I am from Canada and just came across your channel. I think living a lifestyle where a person can slow down and enjoy it is what a lot of people strive for. Thanks for sharing your story. Wishing you all the best.
People wanting to live like this guy need to understand that having a house in a remote area is like a full time job. This guy is lucky to be able to work from home and spend a lot of time there. If you work full time and need to commute somewhere for your job it becomes like having two jobs. In the end it is rewarding. But it's hard. You see a burning wood-stove and think how nice. You don't think about the reality of being hungry and coming back home from an exhausting day at work at 6pm to a cold cabin and having to light up that wood-stove.
If you have a year arround heat insulated house with a madonry chimney you fire it up in the morning for 1-2 hours and it keep the house warm and they you fire it up in the evening for a few hours again, it becomes a habbit pretty quick, but a cabin or house with only summer spring/autumn capability your in for a rougher ride and if there is no masonry chimney but a cheat metal chimney you started with a ignorant attitude to ignore the nature, when you understand what makes it a favourable place to stay in to make your life quality high, just don't ignore the knowledge that people collected through history, it's not neccesary to go modern but to have the idea of reinvent the wheel again isn't a good idea, so check things up and fix it in spring-summet-autumn, the wintertime days are short, and you gonna spend most time of a day when the darkness falls inside your "castle" so make it a pleasure for thoughts to be there, be friendly to neighbours even if you don't have much common with them you can cooperate with them to get things work for you to, if you help them the chance they help you with something else or share a little of the things you helped them with, but also they if they are stationary from the area they have knowledge that you want to learn from, everything from get the firewood out from the forrest (wintertime job) to cut it and split it (Spring time) and to det it and put it in where you store it (early Summer) there is a reason why they do certain jobs at certain times of the year learn why to get a deeper connection to nature and the place you live in, and experience the pure joy of see what your efforts gives back to you. And you don't need to be a vlogger or a socialmedia "star" to enjoy it ,you can find other ways to finance it.
@@yammie1536 Best time of the year to cut it is winter because it's the time of the year trees has suck up least water in them, then cut them and take them home you let the snow and ice on them melt, so they starts to dry on the outside but you don't cut them firesize and split them untill spring when in the period late spring early summer is where they dry outside by sun and warm winds that period use to be warm and dry, then before midsummer you can take it inside or build stacks on a floor capable to ventilate from under or something that isn't directly on the ground and put a roof over it so it doesn't start to suck up some water into it in the summer rains, best firewood you can get actually have to sit over one year if you have space for it to store it, but mostly people use it the winter after, Birch is the best firewood it gives most heat and leaves least soot in the chimney and burns rather silently but you can variate with other types of tree, Pine and Spruce gives less heat burns faster and makes much more noice (probably the resins) and sends sparkles out in the air if you have an open fireplace, some old Pine gets hardened with tar and is called (Tjärved, Fetved = Tarwood, Fatwood) inside and burns really good but is best to use on open fires outside because it make so much tar inside the chimneys that it can cause (if used much it certainly will) fires inside the chimney that sends sparkles outside and can destroy the chimney because of the heat it creates, but it makes perfect splitted starter sticks together with birchbark a perfect starter combination but don't use it as regular firewood, you can also use cones as firewood also for an short period but they create an to intense heat and is not recomended to do over a longer time, the Birch Bark can be ripped of and is the best thing to start a fire with if you bad made some splitted wood to put over it when you starts a fire no extra substanses is needed if you learn that, just make sure you collect as much Birch Bark as you can (it's the brown leathery part under the white skin) when taking in the firewood or select the right pieces when you go out to fill up thats up to you how you do you can rop it in smaller pieces, you actually don't need so much of it to start the fire, remember there is difference between a masonry chimney and a metal uppe chimney, a masonry chimney takes some time to heat up and you have to take it easy so you don't fire extremly hot at once det ut have a while with slow fire in the beginning so you don't crack it, but a masonry chimney will rewards you later by sleeping the heat long after the fire is out, a metal pipe chimney is easier to fire and what up fast but don't hold the heat especially long after the fire is out so it can create colder periods between you're giving it up, masonry chimneys is probably more comfortable when you learn to how to use them like you make fire once or twice a day, metal pipe chimneys you probably needs to fire up more often and create more direct heat with.
This is something to aspire to, and reminds me of the move I made to the north of Scotland some years ago. However, it is worth bearing in mind that Kalle continues to live within the industrialised system from which he seeks escape. That system provides; rule of law and the means to enforce it, so he doesn’t have to post a guard 24 hours a day to protect his land, sophisticated health care which, although it may not be needed now, will be needed at some stage, the internet which allowed the posting of this video, and a market of people with sufficient discretionary income to provide monthly contributions via Patreon. So congratulations to the many millions of people that continue to live the urban industrial life that makes all this support possible. I think one of the biggest challenges we face is how to make this type of life possible for many more people without crashing the support system that we all rely on (even those who consider ourselves “self-sufficient”). Or maybe a better question is; how do we re-shape the system so that it continues to provide its benefits while minimising damage to the environment, climate and the mental and physical well-being of those within it? Tough challenge. Meanwhile Kalle and those like him are providing a good illustration of what’s possible IF we can square that circle.👍
I always chuckle when Scots think northern Scotland is comparable to northern Sweden. Look at a map and you'll see that the most northerly tip of Scotland barely reaches Stockholm. Add another entire UK length of longitude landmass from there and you still won't hit the tip of northern Sweden. The harshest Scottish winter is a balmy spring day in northern Sweden. Lol!!!!

Your intro had me hooked right away. I currently feel this exhaustion working and living in San Francisco Bay Area, CA. Congrats! My you inspire the rest of us to get out of our ruts.
Apologies for replying a year later, if you see this, I grew up in that area. At 18 I took off and eventually found homes in the Santa Cruz mountains and San Lorenzo Valley, Carmel, I'd always run to the forests! But that commute and rat race to survive took it's toll on me. Anyways, I'm in Oregon now, and helping my Mum prep her house in Mendocino County area to sell, she's finally getting out of there! The hot, dry weather or actually the 'no weather' has turned me into a lover of storms & snow. I still feel Sweden is calling but I cannot move there yet. Visit hopefully 🥰 Good luck to you & hope your life goes your way!

As my first comment ever, at least on RUclips (best that I can remember)... Than you for nispiring me (at 60) to simply realize how right you are! Rock on!
Glad you had the courage to make the change. My ancestors are from the Skelleftea area and Lapland so this area was what they loved. I hope you make more friends and get running water and heat in the winter.😀
I’m just 13 and I already feel that I don’t belong to where I live. I live in a capital city, but I just really hate it. I don’t have any friends and sometimes I just want ro run away to a forest in a different country, I don’t want to live in hungary. I can’t stand that I need to impress peoples who I don’t even know, worry about things that are not ever affects me and try to be perfect every day. I envy you Kalle! You had the courage to do what the rest of us only dream of. Many of us are sick of our consumerist society and its shallow living, working mindless jobs in faceless cubicles, grudgingly clawing our way from week to week......there is something heavenly, natural, and humane in the way you live, an unhurried life, peaceful, free from our relentless time pressure and endless schedules, unburden from the expectations of society, a life between you, nature, and God. It may not be easy, but it clearly speaks to you heart. Wishing you all the best....;)

This is beautiful and inspiring. Question - and I don't ask this critically, but out of curiosity. How was putting in a woodstove not your #1 priority? I live in Canada which has similar winters to Sweden, and when we built our cabin, the woodstove went in even before the bed, with every discretionary hour spent chopping and stacking wood (I'm doing that today). I'm just asking out of curiosity, since you could have died. Anyone else considering this lifestyle, this needs to be as much a priority as how you'll get water - and arguably, cold can kill you faster than a lack of water. Beautiful cabin, and your companion looks weatherproof, as well! Will look forward to following you.
@@vader6936 Yeah fair, yet he clearly thought through a lot of other practical problems in a sensible manner. It just seemed so predictable! Surely you make a list of things that need buying or addressing, and forgetting about heat - in Sweden; in winter?! - seems beyond bizarre!
@@Lionforaday Bruh that was my first thought as well (Norwegian/Finn here). "You moved in the winter?? It didn't even have a fireplace/stove??". "he's from a bigger city" Nah man, Scandinavians are acutely aware of what a fireplace is and that winters get cold. I might also sound super cynical and a huge party pooper but "here's my 10 minute video of slow-motion b-roll and inspirational music talking about the simple life and finding myself" with the full list of social media, is such a big city person thing to do. That said, I'm pro de-centralising. There's just no need to sound so douchey about it.
@@GreenMonkeyToaster I kind of agree with you! There's a veritable army of people making "careers" these days from just having people "follow" them. I do get that it's nice for others to be able to share in a lifestyle they don't feel able to adopt, but there are times when it can seem disingenuous. Also, I'm astounded by the number of people "going off-grid" who aren't handy in the slightest - if you have to hire people to do everything for you, you're not "self-reliant" - indeed, you're heavily reliant! and on others who've taken the time to learn the skills. I'm a woman (despite my profile pic) and there's nothing sexier to me than a man that can do shit! Anyone who has to go on craigslist to find someone to hang the flat-screen? Not-sexy!
Why don't you have solar panels..? 🤔 There are new ones coming out that will work in northern part of Sweden as well. Some secondhand batteries maybe from hospitals or radiostations (they use to renew equipment). Another person had batyerie from electric car that was in accident.. Examples i mentioned are from 2 persons in southern part of Sweden (Skåne, Småland) and they have been living completely of grid for many years. There are groups on some social media that can help out with advice & suggestions. Blessings & good luck 🙏🕊️💕🌍
I grew up surrounded by nature. If I wasn't climbing in one of so many trees from my paradisiac garden, I could run in 10 minutes to the forest close by. Or, going to the opposite direction, to the river close by our village. The clear sky that I admired curiously every night, before to fall asleep, I've never seen it anywhere. Not because it can't exist this amazing view also in other places, but because I've never had same time, same chances and live in the same conditions anywhere else. To call it ''my home''. Now, many years passed by and I find myself trapped between concrete and steel, money and madness, modern slavery and everything opposite freedom of the human being. I miss myself so much and every time I feel sad about this, I'm watching ytb videos like yours and other wonderful people from Sweden, Canada or some ''corners'' of the world. Good luck with your project and wish you much joy and inspiration!

I left the rat race nearly seven years ago to live the simple life in Bulgaria but my dream has always been to be more remote, in a forest by a lake in Sweden. This is just so inspiring and I can relate to not wanting to be so god damn normal. If you ever want a visit I am always up for new adventures. Hugs from Denmark
Actually, houses in the northen part of Sweden in the middle of nowhere is dirt cheap. Especially if it doesn't have running water or heating. They are as close to free as you can get. So if you have saved perhaps $20k-$30k (which should be do-able on a normal salary) you would probably be able to sustain yourself there for at least a couple of years if you live sparingly. One core issue is that you basically need a car since the distances are so vast and a car cost a lot of money. Also, since you are now a house owner, you need a bunch of stuff that you don't think about when you live in an apartment. For example, you now live in the northen part of sweden where it snows a lot. Good luck with that if you don't have a snow plow. Doing it by hand is basically meaningless if you have a privately owned road. Tools are a necessity since you need to fix basically everything yourself in order to sustain yourself. At last, since you're now a house owner, anything expensive can break at any moment so you want to at least have some money for fixing stuff when they break even if insurance covers most of it. But the main issue is loneliness. Winters in Sweden are very, very dark. Living alone in the middle of nowhere probably will make you depressed sooner or later. Of course, if you have a wife or someone to share this with it could be bearable.
@@herranonym5725 Great points Mackan! Yes, never underestimate the downside of the darkness - and don't do the journey unless you are ready to meet yourself ;) Like everything else, but cubed, it's all about the people in your life. If you have supportive friends and neighbours, transport, and communication, you can make it work.
Your simple life is what many have to endure in 3rd world countries to survive 😚 I moved from the States to my husband's homeland and the first time that I saw a bathroom separated from the main house was here. I know your pain of going without heat, warming water to bath, and running across the courtyard to the outhouse in the freezing rain to go to the restroom. I'm from the Midwest and have lived without heat in the Winters and had to sleep in one room with the family around the fireplace, when the blizzards would hit and no power (or because my parents couldn't afford to pay the gas or electric bills) so we went without and cut wood as you said prior to the Winter and made quilts out of old clothing. Now I understand and use those "life skills" that I hated in my youth so easily here...I enjoy your channel. Thank you for sharing
I will move to my cabin in Norway in November (if all goes well). I'm super excited to get back to nature. I've been living in Spain for the past 12 years. I hope it stays as it is now so we don't have to cancel again.

And you don't need to be a vlogger or a socialmedia "star" to enjoy it ,you can find other ways to finance it.
if you're on your own especially regarding kids all this must be easy peasy
@@anderspersson7084 Why is it that the firewood gets collected and split during different seasons as you explained, is it easier to work with?
@@yammie1536
Best time of the year to cut it is winter because it's the time of the year trees has suck up least water in them, then cut them and take them home you let the snow and ice on them melt, so they starts to dry on the outside but you don't cut them firesize and split them untill spring when in the period late spring early summer is where they dry outside by sun and warm winds that period use to be warm and dry, then before midsummer you can take it inside or build stacks on a floor capable to ventilate from under or something that isn't directly on the ground and put a roof over it so it doesn't start to suck up some water into it in the summer rains, best firewood you can get actually have to sit over one year if you have space for it to store it, but mostly people use it the winter after, Birch is the best firewood it gives most heat and leaves least soot in the chimney and burns rather silently but you can variate with other types of tree, Pine and Spruce gives less heat burns faster and makes much more noice (probably the resins) and sends sparkles out in the air if you have an open fireplace, some old Pine gets hardened with tar and is called (Tjärved, Fetved = Tarwood, Fatwood) inside and burns really good but is best to use on open fires outside because it make so much tar inside the chimneys that it can cause (if used much it certainly will) fires inside the chimney that sends sparkles outside and can destroy the chimney because of the heat it creates, but it makes perfect splitted starter sticks together with birchbark a perfect starter combination but don't use it as regular firewood, you can also use cones as firewood also for an short period but they create an to intense heat and is not recomended to do over a longer time, the Birch Bark can be ripped of and is the best thing to start a fire with if you bad made some splitted wood to put over it when you starts a fire no extra substanses is needed if you learn that, just make sure you collect as much Birch Bark as you can (it's the brown leathery part under the white skin) when taking in the firewood or select the right pieces when you go out to fill up thats up to you how you do you can rop it in smaller pieces, you actually don't need so much of it to start the fire, remember there is difference between a masonry chimney and a metal uppe chimney, a masonry chimney takes some time to heat up and you have to take it easy so you don't fire extremly hot at once det ut have a while with slow fire in the beginning so you don't crack it, but a masonry chimney will rewards you later by sleeping the heat long after the fire is out, a metal pipe chimney is easier to fire and what up fast but don't hold the heat especially long after the fire is out so it can create colder periods between you're giving it up, masonry chimneys is probably more comfortable when you learn to how to use them like you make fire once or twice a day, metal pipe chimneys you probably needs to fire up more often and create more direct heat with.
yeah, i wouldn't do this unless i could work from home. Good comment

Was kinda cringey hearing the direct quote tbh
Exactly, well said.
The system provides .. spot on sir.

Your courageous move to follow your dream and live simply and beautifully and ecologically is really speaking to my soul at the moment. I cherish a similar dream here in Ireland. Thanks for sharing your lessons and experiences.

Every time I watch your videos it just feels like I see my home, I mean like at a forest in Sweden at a small cabin living a life what is not about impressing random peoples every day, when I can’t even impress myself or figure out who I am... I hope one day I can move to a place like where you live.

I know that feeling, just know you're not alone ❤ I'm 32 years old, and I still don't know who I am, and I hope I never find out, because that keeps me searching 😊
I always love watching this life style but I grew up without central air and heat.. no hot water... I miss that life but i love hot water 😂😂

Probably because he’s from a bigger city and didn’t think about it before he almost froze to death
Not-sexy!
@@GreenMonkeyToaster I think it is stupid to generalize like this "Scandinavians are acutely aware"
Hope you get to spend some time with nature

This is just so inspiring and I can relate to not wanting to be so god damn normal. If you ever want a visit I am always up for new adventures. Hugs from Denmark
Stockholm and America sound alike.
This seems like the perfect dream yet so unattainable at the same time.
Yes, never underestimate the downside of the darkness - and don't do the journey unless you are ready to meet yourself ;)
Like everything else, but cubed, it's all about the people in your life.

I'm happy you notice that 😊 I've invested almost all my money in my passion for film making 😊 I don't know if you have seen it yet, but I just uploaded a new video, I hope you will like that one too 😊

@@adventureisland7049 Why not ??Being in an Indian society we may think it may be hard but not impossible.... I believe one with a great determination can do anything he/she wants with life....
@@prekshalama3241 u r right but my point was if u want to live this lifestyle then our parents don't agree on this ..
Do you live self sufficient? or does you business make enough money to buy needed groceries?
I myself strive to live such live aswell in the future. I'm a mechanical engineer close to the end of my studies, still looking on how to shift my career towards this kind of lifestyle.
We buy some from the store and grow some ourselves 😊 The plan is to expand our garden in the spring to grow even more 😊
