  • Since 2016 I own a very old wooden Dragon sailboat. This video shows a very small item of the ongoing restoration process. When the boat ist only half-finished, why should you play around with tiny brass parts?
Watch me milling a brass part for a compass bezel and Karl Gröne of groenemetall.de soldering the bezel with silver. For me it was a rare occasion to watch a master craftsman doing soldering of brass. The metal glue I used with my first attempt did not work properly and I had to ask my friend Karl for help.

Using the drill press as a lathe that was genius. Thanks for the detailed video. All the modern plastic really clashes with an older wood boat. Bringing it back to brass. We have to watch out for galvanic corrosion with mixing aluminum and steel and copper or brass on a boat. I am epoxy painting all my steel and aluminum but the polished brass, I just might polyurethane over some and let other parts go green. Maybe if we add zinc onto the steel, it's going to last , just a small piece of zinc strip wrapped around it somewhere. Even trees have trace electrical currents that the sap uses to break down minerals. We are just trying to keep our boats from going back to nature. Great video. Guten tag.

Believe it or not: The silver solder Karl used is from the 1930s - the same age as my boat. Soldering with is no longer requested by customers and he still has some from his father. :: Unglaublich aber wahr: Das Silberlot ist aus den 30er Jahren und damit so alt wie mein Boot. Es wird heute nur noch selten verwendet und Karl hat noch "Altbestände".
