This looks like a ghibli movie. Gorgeous.
because it is ghibli. XD
Stkrdknmibalz it’s actually not. They helped develop the first but didn’t in this sequel. Still feels very Ghibli though 😃
The first was. It was way better.
🤔
@@OSTOwnage The character designer for this game worked in character design at Ghibli, so that makes it Ghibli enough, for me at least.
The only review that matters
I have to agree. I mean if the game is easy, how is that a negative? It's like every JRPG they review is expected to have Dark Souls difficulty.
Scores don't determine how good a review is, there is reviews that give good scores to critically claimed games but still suck because they cover very little or do a bad job explaining why the game is good.
And people found the stuff that they covered in that review bad.
Amen.
E1ite Yoshi I agree. I actually found the first Ni No Kuni really frustrating because of the amount of grinding that was needed..It got to the point where I spent ages leveling up by attacking Toko's (familiars that give you a tone of xp) and powered through the game on level eighty or something so I could just enjoy the story.
Wow! Super hyped to play this. 9.5 makes me so happy!
Aditya Iyer new rating system is great
yesssss
I was so looking forward to this game but now im really disappointed i cant stand town building and management in any game
Its too bad IGN review bombed it
And it's a Damiani review, and he always seems to be super critical, so it must be amazing, haha.
If there's someone I trust to be a critic and maybe a bit of a nitpicker, it's Damiani, so to hear him give so much praise only fills my heart with joy. Great job
Subscribed! I've watched a fair few reviews for this game already, then came across this one which is easily the most informative. I had already pre-ordered the game, but it's reassuring to have seen such a great review. Many of the mainstream review sites (I'll mention no names) have barely skimmed over many details, and I'm drifting further from them now. Thanks for this, I'll be sure to check out your reviews first in future.
Easy Allies (formerly Gametrailers), best in the biz
If you like the look of this game, please go and play Dark Chronicle. It's a PS2 game also made by Level5 and Ni No Kuni looks like it borrows heavily from that game. You won't regret it.
Oblivion I played it and hope it will come to Switch because I dont have much time to play on PS4
Dark Cloud 2 outside of Japan.
Brennan Cortez Dark Chronicle in Europe
In North America, I should have said.
I immediately thought of Dark Cloud 2 as soon as I saw the Kingdom building part of this game, although Dark Cloud 2's building aspect is a lot more in depth.
This review was more important than most given the quality wasn't guaranteed. Thankfully this game and review lived up to the hype.
30 Hours! Sounds great to me, will be done in time for Far Cry. Mass Effect 2 was around 30 hours as well.
30 hours is good enough when you don’t have the endless grinding. Awesome rpgs takes less than that such as Chronno Trigger and Parasite Eve
Except its way more than double that if you dont just blitz your games to rush and move on to the next thing to consume
WHAT!! 9.5??! I didn't want to buy this game but I trust your reviews a lot.... time to find some money
Wtf! An RPG and classic RTS in one game? I'm sold!
Can't wait to receive my King's Edition and Collector's Edition! Great review which made me even more hype for the game!
Don't forget that Paid DLC (season pass) is coming soon. New story, New dungeons etc.
Awesome, ordered the kings addition just now :3
i love you pig
admit it cause of those small creatures.
Super excited for this, but wish they didn't use the chibi designs for the over-world/skirmishes.
Alsop's Gaming while I can agree I dislike the art style, after playing world of Final Fantasy, I'll tell you that you get used to it eventually.
I got about halfway through WoFF and gave up unfortunately. Really tried to like it. I also tried to play as the non-chibi versions as much as possible. But I hated that transitioning back and forth was an integral mechanic to the game. Really took me out of the experience.
Alsop's Gaming I guess there's a limit to what we can accept and we have different limits, while I honestly think Chibi style stuff looks dumb, if I really try its easy enough to get passed. I just fail to see a reason to make "cute" things in what should be a more adult game. WoFF was aimed at younger people so I guess I can get it on that side, and I get that the sprites are probably easier to animate and produce, but real praise comes when you do difficult things and do them well. So I'm with you on not liking it, but I doubt it'll detract from my experience too greatly.
the only review i can trust on internet
They are so accurate when reviewing games. If they say its a good game then most likely, its a good game. Back during gametrailers they rarely gave 9's so im expecting this game to be that good.
Reno Sacino acg
Lol
God i cant wait for this game.
Of course you can't. Of course you can't ...WEAAAAAAAB
30 hours. Good, good.
louisgworld I know that was refreshing to hear since for whatever reason I always spend double the standard time it says. 60-80 hours can mean 120+ for me!
bettergetdave Same. I'm super thorough with my exploration. Helps with trophies and such but it really inflates my playtime.
I actually am not happy about it... I want more enjoyment per dollar I spend. 60 hours is the bare minimum for an hour per dollar ratio, but I spent 80, so hopefully it'll give me that much.
30 hours seems like the perfect amount for an RPG. These days, after 30 hours in a game, I am ready to move on. I love long jrpg games like Persona 5, but wish it cut down the fat.
"60 hours is the bare minimum for an hour per dollar ratio"
If you're an idiot, I guess.
I want to build a kingdom where everyone can live happily ever after! I will unite all the kingdoms in peace!
...goes to annihilate everything in his path! Typical tyrant!
hahaha, no it doesn't. Every type of regime ever had that mentality. It is the concept of uniting everyone under one rule. Every king or emperor on the planet had the same goal. To say that communism is the root of all evil is just brainwash propaganda. You picked that up at some point in your life. Many people have, after the fall of the communistic regime. It is the way of the winners to discredit the losers, by showing their worst sides and then add some crazy shit on top of that. You know - the winner gets to write the history. Capitalists are responsible for just as many atrocities as any other, we just don't talk about it. There is nothing wrong with communism, capitalism, fascism, tyranny or any regime. The problem is in the humans - give them power and they do unspeakable things.
Like the do-good prince Evan here. I have been slicing and dicing all types of free roaming monsters in the name of Good. But I noticed right away that the Pirates on our side are all good guys, while the Bandits that we are killing are all bad guys... because they rob people.
As of right now, This review for this game got 40K more views than gamespots review. Today is 03-20-2018
Time: 12:13 pm IN. USA
based on what you said on the review I think a 9.5 feels oddly generous. But I trust in the professional reviews you guys deliver~ game was preordered anyways ;P
Never preorder.
Pre order lmao
First I've seen from this channel and immediately recognized the voice - subscribed and I look forward to watching your reviews on future titles , glad you are back in the reviewing world! Welcome back and best of luck!!
Cool. I'm convinced to pick it up now. Hopefully I'll like it even more than the first.
Glad to hear it's a bit shorter than the average jrpg too.
Best channel to review video games. Their review are somewhat longer than most. They are detailed and cover everything!
I don't know what Damiani is talking about. The music is absolutely masterful.
CAN'T WAIT
I didn’t know this channel existed until now. Glad you guys are here to fill that GameTrailers-shaped void in my life.
You guys absolutely REKTED IGN`s review in every sense possible..
I know it’s not always possible but can’t tell you guys how huge it is to have the review up early when the embargo is lifted. Makes it so much easier to spread the word!
I have the first game but still haven't played it. I feel like I'm seriously missing out but my backlog is massive and I do what I can to get through it. Some day!
I loved the first one. It was one of the rare RPG's that i actually finished.
The Game Grinder same, I started it but didn't really like the little avatars you use in battle so haven't gone back to it yet.
+Mike Clarke The second one might be more to your liking then. The familiar/Pokemon aspect to the game was fun, but I'm glad to see it replaced with something new for this game.
Bloody useless yeah for sure, I already pre-ordered it :)
Same category.
wow that's a really high score. this games been chilling in my backlog for a little while but I think I'll play it
I've got about 22-25 hours into this game and just got to the middle of the map in Hydropolis. At first, I literally walked everywhere, so that added time. I explored a lot and ended up in some places with some high level monsters lol. I think if I get 40-50 hours in this one like I did the first game, I'll be happy.
This is a great review. I was VERY hesitant when they introduced the new battle system and skirmishes, took out Familiars and added Higgledies, and made Evan look very feminine... But, after playing it, my thoughts completely changed. I love the combat and feel like a badass. Higgledies add great depth to the fights and have saved me quite a few times. Evan is a solid lead. The whole kingdom building and citizen mechanic is my favorite part of the game. I spend a lot of time tracking down new citizens so I can maximize my IQ in my kingdom.
Overall, I think this game is easy for new/casual players to pick up but in depth enough to keep JRPG fans satisfied. Easy 9/10 for me.
I must say you have the best ni no kuni review ! still have nostalgia of the old game trailers reviews .
keep up the great work
Not sure if this is relevant but
1) kingdom building
2) how you're royalty and there is an uprising
3) A character that gets transported to your world
is very much like Dark Cloud 2 which is unsurprisingly also by Level 5 but hey it could be a coincidence
30 hours is fine, a lot of these jrpgs devs much asume all gamers have no life and can just spend 60+ hours on a game with ease
You can artificially make Revenant Kingdom last 60 hours. . No fast travel. 😆
Uh dude you know some gamers could be devs and QA people who play games like nothing....it's not hard to spend 60 hours on a game if yiu play let's say maybe 1 or 2 hours every 2 or 3 days..
I fell off after needing to gather 20+ more citizens after water city arch.. I was so invested in the main story that being forced to halt for pointless task took the wind out of my sails.
same here
Another great game... sony i have a life u know
Sandesh Gharat after 200 hours in mhw 100+ in persona 5 100+ in ffxv ive come to the conclusion that they dont care....they just...dont.
This isnt sony as its on pc as well
that's why the game isn't as long as say Diablo.
J Po those are rookie numbers, you got to pump those hrs up!
Thanks Sony, Loved playing this on my PC.
May i just add that I am happy to listen to the old GT Voiceover again
Metacritic is at 85 for this game right now, so people seem to be positive to very positive in this case.
Loved the first game, but for some reason never finished it (got like 30 hours in, I believe).
The difficulty seems to be a point of discussion, as the game seems a bit on the easier side.
To me, that aint a huge deal as long as it plays well, and it seems like it does.
And those graphics! Wow.
I'll take graphics like these over a photo-realistic game any day.
I could listen to this guy review games all day. lol
Definitely buying this game day 1.
the difficulty and lenght saddens me a little...that aside, hype AF for this. thanks for the review
Glad it's as good as it looks, just disappointed they apparently cut story content for DLC. I'll be happy to pay $60 when the deluxe edition or whatever they call it goes on sale, though.
Also, good review. Feels very Damiani yet not at the same time. Best in the biz.
I'm at 34 hours and only at the beginning of chapter 5! Although I'm the kind of player that enjoys exploring every nook and cranny, and leveling up my kingdom to get better weapons and items before rushing to the end.
Did the host of this channel a formerly work for Game Trailers? The voices for the reviews of the two sound similar.
Woah! That's so cool. I really missed listening to his reviews. Subbed!
So glad the star system is dead.
9.5! Awesome.
This would've been a 5 star...
Oscar Magaña
4.5 bruh
or a 4.5. The point is that 9.5 is closer to what they actually wanted to give it than either 4.5 or 5.
And a number makes any difference why?
Evan's accent and delivery sounds like he came right out of a Charles Dickens novel lol
Played until chapter 6, and gave up. This game has so much grind, and so many fetch quests is not even funny. But I think that the straw that broke the camel's back was the fact that we have to recruit to level up the kingdom, and to recruit first you have to go on some fetch quest. Repeat it 25/50 times. Boring af
Welcome to jrpg land lool
Just got this on sale for 9$, i loved the first game
I have to say this again. This review was one of the best they have done. Great job explaining the game.
Studio Ghibili I LoVE u
After watching this review i decided to buy the game. Im about 10-15 hours in and i just cant get into it. I usually like jrpgs too. Its just missing something to keep me hooked. To each their own i guess
I agree this review is by no means an accurate reflect of what this game is, super boring story.
Having finished it yeah the story isn't great, imo the very best part storywise was the very beginning with that huge event, that kept me wondering wtf was going on for long enough to get my kingdom. After that upgrading your kingdom is fun enough to keep the game going but that was really the only worthwhile bit.
Yeah, you can't trust the reviews by these guys. IGN did a better job
kseries1981 lol
Are there different costumes to collect in the game, or do you exclusively just wear the standard outfits we've only seen in the trailers?
Not my style of game, I don't like the actiony combat and the pikmin. I enjoyed the grinding and capturing monsters of the first but I understand why people didn't
lacunarikain2 Same. The first is one of my favorite games of all time. So disappointed they changed the combat and got rid of the familiars. I’ll be passing on this one.
lacunarikain2 Really you don’t get how people don’t enjoy grinding? in the first game i had to grind 10 fucking times for like 4 hours each time i grind it was terrible and normal enemies give jack shit for exp the only way to level up normally is to grind on tokos and them appearing is like what a 30% chance of appearing and most sidequests are the same shit and repetitive i ended up just skipping all of the sidequest’s text the only ones that are fun are the post game ones where you fight recolors of all the bosses again and even that is lazy as shit since they’re all just recolors in my opinion the first game had a hell of alot more flaws than the second game.
Same, I lost interest in this one. The 1st was my all time fav, especially how the capturing monsters whereas this one completely removed it. Which turn out this is a big disappointment. I would rated 8 at best since I completed it.
I was excited. After watching this my excitement is off the scale! CAN'T WAIT FOR FRIDAY. :) :)
Having played the game the excitement was for nothing, the game lacks the charm of the orginal and is far too easy... I have oithers issues with it as well. Disapointed.
Is the first game on ps4
Yes. You'll need PS Now to play it.
rob19ny ok thanks
Its PS3 if i'm not mistaken
first game was made for the DS and remade for the ps3
rob19ny thank
Great review! Thanks!
This review has me a bit skeptical. It's sounds too gushy to the point that things like a 30 hour story and easy combat are suddenly a good thing? Sounds like there's a lot of shortcomings that you expect us to just ignore.
Very informative review. It proved helpful in deciding if to buy this game.
After putting 110 hours into Persona 5. I am actually glad this is around 30 hours. Great review! I can't wait to pick this up, this week.
Since this game seems to have non-existant hype, I predict it'll go on sale rather quickly. I'll probably wait to grab this one in a sale.
neogauntlet it won’t
omensoffate okay, maybe it wont go on sale "rather quickly" but it will go on sale eventually and im willing to wait.
Thankfully not all gamers think that way and some like to support studios for making great games, instead of looking at the videogame release calendar like a stockmarket.
Terence Caron I understand the need to support artists who create great, enjoyable content, but not everyone can afford to buy releases at full price all the time.
It got low scores on the more reliable sources so yes it won't sell well for sure
This is the voice of gametrailers. GREATNESS!!!
... iv always wanted the game trailers guy back. Mind blown
4:25 Ugandan Knuckles meets Lisa Simpson?
Well it sucks if they used easy action combat instead of combat system that is challenging and requires you to think more.
I'm fine for the main story only being 30 hours because I really don't have a lot of time to sit down and play a game. Plus most of the games that have longer stories there's a lot of filler or grinding or both and I really don't have time for that. I have it preordered and paid in full and am excited for it.
The story is 30 hours? I'm not sure i like that. Hopefully there's a balance that ends up as me beating the game at around 55 or more hours. I actually perfer grinding and long adventures.
Im not sure myself if its just the story or everything all together , but i think its more likely just the main story.
Depends how bulked up the side content is, Yakuza 6 is around that long but has some cool side activities.
I for one will enjoy the rts and kingdom building.
Also persona 5 needed to be that long, you need time to relax and build up relationships and so forth between dungeon stress of trying to do a dungeon in one sitting (well to the treasure, then another for boss)
Persona 5 is perfect on pacing, exactly where it should be given the gameplay style of management, relationship building, and dungeons.
I mean it's a complicated game that I still felt overwhelmed with even after that long tutorial.
Also don't you mean ng+ gym juicing period?
Quality over quantity?
Persona 5 and Yakuza 0 are super long and are more quality than short games with vastly bigger budgets.
Can't wait for you guys to review The Alliance Alive.
Is there a way to make the battles harder? i rather not play sesame street...
war weeny then don’t play the game
Hoping for a hard mode to start with here also.
Yeah, I agree. Where's the fun if there's no challenge?
You guys hate on IGN for calling it too easy, yet you come over here and start complaining for a hard mode. Hahahaha! !!
Challenging combat is the most important thing in a JRPG. Without it, all other systems are unnecessary, since there is no reason to power up your character.
Let's hope the combat is at least enjoyable; otherwise the only draw of this game is its narrative.
It's Dark Cloud with a Ghibli theme, I love it.
i disagree with this entire review and that is a first time.
Actually the best description I can think of when it comes to combat and gameplay is making this hybrid between White Knight Chronicles and Nino Kuni. Both games were incredible but they don't mix as well together. I really wish they would rerelease White Knight Chronicles or make another one. Another issue he talked about was the ease of combat in this game, White Knight Chronicles had a very good difficulty and this game does not.
You guys must have written that review on acid. Except for its musical score, this game is deeply flawed. The combat is shallow, unengaging, and most of the systems (weapon slots, "pikmin", power meter) are completely pointless for 95% of the game. All you do in the early game is mash buttons, encounters turn into tedium after half an hour in the first open world section. The story and characters are boring and under-developed - the most interesting part to it happening in the opening cinematic. How anyone could say that this game was "brilliant" and an "improvement" in literally every department over its predecessor is completely beyond me. Did we play the same game?
Thank you. I finished this today and was super underwhelmed.
Sounds like everything you mentioned were subjective, personal preferences. Good thing you don't review games.
I'm really looking forward to picking this one up. Ni No Kuni was one of my absolute favorites of last generation.
I'm so excited to play this!
I would get this on the Switch.
metalmilitia89 too bad it'll never happen
It doesn't look dat demanding maybe like 900p 30fps
JBlizzyFan Why not? Wasn’t the first Ni No Kuni originally on DS?
JBlizzyFan Be careful, people said the same thing about the Crash remakes.
metalmilitia89
Totes bro.... such a missed opportunity 😢
sounds like an absolute dream of a JRPG. Had a horrendous week, and feel super shitty so hoping that my 4 week old baby will let me play this over the weekend.
How can you give It a 9.5 with those easy battles? Takes away the challenge :(
Stacee Jaxx mario odyssey circlejerk got 9-10 and was super easy
Brad Hamilton Mario is a platform game not an RPG ...two very different genres. I would rather have a difficult RPG that prioritizes tactics over colorful pikmins but whatever at least It seems good
Maybe there is a challenge in the optional content, and they just made the story less grindy. I don't know anything about the first game, but bosses that have a billion health and basic AI aren't fun, bosses that have a challenging AI, that don't require me to luck my way through, are fun. That is one of the reasons monster Hunter is doing well right now, and the whole RNG thing is a big reason why fighting Kirin sucks in said game. You can only roll into that 4th horizontal lightning stream that wasn't supposed to be there so many times.
Stacee Jaxx Catherine is platformer.. And has high difficulty.. Mario is rubbish compared to it then? Biased, double standard.. But ppl are entitled to their own taste and opinion anyway. So, ending rant :)
Because not everyone wants to play a super difficult game. The casual gamer audience is much, much larger than the hardcore audience. There are games out there for you if you can't enjoy something without dying 50 times in the space of 5 minutes.
The only things which lets this game down and in a way spoils it which could have been taken away in the space of it being pushed back three times, is the constant need to put in real life mobile apps into a JRPG. For a start, Leafbook... I don't see why we need a Facebook type thing in it.
The chibi skirmishes which is pretty much clash of clans, kingdom builder which is like any other mobile strategy game where you build a kingdom and maintain it. Also the puzzle floors where you have to solve the riddles with the platform steps disappearing, there are also many mobile phone puzzle games like that too.
The Higgledies are cute yes, but there is no need for them to be in the game, you don't even need them in combat with you as the battles are way too easy, especially as Evan has his wand which fires out elemental attacks at the enemies and drops them in one or two moves, so to have elemental Higgledies is complete waste of time. They're pretty much just for merchandise purposes for people to want to buy little figures of them.
The Lisa Simpson look alike fairy was definitely shoe horned into Evans life as opposed to Ollie and Mr Drippy where Mr Drippy served a purpose and had a reason to be there, Lisa Simpson is just there to form a bond with the king which has no emotional value. The characters are ok and the story is a bit bland, but I feel this game has definitely been over hyped and isn't what classic Ni No Kuni is supposed to be. Take out those 'mobile games' within the game and you have a classic JRPG. The scores for this game are definitely over scored. I'd put it under Ni No Kuni 1, and give it a 5/10. It's a shame Ni No Kuni has become like this now. Studio Ghibli should have taken the reigns of this one as it's not a very compelling story, evil guy takes over a kingdom and rebels fight to get it back.
Compare that story with NNK1 and it's loving charm it gives to the player all the way through and you find yourself thinking 'is this it? Is this all they could muster as a sequel after 8 years? There are many stories out there where evil people take over kingdoms' but NNK1 was a fresh new intelligent story which really made you think
I received my kings edition and it’s stunning, but the beginning of the game is a bit awkwardly suggestive, a nuclear weapon goes off in New York and the president gets taken away... kinda feels like today’s North Korea wanting to send a missile to America... Probably best not to put in real life situations with what world leaders want to do to one another in a sweet and innocent game 😕
There is NEVER a good reason to switch to the japanese language, except you understand that language. ^^
More like there is never a good reason not to use the Japanese language.
If not understandable gibberish is your thing...
i dont know, man. i prefer playing a game in its original language. i've played Araya in thai, White Day in korean, Dread Out in indonesian, and of course, any japanese games in japanese. Its gives me more authentic experience, as each languages have their own unique intonation & manner of speaking. =)
Marco Funke best way to study kanji
+Marco Funke Sure there is. Voice acting is a much more prestigious profession in Japan and, as a result, Japanese voice actors are in general far more talented than their western counterparts. Western voice acting philosophy tends to be "get a talented actor for the main character and whoever is cheap to fill out the rest of the cast." Japanese voice casts are much more consistent.
Wtf? Why don't I ever get notifications of your reviews? I'm subbed and clicked the bell thingy.
*sigh* i loved the combat system ni no kuni had. this seems so boring compared to that.
Sacredwalrus the first game combat was boring lol
I liked the pokemon aspect of it. Finding the most powerful monsters and curb stomping everything with them was just so satisfying
Sacredwalrus imo I'm not about turn based. Watching animations play out without any interaction is like watching grass grow. To me I prefer this change
let's agree to disagree :D
I always felt im not utilizing the combat in part one. Like there are these new mechanics that will make combat for interesting towards the end of the game...but there wasnt. Hated that system. Welcoming the new!
This is what a squeal is all about! I loved, loved, loved the first Ni No Kuni back in 2013. I was Breath of Wild ready hype for this sequel. Can't wait to pick it up.
Great review! Question, though. Which "side characters" aren't developed? The playable cast, or the characters you meet in the world (NPCs)?
On my purchase list, though I don't get games with text only scenes. It couldn't have been THAT much more expensive to just record audio for the whole game, right?
Thanks for the review, already bought this. I know I will enjoy this game.
Glad to see this sequel manage to shine alongside the amazing original NNK game. :)
Great review however I loved the soundtrack, I thought it was spot on. I didn't play the first, mind you.
This reviewers voice sounds incredibly familiar. Are Easy Allies the people from Game Trailers?!
Yes
"The main villain appears to be the weakest link at first, but their ultimate motivation, as well as the ultimate resolution to the game, are immensely satisfying." Just like the first game, then, and just what I wanted to hear.
Nice thorough review, thanks!
2:02 Dark vader Mickey has just joined the fight.
You didn't mention the graphics? This game looks absolutely amazing.
I so want ni no kuni 2
i saw the premium edition at target today for 29.00 im going back tomorrow to get it i wanted to see the reviews first
What a great, detailed review. WAY better than IGN's half assed 7.8 review.
I've missed a great kingdom/homebase building like the Suikoden series had. Recruit memorable characters, make your home base fun and lively, upgrade from a base to a castle, etc.
This one look real promising! And for that reason, I'm In!
P.S. Really makes me wonder, was there other games that had features/mechanics like Suikoden series used to have?
Will I *get* this one if I never played the first one? Never been a JRPG guy but this game looks fun and was debating on picking it up.
Im glad to hear it wont take that long to beat it.thanks for the review
I am VERY okay with this game only being 30 hours long. JRPGs are getting way too nuts these days, especially since most of their length is caused by a need to grind and farm.
A little on the easy side, but as it was said, that's because of its great pacing.
EasyAllies are the go-to for JRPG reviews
gf loves nnk2 and is currently playing. That's the most compelling reason.
NG+?
