I did almost the exact same thing with your batman books. That's how i learned shading/light sources. Another great video!!🔥 Thanx dave!
Man my sketches are very good but i suck at shading and lighting and stuff
@@Fm83473 That might mean that you’re only observing the contour of the body, not the form of it.
@@Fm83473 Get super detailed toys, like MacFarlane toys, and and aim lights of varying intensity at them from different angles, to see how the shadows wrap and fall
Someone get Greg Land to watch this

I'm starting to draw my own comic book and this information IS GOLD, God bless you Dave

I love how David Finch's art transforms before our eyes. Amazing.
This is just what I needed. Thank you so much!
I've always used reference this way but it really bugged me the idea of having a Frankenstein of various artists. This video gives me more confidence to keep pursuing art the way I do!
Thanks for setting us free to reference other artists. First I see Jim Lee erase. Now Dave Finch lets me reference artist I like. Freedom.
I've been waiting for or this my entire life, thank you so much Mr.Finch 👍🔥🤩
I love the ideas in here. Very much a Bruce Lee approach to comic book art 'absorb what is useful, discard what isn't, add what is uniquely your own.' It's also very reassuring to see that someone of David Finch's level still looks to other artists for inspiration.
Because he's incapable of doing it without relying on other people

AWESOME! thank you so much!!
Terrific Dave. So many viewers have asked how to do this type of reference. You explained and demonstrated this perfectly! Thanks a lot!!!
I have been looking forward to this one all week since you mentioned it on Monday.
Ive been practicing this in recent artworks and its a great method to learn but still feel secure with my drawings. Cool to have you make a video on this technique!
“The Best in the Business” 👊🤩
Thanks DF.! 👊😎
Appreciate you making these videos for the young aspiring artists out here
Very cool video, thank you!
I especially liked to hear your thoughts during the shadows! Well done!!
Thanks David
Love your honesty.
I like vids like this. While I am an artist, I can always learn something plus I like comics and it's art so learning and seeing the art is dope.
good advice i also take inspiration for some of works through comics, very good for learning shading and light
“Good artists copy great artists steal”. Steve Jobs quoting Pablo Picasso 😂 💕🐔👍💕
“Those who do not want to imitate anything, produce nothing.” - Salvador Dalí
Thank you for this. I've started collecting reference from various sources, but I often find myself doing this for reference as well.
"STOP SWIPING"!!! love it.
You are a life saver Dave! I have been struggling with figures recently and this video came. Thanks a lot!
You make it look so easy but that's where lots and lots of practice comes in....
I truly love how your artwork has evolved. In the beginning, your characters had similar vibes, looks and structure. These days, brother, you’ve evolved into one of the rock gods of comic book art! Thanks so much for the work, the content, the videos
Thanks for another great video Dave. These videos not only provide information but inspiration.
IT'S ALIVE!!!! Frankendrawing. But, honestly, I really like this, never thought of it. Thank you for sharing interesting and ingenious methods.
Thanks David, what a great idea! Recently a friend and I have being going back through our old copy of How To Draw Comics The Marvel Way, and re-sketching the characters but with the modern costumes. Lots of fun, but your method is next level!
I've been looking forward to this.
Thank You!
No need to ask, take my like.
Holy crap! I do this all the time! I thought it was plagiarism!!
Thanks again, Dave!!
It's laziness. Use real life.
@@MrRossT1 it’s pretty hard to hire a model and get them to hold crazy action poses.
@@arachosia Whatever. 🙄
@@MrRossT1 yeah yeah go cry to Twitter
That's what most mediocre people will tell you, that you're stealing, making plagiarism, but that's a huge lie
This has been how art worked since it's very conception, art is a way to make something new from the things that already exist
Thanks for sharing your knowledge, always a pleasure to follow you live streaming and your video tutorial !
Actually so helpful thank you Mr. Finch
Excelente explicação , é a primeira vez que vejo alguém ensinar algo tão útil para quem está começando nos desenhos de personagens. Thanks Dave!
Thank you Thank you Thank you, I am at a point in my art where I can't figure out how to move forward. This is exactly what I needed Thank you so much Mr Finch thank you.
Thank you so much, i always said to me how can i imagine differents poses and how to do with lights and shadows. This is pure gold.
I've really enjoyed your tutorials Mr. Finch. You're a talented artist and an equally talented instructor.
I need to try and copy more of your torsos, especially the ribcage and muscles around that arch (abs, serratus). They're just too awesome.
This was the video I didn’t know I needed so much. Insanely helpful David! Thank you!
That's a really awesome video man! The kind of you never forget, infinite possibilities. I love it. A big thanks for that, it I'll help me a lot.🙏🏿
5:20 It looks similar but still noticeably different, like in-between frames compared to a key frame.
This is perfect timing for me. I am doing something like this and it is good to see a video that taught me a better way to do this. Thanks!
thank you so much David!
I enjoyed viewing the video drawing from references. Thank you for the tips😊
This helped me a lot on shading, which has been a major roadblock for me. I just haven't been able to find a technique that matches with my style, I'm satisfied with. It just feels off and not three dimensional mentally. I'm going to have to dig through my collection and get to work. Thanx!
Awesome tutorial. Definitely some great things to try!
Amazing demonstration. Time to take this to my arsenal!
The end result is amazingly good
Another great video Dave! Highly informative 🤘🏻
Amazing, David..thanks for sharing!
you are the savior of so many artists included me
Great lesson, David! I'll definitely think about it the next time I'm drawing.
you gave me so much energy to draw thank you so much!!!!!!💖💖
FInch is the real MVP
Great tutorial Dave, very helpful thanks!
Interesting way of studying:) I'll try it thank you for this tutorial Mr finch 🍀
Thanks, this is so enlightening and helpful!
Thank you for the video. It is greatly appreciated.
super helpful, thank you🤟
This was super helpful
When i was starting drawing these type of videos used to make me pessimistic and feel as if i didn't made any progress, i felt like a loser for not doing my best, now that i understood that this is what every artist in history as been through, this type of videos give me motivation, make me think "it is possible and i can go even beyond"
Even tho i'm still a beginner i really appreciate with all my heart these kind of videos, most people just show photos or a speedup video of the drawing, i can't explain why but saying the process on relative real time is what makes me feel inspired, maybe because i can feel that wonderful artists as you are as human as i am, maybe i'm being kinda overdramatic but that's how works for me
LOL! Not laughing at you. Laughing at the misconception the internet gave you about drawing and references. People that do photorealistic art. What are they doing? One to one copies while looking at a reference. Everyone uses reference all the time. Anyone who says they aren't or that they don't is a lair. Some use it less for SOME of the things they draw but still go back to it and will ALWAYS use it for things they aren't as familiar with. Awesome you are drawing! Hope you stay motivated!
New tutorial! I love these. Could you please make a detailed tutorial on drawing clothing in the future, David? I really suck at drawing clothed figures.
He actually has made a video... Just search "David Finch Clothing tutorial" U will find it😃
If you think of a tutorial for him to do, just know he probably already did it before asking lol.
This is brilliant. Thank you
awesome vid i cant wait to use this technique with favourite artist and comics
Thanks DAVID!
Thank you!
Thank you man
Hey David thanks for the awesome content it’s really nice insightful and helps me loads thanks for doing this for us all and not hiding it behind a pay wall, I have a question though would you ever consider drawing the space marines from warhammer 40k?
Thank you Very Much Sir 👍🏻
Really great video!
Thanks David !!!!!
I've been trying this technique..it works
I'm so glad I subbed to your channel, you've got some great ideas that inspire me to keep drawing. In fact I'd say that YOUR drawings are what I use to "copy"...hope that's okay!
Thank you for using "Frankenstein" as a verb. @19:40😆
You are great artist, hi from argentina, Rosario.
Thank you 👍
Yessss! I found an excuse for why my copy of art doesn’t look the same!! (My old excuse was I have a skill issue)
David not only are you an incredible teacher, your voice is just soo soothing
Great video David. I also like to take film stills and work from them from Iconic films. I pause Blu-rays and sketch scene composition from them.
Great video David, I think this technique will help a lot of inexperienced artists - whether they want a career in comics or illustration.
very good info!
Great video man
Amazing video Dave!
It is good the way how to get references or inspirations from other artist, great vídeo thanks,i Will be practicing like that, greetings from Perú 😺 ,i AM part of the flock😀
Thanks David 👍🏻💯 you're the best man...an inspiration on my art for ever.. I take photo reference so I don't get accused...but sometimes I'll use a pose from another artist depending on the character...but I definitely disguise it so know one will know. I mean, how many poses can the human body do with out being accused of stealing...like Greg land is a great artist but he gets alot of flack for "stealing" 🤷🏻♂️
great instructions, thanks!!
Awesome vid, Dave. I'd also suggest trying to flip the figure. Draw it reverse from the one you see. I like the idea of trying new thumbnails with a given pose and looking at what parts of other artists you like.
Wow that's awesome
Very helpful
I’ve been doing this a lot lately. Now I have half the guilt
really cool...kind relaxing...I grow up copying comics for study,....still like to sometimes, I see now I should been doing this
This is a great Tutorial.
Amazing video!
This should be titled "So you REALLY want to learn to draw? This is ACTUALLY how." Seriously drawing this way taught me 1000 times more then drawing cubes and cylinders ever did. Yes you need to understand objects in space but this is how you go from box mannequins to actual figures.
Can't wait 'till Greg Land sees this video
David Finch est le meilleur.
Thank you
Glad you made this vid. Straight lifting is boring. (I'm also bored by obvious tracings of photos.)
This is so good.
