I have well over 500 hrs in my RS3 HCIM, while that isn't alot to some players, between working 50+ hrs a week and raising a family it's alot for me. I love the game and think the combat mechanics are incredibly well put together, between being able to click monster get drop, to optimising timings between basic abilities and thresholds to squeeze the maximum dps, all within the same system is a real feat, and it rewards new players and experienced players alike. I've earned mid 80's to a couple of 99's and am proud of my accounts progression!
With that said, I would be lying if I said that the idea of a fresh start world where achievements are more impressive didn't give me a tinge of excitement.

I got the new survey the other day, and in this new survey they did actual ask a question regarding fresh worlds with no MXT, so it's for sure something on their mind. as a on and off RS3 player, I would also drop my 1 maxed account, 1 completionist account to play on the fresh worlds. I doubt I'd put 10's of thousands of hours into them like I did for my comp cape account, but all the same, I think I'd enjoy it more.

The rs3 team is inept and lost any semblance of what runescape is. With that said it can be steered in a better direction but it as a game should probably be cut if I'm being honest. Its been so ran through by so many companies and managers and plagued with bad update with zero fixes on older bad updates and dead content. Its not feasible. Shift everything to old school.

This is an incredible video. For context, I'm a former RS3 player who's basically finished the game. I've gotten 120s, I've gotten the comp cape, the master quest cape, and basically finished the game. I then started an ironman and also played that. I probably have around 20k hours in the game across all my accounts, and I had quit with no intention of coming back last year. A new skill didn't entice me, any new boss or feature didn't entice me, the only thing that has enticed me is the thought of fresh servers.
I made a point to never spend money on the game (outside of memberships), but in exchange I spent thousands of hours. And I love so much about RS3 and do think it's such an amazing game with incredible lore, a great community, and the right amount of grinding, but only if you avoid treasure hunter, and that right there is the ugly truth about the game. They've made any accomplishment mean nothing, which is why I gravitated towards the completionist mindset, it was the only way I could get any enjoyment out of the game. I don't know if I'll ever come back to the game, runescape used to be such a huge part of my life but I feel like I've moved on, but who knows. Fresh servers with no treasure hunter, no dailyscape, and no fomo sounds like the best iteration of this game that I loved as a kid, and I hope they make that change for the betterment of the longevity of the game and for the playerbase that has stuck around through all this shit. I would hate to see a youtube video down the line titled "Jagex Shuts Down Runescape 3 Servers", I think it would be such a shame for a game that has been so influential in many of our lives.

There's 2 possible ways to look at it. Either they plan to remove Treasure Hunter and raise membership prices and simply went ahead with raising the price while they get ready to see how the getting rid of Treasure Hunter idea will work, or they posted the survey to get people's hopes up that there's gonna be less MTX in the future after they raise membership prices, when they in reality have no plans of getting rid of it anyways.
If it's the former which might be the best case scenario, then they severely handled it in the worst way possible and really should have just been more patient and it's pure greed to dime the shit out of the players. If it's the latter, that's straight up deceptive and cowardly monetization practices. But whichever case it is, they really don't deserve any benefit of doubt until we actually get to see them put that membership money where their mouth is.

  • @Gilsworth

i maxed a character in RS3 before they added archaeology and necromancy, if only because my character was created in 2003 and is old enough to get married, drink booze, and go to war and die (in that order), and the experience just progressively got worse and worse and worse.
The final straw for me was after I got 200mil firemaking xp, on a double xp weekend, just to say that I had gotten 200mil in something at least once. After I did that I felt completely hollow... what was the point? What did it amount to? What enjoyment or pride could I derive from this account? Literally the only thing that made me happy about that account was its longevity and untradable scythe drop from the 2003 halloween event.
I was reluctant to start over from scratch on OSRS, but there was no other option left. I made an ironman on OSRS, got it to base 80s and then figured I might as well just use my OG account and level that one up as well, unrestricted. I'm almost base 70s on that account, with a couple 99s.
The grind has been real, but it has also been rewarding. I find myself giving a shit and wanting to log on, to get the herb sack, to imbue my slayer helmet, to go down a wild chain of seemingly random tasks that makes my overarching goal easier, because gaining xp requires actual effort - and in taking this journey I am exposed to so much of the game, even the shitty parts like Fishing Trawler means something because now that I have my Angler Outfit I can be satisfied in knowing that I don't have to do that crap minigame ever again.
Can't see RS3 ever recovering unless they do a hard reset, delete MTX, make basic features like xp/hour free for everyone, and allow players to influence the game in a meaningful and healthy way.
But because of the lack of transparency, I'm also wondering if they can even do this and not go bankrupt, or have to fire half of their staff. Will be interesting to see how this progresses.

    • @giltdavig2589
      @giltdavig2589 Месяц назад +5

xp is only a small percentage of the game though, there is plenty in rs3 that takes real dedication. Infact you could probably make the argument that it is good to have fast xp rates since most of the game is based around endgame anyways. Go for mqc or something if you want a challenge. I feel like rs3 has mostly lost the veneration of xp anyways unless its a 120 all, its all about achievements now.
Tbh i think you are just seeing things with rose tinted glasses as you are having a new experience, were you to be a vet of osrs switching to rs3 and could look past mtx you would probably have the same feeling.
About the hard reset, were they to do this i feel it would kill the game. I have 28k runescore and am 10 achievements from trim, no way im grinding that again. Ill go to gw2 or something instead. And a game that is mainly veteran players i bet a lot will think the same. Then revenue from rs3 is cut drasticaly, and mtx infects osrs. Everyone says they'll leave, but the sunken cost fallacy exists and most wont.
Mtx wont go away fully, it just aint gonna happen, maybe if the gower brothers were in charge. It could go cosmetic only which i actually wouldn't mind.
But here's the thing you could just ignore it? Theres always that little x you can click. Yea people can buy keys for gp and xp but th p2w scale is kinda negligible when you compare it to a bond. The revenue for th could really help the game if it was used properly which i think is a better discussion than just getting rid of it.
And about letting players help decide future rs3 content idk...i'd have to see the system i guess. I feel like osrs poll thing is great for player trust but you probably miss out on a lot of great updates because of it. After all democracy is two wolves deciding how to have the sheep for dinner as they say.

The future should have been RS4, and I have been saying that for many years. Get rid of all the legacy stuff, clean up the spaghetti code, abandon RuneScript and RuneTek7 (it is 10+ year old now ffs), reduce the .6s ticks, update the tile grid system, rework and expand the map size, get rid of the dead content, update the world with a consistent graphics style in mind etc. In short, clean up the trash of the past 25 years RS accumulated. Learn from the mistakes of the past while still keeping what works.
If Jigglyflex started working on RS4 when the cracks started to seriously appear in RS3 (this what somewhere near 2016-17ish) we would have a modern, smooth running RS4 now. But no, they choose to be the meme dog in the burning house saying "this is fine".
The harsh reality is that unlike OSRS, RS3 did not age well. The game is so outdated on nearly all fronts, that it is unsalvageable for the new generation of gamers, little to no new blood enters the game, while the veteran players who make up the overwhelming majority of RS3 player slowly but surely shrink as the years creep by.This is what I call a 'zombie' game at this state, and these games never truly 'die', they just exist in a near-perpetual state of undead. It may be many years, if not decades when RS3 truly dies.
So my advice for Jamflex is the same: Keep supporting RS3 while working on RS4, and when it is out, put RS3 on life support or leave it with a skeleton crew. There is no future for RS3.

I've played this game for the better part of my life. Iirc my account is now about 18 years old. My character could be considered an adult. I've gained billions of xp across many accounts, made for fun or challenge. At one point I owned completionist cape and master quest cape, some of the grindiest achievements in the game. I've been an active part of the community, as well as multiple sub-communities such as ironmen, hcim, skillers, fashionscapers, and at one point also pvmers.
I've seen this game evolve. I've given it chance after chance, always trying to see the bright side, always trying to trust Jagex to take care of my childhood fav. In the past few years, the mtx, the grindy playstyle, and modern 'if I can't afk it, I don't want it' mindset, it being more and more rare to do random things and see other players in random locations, and CONNECT with them, have slowly eaten away any and all desire to play the game. FSW was a breath of fresh air, but was handled so poorly that it never returned.
I've taken breaks and even 'quit' a few times, but this year, I strongly believe, was my final year on RS3, and maybe all of RS. Sad to say that I probably will never return, no matter what they do, other than to perhaps just chat for a day and fuck around.

I remember when OSRS came out and I didn't switch over because I didn't want to start over. Fast forward a few years and I started noticing how OSRS was doing and it made me want to try it out, even if I had to start over and it was awesome! People will hessitate starting over, but if done right it can 100% be the right choice and work for the better!
Even so, there is a LOT that would have to be done, also behind the curtains, to make RS3 a compelling modern MMO, mechanically speaking. It is FAR from a uniform game in style, many systems are very dated and it's such a spaghetti-fied game that it often times seems like it will collapse under its own weight. For example, you are wondering why RS3 allows for construction training outside of POH? It's because they've mentioned on live streams that reworking the POH and construction as a skill would be a project that would take a dedicated dev team upwards of 3 years to complete from inventarising all the systems that tie into it up until release. RS3 has potential, but I am not sure it is within the bounds of reason for a company with a profit motive to make the necessary steps to revive it.

Hi, thank you for sharing & lending your voice to the RS3 community. You made a lot of great points about the game that I agree with especially when it comes to MTX. However, I would like to give my own perspective as a RS3 player myself that has played Runescape for almost 19 years now. To get straight to the point, TH is a plague to the game and I think it needs to be removed because of its lootbox/gambling reasons.
Just to give my perspective what type of player I am. When I started Runescape, I never once cared about the leaderboards because whoever started the game first or has more time to play will imo always have the advantage no matter what. I paid 0 attention to it, the value of it don't matter because it was always just about who has more time or started before me. I did quit just before the release of EOC(I had no idea it was even planned or existed) because the RS2 got extremely boring. Then RS3 came with cosmetics, MTX, the ability bar, lots of drastic changes. All of it was overwhelming at first but eventually I found enjoyment in the game. Especially the cosmetics.
With this out the of the way, I want to touch on my own experiences with Treasure Hunter. Since its existence all the way until late 2022, the only thing I did with it is use my daily 1-3 keys that I get for free. Then Jagex started adding cosmetic overrides to them which caused me to engage in Treasure Hunter more and more in late 2022. I relied on using ingame GP to buy bonds or using oddments for keys and started doing the saving keys method in order to save for their next predatory FOMO cosmetic promo. As a fashionscaper, this is when I felt TH was at its worst state than it ever has been. It only slow down a tiny bit after the reveal of the roadmap this year. My biggest issue with this is the gambling/lootbox shenanigans. It felt like I was playing those Korean MMO with atrocious RNG rates. 40% to get a star instead of an outfit piece is very annoying. My opinion on what they can do at least is, delete TH, spend more time making cosmetics and sell them for runecoins in the Marketplace/Solomon's Store.
With my opinion on MTX stated, I would like to touch on some of the points you have made.
--> Sense of accomplishment of XP devalued by MTX
Now granted I never had valued xp even before MTX, my opinion is going to be skewed here. I think the concept of sense of accomplishment XP is overvalued.
Let's say $$ is removed then. If I was to visit an old MMO game where I spent months grinding to get level 30. Then in the future due to power creep, change, and state of the game, you can get to level 30 in 20 minutes now. Time already devalues XP IMO and Runescape is no exception to this. Whether that be wasting too much time(I've got responsibilities now, I don't see anything interesting about clicking the same thing again to gain xp) or the rates are too high. Actually given my state on TH, my levels were done more from afking too hard from one click skilling than anything TH has offered me. Either way, I don't level up for others, I do it for myself and that has more value than anything else. Even if MTX didn't exist in a perfect world, I could care less that you got 200M this way or that because again.. TIME. Bringing me to the next thing I will bring up.
-> POH being useless because people just bankstand now for better xp rates
RS3 is vastly different on how useful POH is compared to OSRS. Lodestones, run energy being less of a problem, faster xp rates to get teleport spells all contribute to this factor.
If MTX is removed, POH would still be dead for construction XP. Construction is now more tied to what we now call Fort Forinthry which has more uses than POH as it provides benefits to enhance skilling's QOL. Construction from what I heard is mostly trained at the fort rather than breaking the same chair to build again. Only notable use for POH is Aquarium, statue, and repairing items.
Do I wish POH had a more use? I wish.. it looked better and less clunky to work with. I would love a homestead replacing POH entirely rather than working on old spaghetti code.
    --> Bankstanding for XP Rates
POH example out of the way, portables are extremely good because the alternatives suck. Either they make it so you can earn it ingame or add something alternative that doesn't suck. Most people will go for best xp rates or resource saving methods whenever they can. Disassociate MTX with this and you'd probably get people bankstanding at the same portable if portables were earnable without MTX. This is more of the nature of the game/side effect.
    --> MTX, PAY 2 WIN
Even let's say you buy all your XP and max out, it's only going to get you so far. I already mentioned XP being devalued feels more like time than MTX. Unlike certain mobile korean mmo games, no matter how much you spend, you aren't having infinite incremental stat boosts. You aren't going to be stronger than player has the same gear. MTX can't buy collection logs, quest, comp cape, speedrun times, kill times, your actual skill in the game such as PVM(not levels). The game feels more like Pay to Skip than Pay to Win when it comes to the XP part.
    --> Fresh start NO MTX
TBH, the damage is already done. It's a very risky thing to do. What you're doing is throwing away all the accomplishments not done by MTX of all the players that have worked their way there without any MTX? There's also the limited cosmetics people have unlocked since the very beginning of the game. You anger the existing players for potential new players/returning players? Except.. there's also a big problem. The new player experience with the terrible starting UI and being overwhelmed by too many things. Oh, slap MTX on top of it too. I logged into my very old pure str pvping account, and even as a Veteran player, my own UI still confused me.
I tried to get back into some old MMOs but being overwhelmed by so many popups does way more damage. If this happens, I will not play it, I do not wish to spend time rebuilding from scratch because time is valuable resource. I don't think it will save the game if the starting player experience remains the way it is. It's a 20+ year old game now, there isn't really a clear cut solution to this. If anything, the best way is to delete TH and focus more on cosmetics will at least be a good starting point. If they want to bring new players, they need to solve some of the problems with the new player experience. How will they do it? I don't know..
These all the critical points I wanted to touch on that you mentioned. Again, thank you very much for sharing your thoughts on the surveys from the outside POV. I really wanted to add how they all come together as a RS3 player.

I don't know what they could possibly do with POH to make it more useful, everything it could've used is already on seperate parts of the game, they could use the POH as a social part of the game, where people just show off things they've done with statues and stuff, though socializing in Runescape and MMOs in this day and age is dead anyways, so that's never going to happen.

Honestly, RS3 has some great content. The progression is fun, stories are good, and it's different enough from OSRS that it's totally worth trying. New player experience sucks. MTX sucks. Both of those things just kills so much of the game, that most main players probably don't even know half the content exists, because you can just Protean/lamp/bonus xp without interacting with any skills. I've been playing an RS3 ironman for like, 2-3 years now. I don't play all the time. But I keep coming back to it. I've got like 13 99s, and each one felt great to achieve. You can do bossing and dungeoneering with other irons, so some of the social aspects are still there and you can do things with your friends unlike OSRS irons. Necro has been a fun skill to level and was a great addition to get new people into the action bar system and how an MMO class would work, building up resources and spending them on strong abilities. Archaeology might be one of the best RS skills ever developed, with a meaningful gathering skill that also has completionist aspects to it, that also link into cool and expansive lore for the rest of the game. It's such a shame you can't experience the fun parts of the game just because you have access to spending real world money to skip it all.

The makeover mage has changed too. There are no “female” or “male” bodytypes anymore. Its a small change that doesnt bother anyone on a daily basis but it shows what the focus is of the mods, and they are honest to god reverse incels or something.
There are wings that you wear and when you do, you will say “your gender matters” randomly.
There are many many lgbt cosmetic items.
Again, we don’t have anything like that either.
The landscape has changed and it attracts people that value the lgbtq over anything, which I think is ridiculous and a game should be inclusive, and by doing this its actually the opposite, it becomes the focus of the game in certain ways.
There is more but I have said enough. I hope you can read my thoughts that I put here without looking at me as a hateful person, bc I am not. I honest to god don’t care what someone does in their free time, i don’t mind seeing it in the slightest either. This is a seperate matter and Jagex is ruined for it, for me.

EDIT: I should add for context, I am 36 years old, I don't have the time or really, the years to do this all over again at this point.
The main problems I have with a reset button option is I have spent literal decades doing stuff in this game, and if I have to do it all over again, I won't.
I don't want to spend countless hours collecting resources I already collected or doing long and difficult quests I've already completed. I also have stuff I'm afraid won't move over like cosmetic items, or for example, the capes that represent how long I've been playing or my Classic Runescape cape (a cape given to you if you logged into the original version of Runescape) or the old holiday items I got for being there all those years ago.
I'm not interested in slowly grinding out skills again. That doesn't mean I want to buy my way back to 99's it just means I won't participate ever again.
Even if they include a legacy RS3 server, why would I continue to play? That version will most likely never receive another update and slowly wither away anyway.
At that point, the game might as well be dead to me.
If it was a softer reset, sure, I could deal with that. Kinda like the RS1 to RS2 transition, or if my skills HAVE to reset, then I would want the exp rates to be better, and I could just claim rewards from all the quests I've previously done instantly when logging in.
But if I lost everything? Nah, I'm good. I don't want to invest another 20 years on and off.
All that being said. This was a wonderful video. I love your content and keep up the good work.

@@Ghoulgran I'm in a similar situation to the original commenter. My account is closing in on 20 years old. I have spent thousands of hours working on my character in game. I've completed every quest, worked hard to get bis armor sets and even though I am in no means one of the top players I have sunk an enormous amount of work into my account. While I have engaged with mtx systems at times in a limited capacity at least 2.3b of my nearly 3.1b xp has been obtained through raw gameplay. Most of my "mtx" xp has been through daily keys and proteans or dummies earned through them. But I also know what it's like to grind because I played for years before squeal of fortune (proto-TH) was released. I don't have the time to grind it out like I did when I was 12. If I was forced to reset I just wouldn't play anymore. I would absolutely port over my character to a new server where mtx was no longer a thing outside of cosmetics. But starting over? Replaying over 300 quests I've already done? I know I wont do it because I started an alt, have all the skills above 80 by using it as a processing jockey for things like stone spirits I get on my main or to produce extremes to make overloads while working on 120 all (5 skills to go) and I cant progress it much further because I just have no interest in replaying content I've done before. I also know people who are closing in on 5.8b xp and have never spent a dime on TH. Do they deserve to have their work wiped out because some people need external validation for their accomplishments? Because that's what people mean when they say "my accomplishments feel like they don't mean anything because somebody else just bought it."
If jagex wants to remove pay to win xp, by all means. Take all my proteans and bxp and dummies and cores. If jagex nukes my account progress because some people are insecure then I'm just going to quit. I have other games that I spend time in as well. I continue to play RS3 because it's my original character with so much history and so many memories, and expecting people to just accept having all of that invalidated so that you can feel special because some random person is impressed by you in the video game is incredibly selfish.

I have used treasure hunter but not paid any real money (other than for membership) for anything. I don’t mind the bonus XP and the skilling helping things but I’m still tying to play the game “as intended” and I feel like MTX being removed wouldn’t really change how I play. I just wish I had more people to play with at my skill level (~1,300) and that there was the community of OSRS. the problem with these surveys is a thing called survivor's bias:
the people they're being sent to are people who are STILL playing the game despite the fact that the mtx is so predatory. the result of it is going to be leaning more towards favoring the transactions than would be the case in a larger sample size and if you were going to be accurate you would want to include the people who also QUIT the game because of them
in world war 2 the planes were coming back covered in holes so someone suggested that because of the holes being confined to certain areas of the planes they should add more armour to those specific areas when in fact its the opposite because the planes being shot down were the ones being hit where the ones returning were not.

I've also never purchased any MTX or cosmetics, at most redeeming a few bonds over many thousands of hours. I've long hoped for a nuclear option to restart the server with no P2W MTX, and a more subtle implementation of the cosmetics for those who use it. I hope they take it, since even as a high level veteran of 07' with a maxed OSRS character, I genuinely enjoy RS3 more than OSRS, but its systems and market kill it for me. Also, by god is it convoluted. If they can press the nuclear option and just remove the "fluff" content to clear up so visual space in the world, I'll be back again.

    • @A6by

It also results in more accurate feedback for Jagex to use, though, if their goal is to help their existing players. Sure, a more varied sample group would undoubtedly be more critical of MTX, which is a good thing because MTX is bad, but it would also largely not understand the balance of RS3 and what tradeoffs should and shouldn't be made to stop a total collapse. If they just removed MTX overnight, for example, and changed nothing to compensate, there would be chaos, and RS3 vets better understand this, in theory.

  • @ArramzyChaos
    @ArramzyChaos Месяц назад +4

I'm glad you made this video. I used to play RS back in the day like many of us, stopped playing when the first predatory micro-transactions were introduced as I was a teenager with no money and my parents didn't pay for my membership either, there was just better value for money out there and I had to make choices where I would spend it.
Later I played OSRS because of nostalgia, I tried RS3 but my old account I had invested in had all sorts of mechanics unlocked that hadn't been introduced to me gradually (because I didn't play when the updates happened) it was overwhelming and the MTX were even worse, so I didn't stick around. I played a couple of OSRS HCIM runs, some HCIM F2P speedruns (routing all the F2P quests in such a way, with multiquesting etc. to beat them as fast as possible) played non ironman too for a bit but it felt weird to just do so much of questing and skilling through the GE, had some fun with GIM too.
But in the end this game is just a medieval cookie clicker, click and the number goes up. Personally I would like a game with more mechanics and more depth to the combat. Granted part of this is because I need to take medication that slows my reaction speed, so late game bosses that require prayer flicking and avoiding certain tiles etc. are just not for me. Problem is clicking at the right place at the right time is really all that OSRS can do to make fights engaging (you talked in another video about stuff like taunting bosses becoming a thing and that would absolutely change the game for me in a good way). But yeah unlike probably most of your viewers I also quit OSRS. Theoretically RS3 would play a lot nicer with my medication with its keybinds, automatic abilities etc. but that wasn't an option in the current state of the game.
Runescape is a game I love, I enjoy the lore and I have actually off and on engaged with it for the majority of my life now (which feels crazy to say) I am invested in its world and its lore. If RS3 gets a pay to win mtx free reset I will almost certainly give it a go.

I started playing RS3 because of your By Release series because I was interested in where the story of RS3 goes. Doing the quests means I get a lot of keys, but the fact that it's so insistent in giving what is essentially free xp sours the gameplay so much. IMO, if they were to remove the direct XP items from it (Lamps, stars, Proteans, skilling packs, training dummies) it'd be more paletable. I think having special items you can get through them is neat, especially stuff like the cosmetics and bank note papers where it's a special convenience and may save trips, but doesn't have you not doing skills.
Hell, even earning clue scrolls from it would be fine.
EDIT: Also, having Mods that were a larger part of the community, or even having a community would be a big boon to RS3. I see OSRS mods always interacting with the community and then never see RS3 mods do anything like that.

Ultimately what pushed me away from RS3 is what pushed me away from Runescape altogether; I just honestly could not justify the grind of the game anymore. I have at least a decades worth of nostalgia for the game and love to keep up with it to see what all is added to each game, but being an adult now with responsibilities and limited free time I just looked at myself clicking on a rock for hours while listening to podcasts and figured I would rather spend my time elsewhere. We are in a fantastic era of modern gaming with some fairly great AAA as well as indie titles coming out almost constantly, and I always wonder if the gameplay loop of Runescape as a whole is actually what is preventing more people from joining moreso than anything else.

As someone who has played since 2009, I have stuck with rs3 through and through. Only now after all these years am I finally able to commit myself enough to my account to get max... just max and not 120s. I don't understand 120s and think that's way too much. I cherish my 99s because i remember when they were a big deal. I try to play osrs, but there is a strange click in my brain that doesn't work the same way it does when I play rs3. I personally don't like the idea of starting all over because I DID put all the time and effort into normally grinding my skills. I'm not an ironman, but I struggle to merchant, I struggle to pvm, and the things i like most in the game are the quests and the laid back skilling that doesn't take more than 2% of your brain to do (I'm looking at you invention you demon of a skill) I want RS3 to succeed, I will still play this game if MTX gets taken off. I will still grind my skills as I do normally, and I will quest happily because thats why I'm still here.
Here's my hot take- put all those xp rewards and cosmetics back into minigames to motivate people to play castlewars, soul wars, fist of guthix again because they are empty. Pest control is one of my favorite minigames but it could be so much fun if it had a reason to play for the players. The only thing most players do is either skill, or boss because thats how you can meet the demand of anything. If you want to boss you have to have money, and to have money you have to boss... its kind of toxic. I respect skillers a lot in this game, especially if they are hardcore ironmen which I see a lot of in fort fortinthry.
The greatest thing I saw was a hardcore ironman with a fire cape... who was level 3. That made me smile because that seems so hard to me, basically impossible. But it was done. There is a chance for this game, but I'm not going to restart because I'm too attached to this character I have made and carried with since I was in middle school.

As an ex RS3 player a full reboot would be the only thing that would get me to play again. I did partake in the problem by utilising the squeal of fortune to finish off maxing my main account (skills that i did not care for). But doing so made it all feel so pointless. I did create an ironman account following this to make the achievements feel more deserved, but even then, the game just felt empty and pointless.
I was very tempted to create another character for the fresh start world, but decided against it knowing it would ultimately be joining into the main game and would once again feel pointless.

This is a very refreshing video. I played runescape back in the day, then created an OSRS account around 2016 and played it for a while, before eventually creating a new ironman account on RS3. I think OSRS had a lot of nostalgia but over-corrected - I think polling everything is a mistake that prevents good ideas from entering the game. The most fun I had playing OSRS was during leagues, and when I realized I could get similar experiences just playing RS3, I didn't really feel the OSRS vibe anymore. So I made my RS3 ironman and have been having tons of fun. And that fun is due in part to the ironman game mode, and in part due to the lack of MTX. I have bought a few cosmetics because I am an adult and can afford to spend money on something if I want to, and I wanted to buy some cosmetics, but I certainly didn't need to do that and the game would have been fine without.
Overall, I think RS3 has a far better story and gameplay than OSRS and would have huge potential in a fresh start/RS4 setting. Would I make a new account and abandon my current account? Probably, but I am not sure. As an ironman account, it would probably be the same gameplay, but I would want to support where the game is going. Yeah it would suck having to redo the grinds I have already done, but I want the game to succeed because at the end of the day, it is the game I want to play. In the mean-time, I encourage OSRS players to give an ironman account a try, you might be pleasantly surprised. I think ironman RS3 is peak runescape right now.

I've tried playing OSRS so many times and I never last longer than a week. I've tried rs3 ironmen and they never get far. The point is that I'm attached to the the character I've made and built almost 20 years ago and what I've done along the way. I just can't get myself to care about a fresh start. This entire situation just hurts because even if there's some perma fresh start and it gains traction, those of us who don't want to leave these characters we put so much time into will just have to deal with the population of our side of RS3's further dwindling population. Just trying to conceptualize how to dig out of the hole RS3's dug itself makes me feel like I'll be one of those MMO players without a home game sooner than I thought.

    • @Capopoi
      @Capopoi Месяц назад +2

@@eireyouok101 There would have to be drastic changes to the content of the game to actually bring people in, old and new. RS3 devs have sometimes taken advantage of the fact that they have a playerbase that is more receptive to fundamentally changing core game mechanics and have found success (skill reworks like mining/smithing/farming, new skills like invention/arch, shaking up combat with necro, making wildy pvp completely opt-in). The big problem is that the game, unlike OSRS, doesn't have the same cohesive world "feel" for lack of a better word. I imagine this is why OSRS makes gains in the new player department and RS3 does not. RS3 devs can make new content with this "feel", but most of that content is for mid to late game players aside from some of those core skill gameplay changes that they've implemented.
Both RS versions are very much non-stop exercises of self-direction, but there is so much that they can do to tighten up the early RS3 ride that would both give people a taste of what the game is later on and a sort of direction for them to go in. Ideally, the f2p experience should be that design space. Easiest changes would be greater access to the world, increasing the f2p level limit for members skills to more than 5, and getting more abilities unlocked earlier to get familiarity with main triangle combat growing quicker.
Beyond that they have to do a ton of re-evaluation of so much of the either miserable (the EXHAUSTIVE list of dailies+weeklies+monthlies, etc); worthless (minigames like vinesweeper, ancient skilling methods, etc); inconsistent (graphical oddities in old quests, areas, and npcs); or just outright dead and useless content after getting certain rewards (shattered worlds, livid farm + mta, etc). I know it's a ton to ask for since OSRS started as only a small slice of Runescape's history and therefore could get into their stride quicker, but it's a LOT easier to tell when something in RS3 is really badly dated when compared to OSRS. For a new player I imagine it's more detrimental to the experience and much harder to ignore those things compared to OSRS. They've shown talent in worldbuilding time and time again through quests though, so I have some faith that they could do great work if they were to focus on that.

For me the fun part of RS3 isnt grinding a skill or getting super good at a single method for hours on end. I dont want to spend days leveling a skill in a method that takes my full attention and is super repetitive. At least with AFK skilling you can do it on a second monitor at work, then get back to the fun stuff once the grind is over with.
The fun part of RS3 are the quests, the achievements, the collections, the things that force you to go to every area of the map and gain understanding of runescape lore. I dont care about my skill level as much as I do my achievement count. If I have to spend days leveling in order to do a single quest, I am not going to have as much fun, I just dont have the time for that. See, Fresh Start worlds would be great for this. People that like the game how it is can play that, and people that want to value their skilling achievements/other achievements that are killed through TH could play the Fresh Start worlds.
I think one of my favorite things about when I played late Runescape 2 and early Runescape 3 was the afk skilling. I loved feeling like I achieved something, so after a long day of work/school I'd come home, turn on a show and afk runespan or something. Get a ton of runecrafting levels. Feel like I achieved something. It's why I've been loving OSRS, because my brain hates "lazing around." Wasting time! Don't take a nap, you could be doing something! So that TV show I've been wanting to watch? That's a waste of time. However, if I afk something in a game I'm going to invest time into, I feel like I'm "allowed" to waste that time because my enjoyment later will be better. Lamps don't offer this, since they're immediate, and a lot of OSRS's gameplay is tick manipulation.
I'd love to AFK Runespan again. See the web of potential achievements branch out once more. "If I do a and b, then x and y are easier later because of z. So if I do a and b first, then x and y, then I'll have.. 80 agility, 80 construction, 75 runecrafting." Yada yada.

When EoC hit, I had just gotten 99 slayer on my account. I was so happy! It was like 3 weeks before EoC dropped. When EoC dropped, enemies that used to take 2 minutes to kill took 20 seconds to kill, and slayer exp was 10x what it was before PER kill. My 99 slayer that I worked hard for the hard way was essentially turned into a couple month grind. On another note, I didn't like training Thieving. It was boring. At one point, I went from 70 to 99 thieving in 2 hours from spins that I'd accumulated during one of their "burning lamp" events. I gave up on the game shortly after.
I genuinely believe that without microtransactions and with a little bit of care and balancing on exp rates like osrs does with every release, RS3 could be fun. It's different. I liked the corruption shot ability that spread across and killed a bunch of stuff. I didn't mind the combat. They gave special attacks back, which made some aspects of the game fun again, and made some weapons and armor feel unique again instead of "I made it to 90 so I can never use SGS again." But what do you do from here? The game's broken. Achievements are nothing. Even if they fixed everything, new players would just have a harder time catching up and their achievements will still mean nothing. Fresh start worlds would be nice, but who would play on them? The people that don't want to abandon their maxed RS3 characters? Or the people already harassing RS3 for its problems? I think it's the best solution, just to make things feel impactful again, but it could kill current RS3 worlds even more and make the players that still play even more demoralized to play.

33:14 coming from someone that started out as an rs3 player, I completely agree treasure hunter doesn't even begin to cover most of my problems with the game. I absolutely loved the combat system between 2014-2019. Not many crucial changes were made over that time period, other than introducing new abilities that were unlockable via codex drops from certain bosses. Then 2020 came...and oh boy, they flipped everything upside down. New overpowered summoning familiar. New passive combat buffs just because they wanted people to engage with the new skill archaeology. And worst of all...the essence of finality, a new best-in slot amulet for PvM that is so utterly broken that it changed how every combat style was used. From there on out, it's as if every time they introduce a new weapon or ability codex, it's clear that they've invested no time in to balancing it. It's either so shit that you'd be stupid to buy it/grind it out as an iron, or it's so stupidly strong that you start asking yourself "why did they think this was a good idea?" You then get used to your combat kit for a while and they decide over a year after it's been out to just arbitrarily nerf/buff it.
But worst of all is the fact that you actually just deal too much damage now. From when I last played in September 2023, there's about three bosses in the game where you actually cannot brute force skipping mechanics sheerly through DPS. I just cannot find bossing fun on there anymore when everything dies so fast from DPS, knowing how nuanced the combat system once was when you needed to actually play around mechanics. Gameplay progress and especially PvM encounters are a lot slower in OSRS compared to rs3, but to an extent I actually enjoy the fact that mechanics are a lot more meaningful. The equivalent would be like, say I'm using a tbow on olm's final phase and I've got no food, and I just keep hitting 0's-10's. It's possible for me to still finish the kill in spite of the bad rng by doing 1:0 and dodging the falling crystals. If I had to equivocate that to rs3, it'd be like having a tbow on olm's final phase, but you have 100% accuracy, and your damage range is 40-80. You can still kill it just as fast, but even with bad luck you will kill it so fast it's like you can do whatever the hell you want and it won't matter.

The question around pricing that you commented on being weird actually IS weird. That question is called a "Van Westendrop price model" question. It's built to work out how much to charge for a NEW product where you have no idea of the product's benefits and therefore the price acts as a signal of quality (e.g. if you see a new brand of beans you've never seen in the store before, all you know is that they're $0.27, you assume they're absolutely not premium).
Given this is an established product, they really should have used a "Gabor Granger pricing model" question which keeps cranking up the price (since you already know what value you get from the service) and watches the drop-off of participants agreeing that they'd be willing to pay that for the service they're currently receiving.

They'd have to really make an incentive for long term players to join a new fresh start world.
I agree that it would be pretty awesome, as a lot of people are kinda aiming at that view.
There's a reason why I don't play OSRS, I already spent a tentative amount of time as a child on this game doing the things
you would do in OSRS. Hackin' away at yew trees for hours as a kid. I can't see myself doing that again, starting over.
I'm really just fearful that I'd lose my long standing account's achievements. They're my own gain, and I feel accomplished.

Absolutely could not agree more. If they really want to take a shot at saving RS3 you need to get rid of P2W and xp boost COMPLETELY and start new servers. I actually enjoyed playing RS3 as an ironman, but it just felt so demoralizing. You also seriously kill any type of community with the xp stations. Yes, there are dozens if not hundreds of people using them, but none of them are actually paying attention to the game. I am not completely against the idea of cosmetic MTX, but they need to be high quality and high effort, not the trash "oh look if you give me money you can look like an OSRS player" bullshit. However, they also need to include cosmetics that can only be gotten through accomplishment and have it be just as high effort. I don't know if it would be enough to save RS3, but if they combined this idea with community polling for RS3 as they do with OSRS, they could have a really strong reboot on their hands.

20+Y old account here - just returned. Gotta admit that when I logged on after roughly 10 years, I wasn't expecting to right click and see red all around me.
I'm 99 in melee, constitution, defence, ranged, magic and prayer... And I remember having had to sacrifice a santa hat for that 99 prayer. I no longer have any rares, but that's how costly 99 prayer was. I can hardly fathom that everyone around me could have made the same sacrifices o_O.
As a returning player, what point is there really to skill when high skill is the norm? Where's the fun in helping newbies when there's none? Where's the sense of community when any issue can be solved with a 6€ bond purchase?
Way back then, Runescape felt, at least to me, very "isolated" - you had to make a few friends to know what anything was about, and if you ran into issues - having someone who cared enough to hand some precious loot that they will miss was a big part of the game, no gravestone, no safety anywhere aside from towns - reliance on each other was a thing (hence the scams). I remember full well people TPing into fal', poisoned begging for food and everyone was more than happy to help (except when poisoned food was involved)
It felt small, familiar yet dangerous, full of the best and worst in humanity -- nothing was flashy, no powercreep, it was just nice and "mysterious".
To me, everything started going wrong after loot overcame crafting smithing etc... The economy worked because there was no GE and dying usually meant losing your stuff, so there had both demand and supply.
Gravestones + GE + Looted Weapons meant that people were far less likely to die, that if they died they could usually recover their stuff and if they ever needed to they could directly buy from bots or farmers without establishing any contact with a fellow human. Self reliance and small "shops" were a thing of the past.
It opened many new opportunities, sure, and change isn't always bad - but lets face it this game is insanely bloated (like ... I'm pretty sure 90% of the VRAM is put towards rendering bs). You can almost smell the "we gotta pad that revenue for the fiscal year" of years past, layer by layer. There's no identity, why a my little pony pet? Why wings? Right next to edgelord gear --- oil and water, they don't mix and now you can't add that olive oil to your salad or drink that water for its a mess.
I'm going to play again because nostalgia, but I'm fully aware that this is no longer my childhood game - along side eve online ...
EDIT: just gotta put that theory I've always had out there: ever since the release of GE I couldn't shake off the feeling that it was mostly a means for jagex to keep control of the values of their top items, solely to be able to then control the market as the value of GP is relative TO these items. Looks like even as a teenager I was very against the idea of manipulation --- the nostalgia :p

Prefacing this with that I'm not disagreeing with your view on this, I fucking hate MTX as a concept and would much rather just pay a higher monthly sub, but...
The problem with a big reset is the other thousands of hours worth of accomplishments that people have gone through that aren't related to MTX. Collection logs, Completionist capes etc, some of the grinds here are immensely long and have taken years to do. To me it's a case of Remove TH, and it's just gone, and people then have to deal with it and go back to other skilling methods for XP gains. Lets face it, the whales who spam keys and max out probably don't/wont' play anymore as they have no real connection to their account since it's just MTX'ed (like with your FSW account where you don't want to play it) the people who abused TH would just die off leaving people who actually want to play the game for what it is.
The argument of devaluing accomplishments by leaving the gained xp from TH in there isn't really there imo, since you would devalue a heck of a lot more dedicated players by wiping the other non MTX related achievements from them if you were to hit a big reset button. This is coming from someone who has gone through trimmed completionism, has 99% of the achievements in game done, is working on the Golden reaper title (all boss collection logs) and has a fair number of clues under his belt too. Having that taken away would be soul destroying and I certainly wouldn't play RS again if it were to happen. I tried OSRS when it launched and have popped on to leagues a couple of times but starting over is just not an option for me, I've done all the stuff before, I don't want to spend thousands of hours grinding it again.
Having another split in the RS community wouldn't go well either. RS3 needs to be kept as 1 or it will just die, it can't split again like it did with OSRS as there would be the inevitable "oh you pay that version....eww" fights that still to this day go on between RS3 and OSRS communities.

    • @Teakeh
      @Teakeh Месяц назад +7

Agreed 100%. The best option is to remove progress MTX (cosmetics would still be fine I guess) but then keep everything as is, no reset on anything. Just continue on from there with no TH.

@@knitnonymous You do you, but the argument “Well i know people that do this so…” is just your personal experience and doesnt show that rs3 is dead or not.
Also, I never said rs3 is dead. It just has a clear lifespan the way its going now. Daily there are about 4k people online. Ultima Online Outlands has more players than that and its a private server of a even older game.
Rs3 isnt dead right now, but its not thriving. Its not looking like it will either. Your experience can be fine but that literally doesnt change anything.
I play old games nobody thinks of, and even there I have regular new players. This doesnt say anything as most will leave quick, and the ones that stay just replace others that have their break-period at that time or have quit completely. So ofcourse a game thats called Runescape, the name that has always been in the conversation of “best mmorpg of all time”, will get people to try it out every day atleast a couple. Its not about that, and its a rather weird argument to have.

  • @0ctoburr

As someone that plays both, I think the notion of RS3 being bad because "previous players that haven't logged in for years having their achievements diminished because 120 is the new 99" is a bad argument. You stopped playing for years, and the game grew. There was powercreep, xp creep, and actual expansions to skills. Your account is always more impressive for having done something earlier when the game was harder, but wishing your 99s from 2012 were still peak gaming is not the way.
That said, the FSW accounts should not have ported to the main game, and MTX is always poison, but to sum it up: The game doesn't owe it to the world to stay the same. They made us a version for that.

Having it go from that, to being able to skip the grind completely by bankstanding, and just spinning some wheel, neglects all of that and makes the grind back then pointless. No player from that era will ever return, because their efforts are now meaningless.

First of all, thank you for putting attention on this topic. I've consistently played RS3 for the past couple years and I want nothing but what is best for this game. I can't underestimate how much of an impact MTX has on experience directly or indirectly and that's why I think I would be so excited for a fresh start version of RS3. Over the past couple years, I have not spent money on TH keys but I have premier membership and can get upwards of 8 keys a day through premier membership and dailies. I have just over 4 billion total experience and I have a few skills that are 150m-200m that I have not interacted with since 99 outside of lamps/stars and protean items. The main game is tainted by years and years and years of experience inflation. A full fresh start reset server would be amazing. It's going to be hard and there will always be players who are going to be upset, not make the transition, or quit outright. For the long term health of the game, I think this is the best solution.

Having realized that I was logging on to just gamble GP, I had to quit... which led me to the creation of my ironman on OSRS. I only wish I started playing OSRS sooner.

I got nothing against there being a fresh start world option for those inclined, but nuking other peoples time and effort at the same time would be a terrible idea. I never paid any real life money on RS, not for keys, not for bonds, not even for members. You can absolutely simply enjoy playing the game as a main account, just ignore the microtransactions, and simply don’t care about others getting xp much faster through paying. If you play for your own amusement and not other people’s gratification, you know how you played it, and you can feel accomplished about what you’ve achieved.
Also, RS3 is way less focused on skilling than OSRS is. There is a lot more to do, things to achieve, mechanics to learn and master. It’s a very different game to OSRS, and accomplishment comes from other thungs than in OSRS.

Even ironscape is easyscape on rs3 lmao. zero challenge except chasing the rng. gim = mini g.e for irons.

I quit the game because of the addition of chaotic weaponry, and I felt that Dungeoneering was SUCH a drag to do. What, exactly, did you find enjoyable about it? I'm honestly asking

the only way to enjoy rs3 is as a ironman.

Which is dumb, o prefer a main account. Like J1mmy said, being rocked to play a specific way to avoid the mtx is not a good solution

@@erickchristensen746 It really is a shame, but I feel like MTX is only scratching the surface when it comes to the problems that RS3 has. We could talk about the issues for hours if we're honest i think

Switched from RS3 to OSRS. Quit when i was a Master Trimmed Completionist. The game went in a direction that i really disliked after the Elder God Wars. The pile up from the HeroPass, Fort Forinthry and Necromancy tipped me over. played as a main and sporadically bought keys if there was a OP promo.
It feels pretty shitty ill probably never return to my 'favorite game'
At Least OSRS is filling that void well!
