While everyone admired Griffith it was clear from the start that people like him are to be avoided at all costs, and often the same reasons people like a narcissistic person are what make them so horrible to those close to them. They’re appealing and draw you in only to use you for their own gain, and once you’re aware of it you spot people like that right away and you feel crazy for disturbing and disliking them while everybody else admires them. And then it turns out they were in fact horrible to those close to them. Worst thing is that Guts brought out the best of Grifith, it just happens that the best aspects of Griffith are against his ambition for his own kingdom.

The rape scene also further illustrate how Griffith and Guts are different. Guts’s sex scene with Casca was tender, emotional and supportive because they had to work through his issue of aversion to physical contact due to the rape in his childhood. He actually attempts to get casca to stay even before the eclipse, when she's tending to his wounds in the cart and he jumps her, as he's taken notice of guts and casca's relationship and assumes that if he can get casca to stay, he can get guts to stay too. But when Guts offers to stay she tells/reminds him why he can't. It's at that moment that Griffith realizes that the reason Guts left to begin with was to find his own dream, and be considered a friend/equal to him. However, based on his own definition, its Griffith couldn't be considered an equal/friend to guts, as he put guts over his own dream; risking his life for him on multiple occasions, starting as early as their first raid together.
Griffith is the one beneath Guts, not the other way around. Its during the eclipse that we see Griffith actually admit to it, if only to himself, saying that guts is the only one who made him forget his dream.

He suspected guts would not be his sword long before.
Think, why didn't he send Judeau in an assasination mission?
He sent the giant non subtle brute with a giant blade in an ASSASINATION plot. Griffith Sent guts there , because he was already conflicted about Guts wanting to be his equal. Any other Hawk would have done it without questions. But he knew Guts would have doubt. He wanted Guts to be his blade, not his friend. But at the same time he likes Guts. So he " kind of but not exactly" as a friend, ask him to assasinate that man. In reality he wanted guts to do anything for him, And also wanted that man dead. climbing the tower and making love with the princess wasn't Griffith first mistake, it was trying to make guts his dog.
But he never realized this , along with his conversation with the princess, would be what would kickstart his downfall.
Then before the eclipsed he realized Guts would leave again, and this time, he would take Casca, the last chain keeping the Hawks together, with him. Guts (because of Griffith) would end what remained of the Hawks by taking Casca with him.

i think another thing people don’t mention in these videos is griffith regaining power over CASCA, the prime victim.
she has given up on her womanhood and vulnerability in order to be the new leader of the band, and the only time she’s is shown naked or extremely vulnerable and not feeling uncomfortable is with guts. casca can be herself fully with him, not having to worry if he’s convinced by her act.
the moment griffith sacrifices the band, he strips her away from being a leader. then he SA her, not only humiliating her in front of her lover (guts), making her unable to ever look at him again without remembering all the trauma she survived, but corrupted her CHILD.
she was pregnant at the time, and then the baby got ruined by femto.
basically everything that she had (the leadership of the band) or could have (her relationship with guts and bearing their child in the future) was stripped away from her, making her life so painful that her brain regressed not to relive the events of the eclipse again.

I think you have simplified a common argument I have seen over the years into its purest form: Griffith's lust for power is so great that it literally/figuratively destroys the world
I think this is most evident in the chapters since Guts and Co. arrive in Elfhelm, where the results of Griffith's dream on the outside world are more evident. From the very end of Chapter 345, in the conversation between Guts and Gedfring, Gedfring asks what motivated Griffith to reincarnate and transform the world. Guts puts it bluntly; as a survivor and former friend of Griffith, he knows better than anyone else: "He'll have his own kingdom"
What is most significant here is what Gedfring says in response.
"Seizing a kingdom, that does make sense... In this new world of chaos, it's ironic that the root of his tree is like the eye of a storm; a land of calm spiritual power that repels any wicked ethereal bodies. You could say it's the one and only 'kingdom" where people can live in peace and prosperity... To seize a kingdom. No. To establish the only kingdom in the world, he changed the world itself. That's utterly absurd. Any means to achieve his ends, eh?"
That one line from Gedfring, the absurdity of Griffith's dream, I believe illuminates how misguided he became, and that there may be some semblance of conscious, reflection still buried deep within Griffith. He sought his kingdom, he found(ed) his kingdom, and what did he realize upon achieving his dream? It is a cold, dark, and lonely place to inhabit.
"When I wake from the dream, only a vague sense of longing remains... That too will soon disappear... with a single tear, like morning dew".
The love of power is nothing compared to the power of love.
After all, what's the point of having all the power and influence in the world if you destroy the world and people's admiration for you is based on nothing but lies and false images.
    Griffith has nothing

    • @cooperjones7206
      @cooperjones7206 Год назад +9

Very good analysis. I would only argue though that Femto likely has somewhat different motives and goals now then Griffith did.
Note that I’ve separated the two, because Femto is simply the Id of Griffith. He has no remorse, no guilt or any humanity. And what humanity he does express is only from the moonlight boy who shares his body.
(Hence the tear and melancholic speech you quoted.)
Femto’s goals are now whatever the Godhand’s goals are, and I seriously doubt the Godhand has any interest in peacefully preserving humanity in one small kingdom for eternity.
And that’s the interesting part that’s still to come. What is Femto’s true goal now? Will he betray that Godhand And pursue his dream of ruling his own kingdom?
Or will he sacrifice the entire kingdom just like the ancient one that skull knight ruled?

This is somewhat ambiguous to me because on the one hand Guts says that he will fight for Griffith's sake but in the other hand Guts is not doing it for Griffith's dream but for himself, he just wants to fight and swing his sword; the reason why Griffith likes him, because a friend for him is someone who doesn't depend on someone else's dream but in his own. Guts didn't have a dream but did what he wanted and this is why Griffith like him and considered him a friend. Also, evidence for Guts doing what he wants is the constant reprimand he got from Casca during the three years he had been with the Band.
So which is it? He fought for himself or for Griffith's sake or both maybe?

Guts, his second in hand. Took Casca out of his reach, his third in charge. Griffith loves Guts, but hates him for having him love him, because loving him took him away from his dream. Griffith already considered Guts a true friend. He just refused to accept him as such, he wanted the hawks to be his stairway to his dream. And his emotions for Guts ruined that. Yet, he blames Guts for this instead of himself
I always interpreted this as Griffith Psychotic way of getting back at Guts. He knew they were in a relationship. On the other hand. Casca was always like a tool for him. Remember than when they rescued Casca, He sent her to keep Guts Warm.
He's punishing guts, again, using casca as an object. The same way he saved Guts all those years ago. This is why Griffith is true evil. He never considered Casca as anything but a mean to an end. In fact, he always considered everyone but Guts that, i mean he WANTED to think Guts was another pawn in his power game. He wanted to make Guts his pawn. But Guts wanted to be his friend.
And don't forget, Griffith words were the cause of Guts leaving the band. But as always never took accountability for his own lack of control over his own emotions. And the rape of Casca is the sum of all of Griffith worst aspects.

Griffith in a way is a character that slowly looses his mind over the ambitions he has, all the people followed Griffith because they believed he could be a good stair to their dreams, and Griffith on the other hand had the dream to get powerful, and with his high IQ he is able to win battles + he has a extreme luck because he is carrying the red egg. And in the dungeon Griffith lost everything, the only thing left was the dream of controlling guts and Casca.
There is something weird before the eclipse, where Griffith and Casca are in a bandwagon there is some movement, and then Casca goes out really weirded out, i think that is 100% Griffith trying to have sex with Casca, and Casca rejecting him, then when he becomes one of the apostles he just does what he wanted from the start.

He took Casca, destroyed their new sanctuary, and rendered Guts's year-long efforts useless.
Griffith simply can't let it go.
And that just might be the key to his eventual downfall.

So I’m just getting started with the manga (deluxe editions 1&2), and haven’t seen the original anime, but the newer version that was recently on Netflix. However, I think I have one more reason why Griff attacked Casca:
After Griff’s rescue, while Guts and Casca are keeping Griff hidden from the rest of the Hawk band in side the wagon, Casca is in there with Griff alone, sharing her feelings. At that point, Griff lunges at Casca, and starts thrusting his hips at her. Casca at this point both verbally and physically rejects Griff, literally holding him up and off her as he’s so frail by then. Grief’s later action is him taking what she denied him before. It’s much simpler than your theory, but it is plausible.

You see him in constant pain when he's alone. The "dream" was the only thing to propel him forward. Guts made him forget his pain and suffering, forget how many died to make that come true. When a friend Griffith loved, which loving someone is something he hadn't allowed himself to do since the beginning, left him alone with that heavy burden returning, he lost his mind and slept with the princess. Griffith is human. His past abuse drove him into insanity and when he called on the belheit, he truly became evil. A very interesting point of view, indeed. And a cold reminder of how people act when they see other persons as tools, or their property. I have experienced that in my family, and more recently, in a sort of love triangle, between a girlfriend, a friend of her, and me. He was in love with her, tried to tell her, and was anxious about not being able to, or being rejected. At the same time, he saw me as someone he couldn't compete with, in his own opinion. At first he ignored me, but when he saw I had feelings for that girlfriend too, he became mad and angry at me and saw me as a rival. She realized that, and bravely tried to appease both of us, because she feared that violence could come quickly. I feel sorry for her, because she really loved both of us, but also had to "lie" to both of us in order to avoid rivalry.

I've wrote down this comment before I watched this video, to share my opinion. In my opinion, the main reason why Griffith did such thing it's to get to Guts. Grifith newer showed the interest towards Casca that can be define as a romantic interest, so he didn't do it out of jealosy or lust or any other reason that can be dictated by "love" in its turned form. The intention of this deed of his had only one purpose: show Guts that he still has a control over him by taking someone/something that was close and dear to Guts. Casca is an embodiment of a twisted letter in this situation.

I remember seeing that somewhere.
Or, maybe it's a combination of all of those answers in one. And if that is the case, the person Griffith became is truly one of the most evil bastards ever made. Rest in peace miura.

Griffith had differentiated guts from the other soldiers since the beginning but guts just didnt see it. Its probably why he was so upset when guts left as he couldnt see his reason for this action.

I hated Griffith the moment I saw him. I’m reading blind right now but I hated that smug, narcissistic bastard the moment he was introduced.
While everyone admired Griffith it was clear from the start that people like him are to be avoided at all costs, and often the same reasons people like a narcissistic person are what make them so horrible to those close to them. They’re appealing and draw you in only to use you for their own gain, and once you’re aware of it you spot people like that right away and you feel crazy for distrusting and disliking them while everybody else admires them. And then it turns out they were in fact horrible to those close to them. I was raised by a narcissistic dad, and once you learn the signs you can spot them immediately in those that show them so I knew to hate Griffith.

Light thinks he's more capable than most (which isn't incorrect as he's super smart). He didn't think he deserves more than anybody else for free, but thought that nobody could stop him from using his skills to get what he wanted.
Griffith however I despise on a personal level because it was immediately obvious that he values himself over everybody else and doesn't see others as people but just tools to achieve what he wants just like any other narcissist.
So when they say "God of the new world" Light means he'll climb there using his wits and skills, while Griffith wants to get there by manipulating people to further his own agenda. Sure Light manipulates Misa but that's one person and he thinks he's doing it for the greater good, while Griffith has no concern for others and manipulates everyone and everything around him.

And that what he did is nothing but now that he felt that they had abandoned him, so when Gates left him, he decided to go to the queen to throw himself in captivity, because it is the only idea that will return Gates to work under his banner. • @seacrystal6189
    @seacrystal6189 Год назад +2

I feel like a lot of Berserk fans oversimplify Griffith's character. He is not simply a narcisistic abuser who wanted to control people. Yes, he is now undoubtedly evil, I'm not trying to argue with that, I'm just saying that he was a human character with human emotions
He didn't love Guts because he saw him as a toy, it was the exact opposite. He is the only one he truly trusted and could let his guard around. And yes, he was deeply in love with him. Griffith being gay is blatant, I don't know why it's even debated. He was immediatelly infatuated the moment he saw Guts, much to Casca's frustration. She points out multiple times how Griffith is obsessed with Guts, constantly makes exceptions for him, keeps him in the army despite not sticking to plans and values him much more than Casca, despite her being much more loyal to him for much longer. Griffith is a man who carefully plans everything in his life, yet it is only with Guts when he lets his emotions get the best of him. Guts even asks him why and he replies with "Do I really need a reason to put myself in harms way because of you?". Griffith, the meticilous planner with great ambitious for the future, was willing to throw his life away for this man!
Also, Griffith is not gay because he slept with that disgusting nobleman at all - he did that because of money and no other reason, it had nothing to do with his sexuality, and it traumatized him. It was the only time he used sex as an exchange. When he had a breakdown in the river he showed how guilty he felt for sacrificing people for the sake of his dream and how it was about time he got his own hands dirty. However, what he said was that they "chose" to die for the sake of his dream, the same way he "chose" to sleep with that nobleman. This was nothing but coping, a lie he tried to make himself believe. He felt immensely guilty
What he felt when Guts left him was simply heartbreak. Yes, he was flirting with the princess for the sake of power, but him coming into her bedroom immediately after Guts left him was anything but a calculated decision. It was a way to cope with loosing Guts. He literally thought about him while fucking Charlette. Once again, his feelings for Guts made him act irrationally
He also did truly care about the band of the hawk. Maybe not as much as he cared for Guts specifically, but remember, sacrifices for the eclipse need to be people one deeply cares about. Not just any person will work
And now we get to Casca... He saw Casca like any other of his soliders. He wasn't at all interested in her, nor did he care about her advances. The reason he raped her is simply because he wanted to hurt Guts. He was jelaous, and wanted revenge cause he left him. It wasn't about Casca at all

    • @djx7134
      @djx7134 Год назад

Griffith loves pussy too much to be straight up gay. He's bi, one hundo. Or was. Now he's just a demon that probably fucks Charlotte just to keep her satisfied but otherwise couldn't care less.
Also, you're wrong about Casca. It may have been 90% about Guts, but in the manga he also expressed dismay that Casca had fallen for Guts and her worship of him (Griffith) had turned to pity. Raping Casca was also meant to reestablish control over her.

When I think about that horrible act Griffith done to casca , I think we should too remember that he was femto ( all the things im gonna say is not for excuse him or relieve him of responsibility)
Like remember the scene where guts start to loose his mine too and just bite casca's chest like it was a big sandwich,
What Im trying to say Its that for me when I read the manga I really had the feeling that when he made the sort of pact /sacrifice , he split he's person in 2 , the worst part in him (femto) that represente the worst demon a human can have (like all the other apostle) and he's sort of "pure" part, that part that show in others dreams or that help other and all... And again I felt like in the manga , If you became on apostle or made a pact with evil and all those shit , the little demons inside you ( that every human have ) is ready to become real , like it happen for a moment for guts when he did that to casca and was about to become berserk.
I think theres the fantasy part too that people forget to talk about , and about all the scene where Griffith show actually real emotions , not a lot but still enough for me to think hes more than just a psycopath , or i think its even harder than that.
Idk If i talk properly cause My english is bad but hopes so , still Griffith is great villain.

I was mourning Miura's death, and thought of Berserk. A question came to mind: why did Grifith sacrificed all the band? My answer was that he wanted to survive. What was wrong with him? He was destroyed under torture.
Why was he tortured? He slept with the monarch's daughter. Why did he do such a reckless act? He loved Guts, but Guts had fought him and was finally allowed to leave (Grifith said you shall leave only if you beat me in a sword fight.) It was a sudden outburst of emotions, perhaps losing control over Guts. Or maybe he loved Guts so much. Either way, the event hurt him so much that he sacrificed the whole band without a moment's thought.
This is causality, and I love it.

Short and precise. I would like to believe that this is what Muira had in mind when building the character of Griffith. The intended ending (365) illustrates that your take on Guts and Grifiths relationship is truly how it’s intended to be perceived by the readers.
    (Chapter 350 and beyond spoilers.)
Throughout Guts journey with Casca and the others, Guts slowly started to not care much about revenge and realize that Casca and his peers are what truly matter. This is the point were Griffith started to loose control over Guts. Just as Cascas sanity was restored, giving the chance for Guts to rebuilt his relationship with Casca, Griffith shows up. By taking away Casca from Guts, Griffith demonstrated to Guts that he is still his master. That everything Guts tries to achieve fails because because it isn’t by Griffiths commands/wishes.
I love your take on their relationship, the only objective take in my eyes lol.
