Drivers All Over the Bike Lane on Park Blvd
We're on Park Blvd just north of University, a couple of drivers pulling into the bike lane behind us, followed by drivers backed up too far, then a USPS truck, then an Amazon driver putting the truck in the lane even though the curb is wide open, followed by another driver in front of new housing just north of ECB.
A section between Lincoln and Polk is closed, hopefully for re-striping, so we'll see how that goes. Hopefully they make space for deliveries and parking that doesn't interfere with people on bikes.
Thanks for watching.

Riding Along with Drivers While Hauling a Trailer

It's fun to ride safely on a good street across the city. It's also funny that most of the drivers who pass us are right there with us at the last light as we arrive at our location. Bike is traffic. When there is no bike lane, bike can take up the whole lane. That's the law. Now, whether that is dangerous is another question.

  • @sdsk8rboi
    @sdsk8rboi 2 дня назад

    What you encountered was incredibly typical. It's rare that I can go the full distance from University to Meade without needing to take the lane for at least a portion of that distance. There need to be hard barriers for the parking protected bike lanes so that parked cars don't encroach on the bike lane. That's an issue north of Meade too.

    I work at the building on your left (a large unmarked white building) when you stopped at the Taylor & Sunset light. I am also an avid cyclist and ride my bike often after work during summer's long days. I see a lot of cyclists ( especially big group rides on Thursday mornings) from my office window traveling down Tayor to Pacific Highway without any protection from cars in the form of a lane or curb. I would love a bike lane on Taylor Street as I, myself take it to Pacific Highway make that right, ride for a few miles then back to work to let traffic filter out before I head home. Drivers should use the bike lane to turn right. This avoids the dreaded right hook. The lane is dashed indicating that cars can cross at that point to make a right turn. One might argue that there is too long of a dashed line, but that is not the fault of the driver, but rather the traffic engineers. What the driver did was legal and he was not harassing you as he did not cut you off.

    That person saved what, 10 seconds by cutting in front of you? Not only what that driver did was annoying, but it's also dangerous. The California Driver's Handbook states: -It is illegal to drive in a bicycle lane unless you are: Turning (within 200 feet of an intersection). -Watch for pedestrians, bicyclists, or motorcyclists between your vehicle and the curb. -Respect the right-of-way of any vehicle, bicyclist, or motorcyclist already in the lane. @kitchencarvings4621 I'm not sure about that. The dotted line seems to be designed to allow a driver to move over when planning to turn to not slow other drivers behind them. But this driver was cutting over to try to pass those drivers on the right (and, judging by how they braked, they seemed unsure if they'd fit). One could argue that I had the right of way, anyway. It might be legal, but that doesn't mean it was a good decision. And as much as I don't mind dunking on the driver, this is also an issue of design.

      @@RidingBikesinSanDiego It could be that they didn't want the bike getting in front of them. I've seen that a lot. It could be that they didn't look, and that's really bad and dangerous. It could also be that the driver misjudged the speed you were traveling and thought there was plenty of room and time to change lanes. I think that happens a lot, and it appears to us riders that the driver is just being a jerk. Your dashed white lines start a fair bit further back from the intersection than ours do here. I think the rage from drivers also comes from feelings of helplessness. It SEEMS like we need cars for everything. That's what everyone's told, and cars are dangerous and expensive. So, when a driver who feels this way sees someone who has some how escaped the costly dread we've been taught is necessary, they get angry. This is deep-seeded cultural trauma.

I wish the entire transit center were elevated so pedestrian and cycle traffic could go under it all. That point is so dangerous for people who too often end up in front of trains. Cars have many layers of protection there. People are kind of on their own. :-( My other route off the hill is to go the back way behind Presidio taking Cosoy to Jackson and on to Juan. Lots of potholes, but a much shorter time spent on narrow roads with impatient drivers. Great when you just want to get where you are going and cuts out all of the Morena awkwardness.

      Up at the top of Presidio, instead of going through the park, I tried to make the left instead, and the quality of the pavement was so lousy, I haven't been back there since. Maybe I'll try it again, and share it next time I'm over there.

    It is strange to me that so many of the medians just have concrete or asphalt instead of trees and shrubs. It's not like San Diego just became sunny in the last few years or something.

      It didn't just become sunny, no, but it's gotten hotter in the last twenty years here. Where the really sweltering days used to just last a week or two, it's now more like a month or two.

    The lane is too narrow for a car and a bike to share. You are doing it right. That's menacing with a deadly weapon. He should get real jail time for that. There was no excuse since the left-hand lane was empty. Obvious intimidation.

    And maybe they should start charging bikes per mile traveled and insurance, registration and all the fees that all other vehicles get charged for using the infrastructure that you seem to think is your god given right that everyone else pays for?

    • @RidingBikesinSanDiego
      @RidingBikesinSanDiego 13 дней назад

      @malenurse1999 Maybe they should teach more drivers about how roads are broken in the first place and how maintenance and repair is funded? Cars require insurance because they're capable of doing damage that a bike simply cannot; registration is required so the state can ensure safety and air quality, and to help track expensive (though depreciating) assets and to collect money to help pay for the damage the weight of cars and trucks do to roads. But what you probably don't know is that most road work is funded by general funds, which everyone pays into through various taxes, regardless of how they get around. Also, plenty of people (myself included) also own a car, but choose to drive less and ride a bike instead.

    what I hate is when I'm doing like 22 in a 25 and a driver just drive right next to me in the middle of the road because they agree there isn't enough space for both of us in our lane. but then we approach an intersection. like are you just going to block traffic trying to turn onto the street, speed up to get in front of me or just get behind me. most of the time they end up waiting until the last min, cutting me off, then force me to the curb.

  • @mariusfacktor3597

    Brilliant insight. Instead of thinking about the needs of the population, the street designers just made everything a highway. It's horrendous design like this that makes people hate being in American cities. And often visitors of cities in the US mistakenly equate their hate with the people who live in those cities who are often young, liberal, and diverse. But those residents are victims of this horrible street design too. They had no say in it and their needs are ignored.

      College Area could be such a vibrant area, but once you step off campus, there's nothing but single-family housing for blocks and blocks behind a few multi-unit complexes, and there's nothing but narrow sidewalk and no bike lane from Montezuma to El Cajon Blvd. The transit hub on campus with a trolley station is the only thing that helps a student without a car avoid becoming isolated to campus.

    It seems as if the only design for use is still focused on cars. We do need a wholesale change in the way we think about mobility. Perhaps if San Diego picked a neighborhood and showcased fully separated bike lanes, roundabouts for cars, removal of street lights and stop signs, we would see a tremendous increase in property values in that area. That could be used to push change in other neighborhoods.

      I nominate East Village and Gas Lamp since it wouldn't take a lot of heavy lifting. There are already tons of pedestrians, and with a few well placed roundabouts, scramble crosswalks, bus only lanes, bike lanes, and tree lined medians put in place the area could be a national model for traffic calming, pedestrian and bike infrastructure.

    Hey man, big fan of your IG page and youtube channel as well. But, I have to set you straight on the topic of bike lane in front of Caltrans office. Because I work for Caltrans and I happen to know. And I too am an avid cyclist and MTBer in the area. Riding 3k to 5K miles per year. Caltrans does not handle bike/ped facilities on city streets. And you mentioned that Caltrans is notorious for not having bike/ped stuff in their projects. Actually, there is a big push by Caltrans to include Bike/Ped facilities in ALL projects where it is reasonable and feasible. The problem is, most money goes to major assets, the major one being pavement. So, pick your poison. I for one, would love more infrastucture for cyclists, believe me. But, that is gonna happen at the City level, not for Caltrans. My other thought is, maybe youre not from San Diego or even California originally, so this may be new to you. I mean, you've never been to Perry's! haha, you didn't miss much. Many better places with the same vibe in SD area. Would love to chat with you some more on these topics. I have similar heartache with a certain local mountain bike association. They seem to be really focuesd on building/supporting bike parks and pump tracks and could give a shit about trails. It makes no sense to me. It's all about money. Money talks.... and you know the rest. I used to let all of this BS consume me and I did a lot of work to educate myself and try to contribute ideas and thoughts. They basically tell me to get lost. I just ride bikes and try to have fun. If youve ever been to a city that relaly puts time and MONEY into bike/ped infrastucture, it usually means they have money and political support to back it. Bend, Oregon, Lake Tahoe, Santa Cruz. The list goes on. Not sure why we cant have it that way in San Diego, but it seems like we are due for something, considering the price we pay to live here. Talk to you soon!

      Hi @rguitarist! I'd love ot discuss the details of Caltrans with you one day, and I appreciate you chiming in. I've spoken to other folks at Caltrans over the years, and my impression was that the push to include bike/ped facilities is a fairly recent effort. Honestly, I hope that progress happens soon, and I hope that the footage I post of my experiences riding over freeways is a useful resources for the organization! And you're correct: I'm not a San Diego native, but I've lived here for a decade and a half now. Still, if I'm making factual errors, I want to make sure to correct them! I appreciate your help with that.

      @dno8025 Love silly comments like this! I'm not sure how you wrap your head around the idea that people ride bikes because of poverty. Sure, plenty of people who struggle economically ride bikes, but plenty of people who could also simply drive choose to ride bikes. Why? Well, it's healthier, cheaper, and more fun than driving a car. But comments like this also seem like projections. I'd bet that while you have a car, you're also frustrated with how much it costs you, how much you're forced to maintain it, etc. Rather than looking inward, and thinking about how you make yourself happier, you're lashing out at people who are making the decisions you wish you could...
