My grandpas bull got me good... Rode it longer than any pro. Once he got done throwing me around got me good trying to escape... Finally jumped thru electric fence... lucky he didn't follow
The bull needs a ring. They are much easier to work with. A short 18" chain hanging from it makes them easier to catch when out with the cows. The chain forces them to walk with their head elevated, it's not to say they won't charge if provoked but the head up makes them slightly safer to deal with. They can be led by the ring. They get the job done. While extra vigilance is required they are not difficult to work with. In a calm environment that the cows need they soon also become a bit calm also. If they continue aggresive......off to the lunch meat department. Wire a knife switch into the plug going to the silo unloaded motor, you can shut it down while inside the silo. Also in a set up where there are multiple silos it's an added safety feature that prevents accidents.
Thank you for showing me a very good video and helping me understand some ways to preserve food and take care of cows. Wishing you and your family a happy Thanksgiving
Hello you two, a very nice vlog, I'm happy to watch your videos, the machines work very well and you are great at using them, a very nice and sturdy little shed
Great video Kip!! Sounds like your're planning some great moves to really modernize your dairy operation!! As a former dairy farmer, I always believed it was much better to have the bull in the tank than on a nose lead!! 😊😊
Artificial breeding is talent, I learned after about 3 years of calling a technician. Went to an ABS breeder school. for 4 days I think. I really enjoyed the skill level it took and pride I felt when a cow was pregnant and that calf dropped.
I wondered if u ever had a hoof doctor out there .. very cool !!!!. U do realize that you're gonna be messing with the color scheme of your herd right? Having the red bulls ...lol 😊have a happy turkey day !!🎉🎉❤️🙏
Unless he is homozygous polled, about half his offspring will grow horns. Purebred black angus are homozygous polled, that's why F1 crosses are always polled.
Love your videos come out a day watch how u work with cows i like to start out with few cows right now i dont do anything after i left the farm in 2018
A dairy I used to work for used ABS for all their breeding. They came and basically graded all the cows for positive and negative attributes and matched the cows with whatever bulls had the genes to combat the negatives. They(ABS) walk the freestalls every day to chalk tails and identify cows in heat and breed. While it does come at a fairly significant cost, it is a whole aspect of cow health that you don't have to think about as much. Once everything got going they were maintaining an extremely good percentage of bred cows in the herd at any given time. I want to say it was 33% or better, and at times was as high 50%. The biggest bonus of all was to not have any ornery bulls to deal with. The farm is in NW Vermont and was featured in Hoard's Dairyman and got awards for breeding excellence also.
As long as your soil tests don't indicate that your soil isn't deficient in micro nutrients, your manure should provide enough micros to supply the plants. That's what gives us livestock farmers an edge over the strictly crop farmers.
Kip you should watch the latest episode of SaskDutch Kid a dairy farm in Canada went to a new ear tag system for tracking cows in heat and location and other things Keep up the great work and videos I hope that God will continue to bless your family 🙏
Thanks for another great video Kip. It was interesting. You all are doing good with corn harvest and the combine. Lots of farmers dealing with muddy conditions. Hard on equipment and operators. Looks like you are doing good in the muddy fields. 17 percent corn is not bad. Good going. You were talking about your bulls and switching to artificial injection to become pregnant. I know a fair amount on that. I needed to make some extra money so started helping a vet do the work. He sent me to ABS’s school to learn how to do it. Got certified and did injections for years. Because of my age now about eight years ago gave up my certification. Kip I believe you would do well with it. I found it not that bad to do once I established my routine and all that. Think you would do well with it Kip. I would not trust those bulls. They can be dangerous in a quick second. Your silo unloaded looked good that you redid. Nice going on that. Glad you were able to attend the meeting on dairy updates and all that. Good way to see what others are going and new ideas and such. Thanks for everything Kip. You all take care and be safe. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family. Enjoy the holiday. Blessings to all of you. The Iowa Farm Boy. Steve.
We had a two bad tempered jersey when i was 8. They put me a stone water tank we hadthat was half broken . Since then our bulls have been so quiet that they willlet you sit on them both jerseys and the herefords
We made the transition from bull breeding to AI seven years ago. There is a learning curve to it but once you get going you get some really nice heifers coming in. Biggest thing is to buy the best bulls you can not just what’s cheap. I’d also recommend going the sexed and beef route. Those crossbred calves are way better feeders than a Holstein could ever dream of being and people are willing to pay for that.
🇫🇷 Hi Kip great video as every Sunday … Interest of bringing red holstein genetics ? None ? How long you keep your bulls in the herd normally ? Ho do you select them vs genetics ? Type of bulls you are looking for ? God bless
How many beans do you have left to run. Nothing worse than a muddy fall. Sounds like a great corn crop which is good. How's the Grant Man doing these days ??? Hope you and your family has a great thanksgiving 🦃🦃🦃 STAY SAFE AND STAY WARM !!!
That red bull looks just like the dry beans I grew this year "Jacobs Cattle' (named after the biblical story) and looks just like a handful of cows. There is also a "holstein bean" that is black and white plus a "holstein cow pea' Track down some seeds for the garden to entertain the kids, they can start their own farm/ranch, and learn a story along the way. The Jacobs Cattle grew well here in SE Michigan so you should have no trouble with them.
My herd is all red and polled. Be cool to see your herd go red and red factor. Lineback Bulls got great conception and make great crossbreds. Maybe at first in ai use a beef bull after you breed the cows or something. Angus calves here in wi selling for 6-800
Bully boy looks alright Kip. Don't know how much he'll wanna be your buddy if you keep being the third wheel while he's trying to make the ladies swoon? lol
I'm not sure about the red bull. He has a look in his eye that made me uncomfortable. If you start AI, and I think you have enough folks there to make it work, you'll gain a lot of control over your genetics and quite frankly you get a closer relationship with your cows. (Not a joke, just experience)
Your parlor would be perfect set up to do AI work. Not work vhasin them when you can run thru barn with ease. Food for thought for the future as ypu transition to AI cows.
never trust a bull. Back in 1990 our bull turned on us. It about killed my dad. I seen it happen. He threw my dad about ten feet in the air and when my dad came down his face hit the top of the bulls head. We were lucky that when i yelled the bull took off to the other end of the pen. My brother and me didn't want to move him because we didn't want to cause our dad any more damage but we didn't have any other option because the bull could have came back. My dad had to be medivaced out. No one wa willing to try and load the bull. Our neighbor came over with a 30 30 to shoot the bull. They tried to get him to come to the fence but he wouldn't. they asked me to come down to the barn and see if i could get him to come to the fence. As soon as that bull seen me he started to trout to the fence. The neighbor put one round right between the bulls eyes and he stood there for about 15 seconds before he dropped.
Glad you Dad survived the encounter. What injuries did he sustain ? Did he remain Conscious with the entire ordeal? Was your father bleeding, How long had that bull been in your herd. Was he surrounded by heifers at the time or in isolation
@@geesss8675 he was in with a group of cows. It broke his face up pretty bad and was bleeding from his forehead. He was conscious but did not realize the extent of his injuries. He said shoot the bull and don't call the EMS. We had him for about 4 or 5 years. As he got older he became meaner. We never hit or abused him either. You never want to do that to livestock especially a bull
It came close to happening to me fortunately I was only tossed over the fence outside of the pen. I got away with just a cracked collarbone. I was very lucky.
Out of all the shows that I watch yours is my favorite and most importantly down to earth...keep up with the good work

HAVE A GOOD THANKSGIVING KIPS FARMING
It’s been a odd Fall this year I don’t recall it ever being this warm for November
Thank you for showing me a very good video and helping me understand some ways to preserve food and take care of cows. Wishing you and your family a happy Thanksgiving
Hello Duong, nice to meet you here. Haven't seen you make a video in a long time
Duong I'm a fan of yours from India, I haven't seen you make a video in a long time?
Hello you two, a very nice vlog, I'm happy to watch your videos, the machines work very well and you are great at using them, a very nice and sturdy little shed
Likewise, I also think like you, looking forward to his videos'
OMG, I really didn't expect to see you here, I wish you good health
Totally enjoyed watching the video Kip 😊
Thanks!
Hey Kip, I believe my uncle was at the same meeting representing the family farm in Orlando. Farm is located in southern Jackson County MI Riske Farms
Awsone video. HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO YOU ALL!
Good show
Your new trimmer uses the 5 step dutch method I think by the look of the muddle he does so slurry doesn't build up in between claws .
He has a awesome crush
Thanks for the video Kip! You guys have a Happy Thanksgiving and stay safe!
Another very interesting video Thank you 😊😊😊😊
Take one strap off when your loading corn they just support the tarp. You don’t have to tarp it if your hauling to the farm unless it’s windy.

Polled bulls or not, just expect to dehorn. We use some polled genetics and we still dehorn
Great video how many cows. Do you milk good job
Another good video. Very nice corn yields! I’ve seen you put corn in the silos. Is all of this going to the elevator?

Happy Thanksgiving to you as well!
How do you determine which cows to trim? How much does it cost?
How often does he come?
Those folks are from my hometown
I see Delaval has a system out that identifies and locates cows in heat.
How are your dry cows and bred heifers doing

Did you guys sell that 9500 combine?

Where do you get your bulls from I've been looking and know body seems to have them anymore, we're a dairy so I would really like a holstein
Look up Dairy Star. At least a dozen ads in there with Holstein bulls👍
Use AI much much better. Get superior genetics without having all the trouble of dealing with a bull.
@@rogeraltendorf2868.
I'm on the west side of Michigan, is that dairy star local to Michigan or is it and national deal I don't really have anyway to go out of state

One advantage with AI breeding is you can use sexed semen on your better cows to improve your herd at a faster time frame
Definitely time to move on to AI only 40 years behind on genetics
Very v4et
dad got gorded by a holstein bull. quit milking cows.
