL fail. Beside super high birth rate making Nigeria the most populated country in Africa and one of the "leading" ones in the world , NOTHING can be planned for the next fiscal year and ethnic and religious divisons make the rest accountable for the anarchic situation of this country with definetly people who have a certain national pride. But these are getting more and more rare these days.

It was rough but I could see “ a little something”. But here? Market bad, trash everywhere. The Main Street of the residential part looked rough too…and I felt fear for you, which is something I did not feel when you went into the slums in Kigali. It did not look fine to me. You have been out of the States for a while and now your internal lens as to what looks fine and does not look fine has changed.
