Jackson is the conscience of my generation. So prophetic in every word of every song. Dylan and Simon are great wordsmiths but JB provided such deep and psychologically prophetic of the human soul.
This song is magnificent. It covers a topic that i think about so much. And it got me a bit shook to be honest. Had to let it sit for a while after and digest and listen again. So good!
Doctor My Eyes, Late For the Sky, Fountain Of Sorrow, Too Many Angels, Lives in the Balance, Song For Adam, The Fuse, Of Missing Persons, Call It A Loan...then just listen to every song on every one of his albums, he is THAT AMAZING of a lyricist.

Sky Blue and Black is so beautiful. Somehow, one of his that I missed until well into my 40's. A great (short) list! I'll add That Girl Could Sing, one of my faves.
I’ve heard this song many hundreds of times at least. It never fails to hit like a sledgehammer. The perfect blend hope and resignation to create melancholy. A lyrical masterpiece with perfect vocal and musical accompaniment.

Hi there, Saeed..I must admit, when I was in my 20s, I listened to music, knew the songs by heart, but never took the time to digest the lyrics. As I got older, and more mellowed out, I learned to really delve into the lyrics and man, oh man, a lot of tears were shed as I came to realize the meanings behind them. This song strikes a chord with me, and I still get lost in thought when I listen to it. You have a great insight on lyrics and meanings. Great choice, one his best songs. Jackson’s observations on the ‘rat race’ and how so many of us get caught up in it just to survive are powerful and true but love seems to be one way to give it meaning. You can see not much has changed in 50 years. His songs are full of insightful observations and commentary on the angst and disappointments of modern life but written with a poet’s eye and the ear of a great musician and singer.

As I said before one of my all time favorites, we all have a Pretender in us, and that is ok. But you are right we all have to live our lives and our dreams. Perfection! Jackson Browne now lives off the grid and lives his life the way he wants but trying to save our planet for the next generation even tho he is still performing he does his part for our world and still bringing us his great music.

Thank you, Pete. Your comment really made my day :) Sometimes doubt creeps in on how to approach these video's, but i really enjoy doing reactions this way and am so grateful that people watch them. Thanks again!
Saeed I'm really enjoying your channel. It seems that you, (as am I) are a huge fan of well written songs, (you're a writer yes?). Jackson Brown is my favorite male lyricist. In my opinion, there are none better.
Glad to see you've discovered this prophetic bard. The BGVs on the record are David Crosby and Graham Nash. Also, Jackson, by his own admission, tends to write melancholy songs. There are a few positive, upbeat tunes in his library, but most of them are characterized by loss, by longing, and by learning to find a place in this crazy world.
Thanks for the reaction. I needed this today. This song was released just as I got old enough to start making money throwing hay bails for my neighbors and working for my school tutoring fellow students in math and english. I liked this song, mostly because I liked JB, but the words didn't hold any real meaning to me. Life was full of promise back then. Now, as I'm on the verge of turning 60 in a couple of months and just being informed that the once mighty company I work for is cutting jobs, I'm just now contemplating the real meaning of this song. The "what if's" can be haunting, but it's impossible to know where they would have taken me. Not all what if's could have been good.
Thanks for sharing that. A few years of living gives this song more meaning and i would imagine in a few more years that will increase again. The what if game... one i have played too often, but like you said its impossible to know.
"I want to know what became of the changes we waited for love to bring...". Remember this song was written in the wake of the social upheaval of the sixties, so he's writing from the point of view of the young idealistic "hippy" who is now having to settle down and face the responsibilities of life. They are the "boomers" of today.
Thanks for offering me that perspective. I dont know how or why, but this a feeling i have been struggling with all my life. And it all comes together in this amazing song. Incredible!
I think that feeling is not unique to that generation. Young people tend to lose their idealism as they age and it can be a bitter loss. For a generation growing up in the anti-war and civil rights era I think it hits particularly hard in light of the expectation of a "greater awakening". There is a line in the Pink Floyd song "Comfortably Numb" that says "When I was a child I caught a fleeting glimpse, out of the corner of my eye. I turned to look and it was gone. I cannot put my finger on it now, the child is grown, the dream is gone". I identity strongly with the idea that I had a vision and purpose that I lost somewhere along the way.
Another nice thoughtful reaction. I love Jackson Browne. I saw him at Austin Aqua Festival in 1989. This is a beautiful song. Dan Fogelberg is another troubadour in the same vein that I love.
You should listen to Dan Fogelberg's Leader of the Band, which is a tribute to Dan's father. He talks about how much his father loved the song and how it meant so much to them both. I am sure you would appreciate it.
I love Aurora. But I'm old😂, before her Was Browne, Springsteen, and Bob Segar. Plus others in the 60s and 70s. All great story tellers and true artist 😊
Whether it's full on Folk, or just a folk-rock edge...it's just so peaceful. But few make us think like this one does. And in a self-reflecting way. That's just really good for us. ♡
Off subject....but I think John Prine would be something that you're looking for. Songs Sam Stone, Hello in There, Paradise, etc, etc etc. Think you would really enjoy him.
Saeed, i know for a fact... I was the pretender. I'm a woman that around 25 years ago, I would stroll out into the night to get drunk and high.. while pretending to be a productive member of society. I WAS NOT!!! Couldn't hold down a job or apartment.. id just bat my pretty eyes and get what I wanted... Saeed listen to this song again and again, I swear it takes you different places each time you hear it!!!!!!! Next: "THE LOAD/STAY" LIVE 1978 VERSION ❤
Thanks for sharing that. I can relate to parts of it. Will definitely listen to this once in a while. I can imagine my perspective might change a few times.
The great critic Paul Nelson wrote a great essay about this album. In the middle of recording it, Browne's first wife committed suicide. Though most of these songs were written before that happened, they took on new meaning afterward and, as Nelson told it, it became like a movie. This song, with its cynicism and fatalism, is the closing song, but not necessarily the last word. The opening track, The Fuse -- my favorite JB song -- is like a movie that starts at the end, in the present day, before the story gets told. It's the counter to this, showing him coming out of his grief and depression, looking around fresh at the world. Then, there are 3 songs showing the arc of the relationship, starting with troubled souls meeting and ending with the relationship falling apart. Side 2 (of the LP) starts with The Only Child, heartbreaking in the context of the suicide. Browne telling his toddler son to be kind to his mother's memory as he learns what happened. Then Daddy's Tune, trying to mend fences with his father, and finally, before the title song, Sleep's Dark And Silent Gate, a bleeding, grieving song he wrote after his wife's death.
"True love could have been a contender". Back in the 70s, there seemed to be a choice laid before us. Love or the "legal tender". The house in the shade of the freeway represented the acceptance of the death of those dreams. You have a freeway providing your shade. What kind of neighborhood do you live in? And what kind of world were we building? Happy idiots struggle for the legal tender and those ads just keep coming to remind us what we "need". Don Henley, of the Eagles, wrote a song called "Gimme what you got" about stacking up piles and piles of everything but "You don't see no hearses with luggage racks." Profundity was ripe back then! Keep diggin!
Isn’t that a GREAT SONG? The lyrics are so emotionally charged. He was part of the 60’s love child generation who thought they were gonna change things and realized they couldn’t. So sad.
Awesome. My take on the veterans line is they "dream of the fight" because back in society they can't get re-acclimated and are bored "asleep at the traffic light." I got a couple songs in this vein....Dave Matthews "Ants Marching" and Billy Joel "The Stranger" Check them out when you have time. Great job.
Thanks! Just a couple of suggestions with singer songwriters. Jackson Brown's Fountain of Sorrow about his breakup with one of your favs Joni Mitchell. My fav line "When you see through love's illusions, there lies the danger." Live performance ruclips.net/video/q5Cz8ppvGXk/видео.html&start_radio=1 So this leads to Joan Baez "Diamonds and Rust" about her relationship with Nobel Laureate Bob Dylan. ruclips.net/video/GGMHSbcd_qI/видео.html Live performance. Hi Jim, Thanks so much! Sound like great songs! Will try to check these out as soon as possible. Have a wonderful day! Much love to you and your family. Cheers, Saeed
I'm a little late to the party, but I have always been a huge JB fan. This song I have a love/hate relationship with. I view it as a coming of age or end of innocence song. In the world we live in, we have long since moved on from an agrarian sustenance life, and there is simply no economy that raises more people out of misery than Capitalism; and as HA Hayek explains, the freedom to decide what we buy is a determination of the freedom that is intrinsic to a governmental system, and the liberty that allows us to live the life we choose and think the thoughts we decide to think, even if they are in reality someone else paint by number thoughts we heard or read somewhere. The point being is there simply is no dicodomy between love and working for a living. The song in my mind is really defined by the lyric I want to know what became of the changes We waited for love to bring Were they only the fitful dreams Of some greater awakening The point being, it turns out life is impossibly difficult, and there simply is nothing pretentious about finding love and living the best life you can. Being a hopeless romantic, my favorite lyric is, I 'm going to find myself a girl Who can show me what laughter means And we'll fill in the missing colors In each other's paint-by-number dreams And then we'll put out dark glasses on And we'll make love until our strength is gone And when the morning light comes streaming in We'll get up and do it again The part I really don't understand is how living life on its own terms makes you a Pretender; it's just reality, so perhaps if you are a musical genius and muti millionaire, you see this as pretending.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and i agree with many things. For me it can feel like i am a pretender when i put away my dreams for the sake of working to make ends meet. Or when you have to pretend to care about certain things that really dont interest you. A silly example being small talk, but there are many of these examples. Wearing a mask is exhausting and its taken me a while to find my real self. Up until then i felt like a pretender.
@@SaeedReacts. It's also worth mentioning when JB wrote this song, he was in mourning of the loss of of wife who committed suicide. I imagine he was pretty disillusioned and perhaps searching where he had gone wrong and looking for some renewed meaning in his life. I read a comment from on another reaction video on this song, that with any other song writer, the term Pretender would have been the dominant lyric, but JB is such a great song writer, it's actually one of the lesser lyrics compared to the others contained in the song. Some times I feel he might have been using a certain level of comic relief, where he talks about the church bells and the junk man and children waiting for the ice cream truck; normal life going on all around him, while his dealing with such a tragedy. As far as putting away your dreams, try to remember they were dreams without any life experience ("Take your time, think a lot, think of everything you've got, for you will still be here tomorrow, but your dreams may not", Cat Stevens. BTW, I am 69 YO and indeed, while many days seemed long at the time, the years go by in the blink of an eye; the best years by far was the time I took raising my sons. I am reminded of Bob Seger's "Like a Rock", 20 years, where'd they go 20 years I don't know I sit and wonder sometimes, Where they've gone (with me it's 50 years).
I Have Asperger's Autism & IQ of 155 And The "Struggle For Legal Tender" Was too much Because it Robbed Me of Opportunity Of "TRUE LOVE" just Like The Pretender
I love Jackson but I remember when this album came out in 1976 Rolling Stone magazine reviewer called it The Pretentious. Wonder if the reviewer has softened their views

Sometimes doubt creeps in on how to approach these video's, but i really enjoy doing reactions this way and am so grateful that people watch them. Thanks again!
"Veterans dream of the fight, fast asleep at the traffic light". Geez!
Saeed I'm really enjoying your channel. It seems that you, (as am I) are a huge fan of well written songs, (you're a writer yes?). Jackson Brown is my favorite male lyricist. In my opinion, there are none better.
Top 5 lyricist in my book
Thoroughly enjoyed this. You really do it all; all genres. TX Saeed. Greetings from South Africa
This song is so good! Really struck a chord with me. Love exploring all these different genres. Thanks for watching. Greetings from Belgium
Those are the type of songs i usually gravitate towards. Amazing song! Thanks for watching.
I've been watching reactions for some years now, and you are one of the best I've seen. Great work!
Thanks so much ❤️❤️❤️
All right.
I'm subscribing!
this song is in my top 10 .. great reaction
Such a great song! Thanks for watching.
Saeed, another great singer songwriter from the 70’s! Since I’m in my 60’s now, damn these lyrics definitely hit hard!
Incredible song. Struck a chord with me!
Love Jackson Browne and love your reactions!
I enjoy many reaction videos. Your reactions are truly relatable. Great job.
Such a great song. This made a big impact on me.
Thanks so much for watching and the kind words ❤️
So glad to see you getting into Jackson Great stuff love you
Great music!
Much love!
I like your reactions!! More thoughtful and authentic then most!! "Running on empty" is another great one!!!
Thanks so much for the kind words! And for the recommendation.
Always gets to me...too much truth in this song. Nice reaction.
A lot of thoughts were hitting me during this song. It's incredible. A lot of truth indeed! Thanks so much for watching.
Awesome you saw him live.
Thanks for watching and the recommendation!
So many thoughts and emotions hit me at the same time listening to this song.
Off subject....but I think John Prine would be something that you're looking for. Songs Sam Stone, Hello in There, Paradise, etc, etc etc. Think you would really enjoy him.
I think his name is on my list. Hope to get to his music eventually.
Great reaction Saeed. ✌️😎
Thank you!
I Saw The Light - Todd Rundgren

Thanks for the recommendations
🍂 .. Great !!!!!!!! Jackson Browne is great !! ..🍂
Say a prayer for the pretender. .listen to “Salt of the Earth” by The Rolling Stones.
Thanks for that recommendation! Definitely need to explore their music too at some point.
Hi Saeed you handsome guy! I really like Pretender! Have a good one Saeed
Such a great song! Thanks for watching!
Amazing line!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
The hippies of the 1970s became the yuppies (Young Urban Professionals) of the 1980s.
The Pretender landed right in the middle of this.
Isn’t that a GREAT SONG? The lyrics are so emotionally charged. He was part of the 60’s love child generation who thought they were gonna change things and realized they couldn’t. So sad.
Such an amazing song! Definitely hit me hard!
🌸 ( btw.... you look great in that color of shirt! 😁)
Thank you :)
Awesome. My take on the veterans line is they "dream of the fight" because back in society they can't get re-acclimated and are bored "asleep at the traffic light." I got a couple songs in this vein....Dave Matthews "Ants Marching" and Billy Joel "The Stranger" Check them out when you have time. Great job.
Thanks that insight. Yes, it would be hard to adjust to "normal" life coming from such intense situation.
Thanks for the recommendations as well!
Thanks! Just a couple of suggestions with singer songwriters. Jackson Brown's Fountain of Sorrow about his breakup with one of your favs Joni Mitchell. My fav line "When you see through love's illusions, there lies the danger." Live performance

So this leads to Joan Baez "Diamonds and Rust" about her relationship with Nobel Laureate Bob Dylan.

Fav lyric - We both know what memories can bring
They bring diamonds and rust
Thought you might enjoy knowing who the lyrics were written for. My best to you, your family and friends. Jim White
Hi Jim,
Thanks so much! Sound like great songs! Will try to check these out as soon as possible.
Have a wonderful day!
Much love to you and your family.
Cheers,
Saeed
PLEASE react to Jackson’s live video, of LOAD OUT/STAY,,you will be amazed!
Will add it to my list. Thanks so much for watching and the recommendation!
The song in my mind is really defined by the lyric
I want to know what became of the changes
We waited for love to bring
Were they only the fitful dreams
Of some greater awakening
The point being, it turns out life is impossibly difficult, and there simply is nothing pretentious about finding love and living the best life you can. Being a hopeless romantic, my favorite lyric is,
I 'm going to find myself a girl
Who can show me what laughter means
And we'll fill in the missing colors
In each other's paint-by-number dreams
And then we'll put out dark glasses on
And we'll make love until our strength is gone
And when the morning light comes streaming in
We'll get up and do it again
The part I really don't understand is how living life on its own terms makes you a Pretender; it's just reality, so perhaps if you are a musical genius and muti millionaire, you see this as pretending.
I am reminded of Bob Seger's "Like a Rock",
20 years, where'd they go
20 years I don't know
I sit and wonder sometimes,
Where they've gone
(with me it's 50 years).
This is the reaction in the 70s for those who had belived in the 60s and what it have " promiesed."
Your appreciation of the lyrics is refreshing. Yeah, it's a good song and good music, but the words--!!
Great reaction, my friend.
Incredible lyrics! So well written and performed. Thanks so much for watching.
That's the great Leland "Lee" Sklar on bass. He's played on hundreds of albums and has a great RUclips channel!
A true legend. Many years touring with Phil Collins as wel 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻l
❤Saeed, you mentioned Bob Seger. If you haven't reacted to FAMOUS FINAL SCENE, please consider it. I've sung it at karaoke a few times. ❤
I have only reacted to a few songs, but not that one . Will add it to my list. Thanks.
@@SaeedReacts. Thank you ! 😊
It must have hit a nerve or something 😅
Amazing song.
There are a lot of songs I could recommend by him but the list would be far too long! He is a kindred for sure! I had the pleasure of seeing him 3 times over the years, and he still sounds as good now as he did then
Awesome you saw him live a few times. Looking forward to explore more of his music
For me song writing doesn't get any better than Jackson Browne.
Before the Deluge is my personal favorite.
We're all the pretender, bro.
We are all pretenders in one way or another.
