Nigeria was my favourite country (for it's people) on my UK to Cape Town trip. Lovely people and very welcoming, if a little tiresome at times. The corruption is a pain, but its the same everywhere in west Africa. Whilst the constant police stops wear you down, they are there to keep you safe ultimately. Roll with it, youve got this and at least you're making progress. Things get a little easier in Cameroon and much simpler by Angola (apart from the fuel shortages). Keep those wheels turning Norally 👍
As a Gambian residing in the UK, as I watch this video from an unbiased standpoint, it is evident that there are still exceptional and courteous police officers who warmly embrace everyone, as showcased in these videos. However, there are still many corrupt and morally compromised individuals in the police force, hindering the progress and growth not only of the country but also of Africa as a whole.
I saw mostly smiling welcoming faces in this video and one dick who just thought he could try it on. I`ve had holidays in Gambia and Kenya, got out and about among the locals and most people are lovely but you will encounter the ones who just want money for nothing, that`s the same story wherever you go in the world
I have to give a thousand thumbs up for your bravery going though Nigeria. You are a, in tune with things, lady and handle the stops very well! The corruption is so unfortunate. To a great extent, this video shows how peaceful, adventurous, happy and accommodating Nigerians are. This is different from the negative and abusive picture that is always shown to the outside world about the country. Every nation have its own good and bad so everyone can have a positive perspective (without discriminating) of The country.
Especially for a woman...in a rural place like that there are plenty of places to hide a body...not that anyone would come looking for her...pulling out that roll of money at that gas station wasn't the smartest move. For her safety she'd be better off staying home and watching other people's videos or take a man with you next time.

That's insane! I wish you good luck and an unforgettable experience on your journey. Be careful and stay healthy. Greetings from Germany from a biker who is a bit jealous.
I had the exact same experience at Abuja International Airport after arrival. An official (lady) at the final security check just before the airport's exit confiscated my suitcase and said "Give me something". When I told her I don't understand, she said again, "Give me something, anything", and refused to release my suitcase until I complied. All of this happened right in front of several heavily armed security officers (maybe military), all of them heard this, but none of them interjected, even when I protested. Apparently this is perfectly normal in Nigeria.
I am Nigerian. I was traveling out lately and I was asked for money by about 5-6 different staffs at different checkpoint. When I told my friend about the experience, he told me that they were all in it together. That at the end of each work day, they split the money they have collected from "tasking" travelers among themselves. In the meantime, I would like to ask you a question. Are you born again?
@@DrDingus It's a longer story as I was also held up for about 2 hours by a guy in passport control who confiscated my passport to solicit a bribe. I refused and when they changed shifts, the next passport control officer took my passport out from under the counter where the previous guy put it, stamped it, and let me through. It was a business trip and I was concerned that the shuttle sent by the company to pick me up would leave without me. My phone couldn't connect to the local network so I couldn't call. So I did what I had to to get out of there. It was a gaunlet of bribe solicitation to get through that airport. The rason I commented here was because the same term "give me something" was used by the second person, so I wanted to share.

In the normal countries the officers policies take care about other things. 1. This barrier is to stop people and ask for something. 2. This is very disrespect to any travelers. The Africa problem is not poorest place but poorest mentality. If changes this poorest mentality, the countries can change from they poorest in prosperity.
9:08 Such a different culture. I command you for being so kind and respectful in the midst of situations that can be definitely scary at times. Don't worry. The UK police do it too. Here in Britain, they don't expicitly ask you for money for themselves, like we saw in this video, but they try to find something with which they can "fine you" with - any excuse to claim you are "breaking the law' so that they can collect revenue from people. And, it's not just police - traffic wardens, environmental enforcement officers, council workers, etc. do this also. Corrupt people are everywhere across the face of our beautiful earth.

A lot of that nice police footage on this channel is a result of her having three go-pros on and being a westerner.

I have to give a thousand thumbs up for your bravery going though Nigeria. You are a, in tune with things, lady and handle the stops very well! The corruption is so unfortunate. I am glad to see some just want to know your business and aren’t anything more than that. Pretty intense day...glad you didn’t have rains. Great video Noraly!
To a great extent, this video shows how peaceful, adventurous, happy and accommodating Nigerians are. This is different from the negative and abusive picture that is always shown to the outside world about the country. Every nation have its own good and bad so everyone can have a positive perspective (without discriminating) of The country.

Alone in Nigeria!? Cop asking for money is far from the worst thing, which could've happened.
Yeah, so scary.. Espesially for east asian
Especially for a woman...in a rural place like that there are plenty of places to hide a body...not that anyone would come looking for her...pulling out that roll of money at that gas station wasn't the smartest move. For her safety she'd be better off staying home and watching other people's videos or take a man with you next time.

When I worked in Nigeria I learned to keep a $20 in my pocket and hide the rest of my money. That way when the inevitable demand for “gratuity” came from the police or other government official, I could plead that the $20 was all I had. It happened a lot. Those stereotypes don’t come from nowhere.

@@rick262 Yep, I'm 66 years old and I usually do the same when I travel in my own country Romania. And to be honest, the same thing happened to me almost everywhere in Eastern Europe. Apparently this is perfectly normal in Nigeria.
you should have asked her how she would have felt if she didnt eat breakfast that morning
Did you give them something? What happened?
