The base model looks pretty perfect for my "Studio" environment. I got 4 editors on 10gig ethernet hooked to a massive media server for video editing commercials and TV shows. We usually spend about $3000 per computer and keep them for like 6 years. The storage doesn't bother me by more is always better. The only things our machines use internal storage for is fonts, web browser, photoshop, and Resolve.
Yeah, it's great but factor in as long a period of applecare as you can because if the ram, ssd, power supply, gpu or logic board fails, you are looking at a VERY expensive brick.

Yes - I am having the same experiences with my new Base Studio Max also. I softened the $$ with trade in of my Mac Mini M1 and simply plugged this one in and now I am smiling at the power of this beast in a box. I has external storage options in place with the Mac mini - a Hagibis USB hub with 2TB SSD that fits under the Studio perfectly - then a OWC Thunderbolt 4 hub with with drives and Ethernet to my NAS - so the 512GB was not an issue up front. This Studio Max has been perfectly silent and the desktop clean. Love it - I use Resolve and the Affinity Photo/Designer/Publisher which run great. Life is good with the Studio.
I’m an iPad Pro on the go kind of guy. I love the Studio base model spec. It’s overkill for what I do admittedly (web/UX, development, graphics and photography) but could future proof my at home workflow for years and I feel like $2k is quite reasonable for what you get.
I dunno...I just don't care about upgradeability anymore. I don't remember the last time I've upgraded either my Mac or PC. Operating systems and software seem to obsolete everything out after 6-7 years anyway, so not sure the point.
Upgrading worked for me but I may be the exception, not the rule. I have a 2010 Mac Pro. I took out the standard hard drive and replaced with a solid-state. I took out the included graphics card and installed a sapphire 7970 (or is is 7980? Something like that - huge thing, two fans, barely fits….), added the accelsior from other world computing for a PCIe solid state drive to edit off of. All of those certainly helped to extend the life. I was also able to max out the ram by buying third-party. I do all of this tune allow my computer to run more games, but more importantly to play, edit and render 4K video projects. I hit my limit however when I got the black magic pocket cinema camera 6K pro and wanted to shoot 6K Blackmagic raw. That needs a minimum operating system requirement that my computer is just not allowed to install no matter those other upgrades. Sad sad…. I can’t even view the 6K raw files… :(
That's great you have the technical skill and knowledge to perform those kind of upgrades. I've updated RAM in my PC before, but like I said I just got to the point I don't want to mess with that stuff anymore. At best it seemed to only buy another year or so.

I have hooked up my base Mac Studio to my Plex Server and can now stream 4K HDR content to my Apple TV via Ethernet without seeing the dreaded slow server warning. It’s now running buttery smooth and was worth the purchase. I also have the M1 MacBook Air which is the best laptop I’ve ever had. I usually went with the Intel Pro machines. In the past. And this is just the beginning for Apple. Once I am ready to upgrade again in 5 to 7 years. It will be insane and we will laugh at the M1 Max and M1 Ultra.

Kudos for general performance when running Resolve... Your proactive bit to prevent "sticker shock" was inspired (but whoever said Apple's computers were cheap)! Thank you for great content!!
Great video as always! I would love to see a video on your server farm. I’m in the early stages of doing research and your level headed honest review would help me! Thanks in advance.
As long as you have 512GB or at least 256GB that is enough storage for a desktop. People need to stop using internal storage for holding everything and go cloud or buy an external drive. People have too much faith in the storage that comes with their device.
If you're looking for a reason to love an integrated SoC, look at the Affinity Photo benchmark (1920 I think). It shows good independent CPU and good GPU scores compared with a 12900K+RTX3090 but now take a look at the combined workload score - WOW! That's Unified Memory Architecture folks (the only benchmark I can see to show it).
Your recommendation is on the way to my house (though I ordered it one day after launch!💀)! Please make a storage video, and how to transfer files from my pc drives! 😀
Simple and very good video. I like the part 5:30 to 5:45. Many people buy thinking more RAM or better graphics card will help. But the truth is it’s your workflow , style , apps used and end Audience / customer/ client you are targeting dictates the computer you buy. Nice 😊 video as usual
Gosh... I was just about to make a video about my upgrade from the Mac Mini to the Mac Studio (base model, like you did) but now I don't need to because I agree with almost all of your points. The only disagreement I have is that if you need a terabyte of mass storage, pay $200 more and get it. No one is stopping you.
Another comment... I am a knowledge worker by day and a prosumer photographer/photo editor on the weekend. I don't have nearly the set of requirements I should have to justify a $2000 computer. But I just had to get one. Buyer's remorse? Not even close. This thing is FAST. I have been blazing though Capture One photo edits. There was always a lag when bringing up a new photo and a small lag when applying an edit. Not huge on the M1 Mac Mini but noticeable. I barely notice any lag now. Not sure if it's the GPU power or the CPU power. Who cares. It's fun is what it is. Everything else I do is almost instantaneous. I feel like I did when I first got a computer. I've heard so much belly-aching about this computer. I can't understand it.
I'm waiting a couple of months but plan to get the one with the 32 core GPU and 1TB, $200 more for 8 more GPU cores I think it worth it for the long run. Excellent review as alwasy!
I couldn't wait... went and got the base model a few days ago and very happy, I have external drives as it's primarily for Logic the extra GPU cores wouldn't make too much difference.
Excellent review - as usual. I spend days or weeks on editing my videos on DaVinci Resolve and honestly rendering time is the least of my concerns, I don’t mind having it render over night if so needed. How does it behave during editing compared to the M1 mini? Maybe you don’t do enough fusion, color grading and other effects to actually see a difference but it would be nice to get your feedback. Love your videos!
I’d love a Mac mini with an M1 Pro, I think that price and performance would be perfect for so many. Able to add almost the same ports too with the Pro controllers. Then the Studio is really for those who need it. Hopefully the M1 Pro (or M2 Pro) make it into the entry line with the MacBook Air and iMac.
Hope to see a review a on the Studio M1 Max comparing the 24 core to 32 core and if it is worth the extra $200... And 32GB compared to 64GB is it worth the $400... I can only afford the lower end model and bet there are others out there like me that would like to see this comparison... thanks in advance
Good review. Would you do a video to address the fan noise (or lack of it) objectively and in more details when you connect two monitors to the Mac Studio Base Model? thank you
I admit, I was VERY pessimistic when Apple announced they were doing their own SOC. First thoughts I had: "yikes, we're going back to the days of mediocrity ... of Motorola and PowerPC". ... But damn. This M1 seems it came out of nowhere ... and now is in a position to potentially dictate the future of laptop/desktop CPU architecture.
It’s almost 8 months since the Mac Studio Max and studio display were released. Should I wait for an M2 model or take the plunge now. I would appreciate some feedback.
ANOTHER GREAT VIDEO - which way would you connect a studio to 4K tv ,please , thunderbolt 4 to hdmi or get the belkin 4K hmdi cable…..thanks for any help
I would have 16GB as the absolute base on all machines. 8GB will barely run the machine, from what I can tell. For the Studio, they've based it on 32GB.
i have never had any bluetooth problems with my m1 mini but i have seen my wifi drop when hot spotting off my ipad but then again alot of computers can do that so all in all 100% no problems here
Thanks for the video! I'd upgrade the GPU to 32 cores instead of upgrading the internal storage for $200. Or do both for $400 and keep it rolling! Otherwise, because I can't repair this machine myself, or do any upgrades, any project should probably be saved on external storage or NAS. I'm treating this machine more as a mega processing I/O tool. Yet because of the design, I have to store or keep a copy of my data on external storage. I think this is wise. No matter how fast and amazing the storage is, have a redundancy and disaster plan.
Hey Michael! Is no. 2 better right? 1. getting 1 TB SSD rather than the 500+GB base SSD 2. getting the 500+GB base SSD then get an external HDD like QNAP TR-002. The cost of 1 TB SSD is similar to an external HDD 6TB seagate so I wonder if more internal SSD can affect the speed and performance of the device or its just for storage purposes?
@@iam_riro there are several good choices for external thunderbolt storage, or 10GB NAS storage. It's all based on your requirements. Personally, I would only install apps on the internal drives. I would edit from fast external storage. I might render a file to the internal storage, but later, I'd move it to external.
Love the review! I don't have a personal use for it, so I'm looking at the M1 iPad Pro or Air. Also like the explanation of the "upgradability" on the studio!
I have the base 14" macbook pro and a pc that I built, however I am considering getting the mac studio for design work and moving the pc into the living room for gaming. For context the pc has 32gb of ram, 5800x, 6800xt, 4tb 870qvo and 500gb 980 pro the tv is a 65" 120hz 4k lg.
saying upgrading to a 1TB isn't the worst value... you forget you are actually only getting 512GB for those 200 bucks NOT 1TB... since you already had 512GB to start with
Thanks for the video Gary. I've got a question that you've probably already covered in a different video that I just can't find. What are your thoughts on 64G vs 32G of Unified Memory? Thanks in advance.
All depends on what you're doing with the computer and how you are going about those tasks. For example, in 2014 I edited a 90-min feature film that was shot on a 4K RED with a 15" 2013 MBP. That was only quad core with 16GB of RAM (ie. unified memory). I edited in proxies and I wasn't in charge of the final export (ie. adding color correction, VFX, 5.1 mix, etc). However, that machine got me through an edit of entire feature. Which, looking back, I kind wish I never spent money upgrading computers in the years since. I probably could have used that laptop for longer than I did, haha. Again, it all depends on your expected tasks. What do you expect to use the computer for?
How about testing the Mac Studio M1 MAX Thunderbolt 4 ports with EXTERNAL SSDs to see if the controllers slows down the external SSD like on the M1 Mac Mini? Note that the front USB-C ports on the Mac Studio M1 MAX are slower than the back Thunderbolt 4 ports (but not on the Ultra) so you might want to use the back ports if you test this.
External thunderbolt enclosures with nvme ssd are super fast (on rear TB ports) but ssd's like the Samsung T7 still have slower transfer speeds than a Mac with Intel chips (front and back ports same transfer speeds). I think this is the only downside of the M1 chips and I don't think Apple will ever bother to sort it out.
nice! can you perhaps make a quick coverage on Mac Studio noise compared to M1 Mac Mini? if it's equally silent, or if we shall expect something more audible? thanks :)
@@Level30Games thx bro you to, I originally went with 1T with the plans of editing through a thunderbolt ssd, even tho thoes ssd are fast, the read and write internally from apple is even faster, so i canceled my order and went with 2T with the plans of editing internally,
I agree from the start. The $2k base model is fantastic, a tad too high imho but I can stomach it. This thing will be fantastic 8-10 years from now. The SSD on the Studio is not running at 7000MB/s even on 4TB and 8TB drives.
Not really, it will be obsolete in two years because Apple will intentionally slow down performance capability as new silicon hits the market so to push consumers toward new hardware
@@taucetus3657 Probably not, because the 2020 Mac mini hasn't been slowed down intentionally lol. Might see more of a slow down as software gets more intense and feature packed through updates and hardware remains the same-- which I'm assuming with positive intent, is what you mean. You do understand that that is a thing, right? 🤦🏻♂
Gary, I know I don't need anything faster than the "Cheapest" MAC Studio, yet I am holding off until I see what Apple is going to offer in the MAC Pro. I'm concerned for the people who will go out and purchase the $8000 MAC Studio, then Apple comes out with a more powerful MAC Pro that will start at a similar price as the mid range MAC Studio. IMO, Tim Cook is doing exactly what Steve Jobs hated when he came back to Apple in the 90's. There are too many SKU's in the Apple lineup. Why didn't Apple just turn the MAC Mini into the MAC Studio with a little lower price. Realizing that having computers made into the smallest chassis is not a bad thing. I personally think that people wouldn't mind a size increase in their computers as long as they get a BIG improvement from their last purchase.
Great review. I'm still waiting for mine - even though I bought mine on DAY ONE! So, I'm a little jealous. But... $8000 for top-o-the-line Mac Studio - is the price of a car? Where do you buy your cars? An $8000 used car is suspicious.
Very helpful video: thank you. I would echo other peoples questions regarding a closer evaluation of the noise of the machine when idling and under load. There are quite conflicting reports regarding the base/M1 Max Studio regarding the idling fan noise.

i have never had any bluetooth problems with my m1 mini but i have seen my wifi drop when hot spotting off my ipad but then again alot of computers can do that so all in all 100% no problems here
Thanks for the video!
1. getting 1 TB SSD rather than the 500+GB base SSD
2. getting the 500+GB base SSD then get an external HDD like QNAP TR-002.
Happy with my original M1 mini. I'll probably buy the M2 mini when it is released.
Love the review! I don't have a personal use for it, so I'm looking at the M1 iPad Pro or Air. Also like the explanation of the "upgradability" on the studio!
I would like to know the differences between the base models… The differences between having more RAM and/or having more cores.
Agreed
Lol thanks for mentally preparing us for the price reveal
Thanks for sharing: great review. Blessings on your day.
I get mine tomorrow!! I’m super excited
Nice! I hope you enjoy it!
I have the base 14" macbook pro and a pc that I built, however I am considering getting the mac studio for design work and moving the pc into the living room for gaming. For context the pc has 32gb of ram, 5800x, 6800xt, 4tb 870qvo and 500gb 980 pro the tv is a 65" 120hz 4k lg.
saying upgrading to a 1TB isn't the worst value... you forget you are actually only getting 512GB for those 200 bucks NOT 1TB... since you already had 512GB to start with
This or Mini 16/512 ? For 4k final cut simple RUclips videos. Worth the $1k extra over the Mini?
I really enjoyed your review.
Great video, can you share what brand keyboard and monitor you use with the mac studio ?
what resolution were you running World of Warcraft ? it's a native M1 app, so I thought it would run very good on this mac Studio
The 1tb version on education discount is like $1979. That’s a steal for the horse power you get.
How do you get the education discount?
I really like the t-shirt you’re wearing
You are awesome, love your videos. Thank you!
Lol chefs kiss of perfection 👌
Do the bluetooth accessories work from a fair distance like 3 meters away?
“Is it really cheap? Nah, but RUclips has gotta RUclips!” 😂
what monitor would you use with this besides the studio display?
PS... I agree on the smoothness (or occasionally clunkiness) of the MBP16.
Just for perspective, I bought a 386dx with a dot matrix printer for 1800 .00 in 1992. Which is 3500.00 in todays dollars.
A video on the server will be cool
Portland, JAMAICA in The Building !!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am so torn on whether to buy this as I have no idea how a VM will run on it
How about testing the Mac Studio M1 MAX Thunderbolt 4 ports with EXTERNAL SSDs to see if the controllers slows down the external SSD like on the M1 Mac Mini? Note that the front USB-C ports on the Mac Studio M1 MAX are slower than the back Thunderbolt 4 ports (but not on the Ultra) so you might want to use the back ports if you test this.
External thunderbolt enclosures with nvme ssd are super fast (on rear TB ports) but ssd's like the Samsung T7 still have slower transfer speeds than a Mac with Intel chips (front and back ports same transfer speeds). I think this is the only downside of the M1 chips and I don't think Apple will ever bother to sort it out.
nice!
can you perhaps make a quick coverage on Mac Studio noise compared to M1 Mac Mini?
if it's equally silent, or if we shall expect something more audible?
thanks :)
I thought the 200 dollar bump from a 24gpu to 32core was a good value, paired with 64ram and 2T for 3,482 now I gotta wait till June😔
Me and you both! Same config but I went only 1TB of storage. Enjoy it when it arrives!
@@Level30Games thx bro you to, I originally went with 1T with the plans of editing through a thunderbolt ssd, even tho thoes ssd are fast, the read and write internally from apple is even faster, so i canceled my order and went with 2T with the plans of editing internally,
Server video please :-)
I got The Cheapest Mac Studio and Upgraded the SSD to 1 TB. Its still in customs in China tho I hope they hurry up a little xD
@@taucetus3657 That will not happen stop fear mongering.
Yes, you are!
Thank you for holding my hand.
Waiting for that studio display review before I got ahead and get one 👀
Still hasn't shown up yet.
Smooth and snappy operating system ... well, should be.
