We decided to test out some vintage hockey skates and find out what exactly has changed. I picked up some vintage skates from the 1800's, 1920's, 1960's and 1970's. We compare these to my Bauer 1S hockey skates.

No; the pros didn't wear cheap, worn-out leather skates like the ones in this video. They wore expensive skates, such as CCM Tacks, made from kangaroo leather (the strongest leather in existence), that wasn't yet worn out, so it still had plenty of ankle support.

Had completely forgotten that I played in Langes for years. The inner boot was everything. I don't remember my feet ever hurting back then, but now, even having perfectly fitted bauers, I still don't find them as comfortable...but probably because time on ice is a fraction of what it once was. Thanks for the flashbacks guys.

  • @hckyroxs8019
    @hckyroxs8019 6 лет назад +3

Once we were playing some pick up hockey and one of the older guys was wearing a pair of skates from the 60s/70s and when he went to turn BOOM, his foot broke through the boot and left him standing in his sock on the ice with the top of the boot still tied on to his foot. It was hilarious to see but thank heavens they improved the structure of skates.

I started playing hockey in high school in a pair of my Dad's skates in 1969. The skates were probably from the late 30's. That first practice, I spent most of my time just trying to stand up. I wasn't a very good skater to begin with so they didn't help. My Dad took me to the skate shop and I picked up a pair of Black Diamond Bauer skates. What a difference it was to have some ankle support !

Nice video.CCM added "the plastic stopper" 1:40 on the rear of the tube skates after Bernie Geoffrion got his tendon severed in a game in 1959. Skates added more leather in the back say after 1959 then they capped the tube with the plastic tip. The Ancient skates when brand new were much stiffer than the stuff you tested thus its is really a tough comparison. A hockey skating book from about 1970s says two pairs of skates per season thus I think older skates did not last as long too. (Ice Hockey Skating - Harry Brown, Ph.D. - 1972 ). A great vintage book on power skating, oddly very little mention is about radius of hollow of the blades

For the leather skates you need to find new or like new ones, and also, find some good quality ones, such as CCM Tacks. The leather in the ones you bought had long since lost all of its support due to wear and tear. New ones would have a lot more support. And obviously they need to be a good fit.

It's a kind of neat to see this, but with that said different designs of skates require different muscles to use. Bauer currently has developed a 400 gram pair of skates, which is almost half as light as the best out there now, and the reason they won't put this on the market right away is that they will have to incrementally make the skates lighter so it's not too radical of shock for players and they start giving them bad reviews.

what I find interesting is that figure skates are still mostly leather. We have wooden bottoms, (or carbon in some cases) but there is still a ton of support with different layering techniques. I wouldn't dare use vintage skates though because my ankle would straight-up collapse. My hats off to them being able to skate at all without ankle support.

My dad has a pair of these from playing ice hockey in the 50s! Had the same tips on putting them in the bathtub and walking around with them. He said they were a nightmare to take a puck in because they were just leather, and that the back heel that pokes out was like a spear that would impale you. He started playing beer league again in his 60s and those were the skates he used for his first couple games. All the guys on the ice were trying to buy them from him for the nostalgia, haha.

I always had good skates growing up in the 60s and 70s, Tacks and Bauers, but my first pair of Langes, the exact ones in this video, were game changers. I held on to them well past my playing years until, believe it or not, they were stolen! I would buy another pair even now, I’ve gone back to the modern Tacks, and they are great hockey skates, but nothing beats the combination of comfort and support I got in those Langes!

noticed that the oldtime skates forced them to skate upright. My mother got some skates from her aunt when I was a kid. They looked like the 1920's skates. I couldn't stand on them and thought there was something wrong with me. Later in life I got decent CCM skates and was surprised at how easy skating is.

Old time leather boots like that will always feel horrible the first few times you wear them, regardless of size, at least until you soften up the leather and they form to your foot. Get some good leather conditioner, some new laces, and do that bathtub trick you mentioned, and it will make a world of difference. Of course, you'll still not have any (or much) ankle support.

Cecily Erker You really don‘t. That‘s just the way it was. If you watch video of even elite hockey players from back in the day, they‘re skating like these guys.

Pavel Bure wore Micron Quadraflexes in his rookie NHL season, sometimes. They were a plastic ski boot/old school Rollerblade type of skate like those Langes.

Yes... we used to dunk our skates in hot water and then lace them up and let them dry on our feet in the 90's. I feel old now, it seems like just yesterday.

Those 1950's skates is all I had to play with in the late 70's early 80's and a lefty stick (Im a right) because thats all I could find. Sucked not having any cash to play a fun sport. Now I help kids by coaching inline, (no ice programs in our area) we do our best to get them gear if needed and keep them safe. Hoping for a lottery win so we can really get our program running!! Funny thing is I still shoot with a lefty stick. LOL Thanks for sharing!

When I was in 7th grade, I actually had a pair of Lange Lazer 2 skates. They were what you had to have if you wanted to be one of the cool kids.

CCM Super Tack´s were the skates to have when I was a kid in the 60´s. My parents didn´t have much money but my father loved ice hockey and bought me a pair when my feet had stopped growing. Although moderen skates are much stiffer and better to skate in, they actually don´t keep sharp as long as my old Tack´s do. I love those old Super Tack´s and will never part with them. Thank you for the video. I really enjoyed it!

I brought some old Langes in to get sharpened and Glen Sharpley was amazed at how nice it was to sharpen them. He was so used to cheap steel on new skates and he really noticed a difference on the steel used on older skates. I could even hear a difference while he sharpened them.

Cool video. Back in the 70s breaking in a pair of Bauer supreme 96s you fill them up with water let them soak for about 15 minutes lace them up onto your bare feet and then you went to sleep. Find morning they were formed to your feet

I wore the “Rockets” 2-3 seasons when I was 10-12. You bought skates small, so they were extra tight and your toes got numb avoiding the pain of freezing feet!

Currently I don't lace the top two eyelets for the advances of a deep knee bend so I think the flex in the Langes would be interesting to try

You can skate at the highest levels in molded plastic skates. My first decent pair of hockey skates when I was a kid were Bauer Turbos, which are essentially the same thing as those Lange skates, except the blade holders are plastic. I used them for 4 years (two pairs of them, size 7 for the first 2 years and size 9 for the next 2 years), and those are the skates that I got to be a good skater on.

    WOW.
    Amazing vintage skates.
    I prefer the tube blades.
I had Pepsi Bauer tubes when I was a child.
It feels better for me, for body alignment, but I did ballet most of my life.
Fyi... I did try figure skates ONCE....
    I almost killed myself.

I are Bauer Supreme 90 ones but I got in Canada back in 1973 I still got them but the bottom is pulling of the boot , so now they're just for display and to be an antique , they even had kangaroo leather but you can't get any more I don't think ?

SKATES CHANGE SO MUCH. I started skating in January and used rental skates the first two times but figured if I was going to go every weekend I should just buy my own, and I only bought some recreational figure skates from Dicks and it was immediately so much easier. Of course it was still a learning experience but rentals are sooo horrible and the vintage leather skates reminded me of the rentals at my rink.
