  • I've said from the beginning the orchids you buy from grocery and big box stores are not presented in a way for most to be successful keeping them much after the blooms. Here are 2 examples I found recently.... With a little work these will last a long time and bloom again!!!!!

    I’m a newbie when it comes to orchids. Yours is about the 4th video I’ve watched, by far the most info given in a good straight fwd way in English, no accent! And no annoying background music. What also sets you apart IMHO, is that you answer peoples questions, and even make comments! On a lot of various topic videos on RUclips, the "author" doesn’t answer peoples questions , sometimes important ones! Thank you.

    I am so glad you posted this today! I think most people get these from the store and are afraid to investigate! :)
    I bought a nice large Phal from my grocery store about a month ago. Everything was beautiful except for the aerial roots ~ you could tell the plant was starting to get stressed. They had it in an orchid pot (plastic w/holes) inside of a decorative pot. The potting medium appeared to be bark. Upon re-potting (it definitely was ready to pot-up) it turned out they had the original plant in a sopping wet sphagnum plug. So... you might keep watering because the bark dried out, but the core of the phal was trapped in old, sopping wet sphagnum. There were two root systems sort of. A healthier root system had grown outside of the moss in the bark and had totally taken the shape of the pot. It looked like a healthy root system cage for the poor original roots. Anyway, after re-potting ~ she seems pretty happy! The blooms still look great and the leaves even perked up a bit more than they were! :)

      Definitely...... So many people are scared they will harm it just by taking a good look at the roots. Or don't want to mess up the floral design. Glad you caught yours before it got too far gone. Thanks for stopping by!!!

      My pet peeve as well. Those darn saturated moss/cork plugs! People water and water 🌊 not knowing they're killing it. The flowers fade and it goes in the compost pile🤔 So sad! My new mini was actually in a "cork" plug suffocating the roots😳I had to repot before the buds were even open🙄Happy to say it's doing well now! Thanks for this informative video. It will help many!

      Glad you found it useful. unfortunately I haven't had any Keikis to transplant. In short make sure to keep the roots well hydrated. Once you get 3-4 roots that are at least 1/4 inch long cut the spike below and above the keiki and pot it as you would any other orchid. My orchid has put on a new plant at the end of a spike. How do I pot it and separate it from the original orchid? I'm enjoying your videos. I'm learning so much!

    • @RandyMHarris
      @RandyMHarris  3 года назад

      Glenda, you can just mist the roots on the new plant until they get long and strong enough to maintain the plant. You can also wrap some sphagnum moss around the roots and then wrap that in plastic wrap to keep it moist then misted it every few days....

    Can you tell me when to repot? My orchid is currently in bloom but needs repotting.

    • @RandyMHarris
      @RandyMHarris  3 года назад +1

      Orchids should be re-potted when the roots become crowed in the current pot. Or when the potting medium has broken down. If it is not in distress I wouldn't recommend re-potting it while in bloom, there is a good chance your blooms will drop.

    I'm conflicted on buying these orchids bc I feel bad that most are doomed to die but otoh I'm supporting a business practice that is rather misleading to uninformed customers.
    Orchids have their challenges but they are very tough plants that can endure a lot of neglect. I've forgotten to water some of mine for a month and they still rebloomed. Another was waterlogged bc I lost my passion for plants 15 years ago and only regained it recently. But she is making two basal keikis now that I got my shite together

    Randy,
    I got 2 orchids a few months ago, I don't understand at all, that's why I watched your video.
    The leaves are wrinkled and light yellow and light green now, they don't look good.
    I want to thank you so much, for your video, which should bring to my next step now, thanks its very clearly for that.
    But I have one question, they also say, that the roots need continuous light, and that I should take a clear glass overpot, and not a closed dark pot, Randy I see you put them in a closed overpot, what do I do now, difficult? Greetings Roos

    • @RandyMHarris
      @RandyMHarris  3 года назад

      Roos,
      Sounds like they are not getting enough water. Watch my videos on soak watering and understanding the roots. It will help a lot. As far the clear pots. Phals will photoseninsize in the roots but it is not necessary and does very little for the plant. You ever notice everyone that says that puts the roots in bark or moss (which blocks light) then will put it in a dark decor pot.
