- Mike discreetly escorts Werner to evaluate the construction site for Gus's planned meth "superlab."
Season 4 Episode 5 - Quite A Ride: In a flash forward (taking place during Breaking Bad's "Ozymandias"), Francesca quickly shreds documents and Saul frantically collects cash, mementos, and paperwork from his office before contacting his "disappearer" for a new identity. In 2003, Jimmy convinces a customer to buy several prepaid cellular phones as a way to maintain his privacy and then gets the idea to profit by reselling prepaid phones on the street. He sells them all, but the venture proves unsuccessful because he is mugged by three teenagers. As Kim treats his wounds, he blames himself for not recognizing the threat and promises to see a psychologist but instead goes to work the next day as usual. Kim is assigned as pro bono counsel for several defendants. When a problem arises with recent Mesa Verde paperwork, Kim sees her current case through to completion before responding, for which Paige later reprimands her. Mike discreetly escorts foreign structural engineers through the industrial laundry so they can evaluate the space below as a site for Gus's planned meth "superlab." Gus is impressed by one, Werner Ziegler, and offers him the job of planning and overseeing the construction of the facility.

Better Call Saul is the prequel to the award-winning series Breaking Bad, set six years before Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) became Walter White's lawyer. When we meet him, the man who will become Saul Goodman is known as Jimmy McGill, a small-time lawyer searching for his destiny, and, more immediately, hustling to make ends meet. Working alongside, and often against, Jimmy is "fixer" Mike Erhmantraut (Jonathan Banks), a beloved character introduced in Breaking Bad. The series will track Jimmy's transformation into Saul Goodman, the man who puts "criminal" in "criminal lawyer."

Put up with discomfort just to look at the job site.
Uses low tech record keeping that would be hard to leak and easy to destroy.
Shows immediate distaste for the impracticalities of the job, proving he has no issue bring up problems.
Stays focused on the task completely and doesn't say a word he doesn't need to.
And this isn't even the full scene.
Werner is great.
Also the previous guy wasn't chosen because he spoke about a job he did previously, and Gus couldn't risk that
"Stays focused on the task completely". Lol, who's going tell him. Should have gone with the other guy.
And then acted like a total amateur and messed everything up because "muh wife 😢"
@@nashooo5903spoken like somebody who has never been loved
O sure Werner doesn't stay to Gus's standards, after months and months of living in a box, but the fact it took months and months and that Gus is completely insane I think is more important here.
The whole point of his storyline is that nothing but a machine could ever live up to what Gus wanted, had Mike not gotten involved with the project the mental breakdown would have been universal and the project would have been doomed forever.
I absolutely love this moment. there's something about watching really skilled people working on their feilds
You mean actors?
@@sarcastaball dude, I've seen your comments. You are neither funny nor witty or whatever you are going for. It looks sad honestly. Like you are a lone guy who broke up bad with his family and now vents in YT comments
He's a made up fictional character, the script writers were probably talking out of their arses, and it fools a simple rube like yourself.
I know I keep coming back to this scene.
im guessing your field isnt spelling.
Classic German worker attitude right there
"This job is near impossible and unlikely to succeed...........I'll get it done"
Werner was such a good character
But pretty stupid

He deserved better than a bullet in the back of his skull.
But a little too mouthy to be in the business he was in..
Werner Ziiiiiiegler
The whole lab construction part was my favorite part of the series! Interesting both visually and emotionally.
I agree it was an awesome plot in S4, integral to the outcome of both BCS and BrBa.
Mine too, it was so interestimg
I like the contrast of an overconfident/shade tree engineer and an engineer like Warner. Apparently, he's worth 50 Mike's.
The southern wall looked beautiful
Mike was too soft with him. Gave him the illusion that everything would be alright.
Yeah he was truly soft and good to him, which is why he murdered him in cold blood for money 😂😂😂
@@stairwaytoheaven8 You're missing his point. Mike was way too friendly with Werner which is why Werner was under the impression that he could sneak off to go see his wife and that there would be no repercussions. If Mike had been as harsh with Werner as he had been with Jesse or Walt or anyone in Breaking Bad, Werner would have known the danger he was putting both himself and his wife in by sneaking off.
@@giantWario I kinda agree with this, for example the R&R episode should never have happened - at most the "entertainment" should have gone to them in the Pollos compound. But I guess Mike needed someone to relate to
@@giantWario That's precisely the point. This is a prequel that helps us to understand why MIke acts the way he does in Breaking Bad
@@TheSquirrelbeast ...what in my comment led you to believe that I don't perfectly realize that exactly? Or that anyone at all out there doesn't understand the concept of a prequel?
I feel like the show was dropping an Easter egg by using the name Heisenberg and then bringing in a German engineer named Werner. Werner Heisenberg is a German man who got the Nobel peace prize in 1932 for his contributions to quantum physics.
What exactly do you think the Nobel *PEACE* prize is awarded for?
@@jb76489 It's the Peace Prize in Physics.
@@andrewlloyd1198the Nobel Peace Prize is different from the Nobel Prize in Physics. The other three Nobel Prizes are Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, and Literature
Yeah just finished watching oppenheimer and that popped in my mind 😂

Poor Werner. Little did he know..........
I miss him.
iam sure he did know thats why hes dead
@@martinal-almani3192like little did he know beforehand (which is already a bit strange for this character) but he didn't know that it would end him.
Im glad they casted a real german actor for the role
As opposed to unreal german actors?
@@sarcastaball Yes? People get casted for roles that don’t match their nationality all the time.
@@NeoCreo1 If they are, in fact, a German actor, they can't not be a German actor, thus can't be unreal. If you cast a norwegian actor to play a Greek person, they aren't an unreal Greek actor. They're a norwegian actor. And a real one at that. You follow? Do you get it now as I've actually spoon-fed it to you?
@@sarcastaball What are you blabbering about man. People are just happy Vince Gilligan casted native German speaking actors for the parts. Unlike in Breaking Bad where there were some terrible spanish speakers who were supposed to be spanish. It sucked.
@@sarcastaballI wonder what your parents said when the doctor dropped you on your head six times in a row.
ASMR vibes for the evaluation lol.
Werner was cool, but he REALLY underestimated who he was working for
Gus seems calm and reasonable
He thought he was working for lazy Americans.
Agreed ! and I never understood why people felt bad for him as if he didn’t understand how serious the situation was but still ran away 🤷♂️
@@Biggestbhich I always figured he was just a tad bit too naive for his own good. But I'm not heavy duty into the series
He is such a good man, i hope nothing bad happens to him
He got shot and died
This is the breaking bad universe I’m sure he’s gonna be just fine 👍
He and Gale are going to open up a coffee shop together.
There are so many stars in New Mexico. He is going to go out there to get a better look.
Werner should be taking antidepressants for the job
Other than Werner, papa varga and howard, he was probably the most innocent minded person in the breaking bad universe.
He is Werner
you forget Lydia.
Werner was still in the life, a criminal, he does not really compare to Howard or Papa Varga. He might only have done construction and not been part of the drug operation, but he probably had a good idea what he was making space for.
And Lydia was among the worst of them, working so closely with Jack's gang and being willing to off anyone at the slightest inconvenience. She was clearly not made to be a criminal, she was skittish and irrational, which made her even more dangerous.
@@jotarokujo5132Lydia threw people under the bus to save herself multiple times, she deserved what happened to her
@jotarokujo5132 are you stupid man? Did you even watch the show? She was despicable.
I always wondered to what extent Werner knew he was dealing with a criminal mastermind and not some harmless businessman
When they put a bag over your head, you should figure SOME things out.
That's... kind of an interesting question. There are many engineering projects where you are brought to a foreign country, not told *exactly* where you are, subject to considerable secrecy, and not allowed to come and go as you please - usually military things, mind, and done through large contracting firms.
So at the outset, it could readily look like something of that nature. But there were also some major red flags to say this one in particular was Not Like That, too. So it's more normal than it looks, I think, but also Very Deeply Worrisome past that point.
TBH, in Ziegler's shoes I'd not be thinking "drug lord" so much as "foreign government building an illegal facility in another country." I could pretty easily convince myself that Gus and Mike are intel folks.
I think it’s more likely that Werner thought it had something do with the US government then a drug lord
This is so authentically german.
when werner writes things down in his notebook about the building this shows that he is an engineer. i love the attention to detail. bravo vince
ZIEEEEGLER
Lalo is so astute
That's the "south...wall"?
Thank heavens Google Translate was on point, otherwise I would have had now idea what you were saying or referring to!
2:19 Can anyone tell me what those are? Are they used to evaluate the hardness of the ground or something?
It’s a rebound hammer to measure strength and consistency
@@NightTracer101 Thanks
i love how mike says "so" to imply that he is waiting to hear whether or not he can build the lab, incredible attention to detail. bravo vince
Don't forget how he was keeping both of his legs firmly on the ground. At the same time! Just to make it clear that he is, in fact, standing up.
What an actor.
why was his head covered while inside the back of a van with no windows?
You want to make doubly sure he has no idea where he is.
He's an example of an average Joe in the BCS/BB world
I mean the guy is a master engineer, I would argue that alone makes him more than "average" especially given the scale and complications of the job it took him and a master of logistics like Gus to pull it off with a team
@@DTheCriticalyea he’s rather innocent to the scope, but def not average to ur normal person
average joe, apart from that one time he took a job for a major drug cartel. if you're in the game, you're in the game
What are those tools that he uses for the concrete? To measure the thickness and/or density of it?
It's called a Schmidt hammer. Engineers use it to estimate the strength of the concrete. If you press it to a surface a spring will release a metal rod, that rebounds from the surface and from this rebound you can estimate the strength of the surface of the material. That's the click you hear when he used the hammer. He probably wanted to know what kind of machinery would be needed to break through the concrete to create the tunnnel. Since this job required maxiumum dicretion heavy machinery was almost out of question, Werner felt sorry for Kais shoulders in advance. :D
Gooby......interesting answer. I learned something new today. Schmidt hammer. Thanks. @@goobygoobkins1623
This felt a lot like a gta scene of building your empire

I believe the 1st cocky guy would've finished the job without getting shot by Mike.
Just imagining,sorry😭Zeeeeiigler*
Not sure he had a big mouth and was already bragging about his last job.
@@Agent00KK I think after Ziegler, that guy was hired by Gus to finish the mess 😂
Do you remember which episode that was? I've been thinking about it ever since I saw this video lol
That guy had a big mouth as well
That guy was way too cocky and would have screwed it up big time. Mike and Gus knew it was a nearly impossible job and someone with that attitude was obviously in over their head and was only seeing dollar signs. Werner respects the craft and cares about the safety of his crew.
Interesting if you consider Gus is standing there the whole time, watching from "the dark" paying attention, observing. Gus being Gus he likely was already standing there far before they even came there, having done it aswell with the previous guy.
I don’t think there is a video of the other guy looking at the superlab so could y’all upload that clip as well? Had to skim through multiple episodes to find the scene just to watch that 5 minute scene

Does anybody know the instrument Werner uses at 2:19? It sounds really satisfying and I'd like to know what it does.
It's called a Schmidt hammer. It's used to test the strength of concrete/rock. He wanted to see how reinforced the concrete was.
@@Videogame7276 That makes sense. The previous engineer ones seemed to do electronic measurements without even testing the ground he'd be digging through, so it's no wonder Gus picked Zieeeeegler.
@@skeith350 he mainly picked Ziegler because the other guy blabbed about the tunnel him and his colleagues dug in El Paso. Gus was all about secrecy and didn't want to take any chances with the other guy. If you go back to watch the clip when he's talking to Mike, Gus calls immediately after he talks about another job he did.
@@Videogame7276 True. I thought it was a combination of that and the guy seeming WAY too cocky when Gus and Mike both knew it's a nearly impossible job to make the super lab.
Sadly, if not Mike, it would probably be Lalo who'd find, question and kill Werner.

Interesting how this show demonstrates people at the absolute pinnacle of their respective feilds:
-Werner: engineering
-Mike and Hank: Police
-Heisenburg: Chemistry
-Gus: Business
Vince Gilligan was once on Late Show with Stephen Colbert and the first question was "How do you feel about kids watching your show and they are influenced to become...high school chemistry teachers?!" Such a good show.
Mike had to kill his best friend.
