Short version: Casca became Elaine because Casca herself couldn't comprehend the loss, the trauma, and the suffering all happening to her at once, at the hands of the one they never should have trusted.
So she hid within herself and let her body take over on auto-pilot, as if it had a mind of its own. A mind that didn't recognize Guts.
I suppose her idolizing Grifith and seeing her as a protector a holy image of a perfect man and him violating her, really made casca loose her mind

it’s often very common for people that had extreme trauma (especially sexual assault victims) to forget that trauma. It’s too much for the brain to process so it forgets… unfortunately, in order to heal from that trauma you have to remember it
It could lead to split personality disorder but it mostly comes from children with bad childhoods
I disagree. If the trauma is so hard that the brain has "forgoten" it, and the person can function normally, it's better to leave it as such rather than forcing a person to keep remembering the traumatic event in hopes he or she can rationalize it and move on. Some things are just too much to handle for some people and the brain already has evolved some natural mechanisms to coep with them.

Thaaaank you!!! Finaly there is a video that clears up Casca's emotions towards Griffith and his violent actions. Fans used to make Casca dirty saying she loved Griffith and betrayed Guts because she "enjoyed" the abuse. I got tired debating with those idiots proving obvious facts: Casca suffered the most of Griffith's actions! She lost fer comrades that were her one and only family, her faith in Griffith, the man she admired the most, her future with Guts and dignity. Sure, Guts suffered greatly but the abandoning Griffith and the Band one year ago and finding new meaning in life - his sword - saved him. Casca didn't have any meaning but the Band of the Hawk, faith in Griffith and love and respect of Guts. And Griffith took everything from her.Even if she was in her mind she would probably commit suicide because she felt ashamed and broken. She is such a tragic character, it is so frustrating how fans still think she betrayed or will betray Guts, her lover.

Just one demon? I seem to recall like three dozen of them in the manga.
Casca has been with the band of the hawks since she was a child. They are family to her and for an entire year before the eclispe, their livilhoods depended on her. All the decisions she made to evade capture and protect her band of the hawks leaves her worn out, exhausted and stressed. Guts provides some solace upon his return which helps her mental state get better and relieves her of her burden a little. Then the eclipse happens and everyone she's loved and has tried so hard to protect is dying in front of her and she is helpless. She does'nt know whats happening and to make it worse she is surrounded by horrors beyond human comprehension after everyone is dead. At this point she does'nt know or understand that griffith betrayed her so its all happening too fast. The next thing she sees is the man she has idolized nearly all her life do the worst possible thing to her. He does the exact same thing he saved her from back then. The very reason Casca decided to fight back against the cruelty she faces and admire griffith for. She can probably hear guts screaming and shouting in the background. Its everything all at once crashing down on her and she is absolutely powerless to do anything. She has lost all the things she's loved, admired, trusted and cared for. Its no wonder she lost her mind.
2:05 I personally believe that he was trying to comfort her at that time when he was still human. He was always able to comfort her by just giving her his hand but was too weak to do that at the time so he had just collapsed over her. nah but what he did during the eclipse was still messed up

In a single paragraph: An enormous trauma, caused by one of the people he most idolized, supported the most, followed, risked his life for him, sided with him, supported his ideas and ideals and even helped and protected him, both in his happiest and lowest moments in the past and that he did to her, in front of the person he truly loved the most, the most horrible and unimaginable thing possible just for power, throwing everything away, in addition to his confidence and ruining his life.
Casca would've joined Guts on his Apostle Hunt mission without and be just as violent as he was If she stayed sane after the Eclipse (or she could've convinced Guts to stay on Godo's cave to heal their emotional and psychological wounds)!
I want there to be a scene that mirrors Guts and Casca physically and passionately getting it on with each other (had to word it like that because of the RUclips not hiding comments) where Guts is the one to help heal her trauma the same way Casca did for Guts during the Golden Age. Of course, they’d get married and spend the rest of their days with each other. That would be so beautiful and a fitting ending.
I think it's also the pain of the symbol of sacrifice. When guts meets the god hand in the black swordsman arc one of them says something along the lines of "with the sacrificial brand you can't even get close to one of the godhand" but ofc guts did bc its guts. Griffith was literally inside of her

I have a theory that Griffith is actually a God and was always a God just in temporary human form. He even took the human form again later on. When he became Femto, he just took back his original form. He always felt otherworldly and a God cannot be judged or at least condemn based on human laws/logic. It does not make what happened to Casca okay, but it does make it really hard to classify and react to.

ngl I think sexual assault is overused in berserk. A lot of the time it feels like it's just there to artificially add "edginess" into the story, and it's made worse by the fact that it doen't really explore the impact it has on the victim. This maybe was the only occasion in wich it could have worked, but the SA is almost completely about Guts, and the fact that Casca goes crazy means that she can't express her feelings on it. Also doesn't help that every other villain attempts to SA Casca.

Sexual Assault happens way too much in reality. I don't like the scenes of it personally, and normally skip over them, but the ties to how common it is in the real world add a lot to the story.

No, it's because of trauma. Being on the battlefield and being sexually assaulted are two different things. Also people deal with trauma in different ways. It was too painful for Casca so mentally she shut down. We obviously know she is not mentally weak because she's seen many terrible things. R*** survivers respond to their trauma in many different ways but it does not mean they are weak or have a weak mind. If anything, I see Casca as being strong because I don't see how anyone would be able to live after experiencing so much tragedy.

Also if you read that Griffith dream with Casca again i belive he doesnt look at all happy, so thats also a reason i belive he didnt actually love Casca it wasnt a happy dream for him at all.

this analysis takes the events of the story at face value too much. Everything that happened in a story is because the author decided it should be that way. Why did Casca lose her mind? Because that's what Miura decided to do to the character, reducing her to plot point / reminder for Guts. What happened to Casca is knowing as "fridging." Her character was all but killed and stuck in the fridge for another character's development arc. She was one of the best and most compelling characters in the series and Miura wrote her out of the script. Casca is done dirty moreso than nearly any other great character I can think of, but it's not "Griffith" that destroyed her character. It was the freaking author

I think the reason she went mad after was that the demons and griffith made her gasm' so hard they she ended up in a fouge state. That and the sadness of knowing know man would ever compare to that.
Not to mention she lost the ability to speak, and lost her memory too
