Some local business was ewasting 22 of those things awhile back. I asked if I could have them and they said sure. They ended up being i7-9700, 32gb memory, 1tb m.2 drives. I ran diagnostics on each and each passed (they had just been wiped). I ended up giving 5 of them to friends/family and donated the rest.
I love how we are at the point it's incredibly easy to make your own retro console with a little bit of work and cash. I use an Apple TV, 150 bucks for a small box that sips power but can run PS1 and N64 easily. Plus you still get all the streaming TV and movie stuff and no ads.
with 8GB and that size a hard drive, this can also be used as a standalone brain for music production, whether in studio or live. you can definitely use it as a main cheap rig, but my idea is to focus on one main component (say Omnisphere) and only have that, using audio interfaces and MIDI sequencing to have it all connect together. for about 80-90 bucks this could be a pretty damn good deal if you know what youre doing

Hi I'm really new to this type of thing but I recently bought and setup a hp elite desk G2 mini and it's great What type of performance boost should I expect from upgrading the ram?
For a I5 4590T I'd would to get it on eBay instead, and get it for under $50. If your going to shop Amazon the HP EliteDesk 705 G4 with the Ryzen 2400GE is just 15 to 20 dollars more than this model, but you would get way better performance for PS2, X-Box, and other harder to run emulators plus a SSD. The only downside is the SSD is smaller at only 256GB.
@@philmcrackinnow Yes. SSD size affects speed of drive and lifespan based on the amount/array of memory chips. I also recommend Ryzen 2000 series for better ps2/og xbox compatibility. Intel HD graphics only handles Dreamcast and downward perfectly. The only reason DC/older games wouldn't work properly on integrated graphics is emu compatibility. Can't beat the price point though.
This is a great video! I watched it from beginning to end just in case of some new information. Lol. I grabbed a Prodesk 800 G2 16gb ram with 240gb SSD from the previous video. I set it up with Batocera and flashed it straight to SSD and now it’s basically my retro gaming “console.” I absolutely love it! I had it for 10 months now. The only “down side” is I can’t stop adding games! Lol. As of now I have 14,000+ games. 🤦🏻♂️ 😂😂😂
The fact that it can run most emulators now is crazy you couldn't dare about 3 to 5 years ago now I can imagine with the Ryzen 5 HP mini can do!! Great stuff as always might make me dig out my hp and try something with Batocera
I just got the 705 G4 with the R5 2400G. i am really amazed at how fast it boots up. PS2 and Wii/Gamecube games run very well on it. I only have 8 GB of ram on it running on single channel. Fallout 3, Bloodstained, RE5 and 6, The Evil Within run just fine. I should get another stick of ram sometime this week and I could try Fallout 4 and Control to see how those games run.
Previous video had me grab one of these. Prodesk 600 g2 with i5-6500t, 16 gb ram… no hdd. Did a build, sold to my friend and got an i7 version with 32gb and 1tb nvme and 1ssd. Wasn’t 70 but not bad all in
Great video! I love seeing demos on these type of pcs. I think setting something like this up with a smaller game collection is a great idea. Something others can just turn on and play. They dont have to scroll through 1000s of games and tweak controller configurations.
I have a HP ProDesk G3 600 I got from a friend that I've been using for Emulation/Minecraft Bedrock Server. I added a 2nd 8GB Ram Stick to upgrade it 16GB and then I upgraded the cpu to an i7 7700T. I also installed a 500GB NVMe SSD and a Intel WiFi 6E/Bluetooth 5.2 module in it. Its been great. Had the thing for about a year. Then this week my friend found out that the same business he got the G3's from is getting rid of all their HP EliteDesk G4 800 units. This time I'm going to take 2 of the G4's off my friend and will send the G3 to my brother. Really excited for the new units and they should already have an i7 8700T in it, so I won't need upgrade the CPU this time.
I did something similar with an old pc from my firm (got an i5 7500 with 8gb and and 500gb ssd for 50€ a couple of years ago) and installed garuda on it. works great for retro games or non demanding games in my giant steam pile of shame 😁but of course its no eyecatcher for the living room. That said I have a Steam Deck, and put all my NES SNES MegaDrive Roms there and thats really great.
I did this, but without Batocera. When Chromecast with Google TV broke side-loading files through the File Explorer, I was done with the CC. I got a Lenovo Thinkcentre with a Ryzen 5/16GB of RAM, installed Debian, and bought a Rii i4 controller to pair with my DS4. Took a bit to find a happy middle ground with controls, especially for my fiancé, but the Rii i4 is kinda where I found it. It's my full HTPC/set-top box replacement. Steam Link, Geforce Now, Xbox Cloud Gaming, emulators, and even low-end Steam games. Plus a web browser and Plex. I won't go back, lol.
I would recommend spending the few extra bucks and get the 6500T version as it will play switch and for like 20 bucks you get ddr4 instead of the ddr3 and a M.2 slot
Due to the fact that I only play retro games on my crt plugged into a surround sound system to give me that true arcade experience. I would have to get myself a really high-end hdmi to composite/component adapter. This is exactly why I still use my wii for emulation. BUT,I realize that with this pc, it would for sure be able to outperform it hands down. Just subbed :)
How does this play games without a graphics card? I have a small form factor hp desktop pc. Using the on board graphics it struggles with ps2 and wii/gamecube. I have 12GB of dual channel Ram installed. Core i5 2400
I've been seeing cheaper than this for quad core AMD chips, sometimes with a 128GB SSD. More recent models also. I'd recommend those if you want a better Steam machine due to the GPU. It also would allow higher res in emulators, though Dolphin will probably need more CPU, which is where Intel is better. I think this may have issues with PPSSPP, while AMD should run better.
I would recommend upgrading to a 1tb ssd myself. I would add 55 for a ssd maybe I will pick on up and flim a video of me turning one in to a emulation machine with a ssd upgrade
Thanks for showing us this. I have some friendly suggestions/input. The keyboard you referenced is not mechanical, it's membrane, huge difference between the two. The other is that the audio is pretty brutal from the PC, so I'd suggest using some external speakers in the future or doing direct HDMI capture. The camera quality for everything else is top notch, and that would match the same level of quality in the video. Keep up the good work!
I would argue this: All keyboards are "mechanical." It's a mechanical process that depresses a carbon-contact through a rubber dome. That's a mechanical process.

Well worth the difference, depending on what you want to run. G1 is 4th gen cpu, G2 is 6th gen, and G3 is either 6th or 7th gen. In addition to improved cpu performance, the integrated graphics also improve significantly. (about +25% better from 4th gen to 6th, and about 15% better from 6th to 7th) Instead of batocera, I'm running windows and retrobat, so I can also run pc games that play nice with integrated graphics. Is it worth it to get the i7 model with 32 GB of RAM? It's around 190 but if I could play like PS3 and PS4 along with Xbox One and Xbox 360 I think it would be worth it. Can anyone comment on this?
I've had a few of these for batocera emulation. It depends what model i7. I7 6700T can play basic 2d ps3 games like sf4, double dragon neon. You can also play basic some switch games like mario kart. You get similar performance with i7 8700T. Anything more then it's best to get a gpu. I purchased a lenovo m720q which has a pcie slot for a lp gpu. I have a T1000 in it. You can also put a 6400 in it. If u want to play more intensive 3d games
You get the same experience as Batocera but easier to access games and transfer games and if you accidentally delete a game or a folder your not gonna feel a gut punch because once you delete something in Batocera it's gone unlike Windows where it just goes to the recycle bin and can get a full setup with custom themes as well.
The price changes pretty significantly on these mini PCs. When a big company dumps their gear, there's a glut and it drives the price down for a short while. I picked up the same unit as in the video, but gen 3 with a better cpu, for about the same $ earlier this year. I'd also recommend against looking for a specific model. It's better to search for the cpu you want and the word "mini" (e.g. "i5 7500t mini") so you can see where the surplus is.
I've had halo run well on here can't say I've tried the others though. That's where you'll start to see pushback though so for sure. That's as far as you can push this guy but for the price it's to be expected.
And people think that AI is not the future of game development. If a $77 computer can emulate all the old classics, a $20,000 GPU is definately going to be able CREATE all the old classics on the fly.
Arf....in fact xbox games can run bad, x360 not at all and ps3 neither. Its hard on WiiU too (fps drops or freeze) with AAA games. I have the g4. But the rest runs well.
What did you expect of a mini pc with no graphics card? There is only so much an integraded gpu can handle. Anything older than ps2 should run without an effort.
Put one of these in my arcade cab and its now a retro game powerhouse. Plays everything all the way up to Wii U. Very happy with it for the price

Damn they always increase it as demand increases
in venezuela that pc price is usd $200 :'(
Emulation station desktop edition way better then batocera.
You get the same experience as Batocera but easier to access games and transfer games and if you accidentally delete a game or a folder your not gonna feel a gut punch because once you delete something in Batocera it's gone unlike Windows where it just goes to the recycle bin and can get a full setup with custom themes as well.
@@yinyangg87not true batocera had a recycling bin to
"Way better" provides 0 arguments as to why...
Picked up a g2 mini for 100 aud and its so worth it 😊🎉
What Is This Called Bro?
Hp elitedesk 800 g1
@@OfficialChaseBrogan Thanks Bro
Is a HP Elitedesk 705 g1 good to use for batocera?
Manage your expectations. Those AMD A series APUs are pretty awful outside of basic computer usage.
It’s extremely convenient that my work is throwing dozens of these away
Very cool. I think i have an i core 7 dell I dont use anymore. I may just convert it.
......price jumped
The price changes pretty significantly on these mini PCs. When a big company dumps their gear, there's a glut and it drives the price down for a short while. I picked up the same unit as in the video, but gen 3 with a better cpu, for about the same $ earlier this year.
I'd also recommend against looking for a specific model. It's better to search for the cpu you want and the word "mini" (e.g. "i5 7500t mini") so you can see where the surplus is.
Cool!
How does it play Need for Speed Most Wanted lol
It's not plug and play ready so it's not for me.
Why did the games sound like donkey 💩??? Sounded broken and like half the music was missing
just know this won't play a lot of ps2 or xbox games very well. Fable, Halo 2, Dark Alliance 2, games like this will not run worth a flying duck
Sure I can't wait to play super Mario bros with 3 legs and 19 fingers
Can I jusbuy 5his off you 🙏🏽😅
They went up $10 LOL
Arf....in fact xbox games can run bad, x360 not at all and ps3 neither. Its hard on WiiU too (fps drops or freeze) with AAA games.
I have the g4.
But the rest runs well.
What did you expect of a mini pc with no graphics card? There is only so much an integraded gpu can handle. Anything older than ps2 should run without an effort.
@retrogamingguy if you build one with all the games included, I can purchase it for $100
@jasekroger I don't own another computer to download the games into hard drive
This isn't a console. ;)
