- I've said from the beginning the orchids you buy from grocery and big box stores are not presented in a way for most to be successful keeping them much after the blooms. Here are 2 examples I found recently.... With a little work these will last a long time and bloom again!!!!!

I’m a newbie when it comes to orchids. Yours is about the 4th video I’ve watched, by far the most info given in a good straight fwd way in English, no accent! And no annoying background music. What also sets you apart IMHO, is that you answer peoples questions, and even make comments! On a lot of various topic videos on RUclips, the "author" doesn’t answer peoples questions , sometimes important ones! Thank you.
Linda…..
Thank you for visiting the page and even more for the kind words. It really means a lot…✌🏾
I am so glad you posted this today! I think most people get these from the store and are afraid to investigate! :)
I bought a nice large Phal from my grocery store about a month ago. Everything was beautiful except for the aerial roots ~ you could tell the plant was starting to get stressed. They had it in an orchid pot (plastic w/holes) inside of a decorative pot. The potting medium appeared to be bark. Upon re-potting (it definitely was ready to pot-up) it turned out they had the original plant in a sopping wet sphagnum plug. So... you might keep watering because the bark dried out, but the core of the phal was trapped in old, sopping wet sphagnum. There were two root systems sort of. A healthier root system had grown outside of the moss in the bark and had totally taken the shape of the pot. It looked like a healthy root system cage for the poor original roots. Anyway, after re-potting ~ she seems pretty happy! The blooms still look great and the leaves even perked up a bit more than they were! :)
Definitely...... So many people are scared they will harm it just by taking a good look at the roots. Or don't want to mess up the floral design. Glad you caught yours before it got too far gone. Thanks for stopping by!!!
My pet peeve as well. Those darn saturated moss/cork plugs! People water and water 🌊 not knowing they're killing it. The flowers fade and it goes in the compost pile🤔 So sad! My new mini was actually in a "cork" plug suffocating the roots😳I had to repot before the buds were even open🙄Happy to say it's doing well now! Thanks for this informative video. It will help many!
@@sharonholmes4444 Ohh! Same here! Two mini phals stuffed into sphag plugs and the tiniest plastic cups I ever saw! I'm so glad yours is safe and in a happy home! :)
can I have a mild crush or appreciation from California without making everybody mad?
I take appreciation from anywhere I can get it!!!!! And will defend anyone giving it...LOL
@tule wait....don't we all have a crush on Randy? You're not alone! ☺️
@@Goot253 Well YEA-ah... I figured. so many reasons to dig on Randy.
Wait.... How did I miss all this love...... Now I feel pressure to like be presentable and stuff. You guys are awesome!!!!! Thanks for the kind words.
@@RandyMHarris I like the scruffy days as well though.
I just brought 2 orchids from Lowes clearance section with no blooms. One had 2 spikes and many buds with 2 flowers almost open. The other justa spike and buds. And thanks to watching your videos I have confidence in caring for these plants . Thanks
Wow...I wish I was in your neighborhood! You make everything look so easy! :)
August 14 my husband and I watched your video. We had 4 orchards in varying stages of dying. Today, I noticed that one has 4 buds on it. We lost one and are loosing the battle of another, but those were both in really bad shape. Thank you for sharing you knowledge!
So glad I found your videos!! I have 1 lonely orchid I've had for 4 or more years. I can't get it to bloom, and it just barely grows!! I have thought of just giving up and tossing it in the trash, but I feel sorry for it!!
Nah, don’t toss it. It’s probably just in place in the house that’s not conducive for growth. Watch a few more of the videos. They should help some.
Probably needs more light
The only way it would get more light is to put it outside. It's in a window.
Thank you, I have three orchids and one that is three years old and continues to bloom!!!!
That's awesome!
Thank you for your video! I’m starting to grow them!
Glad I found you! I purchased a mini and of course I don't know about orchids but am learning from you. Just replanted my mini because of your channel. Thank you! Jan
Welcome to your new addiction🤣 Consider going forward, not all plants need repotting. Only repot if it’s distressed or root bound. Good luck Jan!!

Thank you for the videos- definitely on to those mass production store-bought orchids. 🤨
I am still trying to get the perfect touch with phalaenopsis.
They definitely don't replicate their natural treetop environment- 2 ice cubes a day was what king soopers told me
I sometimes feel like Orchids are so fragile. its refreshing to see how you handle them with authority. Learning a lot! thank you.
Hello Stacy,
Not sure I’m the best example. 🤣. They are definitely not as fragile or complicated as most believe. I think over care is the downfall of some peoples orchids. Thanks for stopping by!!
Randy great videos! I would love to see update videos on some of your replanted orchids as they progress.
It’s best to follow me on The Black Orchid Channel and Instagram for more updates.
Interesting video... I always knew I was rescuing them from the grocery store. :P Well now that I have learned how not to kill them anyway lol. My orchids that were in the Snowpocalypse with me are still doing well. They were just as cold as I was for as long also. I even had one bloom open fully on Easter Sunday :D That made my day. Thanks for the video as always. - Heidi
What a nice surprise!!!!! Glad to hear your plants are doing well these days......
Good info! Thnaks.
Thanks Danielle!!
Your videos are so helpful and great thank you! What would u recommend best type of plastic pot and soil for a mini orchid? really wanna keep mine alive :)
As always, great advice.
As always... Thank you!!
Thank you for the info
You’re welcome
Great video! Now I know how to check before buying.
Will you do a video about how to transfer the keikei?
Glad you found it useful. unfortunately I haven't had any Keikis to transplant. In short make sure to keep the roots well hydrated. Once you get 3-4 roots that are at least 1/4 inch long cut the spike below and above the keiki and pot it as you would any other orchid. My orchid has put on a new plant at the end of a spike. How do I pot it and separate it from the original orchid? I'm enjoying your videos. I'm learning so much!
Glenda, you can just mist the roots on the new plant until they get long and strong enough to maintain the plant. You can also wrap some sphagnum moss around the roots and then wrap that in plastic wrap to keep it moist then misted it every few days....
Hello there I couldn't write a comment on your beats by Dre video on how to fix when there's no sound on one side, so I came here to share that, The aluminum paper WORKED!!! YAYYY. Thank you! Apple needs to address this issue, these headphones don't cost $20 🙄. Take care thank you.!
Good it worked for you. Not sure why you couldn't post there. They really need to address this. Instead they deny it even exist.
I’ve forwarded a few of your videos to my daughter. She needs a little orchid care advice.
Awesome! Thank you!

Can you tell me when to repot? My orchid is currently in bloom but needs repotting.
Orchids should be re-potted when the roots become crowed in the current pot. Or when the potting medium has broken down. If it is not in distress I wouldn't recommend re-potting it while in bloom, there is a good chance your blooms will drop.
It seems sphagnum moss would hold too much moisture. Can you address if you think these orchids were in the correct growing medium?
I'm conflicted on buying these orchids bc I feel bad that most are doomed to die but otoh I'm supporting a business practice that is rather misleading to uninformed customers.
Orchids have their challenges but they are very tough plants that can endure a lot of neglect. I've forgotten to water some of mine for a month and they still rebloomed. Another was waterlogged bc I lost my passion for plants 15 years ago and only regained it recently. But she is making two basal keikis now that I got my shite together
Why no ice cubes and thinking of subscribing to your channel!
Mine all have holes in them
Thanks for your sharing!!!!
Hello Denice,
Ice cubes can damage the leafs and roots. Orchids are native to warm climates, The water is melting at 36 degrees.
Ummmm, I just viewed your reply to my question one month ok, but thank you. I just watered two of them. As of this week no more ice.
My beautiful pink Orchid.. Broke in half. But I still Have the orchid, Where is the node.. The white part? 2nd question, My mom Broke off My Arie.. I guess "Growing root", I can't say the words But it's started with A. My mom don't know. Could that be saved ? It just hollowed Or Not? I'm desperate!!
Hello, is it normal that my orchid is growing leaves on top but it's also growing a small leave on the bottom as well?
I’m having a lot of trouble keeping my orchid alive. Is coarse orchid soil good to use?
I have The same thing, Miracle grow Orchid Potting soil , coarse blend, I just got it the Beautiful Pink orchid 2 days ago , I think it will work, I'm a newbie 2.
Randy,
I got 2 orchids a few months ago, I don't understand at all, that's why I watched your video.
The leaves are wrinkled and light yellow and light green now, they don't look good.
I want to thank you so much, for your video, which should bring to my next step now, thanks its very clearly for that.
But I have one question, they also say, that the roots need continuous light, and that I should take a clear glass overpot, and not a closed dark pot, Randy I see you put them in a closed overpot, what do I do now, difficult? Greetings Roos
Roos,
Sounds like they are not getting enough water. Watch my videos on soak watering and understanding the roots. It will help a lot. As far the clear pots. Phals will photoseninsize in the roots but it is not necessary and does very little for the plant. You ever notice everyone that says that puts the roots in bark or moss (which blocks light) then will put it in a dark decor pot.

@@RandyMHarris Hi Randy,
Thanks for your advice, I watched the ....know your roots video, and indeed the roots of mine are silver and not green.
So probably indeed short of water, I am going to transplant them today and put them in a black thea bath first.
Super cool that you're here, thank you so much for helping me. Roos 🙋🏻♀️🤗
I killed at least 50 Phals in the last three years I'm not buying them any longer 😁
Famous last words. Now you know why they were probably dying. Have fun
@@RandyMHarris Good thing I have a room full of species that don't die 😁
