  • This is how I shaped and laminated short wooden frames for my old dragon sailboat. Oak frames are 1 by 1 inch in thickness and consist of 4 strips each. Preparation of the wood: Moderate amount of steam for one hour, wood kept inside a polyethylene hose during the process, milk chum on a gas burner served as the steam generator.
    Special thanks to Louis Sauzedde for teaching me steaming wood inside a hose instead of a traditional steam box. "Tips from a shipwright" • How to steam bend wood... .
    For my longer s-shaped frames in the center section of the boat I used simple d.i.y. metal clamps instead of wooden blocks (featured my video #4 • [4] Laminating S-frame... ).

    Loved the ingenious spline you used to replicate the shape of the frames. Excellent work; I will definitely be following your progress.

    dieser Kontur Rahmen zum anpassen , der sieht aus wie eine Motorradkette aus Holz ... das ist einfach und dennoch genial !

    Awesome video and craftsmanship. Thanks you. I;m currently trying to do the same on my old dragon. How did you fasten the wooden frames to the hull? I think I can see you used glue. But then also screws from outsite the hull inward in the woorden frames?

    • @vonhier
      @vonhier  3 года назад +1

      Yes. I fastened the frames with screws (countersunk heads, stainless steel V4A, Torx). This was possible because I covered the ugly heads when laminating the hull later on. My planks had been sanded to many times and were not thick enough to cover the screws with wooden plugs instead. I assume the epoxy glue will provide most of the strength but 2 screws per plank obtain best contact between plank and frame - especially where there is no room for clamps.

      @@vonhier is it possible to fasten them from the inside of the boat? I mean, putting screws from the inside, by being careful not to go all through the plank thickness? so in short; epoxy glue + screws from the inside towards outside.

      @vonhier  2 года назад

      @@NoChrReq I would not expect a suitable binding from this because the working part of the screw inside the plank is very short. In fact, using this method to my understanding will only keep the frame in place until the epoxy has cured. Maybe okay for short boats and when the planks are in good condition.

    This is just excellent. how would you do this differently for longer frames which would have a bit of a twist in them?

    • @vonhier
      @vonhier  4 года назад

      Thank you. For longer frames I would use the metal clamps I made. ruclips.net/video/TbkBPlAkZy4/видео.html . If the the twist ist not too extensive and you can measure it with a sliding bevel, you can mount the clamps accordingly. The idea is not to mount them flat to the surface but to elevate them with wooden wedges (which have to be made to measure)

    ….. great Job, steht bei einem meiner Folkeboote dieses Jahr auch an.

      Ich habe vor mehr als 10 Jahren an meinem damaligen Folkeboot auch Spanten auflaminiert - leider damals noch nicht mit der Werkstatt, auf die ich jetzt zugreifen kann. Ich denke immer noch gern an mein Folkeboot zurück. Viel Erfolg!

    1:17 here you are training the pre steamed laminates to a random curvature? just to make it easier to bend them later on to the template you made?

    • @vonhier
      @vonhier  2 года назад

      Meanwhile I do not pre steam at all. But it is essential that you use naturally dried wood, only. The molecular structure of industrially steam dried wood is spoilt by the rapid and very hot drying process. In most cases this wood will not tolerate narrow curves.

    Did you steam the laminates first?

    • @vonhier
      @vonhier  6 лет назад

      Yes, I did. Moderate amount of steam for one hour, wood kept inside a polyethylene hose, milk chum on a gas burner as the steam generator. Method as seen on "Tips from a shipwright" on YT - except the milk chum I must say :-)

      @@vonhier would it have been possible without the steaming?
