    Finally, a tutorial that I could understand and follow. I did this in front of a mirror for, maybe a thousand times or more throughout an entire month. At first, my mouth wasn't used to this and I couldn't control my tongue to stay flat on the bottom, but after first week I started seeing some improvement. Now I can do this right at almost all the time.

    I believe that æ has a shorter and longer version. The vowel in “had” is much shorter than the vowel in “sad.” “Bad” is short when it’s the past tense of “bid” (“He bad me good day”) and much longer when it means “not good.” “Glad” as a girl’s name is much shorter than “I’d be glad to do it.”

    The difference was really clear to me when you pronounced the two sounds , but most of the time it isn't that clear in a word, especially in American English accent. For example, when I listen to the recording on Cambridge Dictionary for the word "man" I cannot hear the /æ/ sound, all I hear is a little longer /e/ :/

    • @britishaccentmethod
      @britishaccentmethod  6 лет назад

      Oi Pedro, gostei sim! Sempre fique feliz lá :) Você é de onde no Brasil?
      You're right. The American pronunciation is more like/me:n/ - and this applies to many /æ/ /e/ words. This is one reason why I recommend training yourself to hear the difference in English pronunciation, as it's a difference that you wouldn't otherwise learn.

    • @britishaccentmethod

      Hi Saul, good question and well noticed. Different dictionaries use different symbols for this sound. I use the Cambridge dictionary which uses the /e/ symbol.
      The important thing is that you're consistent with the symbol that you use to avoid confusion.
      Thanks for bringing this up.

      I also wondered about this once, as I studied both English and German at university and coldn't help comparing them using the knowledge I gained from two seaparate phonetics&phonology courses.
      Since there's only one e-like sound in English, it is usually transcribed with the normal letter, for practicality's sake I guess. If you want to compare English with other languages, however, then you'll need a wider range of symbols for e-like sounds and in that case, the IPA symbol for the English e is actually /ɛ/. The same goes for r - the English sound is actually ɹ̠ in IPA, but it is conventionally transcribed as since there are no other r-like sounds that you'd need several symbols for to distinguish it from.

    you know what? since i was year 1 school my english teacher taught me pronounce AND =END not AND = A(æ)ND although when i checked in the oxford dictionary which obviously used british english , its state the AND = A(æ)nd not END. now, when i pronounce AND use æ sounds my friend goes like "do you learn English at school?" or "what grade did you get for English in GCSE?" .. i told them, that of what i pronounced was the truth pronounce of the word AND.. till now im feel unconfident to use the real pronounce of every english word..😔😔

      Hi Anas, Thanks for sharing your story. I'm sorry to hear that, but I'm proud of you for using the right pronunciation! Did you teacher in school speak American English?
      It's always good to use the correct pronunciation...especially in formal situations. As for your friends, you could either show them the dictionary where it shows them the correct pronunciation (that you have), or use the pronunciation that makes you feel comfortable.
      I hope this helps you, and I'll always be pleased that you've made an effort to speak with correct pronunciation :)

    It's very helpful! But the "æ" sound has still confused me, when the "æ" is followed by "n", "ng", "m“, the "æ" sounds like a "e" sound. Could you help me get it straight? Thanks!

    • @britishaccentmethod
      @britishaccentmethod  4 года назад

      I'm glad you've found it helpful. The main thing to be aware of...especially in relaxed normal speech is the height of the tongue in the mouth. for 'e' it's slightly higher than 'æ'
      I've created a whole course on these 2 sounds in my pronunciation programme because the best way to train these 2 sounds is with lots of examples and by comparing pairs of words that are identical apart from these 2 sounds. Is it something you'd be interested in joining?
      Would be good to have you in the community.
      Thanks for your comment.

      Hi there, Yes I am confused too. I think this is a very common problem for most of non English speakers like us. To improve or fix this, I keep the "e" sounded longer with a slight smile. For example, the word Man, I pronounce it as Meeeeeeeeeeen with a slight smile. For the word Men, I pronounce it quickly without a smile. Try what I just said to see if it works for you. I bet you will get it closer or better.

    Thank very much. I'm from Russia. In my country, many people mispronounce the word "black" but it's surprising that the word "apple" is correctly pronounced. I don't understand why.

    • @britishaccentmethod
      @britishaccentmethod  3 года назад +1

      Hey, sorry for the slow response.
      The reason is because the position of the /l/ sound and /k/ sounds in Russian are different to English, which effects how Russians pronounce the vowel sound in between.
      1 tip that will help is to make sure you're making a 'light L' sound in the word black.
