I totally agree with you! I have paid membership since 2005 and ever since I always do corrections in the index/database when I find errors in names to help the community. So I find it sad that there is extra charges which represent a lot every month. I think the « errors button » should not be in the PRO package because that would be so helpful in making our trees better for us but the community also.

Yep I have "all access", but they want me to pay even more. At first it was $14.99 a month, but looks like they settled on $9.99 for now. If they lowered it to $3.99 I might give it a try for a month or two.

You and me both! I also miss the days when Crista used to do her "barefoot genealogist" videos, that were actually about helping us do genealogy on Ancestry. Now she seems like nothing more than a corporate shill -- who praises every little thing Ancestry does, regardless of how much it hurts the customers.

Regarding Pro Tools: I already pay $409.00 per year for an all access membership. Am I going to shell out an additional $9.99 per month (another $119.88 per year) for tools I already have via Family Tree Maker? I don't think so! I'm really sick of Ancestry's practice of offering deep discounts to new subscribers, yet they continue to bilk their long-time users of an annual fortune. Don't get me wrong, I fully appreciate the wealth of records Ancestry provides, but it would be nice to be appreciated for my loyalty.

To save yourself some money, during their black friday/cyber monday sales, they put gift subscriptions 50% off. Buy yourself the All Access gift membership for 12 months. You can put a start date up to 90 days from date of purchase. There's no reason to be paying full price! And if you do it via gift membership there's no risk of getting billed or renewed at a higher price/rate. It will just elapse.

As I stated earlier in a FB post, when Ancestry announced that subscribers would have to pay extra for Pro Tools, I immediately thought of the airline industry and all its add-ons. Yes, you paid for an airline ticket, but if you want to reserve a seat, you pay extra. Want to check a bag? Extra. I hope Ancestry isn’t following the same business model. At the very least, Ancestry should make the fact checker feature part of a regular subscription, since it will mean more accurate hints and more accurate Thru Lines, which improves the Ancestry experience for all its subscribers. Plus, I already have some of these features in my RootsMagic software.

Thank you so much for going to so much effort to educate us about the new things at Ancestry. I appreciate your diligence in that area. I like the new tools, but I honestly don't see myself paying $10/mo for them right now. My genealogy software will check for errors and duplicates and print all kinds of reports. I've already paid for that. I would like to expand my fan chart and play around with that, but FamilySearch already does all of that for free (except the specific Ancestry info like hints and media of course). But, if I use my software to share data with both Ancestry and FamilySearch, then I already have these tools available there. I'm not trying to be a Negative Nellie. It's just some honest feedback that I wanted to put out there and will also pass along to the powers that be at Ancestry. I understand you are "just the messenger", and I appreciate your efforts to get us the messages in a timely manner. 🙂

another thing I would love is when you are related to someone through more than one line, the ability to toggle what that relationship would be. For instance, the man that is the father of 2 of my dad's siblings, but not his own father, is listed in my tree as a 4th cousin 2x removed or something. Also, my ex wife is listed as wife in my tree but I have a divorce added as a fact, which I would think would change the label to EX-WIFE, since I never remarried but it still shows as WIFE. Call me picky, but It's something I'd really like. I know how to edit relationships and to make sure the right option is picked. My tree still shows some half relationships as full and vice versa. All I get told is "go into edit relationships and verify the right thing is checked", which I honestly get tired of hearing, so I just ask about it less often. We have the ability to show which spouse we want shown, so I KNOW its possible to change which relationships are shown.

I have some questions concerning Ancestry DNA. First, instead of immediately pursuing sideview for grandparents, why not allow the user to designate which grandparent their matches belong to, then extrapolate the data from there? Seems it would work faster that way. Secondly, is there any tools coming that automatically cluster and organize DNA matches? Thrulines is great for repetitive matches, but fails all too often with matches that do not belong to the same cluster being reported as sharing the incorrect common ancestors. Thirdly, if a chromosome browser is not in the cards, can a way to show that a match shares the same DNA cluster as others on the shared matches list be found? I have seen way too many matches - especially towards the bottom of the list - that are not really part of the shared matches and should not be shown, but are anyway. Very inaccurate. Finally, will there be any allowance for the privacy requirements of some testers who want to see their shared matches but do not or should not be seen on the lists of others? This is a problem I have seen for adoptees, children, individuals who are aware of a recent NPE in their families that does not allow for privacy and results in "match and run" comparing, turning the privacy controls on and off every time one wants to examine the shared matches list and essentially locks them out of thrulines being allowed. My feeling is that if Ancestry is going to raise prices on subscription and offer new "tools" for a premium fee, the users should be given more features to work with in exchange to make it worthwhile.

I'm not convinced that they will be able to accurately separate matches/ethnicity by grandparent, for myself and my mum at the parental level it is still way off. I have my parents tested at 23andme and my mum and myself at Ancestry. I've compared my Ancestry and 23andme chromosome paintings on DNA painter and all the segments of Indian, Chinese and African that Ancestry has assigned to my Paternal side are Maternal on 23andme, the 23andme assignment is correct as it comes from my Maternal Grandfather who was from Mauritius. I have 2 parent phasing on 23andme, but before the phasing, it had trouble separating the chromosomes so it isn't just an Ancestry issue (I have the same issue on the FTDNA chromosome painter too).
Also, they are having trouble separating a large amount of our DNA matches, even close matches such as my mother's grand-niece are still unassigned. My mum still has 89% of her matches unassigned, mine is a lot better at 33% unassigned. There are a lot of matches however that have been assigned to the wrong side, even in the small amount that has been assigned for my mum. For her there just haven't been that many people testing from her dad's side and a lot of the paternal assigned matches I have found the MRCA to be on the maternal side (my grandparents were from completely different parts of the world).

    • @tomask1436
      @tomask1436 8 месяцев назад

Same here. 95% of unassigned matches on all my kits. It's not able to assign my maternal aunt and the majority of 2nd and 3rd cousins are unassigned. When the match is assigned, the assignment is totally random. Sometimes correct, sometimes wrong. Separating by grandparent is technically impossible, it will not work correctly but they will claim how they are the best and it works for the majority of their users. As usual.
Actually... the separating by grandparent is possible when we test our siblings and compare the segments shared with our matches. It can currently be done with all companies... except Ancestry.

They have changed the way to search from “List of all people”. I don’t care for it at all. Before, there were fields for first and last names so you could search for a specific individual. Now it’s just one one field and brings up a list that you still have to sort through. For example, this morning I was trying to search for George Washington-THE George Washington. Though not directly related, I do have several connections to him and had just found another to his mother. I needed to find him in my large tree but I have so many George Washington so-and-sos because so many ancestors and cousins named their kids after him. It would have been much easier if I could have entered “Washington” into a surname field.

Is Pro Tools available now in Australia 22 June 24? I received a hint on my matches that I could sign up for Pro Tools which I did however it does not work. I specifically wanted the Enhanced Shared Matches Tool otherwise I would not have bothered. I have followed the instructions to use that tool, logged out and back in again, but it does not do anything that I could not do before. So disappointed. Customer Service is virtually non existent on Ancestry.

I use RootsMagic 9, FamilySearch, and Ancestry primarily. And I'm thinking that between RM9 and FamilySearch, I can get all this information from my software the FamilySearch if I'm diligent about sharing data between my software and the online trees --except the color coding of the fan chart specific to Ancestry hints and media. I'm curious to see if anyone brings up a benefit that I might be missing.

What is the benefit of the ProTools chart printing if it only prints a family group chart without photos, documents? Plus, if you cannot add AI gathered information to your "story" to print in a chart, what use is it? It would seem "that" would be a benefit of the "Pro" in the tools. it really adds little value without the extra ability to use it to save and/or print it.

The "view possible errors" feature is glitchy. After correcting the errors....they are not dropping off the list....so I stubble over ones where the error was already corrected. Sometimes they drop off the list, but other times they do not......I've tried refreshing, logging off and on etc. I thought, well maybe the tree needs to be rescanned for them to drop off....but new ones are appearing, yet the corrected old ones are not dropping off the list.

I, like many others below, think the value added from the pro tools is not a paywall adder. While I agree its function for the most part is a great resource for cleaning the errors, I doubt many will spring for it very long. I myself thought it a great idea at a ONE TIME charge of 10 dollars. But that's about it. My Heritage does not charge extra for it. It's just not something I think is worth the money in a monthly format.

These are excellent tools and I do see myself making use of this. However, I would also like to see another tool that helped filter 'Ancestry member trees' within Hints. Specifically 'Ancestry member trees' that have more or different sources, records, photos than my own tree (i.e. My ancestor with 10 sources, 10 records, 1 photos to someone else's that has 11 sources, 11 records, 0 photos). This would help me find other sources and records that someone else may have already found. And if this could be applied to a tree view, I would be able to find member trees where other members have done a lot of work I have yet to discover.

My one wish request to Ancestry would be the ability to upload a photo and have them scan to see if there are other photo's whether they be named or unnamed, somewhere on the site. The new Ancestry owners are so greedy for money, that it does not make doing a DNA test worth it when you can only see 3 of your shared matches UNLESS you pay more. All the money we have paid over the years mean nothing because they just nickle and dime you for every thing now that used to come with your membership. I will just use the library account from now on. I won't be able to save anything, but at least I can print it and have for myself befor the next time they decide to start charging extra for that too.

I wasn't planning to get Pro but the map capabilities are exactly what I'm looking for! One thing I'm eager to see as I get into it is how forgiving is it when the same place is identified in different ways. For instance, will Cooperstown, Otsego County, New York, United States of America come up the same as Cooperstown, Otsego, NY, USA? I try to keep my place names standardized but differences slip through when the place name is filled in automatically from a record. I'm hoping the algorithm is fuzzy enough that I don't have to review every place for every record for every person on my tree. Fingers crossed! Just for the record, I don't mind paying Ancestry for all the work they do. Excellence doesn't come free.

It appears that only Ancestry-recognized locations work, so that all of my little western Ukrainian village names do not work for filtering. What a bummer. When they have opportunity to suck more money out of their users, they take advantage of that. For many years, they told us that they do not allow the upload of foreign DNA data in order to protect the privacy of their users. Two days ago, they updated their privacy statement that our DNA data can be compared not only with DNA data of other users but also with uploaded DNA data. Apparently their income is going down so they're going to allow strangers to upload their DNA data to them so they can charge them a subscription.

“Pro Tools” are standard features on MULTIPLE software applications. It’s criminal for Ancestry to bilk even more money for their already obscenely expensive service. It seems that Crista is popping up on every RUclips channel and that these have become little more than infomercials for “Pro Tools.” Crista seems to tout “free” things that Ancestry has but fails to mention that MANY of these, such as census records are FREE from MANY other places on the Internet.

I got something, that Ancestry could do, in the Future. Ancestry can tell, where you took, your photos, that you upload, to your Family Tree. Let's just say, you don't, put the location, where you took that photo (or) let's just say, you (do), put the location, where you took the photo. Or, how about this, the photo, is so old, nobody knows where, the photo is taking, or who's in, the photo. And another thing, Maybe Ancestry, can tell what ethnicity, that person looks, in that photo. Maybe Ancestry, can answer that. But I'm sure, they can, someday.

It is not uncommon for technology companies to roll out to particular regions first. This is a good idea for testing things but can also be necessary when they are still working on getting the content localized, checking against laws and regulations that might exist in those other locations, and researching the appropriate market pricing. Companies all over the world do this for these very specific reasons and if the company is located in your home region, you would likely see it first. I do understand your frustration, it's completely valid, just wanted to help you understand why it happens do you know, in this case, it's not because they dislike other regions. ;/
