yes agree, he is one of the japaese prodigies but due to the gambling issue with Kento Momota is the reason why he is forbidden to compete internationally
Tago had one of the craziest runs in all England 2010, beating all the Chinese seeded players then losing narrowly to LCW. He definitely put Japan on the map before momota became the next big thing
really enjoyed watching Tago play in the past, he seems to have a good sense of humor and never truly got angry. He seemed to treat momota like a little brother back then as well.
It's very efficient. I guess, the only reason why Tago retired early was that his body was not designed for this sports. But he is truly a Champion of the Sports.
More like he was forced to retire because he got banned from all badminton activities after being caught gambling alongside Momota. Momota got 2 years ban, so he made a return in 2017. Tago got his ban lifted recently, but by then, he has already passed the age where he could compete. He does do some coaching and has a fairly successful RUclips channel.
Overall it seems more that he lacked the necessary discipline. Gambled, then got very overweight - reminds me of other kids that focus super strongly on one thing their entire adolescence, only to go off the rails once they become adults and move into different circumstances (often away from the parents who pressured them). Not sure if the success went to his head, if he lost motivation because he couldn't quite get to his mother's level of success or if he was the same way all the way, just unnoticed.... He also reminds me of Koo Kien Keat in some regard - very talented, but didn't keep up the discipline and was caught lacking physically in the latter stages of his career.
Wtf am i Reading .... Not designed for this sports in what regards ?? He retired only to save Momota because he went to a casino hold by yakuza wich is against japanese's general moral. it allows to save Momota ( who was his "student" ) . Its mostly thanks to him we got Momota prime , not only because of his taking all responsabilites for this yakuza affair, but for training-pushing Momota's during all those years in japan's fed. He is in top5 most gifted technical players, I would say its a more accomplished Loh kean yew. He beats Ld or Lcw in their prime, specially the semi final in French open in 2013 was one my favourite matchs to watch. ( vs LCW) . Momota had a 1 year ban, while tago got permantly banned from japan's fed. People saying he isnt athletic like other top players just because he doesnt look ripped... Loook at his Smash, extremly powerfull and some very deceptive.
He has a YT channel were he teaches badminton. At 50yrs old, I am still able to compete vs much much younger players by emphasizing control over anything. Lots of high lifts and choosing when to change pace and smashing only to finish points. His playstyle is what we call an old man's game but it is very effective. Momota took this to another level by combining high lifts with slices/drops and choosing only to attack when absolutely needed but yes it started with Tago. Moving an opponent around, dictating tempo while preserving stamina are some of the joys of singles badminton. Young players are better off emulating players like Momota and Tago over LZJ and Ginting. Control/Placement vs Speed/Power.
Tago was a badminton genius who had the technicality and strategy of a great champion, he kind of reminds me of a less athletic Taufik. However, he enjoyed his comforts too much and never realized his true potential.
Yeah I felt the same. He seemed to actually emulate Taufik on purpose (similar racket setup, also going for very tight strings, playing the backhand a lot,...). Just like Taufik, he was either not as gifted athletically or didn't train as optimally as LD and LCW (to be fair, those 2 seem to just have insane genetic gifts, both adopted pretty suboptimal training strategies in their younger years).
The simple fact that he came with a competing game plan to go against the legends says volumes about his game sense and technical abilities. Momota and the japanese squad sure learned a lot from him. He showed energy conservation is a important factor to stepping up the results in men singles. I posted a match of his but in a lefthand mirror to study his style and it became obvious his innate talent was on another level.
one thing I noticed in his game is that he plays an extremely fast-paced game. I had put the video on 0.25 speed to break-down his footwork and then sped it up to normal pace in the later parts of the video. While watching at a normal pace, it felt like I had sped it up to 1.25x by mistake.
Nice, thanks ! I will use that cause stamina is my problem and i don't want to change from my double's racket so i may have better drive than my opponent.
Learn to utilize high lifts and constantly pinning your opponent to the baseline. Mix it up with drops and holds then lift to the back again and watch your opponent tire much faster than you.
Last meal before a game I eat oats and fruits. Try it. It is the Anders Antonsen way. You will feel light and fast instead of the usual just carbs and protein.
By learning to make defensive drives/lifts "cross court." It messes up their footwork as most are trained to follow up smashes on the side a smash was made.
The last 2 couple of games between them were sort of close, i'd say technically he had the skill to beat LD. But his fitness was his downfall to losing most games. Their h2h is 1-3. I wouldn't say "shit on" but LD is the goat tbf so he was expected to win. Tago went crazy vs LCW in the indonesian open 2014 though.
could you in your future videos just briefly show the player on court (with arrow or sth like that) that you're referring to? sometimes i just cannot make out who u talking about unless its a Axelsen ✌🏻✌🏻✌🏻✌🏻🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍
I agree. I'm trying to figure out who the player being discussed is between the top or bottom one. By the time I get it, I didn't listen to what was said. Need to replay video like 2 or 3 times. Thanks!
Kenichi tago is one of the most underrated player
yes agree, he is one of the japaese prodigies but due to the gambling issue with Kento Momota is the reason why he is forbidden to compete internationally
He's underrated bcause he is in the same era with LD and LCW.
Oh Nikhil jaikumar tamilnadu badminton U15 player
Tago had one of the craziest runs in all England 2010, beating all the Chinese seeded players then losing narrowly to LCW. He definitely put Japan on the map before momota became the next big thing

Which was a shame because it cost us about 2,5 years of prime Momota
Tago was a joy to watch.
It's very efficient. I guess, the only reason why Tago retired early was that his body was not designed for this sports. But he is truly a Champion of the Sports.

I'm going to adopt Tago's style of play. Road to All Ireland 2025. Yeah!!!
Tago’s technical skill is superb. Even when ppl hailing Taufik as king of backhand, Tago’s backhand is great too.
his play style is one of my favorites
Woah you really made a vid about this underrated player.
He has a YT channel were he teaches badminton. At 50yrs old, I am still able to compete vs much much younger players by emphasizing control over anything. Please make more of these vids!! Especially on the strategy of using less stamina.

1:18 young Momota!

To be honest, he got very good game IQ
Great video
always thought kenichi tago was underrated compared to momota

Sadly the gambling scandal ended his entire career, he is my favourite player to watch for some time.
And make a video on what to eat what not to eat before tournament
Last meal before a game I eat oats and fruits. Try it. It is the Anders Antonsen way. You will feel light and fast instead of the usual just carbs and protein.
New video topic - analysis on hu zhe an beating top players in King cup
🤜🏼🤛🏼👍🏼
How can you counter a smash style or style involving smash winners
By learning to make defensive drives/lifts "cross court." It messes up their footwork as most are trained to follow up smashes on the side a smash was made.
It's unfortunate for him how strict Japan is. He deserved another chance.
Too old and out of shape now.
Make a video on how to play any stroke in same action
I'm 4th
Kenichi Tago can even won over Taufik Hidayat couple of times
Unfortunately he was involved in illegal gambling activities and retired in 2016
but brotha still got absolutely shit on by lin dan
Ofc bc Lin dan the goat and tago has little stamina for long rallies which lin dan specialized
Like everybody else😂 , but he put on a good fight thou. His strokes are nice to watch

Genius player but he fall for gambling
