      I so much appreciate that Harry, took his time to visit Makoko, to give us an update of their school/orphanage project that they started about two years ago thanks to @indigotraveller, another RUclipsr.
      But I can’t help but to caution people about donating to projects without asking relevant questions and knowing details to any projects first, making sure the plans for the project would actually go through when we donate. Also to make sure to know that the reason why you are donating matches the reason why they are raising funds. The same person that is showing Harry around had told us two years back, they’re raising funds to help homeless children, it doesn’t look like that now.
      We were told to donate to help Makoko build an ORPHANAGE CENTER because the CHILDREN HAD NO PLACE TO SLEEP. Fast forward to this year, THE SAME GUY DIDN’T SHOW US an ORPHANAGE CENTER. What THEY SHOWED US was a school, that I take it is A PRIVATE SCHOOL, which is a business. The government didn’t build this school, people of the internet did. Which is great, but if you consider that most PEOPLE probably donated because they THOUGHT THEY WERE HELPING HOMELESS CHILDREN, that’s why they donated, it’s a shame. They never showed us these shelters. They never showed us where the children sleep or where they eat. So, make sure before you donate, the reason why you’re donating matches with their reason for fundraising.

    I like you guys to know that Makoko is not a recognized settlement and many times, the government had tried to resettle them away from the waters but they always refused because their ancestors, who were fisherman, had been there before Nigeria was created. Thus, they are left on their own because you cant bring down a place that is ancestral to a people.

      They are recent migrants from Dahomey. They came after the independence in the 1960s to join with thr earlier settlers of Ilaje fishermen. The area was discovered by the Ilaje fishermen and Egun. It was a fishermen camp thst have now grown into a community occupied by foreigners from Republic of Benin and Togo.

      @olatundeolaniyi7669 6 месяцев назад +3

      Please consider portraying Makoko and Nigeria more thoughtfully in your vlogs. While it's important to showcase diverse areas, remember to research government interventions aimed at improving such settlements. It's essential to understand that no government would willingly allow its citizens to live in harsh conditions like this one . However, the residents of Makoko often choose to stay because of their deep-rooted connection to the island, requiring the government to act delicately. Also, the pollution in the waters is largely due to overpopulation. There are other water-based communities in Nigeria that do not look anything like this one . I encourage you to explore and highlight these areas as well.

    It would be nice if the slums could be at least cleaned up. Like everyone cleans after their own household or a fine. Because this amount of rubbish is nothing to do with poverty but laziness. I know, people are going to say, how can they remove garbage when they don't have a disposal system. Then organize one. Each house goes to a designated spot to where it's collected daily and removed to another designated place.

    • @Kolepto

      Yeah good point. I guess there might be a gap of education beyond what we consider "common sense". In this scenario I'd assume some of them are struggling just to survive.
      As a matter of principle, setting a standard and being a role model is key. People need someone to look up to.
