Delivery Blocks the Bike Lane, Even When They Don't Have To

  • Just another day of a driver blocking the bike lane in North Park. This time, it's a truck unloading appliances. Obviously, they need to do this. But they could have pulled into the alley, or up to the curb to do it. They didn't have to block the bike lane, but this is what the design allows.
    Thanks for watching.
    These videos can be scary, but please know that my goal isn't to deter people from riding bikes in San Diego, but to show the real-world conditions. Sometimes it's pleasant, sometimes it's just fine, and other times there's tension and conflict.
    The roads in San Diego should be safe and accessible to everyone without the use of a car. My hope is that these videos help those in power make better decisions for all our safety. I also believe that the more people who decide to ride, the safer the roads will become.
    Please remember to support your local bike safety and mobility advocacy organizations, like BikeSD (bikesd.org/), the San Diego County Bike Coalition (sdbikecoalitio...) and Circulate San Diego (www.circulates...)

    Pulling past bollards and then backing back into the bike lane is next level carbrain.

    *four lanes for cars*
    *still parks in the bike lane*
    This is proof that streets don't need to be wider to accomodate everyone. They just need physical barriers to keep cars out of the areas they shouldn't go.
    Edit: Thank you for talking about the street design! So often you only hear users blaming other users, which is often valid, but the design should have prevented that conflict in the first place.

      I used to just blame drivers. But after reading books like Jesse Singer's THERE ARE NO ACCIDENTS and BICYCLE: OBJECT LESSONS by Jonathan Maskit, and spending time in place that are safe, it's about the design, and what the infrastructure allows.

    other day truck was pulled in at an angle... not only was there parking on the other side of the street there was a no parking anytime and a don't block the bike lane sign right in front of where he parked. I had time to kill and was riding my urban arrow so I stopped in front of 'em they came out and demanded I move. I told em it would just be a second I'm waiting for a friend and I told my friend I'm parked in front of the a-hole who only cares about himself. I laugh when about 1 minute in he threatened to call the police. after 5 mins he said don't make me run you over. after 10 mins he said look I'm sorry I won't do it again but this is crazy. I asked him how hard it is to park on the other side of the street and hoped he was sincere about not doing it again. I see that as the best use of those 10mins.

    I can tell you 370 reasons why that truck has to park on the road and could not use the alley.
    Power Lines namely, and it's too narrow.

    • @RidingBikesinSanDiego
      @RidingBikesinSanDiego  2 месяца назад +1

      @Robedz That's two reasons, and they're both nonsense. First, trucks aren't higher than power lines; in this case, they're literally parked under them. Also, the alley is plenty wide enough for a truck--trash trucks go down this alley regularly, and it was used by the people who built a giant building just up the block. Also, they could have just parked at the curb and not blocked the bike lane. Again: this is laziness on the part of the drivers, and disregard from the engineers who made a design that allows this behavior.

    You want your fancy mocha chino, someone has to deliver it, get over yourself and go around, or perhaps you should have used the alley junior

      What are you talking about, @blanehewitt8826? You think these guys are delivering coffee? It's so strange when folks you like you come in here and have these tantrums.

    • @blanehewitt8826
      @blanehewitt8826 2 месяца назад

      I don’t care what the man was delivering, my point was that the business that you folks benefit from having in your local neighborhood, must be supplied, I am sorry if that is inconveniencing your daily joy ride.
      Btw, making fun of your whining, isn’t a tantrum, it is someone pointing out how petty your “special” group acts.

    • @RidingBikesinSanDiego
      @RidingBikesinSanDiego  2 месяца назад +1

      @blanehewitt8826 That's the point: you don't care. People driving cars typically don't care about people outside of cars. But you care an awful lot when a business replaces parking with other things that benefit them.
      In this case, a business is not getting a delivery. This is a development project, and there's no reason they couldn't park a few feet to the right. But you don't care.
      Also, not everyone riding a bike is out for a "joy ride." On this day, I was riding out to buy things. I was going to the grocery store, and running other errands. And I was doing so without exacerbating parking and being traffic with other drivers. You don't know it yet, but you want people to ride bikes. You want less people driving while you're driving.

      Cyclists are the exception to the rule in road use. That means you need to make the adjustments for the majority, it may be terribly inconvenient for you.
      Regardless the rules apply for everyone, so while you blow through the stop signs ( again I don’t care about the justification), we can let it be, when some poor delivery guy is in your way, have some grace… go around, without making a scene

      @blanehewitt8826 If you don't care about the nuances of a situation, I don't know what to tell you. If the rules apply to everyone, this driver isn't following them.
      Also, seriously, do you think I'm "making a scene" in this video? Is that what you're seeing?

    Why do you keep running through stop signs? You're part of the problem.

    • @RidingBikesinSanDiego

      Folks like you, @dno8025, who are hate-watching and posting hot takes like this, are actually the problem. I actually don't mind when drivers roll stop signs a bit, as long as they're doing so after they've looked. But since you asked the question, I'm running them because there's no danger in these particular intersections in these moments, and because it's actually safer for me to treat a stop as a yield. This isn't my opinion, but fact that the government also acknowledges as true: www.nhtsa.gov/sites/nhtsa.gov/files/2023-03/Bicyclist-Yield-As-Stop-Fact-Sheet_032123_v5_tag.pdf

    • @RidingBikesinSanDiego
      @RidingBikesinSanDiego  2 месяца назад +1

      @blanehewitt8826 It's about safety. And if you watch these videos carefully, you'll find that most drivers don't come to a complete stop at stop signs. They slow and look, and assess. When there are other drivers at intersections, they'll wait their turn (often still rolling slowly). Honestly, it's not a problem, and I don't mind that drivers roll stops. You likely do it all the time, but you need something to cling onto while you hate-watch videos on youtube.

    maybe cyclist should find a nice park to play with your toys, roads were made for commerce, not “special” people

    • @RidingBikesinSanDiego
      @RidingBikesinSanDiego  2 месяца назад +2

      What is is like to be so mistaken about history with so much confidence? The first paved roads were actually paved specifically because of advocacy by people riding bicycles. Also, streets that are designed for bikes are better for commerce. When bike lanes are installed, businesses make more money.
      And your use of "special" here comes off as ablest. You'd be happier if you rode a bike.
