Did you know Stephen Bauman used to be a graffiti artist? In this interview he talks about how he transitioned to fine art, his time studying at the prestigious Florence Academy, the differences between how Florence Academy teaches students vs a traditional university, and what he had to learn after going beyond the sight size method. This is just one of many videos of Stephen Bauman and I would encourage you to watch the other’s that I’ve listed below. I’ve also collabed with Stephen to bring you his realistic approach to drawing portraits. Check out his Masterpiece demo - proko.com/bauman
Demo Description
Stephen completes his portrait over 2 days working entirely from a live model and finishes with realistic rendering. This demo and lesson is a must-have for those wanting to see the entire process and workflow of a professional draftsman. We’re so excited to release this new demo series. Can you make an animation channel i would be very happy with the movements with the human body and stuff like fighting scenes no one explains it as well as you do so yea pls make an animation channel
"I think beautiful things make our lives better." In a video full of really amazing quotes, I think this one is my favorite.
Hello! Could you add subtitles, please? It would help me a lot because I am deaf (but I wear headphones so I could hear a little bit). I hope you understand. Also, I enjoy a lot your videos, thank you Prokopenko! By the way, I am a teen who is aspiring to be a fine artist too😊
And it will actually help for people who knows English bad. Its more easier to understand what people saying with subtitles. (sorry for my english)
Also for people who are trying to watch at work and don't want to turn the volume on too loud :P
Good idea, and good luck with your career Liza. 👍🏼

His explanation of big A art school was exactly my experience. I came out more confused artistically, than when I went in. I've been studying online from people like Proko and other online teachers and practicing a lot myself. I have an immense understanding of the human form, because of you. I now use your techniques and videos to teach my high school students.
wait what?! u r now teacher n u learn figures from proko ? wow
@@sandeep_draws no, I didn't learn figures exclusively from Proko. It is just one of the tools I used to further my overall education. I definitely learned some things at art school, but it was mostly superficial. They never went into the meat of drawing. It was mostly conceptual education.
@@ghost21501 Is it worth going into an art school ? Do they teach anything new than yt ? coz i just completed my 12th n now i want to become an artist or a teacherb but in india artist has no value :(
@@sandeep_draws I really enjoyed the whole experience, but if you want to focus on a specific type of art, look for a school that specializes in the thing you're interested in.
Coming out confused artistically is completely normal, even optimal, because part of the experience is supposed to dig to the core of why you want to be an artist. That takes beyond a college degree to develop, and isn’t easy on anyone with real love and passion for it.
I went straight into grad school after getting my bachelors, and it took 2 years into that for me to really start figuring out what mattered to me as an artist. Absolutely worth it.
It’s nice to see so many accomplished artist in this day and age, that have roots in Graffiti, something I have close ties too. As I grew up writing graffiti with my older bother and sister.
It's all about journey... And with time you'll know your Art Style....
I love watching people share their journey, it inspires us.....
Also I'm a small artist who's developing art style... ☺️☺️☺️
Word
Love Bauman's unplaceable artsy accent
I love the fact that proko not only is one of the best anatomy teacher on RUclips but also introduces to us to wonderful artists
As a current design student who is focusing on learning to draw I really appreciate Stephen's insights on the lackluster state of drawing classes in colleges. It is infuriating to be paying this much for what we get in return!
Idk what design is like but definitely watch the draftsmen podcast series on art school. If you’re in the us art school is a joke.
In ‘specific’ colleges. My college’s drawing classes were excellent.
Thank you to Proko and the team for this artist interview series. I always learn so much, and it’s inspiring to see how dedicated and passionate these amazing artists are. Great answer to “how do you justify art?”
I love how old school Stephen is when it comes to graffiti. I agree that Banksy is not who I would consider a graffiti artist. And I saw that Schnabel movie about Basquiat...very awesome👍🏼 (PS Stephen’s time in Florence sounds like heaven...nasty apartments and all😀)
I think a lot of artists like Banksy start off as genuine "street artists" but then the galleries and the collectors begin to influence the direction of their careers.
Space Skipster Oh, for sure! But as you stated...with his career trajectory and how his art is perceived now, he has transcended the graffiti artist definition.
@@EmmyMW a few years ago a Banksy appeared on a wall next to my brother's apartment in Camden, London. 👍🏼 🎨 😁
Space Skipster Whoa! Very cool😀
I knew this guy when he was in Palatka. He would graffiti "cabo" at certain points through out the city. He always had talent, glad to see he is doing what he loves.
That’s crazy. I draw Bart and the Simpsons all the time. I thought i was the only who was obsessed with their design.
I'm pretty sure millions of kids drew the Simpsons. You're definitely not the only one. Just type #simpsonart on Instagram and you'll see 1000's of people drawing the Simpsons.
shojimujo shojimujo I should’ve been clearer... I meant it as someone who has been drawing for decades and has gone through phases of drawing certain subjects and moving on to different ones as they improve their skills. You are correct however. I’m not the only one, but I had never known of someone as talented as Stephen who drew the simpsons all the time, like I did.
@@dirkit247 You'd be surprised how many talented artists are into the Simpsons. Look up these names on Instagram. The first guy drew pictures of what the Simpsons would look like if they were real people, it's pretty funny. These are just a few of many,

@@shojimujoshojimujo3315 so? I fail to see how this diminishes anyone's passion and skill. No art is original. Im sure the stuff you draw is also inspired by something unless you are an alien.
@@TheLYagAmi Bro what are you talking about? Where did I say anything about diminishing people's passion or skill?
He said he thought he was the only one so I shared that there are in fact a lot of people into what he's into. How is that diminishing passion or skill? Seriously no clue how you came up with that.
Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.- Pablo Picasso
I have to stop the video quick because its funny, I went to art school thinking id be a concept artist but then I heard about "combat art" and here I am 8 years later as a military artist (about to get out though!) , never thought my career would go in this direction but its been fun!
I cant believe you got to speak with Bauman in person. He is huge inspiration for me. Casey Baugh is another one, would be awesome if you got a one on one with him.
Thank you, Stan and the team, and Stephen of course, for this interview!
I went to an art institute and I was sad to find we only had 1 life drawing class...and it was only 1 session a week. I finished the class after 11 weeks and was left feeling like I was rushed through and didnt really learn anything. So glad that school is now closed. I am really sad now that I didn't go to the Art Center instead. Going to the right art school, makes tremendous difference.
Listening to this I get frustrated over how bad art teaching is in where I live. In elementary school I learned perspective and depth however, the three first years of high school I learned nothing. The teachers had so little knowledge of art she did not know what warm and cold colors were, she only knew about complementary color.
Great exchange of experiences, knowledge and ideas. I love the openness and the optimistic mood, with which Stephen talks. Furthermore it's a nice diversification, to get insights to an European art school.
What I love about you interviews, Stan, is, that you keep humble and curious. And you step back, so that your guests shine in the spotlight and are able to speak without fear of getting interrupted. You are well prepared for the guests and have good questions. Kudos to you and your team. I learn a lot and feel inspired. Thank you! 🤩
the end was really cool. it really puts in perspective how different fine art is from like concept or other art same with music classical music is something very involved that we gave meaning to with music theory etc. but honestly its just great to experience; it doesn't need to be any more concrete. great vid
So basically he has to reach god tier to earn the privilege of cleaning those bathrooms. Damn. One of the best interviews I've watched so far!
I really like your interviews, big fan of yours. Whether subconsciously or consciously, I think knowledge has been imparted and absorbed. Watched all the way through
I can't imagine the amount of work he had to do to completely change his style ... It must have taken years, right? His work and his works are magnificent.
Not to be confused with _Stefan Baumann._
That dude dresses like he's hunting down Robin Hood
I'm waiting for Banksy's interview on proko.
Interesting video !!! This is really amazing
i m a new fan Stephen Bauman. aug 2020
Thanks....really enjoyed the interview
Nice stan prokopenko bravo
Drinking a beer on the steps of a church and riding my bike around Florence after midnight, Heaven on Earth.
He's very talented, beautiful works. I checked the Florence academy and there's no way I could afford it. It sucks that not everyone has the same opportunities in life, but what's life without a challenge right?!
Priceless conversation.
Admire both, Stan & Stephen.
It's soooo beautiful 😍😍😍

love this dude! thanks for the interview
Very humble...i like that!
Subtitles, please! PT.
excellent interview thank you guys
Incredible Insight...
hahaha.. i was thinking of Stefan Baumann .. .
I've done work for DC comics, LTV Steel, Cleveland Indians, Cleveland Browns, University Hospitals and other Corporate businesses. The only time I ever felt like an artist was when i caught tags and climbed bill boards to write graffiti.
My headphones didn't expect for this guy's voice.
Amazing
Can you do a video about facial expressions
2:40 holy shit we did that too or a variation of that we drew everything top down and the scenarios just happened in our heads as we essentially update the page constantly. :o
much❤️Stan!
I want to send you a picture I don't know how to draw it .but where can I send the photo
Hello! I have my photo to participate. Ok., I'll read the contest rules. Thank you for this exciting oportunity.
Sight size is Nicolades. Historians call it “having drawing”. It’s just basic projection.
It does take life drawing for a few years at 18-19 years. Then who cares.
Many artists can’t do it. Only a critic, historian or other artists can tell if you have it.
It’s not beauty. But it does underpin a kind of visual knowledge that can be important for creation.
I doubt the modern artists cared, Picasso being an outlier.
Classical draftsmen can heroise what is a really physical skill. That may because they still are hired for what is an art trade.
By itself not that important, especially with photography replacing its commercial value.
Notice the trend towards photo bashing replacing hand creation of forms.
lovely 😍😍
Is it bad that I'm obsessed with figure drawing
Why would it be?
@@cookies4712 maybe it's the body lol
@@pawlutsada8935 obsessing over it means that you enjoy doing it and that your happy doing figure drawings, figure drawing can boost your skills and learn the beauty of the human body not to sexualize it, so it's fine in my opinion
@@cookies4712 is to sexualize the human body bad ?
@@safwanosman6329 no, its just that if you wanna sexualize it just watch porn instead lol
I want a Steve Huston full oil painting process demo.
Please ;^; some day ;v;

What an HARD life........^_^ But it was a nice interview. Talented guy.
Bauman was a tagger?! This dude is interesting. I want to have a beer with him.
CABO 🤘🏼🔥
Deep reference right here 🤘
How you all view at artist who draw hyperrealistic drawing drawn out with square grids ?
The simple answer: art isn’t a competition, so make how you see fit.

the very idea of art getting to people where the very idea would somehow seem otherwise profane is pretty fine to begin with. if you track down some amazing artist who painted something on an underpass? pay them.
Necesito aprender ingles :'(
Bro so this guy has like a hiro hamada type story
Can you help me

Ok
If you close your eyes, you'll hear john malkovich instead of stephen
2nd
why does he have kind of an accent if he.was born in memphis and raised in FL ??
I was thinking the same thing. He was in Florence.
@Rebecca Leeman Let's keep it confined. Tina Turner is from Nutbush Tennessee, but she has a British accent. Go figure.
Lol

this is great but also stephen sounds like john malkovich
Stephen is undoubtedly an excellent teacher (and artist) but those teaching and cleaning ‘scholarships’ sound like total bs lol. It’s not a discount on your tuition if you’re doing work. I don’t doubt the appreciation for his teachers but man it’s no wonder the creative industries are plagued with awful, unprofessional work conditions.
We wouldn't call it a discount. It's trading a service for a service.
It makes a big difference for the people who otherwise wouldn't have quite enough to be able to attend.
@@ProkoTV I agree that it definitely would make a difference, but those who can't afford to trade their services in lieu of cash are hard pressed. Of course, they probably wouldn't be attending art schools in Tuscany anyways so it's a moot point.
For some reason I always thought he was Norwegian lol
Proko isn't a fan of the underground culture haha he's so uncomfortable and judgemental about all the mentions of street art
I also noticed Proko seemed distracted or ill at ease during the interview. The subject matter or was he not feeling well or just preoccupied with other issues? Who knows...
First
Didnt expect bauman to have done graffiti before, thats a surprise
Also pls check my art account @artsy_.draws and see if u like my art 😁🙏
His work is horrible.
