For phone calls one usually or at least often hears "(auf) Wiederhören" for the goodbye, literally "(until I) hear you again".
True! Forgot to mention that. Even though sometimes, we also use that without really knowing if you're gonna "hear" the other person again necessarily. :D
Dave! Da bist du! As a native english speaker, to me a" beer stein" is usually decorated and has a hinged lid. I would say the workers were drinking out of "beer mugs". Anyway, I enjoyed your analysis... Gute Arbeit! 🙂
From Etymonline:
stein (n.)
earthenware mug, especially one for beer, 1855, from German Stein, shortened form of Steinkrug "stone jug," from Stein "stone" (see stone (n.)) + Krug "jug, jar." Compare Old English stæne "pitcher, jug."
Dude this is an awesome video! I was wondering what they were saying. Your vid is super thorough with the vocabulary and explanations which is really helpful. Danke schön!!
Just watched that episode a couple of weeks ago, very interesting talking about the German language in this episode... 👏👍👌✌🤘🖖🤙🍻
That’s interesting about stein and stone, because I was looking up countries who make it illegal to name a child a certain name and the German example the article used was Stein which means stone and the reason being because the child cannot identify with being named an object or something. What’s funny, or at least I think it is, is I have a friend who’s child is named Stone (American). But I figured the drinking Vessel was called a stein because of something to do with a stone, idk some type of slang. Thanks for clearing that up
I think it comes from Steingut, which is a type of clay that beer mugs are made from. You call them Steingut and never Stein in German but I think in America it got shortened being introduced by German Migrants.
Dave do you do any german word etymology. Like congratulations= gluckwunsch. Gluck means luck, and Wunsch means wish. Why would you wish someone luck after they have accomplished something? Is there more cultural context to this?
Thats a pretty good question. I’m a native speaker myself and I never thought about it that way
I love these videos. So good to pick up phrasing and vocabulary, ne?
I haven't gotten this far in the show, is there significance to the phrase "throw yourself in the mud" to the show or is this a German phrase?
Dave it’s from Steingut, as they were made of steinzeug 👍
I am amazed they did such a good job with German but the Spanish is so bad even I cringe and I can barely speak it…
