    go ubuntu if you just need a desktop OS, go arch linux if you want to learn your OS, and when you get to the cloud like EC2 run whatever the latest linux OS they provide because it will have all the libraries you need to integrate with their other cloud services. I also use the "node:12" docker image for building code on gitlab-ci. Well, at least thats some of the distros that I have chosen.

    My opinion (I run Mint/Cinnamon):
    - If you're coming from Windows and generally like it, and want everything to work "out of the box," choose Mint with the Cinnamon desktop. It's got the exact same desktop layout and taskbar, though the icon graphics are completely different.
    - If you're coming from Mac and generally like it, and want everything to work "out of the box," choose Ubuntu with Gnome. It's got a very similar desktop, though again the icon graphics are different.
    - If you're setting up a server, and you have the Linux experience to set it up and maintain it, then choose Ubuntu Server Edition. It comes with only the terminal, no desktop GUI.
    - If you're corporate wonk setting up in an Enterprise environment who wants your hand held by a corporate buddy, choose Red Hat.
    - If you have an ancient PC that nothing will run on, choose antIX.

      Mint doesn't come with GNOME out of the box. I remember trying to install GNOME over Mint. It wasn't newbie friendly, and when I got through extensions, the experience wan't worth it. Frankly, unless you're using Ubuntu, GNOME isn't mac friendly by default. Better luck with elementaryOS.

Yes I found after I figured this problem (SSL Handshake error 5), that nagios site had documentation. But had to use tcpdump why it was failing. (We only had one port opened in fw, as per installation instructions of NRPE, so was hard to know why connection was failing).

    I am not an IT person but I use Linux as my home desktop. I clicked on this video because I thought it was about desktops. Anyways, wow I learned a lot. Never knew any of this very insightful awesome video. I have to agree with you on Ubuntu people in Linux complain about it however it *JUST WORKS ALL DAY LONG* From a desktop perspective its just easy to use and incredibly reliable. You wont have printer issues, wifi etc. etc. just click and go. Updates are not going to break anything. It just works boring like you said. Lol They are all the same as well this one uses apt that one uses rpm blah blah blah. However, Ubuntu is just solid!

    • @Nerdamania
      @Nerdamania 5 лет назад

      It does not run all day long at least not in my experience as a desktop user. As a server Distro I would Install Debian Stable or CentOS. Those are distributions that only use packages that are well tested and therefore very stable. In home usage the distribution does not really matter so much.

    I've tried so many distros but overall ubuntu seems to have the best overall support. However currently using openSuse and I have to say it's really nice so far.

    • @DJRYGAR1
      @DJRYGAR1 5 лет назад

      Yep, There may be thousands different linux distros, but when you want to settle and have something reliable, with large knowledge base and company behind it that takes care about "boring" stuff and not only putting flashy themes, there is really just few to choose from. Centos/Redhat, Debian/Ubuntu (and all its derivatives including Mint and POP_OS) and SUSE/Opensuse and maaayyybe Fedora (popular in nonprofits/education due to licensing policy). I know people are religious about Manjaros/MXes/Gentoos and others, but that is all just fun for geeks, not something for professional use or for someone who wants just a system to work and not mess with it.
      I was really impressed with Pop os. Should be same thing as Ubuntu, but it really is not - more polish, more kinks removed/fixed. I tried to install some linux distro on new Ryzen system with UEFI. Guess what, most of installers I downloaded (incl. ubuntu) just crashed without even getting to live environment that would allow me, a noob, to launch installer from desktop. Only SUSE and POP behaved properly. Live example: MX linux people brag about systemd horrors, but pop_os used it to even replace grub and it just works. MX while being 'proper systemd-free linux' crashes, unholy POP works. Now, when I sense religious (ie GEntoo/Arch/MX) vibe on distro's forums, I know to steer away. Stick to pros.

    • @NicB-Creations
      @NicB-Creations 5 лет назад

      @@DJRYGAR1 I tried POP_OS, seemed a little laggy to me and didn't really like the overal theming. Wasn't all that impressed with it. After that tried Voyager Linux. Very nice looking and functional ubuntu based distro. Thought I found my home untill for some unknown reason it suddenly would only boot through the recovery menu. Backed up all my files to another drive and now giving openSuse a shot. So far so good but quite different from everything I've used before. Yast is really nice though.

    • @DJRYGAR1
      @DJRYGAR1 5 лет назад

      @@NicB-Creations I like opensuse, but I always end up screwing something and not knowing how to fix it - deleting it and going somewhere else. Theming of POP is off putting - I agree, but that is first thing I always change anyway. Still, I think that distros with proper companies behind them are the way to go. Opensuse is one of those. Opensuse is different, but they have very interesting tools and approach to things (open build studio, automated distro testing, included nice tools etc). Also good implementation of KDE which is something I like.

    • @NicB-Creations
      @NicB-Creations 5 лет назад

      @@DJRYGAR1 Well, I hate to say it but I'm going back to Voyager Linux. So far my favorite and very underrated distro imho. EDIT: Jep, after some basic personal tweaks Voyager is awesome. It's like Ubuntu but with a much nicer layout. After installing the nvidea drivers it's smooth as butter and looks more sleek and modern than any other distro out there.

    • @DJRYGAR1
      @DJRYGAR1 5 лет назад

      @@NicB-Creations I will probably settle with POP and try to install KDE on top of it and see how it goes. I was really impressed by the speed they fixed new ryzen booting problems. I can make desktop look sleek myself, from distro I expect hardware support that I cannot improve myself. Not sure what you ment that POP is slow, to me it is blazing fast - probably depends of hardware config. (TBF all distros are fast for me)
