I've found that the best donors are liquid damaged machines for housing swaps. It helps if they happen to die early in their life, too. My free 2012 i7 13" Pro was rehoused into a free 2011 i5 model with liquid damage; the board had corrosion around the rear vents and wouldn't POST or show signs of life beyond a twitching fan. The battery only had 134 charge cycles and was still in good health, the keyboard still had its matte surface, and not a dent or scratch anywhere on it. The donor board machine had a stage light fall on it while it was open and it got flattened, but the unibody structure saved the board from damage (even if the hinges got ripped out of the aluminum from the impact). It can also be a save for a poorly reconditioned device: i.e., I got a "dead" $5 ThinkPad X250 with an i7 that had seen some botched DIY repairs from its previous owner (my guess is failed trackpad?) . It was missing screws, the keyboard backlight diffuser, and the cable management was awful and the guy used the wrong length of screws in places, so there were little protrusions on the topcase and even a crack in it from the botched work. Transplanted that (ultimately) working i7 board into a mint $28 i5 model with water damage, now it's good as new. Installing Windows 10, underclocking the CPU and overclocking the GPU (to keep power consumption and heat at an acceptable level) can make this a pretty decent machine for gaming even, at least for games until 2015. Got Tomb Raider 2013 at native resolution at 70 fps, Thief 2014 at 40-60 fps and even Far Cry 4 running at 40-50fps (but with a lower resolution here). It won't replace a dedicated gaming laptop tho. ;)
i wanted to repurpose my 2009 Macbook by doing something like this but somehow Apple underclocks the system if there's no battery detected, which is a hassle because it bloats after a year and its already on its 4th for the past 6 years . If there is any kernel modification done to overcome this underclocking i would love to use my old macbook again
doesnt work it can draw more power than magsafe delivers i did this type of conversion as well on a 2009 15“ and i just used acceptable batteries coming from my 2010 model after 300-500 cycles

I think I have the same Macbook pro (Core i7, right?) - still my main computer. And VERY responsive and quite capable with a fast SSD as the main drive. (Crucial M4 (Sata 3) as the main one. OWC (Sata '2.5') as secondary) The 15" models were always more future proof than the 13", on account of dedicated graphics. Only issue I have is that the bottom RAM slot is not functioning. I know what the problem is, but don't feel confident enough to microsolder the connections back.... Yet.

Well one of my daily driver is a headless laptop. In Indonesia it's common since you wouldn't even consider 22 dollar SSD is cheap
I CNC machined a case for a motherboard that mounts under a cabinet. Much smaller than a MacBook because it has no screen, no disk drive and no speakers etc.
Only thing I haven’t figured out is how to circumvent the battery. It won’t boot without it.
I admit this is a super cool video , headless laptop i think is like me 😂😂😂😂
Installing Windows 10, underclocking the CPU and overclocking the GPU (to keep power consumption and heat at an acceptable level) can make this a pretty decent machine for gaming even, at least for games until 2015. Got Tomb Raider 2013 at native resolution at 70 fps, Thief 2014 at 40-60 fps and even Far Cry 4 running at 40-50fps (but with a lower resolution here). It won't replace a dedicated gaming laptop tho. ;)
Overclocking isnt worth lmao.
@@AntiGrieferGames If you think 10-15 fps isn't worth it...
How did it even lose the monitor!? That's so weird to see a Macbook without it
Can you make a sever with that Mac book?
Nice a modern version of Apple IIc
i wanted to repurpose my 2009 Macbook by doing something like this but somehow Apple underclocks the system if there's no battery detected, which is a hassle because it bloats after a year and its already on its 4th for the past 6 years . If there is any kernel modification done to overcome this underclocking i would love to use my old macbook again
doesnt work it can draw more power than magsafe delivers
i did this type of conversion as well on a 2009 15“ and i just used acceptable batteries coming from my 2010 model after 300-500 cycles
Some other user commented this: "Opencore Legacy Patcher can patch out the performance drop from the missing/cooked battery."
Might be useful to take a look for your case
@@hex8387 Yes this absoutely works I've done it with mine!
@@hex8387 thank you ! I'll scroll through everything on the Github page and hopefully it will work again
So, it's half speed because the battery is broken? Great engineering, Apple.
I think I have the same Macbook pro (Core i7, right?) - still my main computer.
And VERY responsive and quite capable with a fast SSD as the main drive.
(Crucial M4 (Sata 3) as the main one. OWC (Sata '2.5') as secondary)
The 15" models were always more future proof than the 13", on account of dedicated graphics.
Only issue I have is that the bottom RAM slot is not functioning.
I know what the problem is, but don't feel confident enough to microsolder the connections back.... Yet.
I was confused for a moment there as this looked like a 13 inch but it’s a 15 as the 13 doesn’t have 2 fans not a dedicated gpu
Good recycle laptop / desktop. Would it compete against a rasberry pi running a lite os? Maybe but good on ya!
This is a nice video thanks. Why is the battery affecting performance? I thought that you can use the power adapter and override the battery?
Amazing true legend never forgot love older tech great review ❤
just to note the raspberry pi 400 is the first AIO computer thats a keyboard
