9:38 Part of the reason why the prisoners in Narkino 5 aren't acting like hardened criminals is because they probably weren't. The recent robbery on Aldhani might have led the Empire to ratchet things up significantly, but I'd wager they've been arresting relatively innocent people to send to to Imperial factory prisons for as long as there's been an Empire. I'd also wager that the Empire sent serious criminals, particularly those with histories of violence, to other less pleasant facilities.

I agree, I am not even sure that most of the men in that prison did anything wrong or broke any laws, Cassian Andor didn't. The empire needed cheap labour or better yet free. This has been done in all wars on this planet and was done by the old European emipres in colonial times. Today this is done by companies in capitalist countries that use sweatshops and work camps in countries where people are poor and human rights are non existant and under fascist rulers and regimes.

It's like these Imperial officers needed to fill a quota, like police officers once needed to do for passing out tickets to reach their quota for the month. These Imperials seem to have the right to arrest any person, even just on suspicious intent. Obviously the judge of the area didn't care either. They need to do as the Empire commands.

1 reason for the lack of aliens is likely due to budget. They clearly spent a lot of resources on VFX, set pieces, and acting. So they likely didn't have much to scrap for prosthetics and costume design. Another good reason for it though, is that the weight in a lot of scenes is carried by the excellent facial expressions from the actors. Which is something you just can portray with alien prosthetics. Imagine how much less weight Andy Serkis' scenes would have if we didn't see his raw facial expressions

The Narkina 5 prisoners are also all men, which of course is logical as a mixed population would cause all sorts of drama, and the work is very physical, though I have wondered if some of the other floors are entirely female workers though this is unlikely. A random alien on each floor would probably be the 'odd man out' and that would break up the unity of each group or the alien's difference might cause the workers to focus on them. It might make sense to have isolated floors of near humans like Mirialans, Zabrak or Twi'leks (which are said to be the second most common species in the galaxy). Since Umbara was under Imperial occupation at this point in time, Umbarans would be a logical choice, on a dimly lit floor due to their low sensitivity to light.

One thing I've also noticed is that the Empire's officers and troops are pretty much the same species, with very little variations between the humanoid species. While the Empire probably doesn't care if any of the prisoners die, remember that Andor was "only" sentenced to 6 years. There are probably a lot of prisoners serving set sentences that are expected to go back out into public life again. However, they will have spent a very intense, stressful 6 years (or so) working closely with, and depending on, their fellow humans for survival. So when released, even if they still don't love the Empire, there'll likely be a gulf of empathy between them and non-humans they encounter... a psychological conditioning that will be deeply rooted and hard to overcome.

I think if it was just the easier aliens to do like Mirialans, Zeltrons, or Pantorans they could do it, but if they started introducing even just near-humans, it would destroy the uniform blandness of the prison.

How would feel if a Zabrak man made the record time for assembling something while imprisoned by the empire? It would likely be the standard and if humans cannot keep up, they’re zapped.

I think you nailed it, I'd be surprised if the Gilroys aren't working with a very tight budget. Filming mainly on the UK, trying to avoid unnecessary CG. No super big stars. Using big action set pieces rarely. Plus it's such an actorly show they're trying to avoid obscuring faces and latex hides micro expressions.

Aliens and droids (done well) are expensive. If I have to sacrifice those in season 1 to get tons and tons of K2SO in season 2, I’m on board! 😂
Seriously, though, if those funds were diverted to get more really talented actors like Andy Serkis to come in for a whole arc, and to ensure whatever CGI they DO use is very high quality, then I’m ok with aliens only in the background for this one SW show.

They should have had one shock-resistant alien in the prison for comedic purposes. It'd be great to watch the alien be like "Wait, was that supposed to hurt?". Then they'd realize that they need to _pretend_ it does. Bonus points if the alien overacts being electrocuted in the most hammy fashion possible.

  • @thechangeling3851
    @thechangeling3851 Год назад +4

    The answer?
    1. Humans get around a lot...really, the population of humans is frankly kinda absurd in star wars that it is a suprise there isn't more star-racists against humans. It also helps they come from a variety of cultures whom might dissent against the empire.
    2. Slavery/gulags: it is FAR easier to likely enslave other races to work in dangerous jobs that imperials don't do.
    3. Shoot first, ask questions later: I am unsure what imperial doctrine is on the alien, but it appears less favorable than the human...it might be that aliens are victims of greater brutality/use of force resulting in many, many more deaths.
    4. Racist jail systems: it might be far easier to detain a bunch of aliens all together whom may have a variety of needs compared to most humans, add in the abillity to easily control if they get uppity (a imperial might hesitate to bombard a a human prison colony, but a all alien one? That's "martial practice")
Tl;Dr: the empire is racists, but have some justification for it in their minds in one way or another...and besides? Who is the people going to complain to on the government acting out of line? The government?

The real explanation from the producer’s perspective is probably due to budget cuts since it is costly to put background characters into alien costumes. A reason for the storyline would probably be a strategic organizing of prisoners based on their physiology that are better suited for certain tasks a project was required. I read somewhere that the writers of the older trilogy had to be creative in making backstories when budget cuts happened. For return of the Jedi the slave girl Oola was supposed to live but they had to change the story of her dying in the ranchor pit because of budget restraints.

Possibility of Rebellion is also another reason why prisons are segregated, if a mixing pot of species are thrown into the same dungeon, beings from across the galaxy can find common cause through all their injustices. All of a sudden you have different rebel cells in contact with one another, who can join together and trade information and work together when their time is served.

I agree with your in lore reasons but I think the added benefit for Palpatine is if everyone hates and resents each other they can't come together to go after him. The Alliance became so successful because it went against that and showed the Empire persecuted everyone at some point. Another benefit is that all this made the Dark Side swell with power. That increased Palpatine's power since there were only 2 Sith and he really wasn't trying to have Vader on his level anyway. So he didn't really put in the Sith minimum level of instruction to Vader's learning. Enough for his apprentice to be a more efficient attack dog than Maul but less ambitious than Dooku.

My guess is that it would be too difficult for the Empire to have to the necessary accomodations, food and medical facilities (limited as they appear to be) for non-human species at each facility. As others have stated, this is probably why the prisoners are chosen to go to a certain prison/factory.

I think that most alien species are more resilient than humans, and that is why they made a "nicer" prison. I think since the original operation parameters for these facilities meant the prisoners would have been released at the end of less harsh sentences. They wanted to alter these human's behavior, break them before releasing them back into society, but now with near total obedience to their Imperial masters.
The directive to just keep the prisoners for double or triple time was newly instituted. Which is why they messed up and placed that one dude back where they shouldn't. This was Andor's fault, he was part of the heist that triggered all the new rules and directives to keep prisoners and to crack down on anyone who seemed to step out of line.
