@@Pululapu I recommend 18-105 first. It has great flexibility and the only lens in whole e mount which has widest focal lenght. I use a6500 +18-105 mainly.after you feel like you need lower aperture like 1.8 or 1.4 for better low lighr performance, you can consider a prime lens.
Suggestion. Compare the 18-105 zoom to the 18-200 and/or 55-210 zoom. For general all-round zoom this is the dilemma that many face including myself. I did end up getting the 18-105 for variety of reasons, but many will wonder if they will miss the extra reach of the other 2 zooms. More importantly, I realized the Clear Image Zoom feature on the Alphas can make up the difference in reach with no image degradation. It would be interesting to actually compare the 105 @2x Clear Image zoom vs. the native 200 or 210 in IQ. My bet is the 18-105 still wins!
You say the comparison doesn't make sense, but as a beginner, I appreciate this comparison. It's nice to see a bit of the capabilities between a prime and zoom lens. I had both these lenses for quite a number of years (I’ve since sold the zoom), so although I can’t make a proper test now, perhaps I can still share something from the back of my head. Generally speaking, the 35 at f1.8 gives a shallower DOF than the 18-105 zoomed all the way, wide open . It also has a larger magnification ratio (can focus closer) However, if we talk about bokeh - how nice the out of focus area is rendered, i have to give it to the zoom lens. This is because on the 35 prime, from f1.8 to about f2.8 the image has a bit of ‘bloom’. This is more prominent for close up shots (because of LoCA), and scenes with high contrast lighting. In short, the prime produces more blurry backgrounds, but the zoom produces cleaner, smoother bokeh even though it’s less blurry. For me it’s a tie - either can gain the upper hand depending on the subject and kind of shot.

DaveSincere thanks Dave and yeah I am feeling the same way the 35mm equals 50mm after the crop so it's awesome. thought of getting the 24mm but I like the extra mm for the close up look. and I will mostly use this for picture portraits and street photography. I got the 18-105 for all around lens and mostly for video
Amwfilms Not getting the 50mm is no-brainer IMO. Just feel too niche and works mainly for portraits. Not wide enough for other stuff, and it doesn't zoom well anyway. If you need to zoom with your feet with the 35mm you'll likely need to with the 50mm also. However, 35 vs 30 vs 24mm. I think that debate is more close on which range is most versatile. 35mm no way you are doing a selfie and even can be restricting for street photography. I actually kinda of wish Sony made a 28/30mm. Even with my 18-105, I know i shoot more often wider than 35, than zoomed. But I guess it depends on what you like to shoot and your style.
Would you consider doing an intro/overview of using the 35? I've absolutely LOVED your videos with it and actually purchased it thanks to you! However, I am new to interchangeable lenses and it would be very helpful to have an overview to get started. I trust and love your work. I hope you will consider!
This is a really great comparison. It's a good demonstration of what you give up going with a versatile zoom lens versus a prime. It's not easy to realize the advantages of a prime lens without experiencing them.
Another great video!! I was waiting really for pics of the 18-105 in the far range to appreciate the bokeh quality. Btw, congratulations for how well you present the contens: honest, clear and summarising at the end. Good job! In the meanwhile I got also the 35mmf1.8, which after 5 shots became my favorite lense. However, it is has extreme noisy aperture blades. When stopping from f6.3 to f22, you can clearly hear the grinding. As a result, the autofocus over f6.3 gets very loud too. Does it happen also with your lense? Thanks!
Do you encounter these noise issues when you're shooting video on the 35 prime? It's the one thing holding me back from purchasing it -- I'd like to use it as a mixed-used photo/video lens, but I'm concerning the operation of its motors is going to come into the audio of the video I'll be shooting.
Thanks fer all the hard work !! But -- would you say that 1.) You are not going to see a difference in 16x20 or smaller prints at a reasonable viewing distance, and 2.) You would see no difference in 4K video. Just trying to get a feel for what all this sharpness really means in practice. I am thinking both lenses look the same when you look at a result. Yes ? No ?
Hi, thank you very much for all your reviews. I have a question if there is a sound justification to afford 35mm already having 18-105 cause I assume that I could achieve better shots during my city-break trips thanks to prime lens.
I felt the same problem with Sony 18-105 lens that is less sharp, the prime lens is still the best choice to produce sharp images, but thanks alot for your video.
I own a A7R2 with FE 35mm f1.4 lens and a 6300 cameras. I am thinking whether to get a E35mm f1.8 lens to compliment the 6300 or just use the FE35mm with it. I like the E35mm f1.8 because of the weight. What do you think?
This video puts the kabash on the Sony 18-105 mm G lens. Zoom lenses are all about convenience at the serious expense of every other performance parameters. Thanks for this video.
I've been thinking of getting a 10-18mm lens from Sony , It would be nice if you made a review on it. I like seeing your reviews on lenses since it does help me decide wether I want to buy it or not. And so far I've gotten 18-105 & 35mm from Sony but I'm also interested in seeing your thoughts on the 10-18mm
I think people ask for comparisons like this because they haven't spent a lot of time shooting with both. It takes practice to generate an idea of look and style of a certain lens!
Hands down 18-105. I have both on an a6300. The 35mm is nicer at lower light, smaller and for bokeh at that focal length but you’re limited. Especially since you’re on crop.
I got this lens best off your earlier videos. I love it, I also got the Rokinon 12mm which I love to, but having a manual lens really makes you appreciate the OIS and the best autofocus system around.
Hello Arthur! Which lens gives a better bokeh for portraits? 105mm (fully zoomed) f4 or 35mm f1.8? 35mm worries me about the portrait because I would have to get a lot closer to the person while he is being photographed, I mean less than half a meter if I only photograph the face. With 105mm I would have to move away 1.5m which is acceptable. From the point of view of the person being photographed, I think it's a little awkward when someone so close gets in your face with a camera... Please write me your opinion on this. I have found this infrormation on DOF simulator on web.
wow...u must have gotten the god roll copy of that lens lol. ive only been using it when i bring my gimble, out you just made my camera bag a few grams heavier i gotta bring this lens with me every where now just in case . keep up the vids and thanks for the reply
Great video, i know you are matching specs across the board, but I was wondering how much on the ISO you feel you will need to "bump up" on the 18-105 to match the Prime Lens specs?
I was looking for a similar strange comparison between the 18-105mm f/4 and the Sigma 30mm F1.4 Contemporary DC DN. The Sigma is affordable and the limitations of f/4 on the 18-105mm for low light and indoor keep me from using my A6300. Although this was a Sony to Sony comparison, it was enough to show me there's a big difference in the extra stops. Thanks (already subbed).
Thanks a ton for this awesome comparison. Wished it was there a week ago when I was deciding between these two as a newbie. Glad that I went with 18-105 for more flexibility like you mentioned. Time to play with a6300 :D
I bought this lens (Sigma 19mm) but I have a big big problem ... when I record with autofocus on the A6000 the clip is very flickering along the edges of the video ... some help?
I have that 19mm on my Sony A6000 50% of the time and the Sigma 60mm 50% no problem at all, superb lenses. But since I have that A6000 I would love to get that Sony 18-105mm (I love mainly fix lens). It is not as sharp as Zeiss, but the price is OK for me with Sony lens.
I need help. I'm going on a trip and im looking for an upgrade from the kit lens. I will be shooting videos and also taking photos both landscape and portrait.1. 35mm 1.8 f oss2. 18-105 g Lens 3. 50mm 1.8f Please tell me why you chose that?
Great vid. I've been looking at both of these lenses, so nice to see the comparison. Would be interesting to see you compare the 16-70 Zeiss as well. Lots of online discussion of that lens vs the 18-105.
im confused a little 18-105 seems like it would cover just about anything. why would you ever need another lens? why pay $2100 for the 24-70 gm or a ziss?
i bought the prime lens as u recommended, but got 1 problem with the angle..i have to walk back far far away to have a full frame...and thats annoyed me...im looking for an affordable lens that can do wide range...any recommendations? oh i have a favor for ur video..can u compare the lens side by side with the same spot like u did on the 35mm vs 50mm thanks love you video
I use the sony f1.8 50mm for low light but thinking of getting the 18-105 for the zoom range. But when i see these results you sacrefice quite a lot in qaulity for it
Hello, Stupid question: is clear that the 35 takes more sharpen imagines. But, can this sharpening be obtained on g lens photos in lightroom, by using sharpening/clarity/texture sliders, or is another kind of sharpening you are reffering to?
This is really helpful, I got both of these lenses for my fs5 but can u please suggest some other E Mount zoom lens with maximum f stop of f2.8? I am looking for E mount solution to 70-200 etc
I have recently purchased sony a 6000 (used body) only to realise later that the lenses of sony r quite hefty in pricing, i think i’ll go with the kit lens. I would 16mm @ f3.5 which 18-105 couldn’t deliver, i would also get 35mm at or around f 4 which is identical to 35mm of 18-105mm, though i’ll have to compromise with 35mm, f1.8 of 35mm prime lens.
I agree that some of the delta in sharpness you show is really showing a difference from the lense. But I fully disagree that the compression algorithm will effect the pictures equally. Specially unsharp areas of an image will be more compressed due to similarity of the pixels that are next to each other. To avoid this, the JPG converters are very agressive on the automatic sharpen settings and create additional sharpness in areas that are in focus. (That is why a lot of people complain that RAW images look soft compared to JPG) So what is sharpen and what not is out of controll and comparing that is may giving a direction but not a full picture.
I gather your samples are direct from the camera? For some reason, I can not get the same sharpness using the 18-205 on an A6400 even at f/6.3 @ 1/1000 sec at 34mm using eye AF and multiple shot (mid setting). None of the 4-5 shots taken have this level of sharpness on the eye. I would love to know why. For this reason I would like to find a program that can read the EXIF data and show the focus point to confirm where it was at the time the shot was taken.
Love your channel and your great reviews man! I have a 35mm 1.8 and I absolutely love it. Do you find yourself shooting more often with the prime or zoom for everyday use?
Anil Chitrapu Awesome, thank you! In the last 6 months I've been using the 35mm about 85% of the time. When I used Canon cameras I remember always using a zoom lens, but I've definitely started using primes a lot more frequently with the A6000.
Anil Chitrapu prime lenses on the a6300 are nice especially with clear image zoom allowing me to zoom in 2x its almost like having 2 lenses in one except u dont gain the lens compression by zooming with clear image but its still helpful if u are out and about with just a prime and need some extra reach
TechnologyMafia I have both lens as well. this comparison has encouraged me to us the 35 prime more during the day and not just for low light. that said I have noticed the 18-105 has much better stabilization compared to the 35, especially for video. have you noticed a difference as well?
Thanks. I would say the reach of the tele does not outweigh the clarity of the prime. I am glad I did not get this tele. I do have the 16-70 f4 zeiss, which is ok, especially after your eval to the kit lens, wish the Zeiss was much better than kit.
Great job. I love how you compare lenses. I am noob in photography and have an A6000. I subscribed a while ago. Keep up the good work. Do you think I could compensate for the aperture by using a camera with in-body stabilization and longer shutter speed?
im switching from panasonic to sony. Im getting the sony a6500 and im assuming the 18-105 for my all around broll camera. Any suggestions on 2 cheaper primes? one for wider vlogging (20-30mm maybe?) and one for interviews (50-85mm?) Any suggestions with the 3 best lenses i am looking for at a cheaper price but with good autofocus
you should be shooting RAW. While looking at the fine JPEG results off the camera isnt a terrible way to compare pictures, it's not truly accurate. one could make a better comparison by the results attainable through processing RAW.
After your review I bought the 18 to 105 lens and a6500.This will be my only lens also my first lens for videos. I have switched to interchangeable lens system recently. I own a RX10 MK3.
Excuse me May i ask your opinion? So, i just bought sony a6000 (body only) and want to choose lens for the needs of portrait, traveling and video. Whether sony lens E 35mm f / 1.8 OSS match with that? And also i have 10-18mm canon lens that i want to pair with sony camera, what brand adapter that could possibly match and quickly respond to autofocus and whether the result is good ? I hope ur answer could help me Thank you so much
This is a rather mute comparison since you shot mostly low light gray/winter scenes with an f4 lens. It doesn't give a fair comparison. Obviously the aperture limitations can't keep up on the f4.
@@ArthurR Could you expand on this reasoning a bit? I have the kit lens and am trying to pick a new lens to act as an "all-around" / travel lens that I can use for shooting photo and video. Gun to your head, you have a kit lens, a 35mm prime, and the 18-105 on a table and you can only pick a single lens to bring with you for a few weeks trip, photo and video both planned, what are you taking?
Thank you for doing this comparison video. While I agreed that it is not an apple to apple comparison, but the information in the video meant a lot to me, a 18105 owner. Your finding is very similar to mine when I did a comparison myself few months ago comparing the sharpness of this 18105 against the well praised zeiss 55mm f1.8. This is to satisfy my curiousity as to how much difference in sharpness, when it comes to this 18105 zoom vs primes. I totally agreed when you said that it would be hard pressed to find the different image quality of the 18105 against the 35mm prime unless we zoomed in. This information helps a lot for my future purchase, as the way I see it now is that, I 18105 is good enough for my need. The only advantage a fast prime like 35mm f1.8 for ME would be only the 2 and 1/3 stop of extra light. As such, I can put off the purchase of a fast prime as long as possible till the time I started to do a lot of low light outdoor shooting....which might not be in the near future. Once again, thank you very much for your awesome videos. So far, your videos contain most practical information.
I agree with your points. I haven't found that the kit lens is better than the 18-105mm in any situations, so when you buy the 18-105 you are getting a lens that does what the kit lens does, but slightly better, and a bit more range! The only negative is the size.
I'm really curious how the kit lens stacks up against the 35mm 1.8. i just got the a6000 with the kit lens and am curious to seee on what I'm missing out on. if you get a chance, can you do a comparison. thanks
There's no comparison -- the 35 prime is significantly sharper and faster. Unless you'll REALLY miss the range variety on the 16-50, the 35 would be a HUGE upgrade.

DaveSincere thanks Dave and yeah I am feeling the same way the 35mm equals 50mm after the crop so it's awesome. thought of getting the 24mm but I like the extra mm for the close up look. and I will mostly use this for picture portraits and street photography. I got the 18-105 for all around lens and mostly for video
smoothmoose yeah I feel the same. I really want to shot at night as well as have a wide aperture for during the day still learning about the camera
If you were picking a single lens to go around on a trip with, shooting photo and video, would you take the 35 prime or the 18-105 zoom?
@@RageCage1701 I'm annoyed no one answered you. I'm trynna figure out the same thing
Are all his sample shots RAW or jpeg ??
I felt the same problem with Sony 18-105 lens that is less sharp, the prime lens is still the best choice to produce sharp images, but thanks alot for your video.
Looks like if you have an A6300 or even A6500 especially the A6300, these two are the only lens you need
I love travelling but I hate carry many lens should I buy 35mm or 18-105 mm? mostly I use for video and portrait
What would you get if you were trying to select a single all-around travel lens for photo and video?
I have found this infrormation on DOF simulator on web.
the shot of you holding both the 18-105mm and the 35mm...what lens did u catch that shot with?...
That one was shot with the trusty 16-50mm kit lens!
wow...u must have gotten the god roll copy of that lens lol. ive only been using it when i bring my gimble, out you just made my camera bag a few grams heavier i gotta bring this lens with me every where now just in case . keep up the vids and thanks for the reply
Great video, i know you are matching specs across the board, but I was wondering how much on the ISO you feel you will need to "bump up" on the 18-105 to match the Prime Lens specs?
Can'rt make my mind about which one to purchase: 35 f 1.8 or 24 f 1.8 ? I mainly shoot videos on a6500 and hate the kit lens
I think this is a fair review. I always wanted to know the differences between kit lens vs low light primes
What is your overall takeaway from the review?
your videos are great sources for newbie like me who's completely clueless about which lens to choose 😅 great work!
I am considering the 18-105, but it seems the sharpness is not as expected as what I want
No zoom lens is going to give you the sharpness of a prime, unfortunately. The 18-105 is better than the zeiss 16-70 in my tests.
i am using 50 mm prime lens, I would like to find another replace for my ki
just bought a6500 should I go for 18-105 mm or just 35
If you can choose only one which would that be?
I was looking for a similar strange comparison between the 18-105mm f/4 and the Sigma 30mm F1.4 Contemporary DC DN. The Sigma is affordable and the limitations of f/4 on the 18-105mm for low light and indoor keep me from using my A6300. Although this was a Sony to Sony comparison, it was enough to show me there's a big difference in the extra stops. Thanks (already subbed).
Thanks, yet again for the Video. Would you still recommend Sony 35mm f1.8 against Sigma 30mm f1.4 dc dn Contemporary.
nihalhbk Yes, I would. The sigma is sharper, but the Sony focus is a bit more accurate and the OSS makes a difference.
Hey! So I just got myself an A7iii! What would you recommend getting out of these two lens!? I already have the kir len (28-75mm).
I need help. I'm going on a trip and im looking for an upgrade from the kit lens. I will be shooting videos and also taking photos both landscape and portrait.1. 35mm 1.8 f oss2. 18-105 g Lens 3. 50mm 1.8f
Please tell me why you chose that?
Could you do a comparison between the 18-105f4 and the 18-200?
Great vid. I've been looking at both of these lenses, so nice to see the comparison. Would be interesting to see you compare the 16-70 Zeiss as well. Lots of online discussion of that lens vs the 18-105.
interesting, thanks for the comparison. I have the 35mm, going to be adding the 18-105 soon!
im confused a little 18-105 seems like it would cover just about anything. why would you ever need another lens? why pay $2100 for the 24-70 gm or a ziss?
i bought the prime lens as u recommended, but got 1 problem with the angle..i have to walk back far far away to have a full frame...and thats annoyed me...im looking for an affordable lens that can do wide range...any recommendations? oh i have a favor for ur video..can u compare the lens side by side with the same spot like u did on the 35mm vs 50mm thanks love you video
I use the sony f1.8 50mm for low light but thinking of getting the 18-105 for the zoom range. But when i see these results you sacrefice quite a lot in qaulity for it
Can you compare the 18 - 105 to Tamron 28 75? I am stuck in between the two.
Hello,
Stupid question: is clear that the 35 takes more sharpen imagines. But, can this sharpening be obtained on g lens photos in lightroom, by using sharpening/clarity/texture sliders, or is another kind of sharpening you are reffering to?
love your videos. I have the Sony a6000 and just got the 35mm. looking at getting a zoom lens also, keep up the good work my friend!
Awesome, thank you for the compliment! Enjoy your A6000 and the 35mm!
so grateful for this because im trying to figure out what lens I really need for portraits but also everything else I want/need
There has been an update on the lens firmware did it have any improvement on the quality?
Hi Arthur, great reviews. Will the Sony 35mm 1.8 work on my A5100 camera? Thank.you
Yet another great video! Looking forward to see you do reviews on Sony's 16mm and 20mm wide angle primes!
Yes, I want to look at the 20mm. Most say the 16mm is pretty bad.
TechnologyMafia 16 mm is garbage tho, regret for bought those lens
Would you be willing to compare the Sony 35mm 1.8 with the Zeiss 35mm 2.8? Would be very interesting to see the results.
I dont get it, shouldnt the right one's ISO higher than 100? Was it a mistake or how is it it's just as bright as the left one?
This was great! I have the 35mm f1.8 and been thinking of getting the 18-105 as an all round lens
I got the 18-105 and it a great all around lens. I even use it on my A7R2 because of the weight.
Have the Sony 18/105. Great results. No difference to 100% vs. 99%.
Great video! Can we use the 18-105 with a sony A7 II?
You compare sharpness with JPG? Are you sure that the differences don't come from the compression?
Yes, im sure. The compression would affect both pictures equally, and the difference in sharpness is very noticeable.
(That is why a lot of people complain that RAW images look soft compared to JPG)
So what is sharpen and what not is out of controll and comparing that is may giving a direction but not a full picture.
Str8poisin tv how do use the clear image zoom with the prime? I only use it with zoom lens.
Any suggestions on 2 cheaper primes? one for wider vlogging (20-30mm maybe?) and one for interviews (50-85mm?) Any suggestions with the 3 best lenses i am looking for at a cheaper price but with good autofocus
why not increase the ISO and EXPOSURE level to gain more light
you should be shooting RAW. While looking at the fine JPEG results off the camera isnt a terrible way to compare pictures, it's not truly accurate. one could make a better comparison by the results attainable through processing RAW.
Great video, great comparison. I’ve had my eye on the 18-105mm for sony for awhile, mostly because it’s versatile and inexpensive
Hi, what microphone did you use while you were filming the video?
I was thinking about getting the 35 for wider shoots would it be great for that???
After your review I bought the 18 to 105 lens and a6500.This will be my only lens also my first lens for videos. I have switched to interchangeable lens system recently. I own a RX10 MK3.
Excuse me
May i ask your opinion?
So, i just bought sony a6000 (body only) and want to choose lens for the needs of portrait, traveling and video.
Whether sony lens E 35mm f / 1.8 OSS match with that?
And also i have 10-18mm canon lens that i want to pair with sony camera, what brand adapter that could possibly match and quickly respond to autofocus
and whether the result is good ?
I hope ur answer could help me
Thank you so much
This is a rather mute comparison since you shot mostly low light gray/winter scenes with an f4 lens. It doesn't give a fair comparison. Obviously the aperture limitations can't keep up on the f4.
No kidding... my last decision making searches (camera, lens, gimbal) , your videos show up in google... You really understand the beginners :)
Which of those lenses would you recommend strict for videomaking with Sony A6000?
mkay If you don't have a kit lens, the 18-105. If you have a kit lens, get the 35mm.
I'm really curious how the kit lens stacks up against the 35mm 1.8. i just got the a6000 with the kit lens and am curious to seee on what I'm missing out on. if you get a chance, can you do a comparison. thanks
Billy Cool He already did. Check his channel.
There's no comparison -- the 35 prime is significantly sharper and faster. Unless you'll REALLY miss the range variety on the 16-50, the 35 would be a HUGE upgrade.
FYI--- Your short links to amazon are expired on a TON of your videos! Great stuff, but you should get a better solution to the links in the "About" section
Thanks for the heads up! Which ones? I just went through and tested all of them and they seem to work.
Pointless comparison for those that know camera gear. For the uneducated, however, this is great video. Godspeed!
Great video, really helped a lot. Can you do a video comparison of 16-70 f4 vs 18-105, and also 18-105 vs 15-200. Thanks and keep up the great work!
You have a video 18-105mm vs 50mm 1.8 ??
