I’m back. I’m addicted to this video, of this song. I love the whole thing. I have 2 favorite parts, though. When Jackson sings about the towns he is schedule to appear in, and his voice cracks, just a little, on the “I don’t know” line. Hits me in the feels. When David sets his steel slide down, in the dark of the stage, and watch him walk across the stage to sing the falsetto part, then walk across the stage, in the dark, to pick his steel back up, and play his heart out. My insides cheer for him every time. Maybe they make a pill for it….
This final song from the Running On Empty album completes one of the most unique live albums of all time. Jackson Browne recorded all new material for the album. It was done on stage, on the tour bus, in hotel rooms and backstage. Most "live" albums end up being more greatest hits albums that are issued in order to satisfy contract requirements for the record company. JB did something completely different and it's a great album. Not sure why it doesn't show up on best live album lists but it certainly belongs on those lists
Yep. Definitely a unique album. And a classic. I think it's his best complete album. Although it doesn't have my favorite songs by him on it, it's my favorite album.
Those of us fortunate enough to have seen a few hundred great concerts can appreciate the huge efforts it took to produce such awesome shows we were treated to... Thanks to the Roadies.
Jackson Browne, Oct. 23 2023, Pantages theater, He played three hours. David Linley on Lap slide guitar, Hi voice, R.I.P. Next Jackson Browne song Something Fine, The old gray whistle test, live.
Jackson Browne's album 'LATE FOR THE SKY' was deemed culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" by the Library of Congress and selected for preservation in the National Recording Registrey. If you like his lyrics and songwriting, you should listen to some songs from that album., it's a masterpiece: (Fountain of Sorrow - For A Dancer- Late For The Sky - Before the Deluge)
Thank you for your acknowledgement of the lyrics and your understand of the message. This song is so poignant, on several levels. The respect given to the roadies and the audience, something that never gets any airplay. The sincerity as he sings about his love for playing. And the final truth that this moment is fleeting. Enjoy it while it lasts, because the world keeps turning.
I still get goosebumps when this song starts, and I have heard it hundreds of times. And, luckily I got to see Jackson Browne three times in concert, New Hampshire, Pa. and Cali. The gent playing the Lap Guitar with the long hair and the high vocals was David Lindley (RIP), who had his own successful band called El Rayo X. Jackson played this song at all three shows, and rightly so, he knows what makes his career partially possible, the folks behind the scenes, and he wanted to praise them.
Great Song! Jackson Browne started his career writing songs for other artists such as the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (he was briefly a member in 1966) & the Eagles (Browne co-wrote "Take It Easy"). But in the 70's he started recording his own songs. He had a lot of hits 70's-80's such as "Rock Me On The Water", "Here Come Those Tears Again", "Running On Empty", "Somebody's Baby", "Tender Is The Night" etc.
I was glad you noticed the change-up in the beat when they mentioned "disco" but they went through 3 genres in about 6 measures. The other two are more subtle than the "disco" beat. He says, "We've got country and western on the bus, R and B. We got disco, in 8-tracks and cassettes and stereo". They do a country vibe with the country and western line and an R & B vibe with the R & B line.
I am older than dirt and have loved this performance since the album was first released. Your reaction gave Browne's music a new dimension of enjoyment for me. Thank You.
Great reaction! Shout out to the songwriter of the Stay part of this video- the late, great Maurice Williams of Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs. Maurice wrote Stay in 1953 and he and the Zodiacs had a big hit with it in the late 1960’s. Maurice Williams passed away several days ago on August 5, 2024. RIP Mr. Williams.
Keep in mind, the original album recording of The Load Out/Stay is a live recording. I don't remember if it was the first performance of the song, but either way, the audience didn't know what was coming. That energy from the audience is an authentic reaction to a song that most of them never heard before. I really feel like part of the audience anytime I hear this one.
It was indeed the first performance, done at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland, August 27, 1977. I was in the 6th row center. Best concert I ever saw.
Jim Gordon on drums. He was one of the most in demand studio drummers. Youknow him from Clapton's Layla. Sadly, he battled severe mental illness, and the balance of his life was tragic.
I knew Stay by hearing the Four Season's version as a kid. Lead singer Frankie Valli has that high pitched falsetto that our guy here was recreating. This is a rare track where the studio version, is a live version too.
@@chopa2less Yeah, Maurice passed away just a couple of weeks ago. I thought that might get some mention here, but I guess the pick was just a coincidence.
Fifteen studio records that have sold over 18 million copies in the US. Born in Oct of 48, 75 years old. He began writing songs for others, co-writing Take It Easy for The Eagles in 1972 as well as others. He released his first record in 1972 which charted two hits, Doctor My Eyes and Rock Me On The Water. The rest as they say is HISTORY. I have always been partial to his 1974 record Late For The Sky, his 3rd studio release. Some must-listens spanning his 15-record discography: Somebody’s Baby. Doctor My Eyes, Rock Me On The Water, The Pretender, Before The Deluge, and For A Dancer are just a few highlights from this humble and gracious artist of a human being.
The woman who belted out the second chorus of stay was the great Rosemary Butler who sang with JB from the late 70's to the early 80's. She also sang back-up for Linda Ronstadt, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, Neil Young, and Roseanne Cash. Her popularity as a solo act soared when she was hired by Japanese artists and directors to perform in movie soundtracks. Like so many brilliant singers and session musicians, she naver acheived celebrity status but is such a big part of of so many great hits that we all listen to daily.
For the album, this song was recorded live at Saratoga springs amphitheater in 1977. I saw Jackson Browne in 1997 at the same venue, and he celebrated the 20th anniversary of the recording. One of the most professional shows I have ever seen. It may not have rocked like Plant and Page, and Neil Young, but his show is very warm and inviting. Everyone feels like family at the end.
The guy in the blue, the guitar player, does that as joke (His wife is the female singer who does it first) and he is one of the best slide guitar players since George Harrison (unique style).
@@mikefetterman6782 Sorry, don't mean to nit-pik.......as far as I know, David Lindley was married to Joan Darrow & not Rosemary Butler. I totally agree with you about JB concerts. I saw him there in August of 1980, at the time I didn’t know he recorded this song there. We drove out from Boston the night before and arrived in the parking lot to hear the Charlie Daniels Band playing their encore.

❤❤One of my favorite songs. I had the pleasure of hearing them live, when they toured with Tom Petty. I honestly enjoyed JB more. They did this song, and it was emotional. ❤❤
Great pairing of songs - love the way they transition into the second one. Must have been a perfect closer. I'm guessing he probably borrowed the song theme from Bob Seger's "Turn The Page" which came out a few years earlier. Both are great at bringing the listener into a traveling musician's experience of life on the road and all the ups and downs, but Jackson did better by including appreciation of the roadies.
I watched on two meters. Cracked me up. Just a bunch of big kids, having fun. Took me back in time, when the band gathered in the barn for practice, and just had a good time. A cardboard box for a drum? I thought I would die laughing.
Believe it or not, there are some reaction videos made by people unfamiliar with Jackson that do "Load Out" without "Stay", which generates many comments to educate them that this is essentially a single song and must be played together.
You should react to Bob Dylan’s Gospel albums, Slow Train Coming, Saved, Shot Of Love. Specifically ‘Saved’, ‘What Can I Do For You?’, ‘Pressing On’. But they’re all great gospel songs I think you’d enjoy
If the music of the 70s is new to you, Jackson was one of the dominant voices but there were and still are some still singing and keeping roadies at work today! Keep digging!

Saw Jackson Browne live at The Main Point in Bryn Mawr, PA back in the 70's before he became famous. He opened for Bonnie Raitt. Love Jackson Browne❗️❤️ Listen to Somebody's Baby, These Days and Song for Adam!👍❤️
Such a good song. It's amazing that wealthy musicians can make people feel empathy for the drudgery of life on the road. It'd be so easy for us to see them as entitled or spoiled. But that's the power Jackson Browne has - he can make us feel that crushing boredom; that feeling of not having any roots, not even knowing what town you're in.
