I've been a PC guy for years, mainly for video editing, but I'm actually really glad that mac has been doing so well lately in terms of what they've been putting out. If I was needing to work on actual film sets instead of at home, I would probably get one of these in a heartbeat, as I reckon that'd be a really good place for them!
I replaced my 2020 Mac Mini (Base) with a Studio (Base) and I'm loving it. I won't need to replace it for a VERY long time, barring any hardware issues that might arise. I have a Satechi Hub USB-C for my Mac Mini, and I was wondering what I was going to do with it now that I don't own one. I sat my Studio on top and plugged it in, and it fit neatly on top and had a plenty large gap to allow for air in between. So, if someone is looking for more USB-As or headphone jack or ANOTHER SD Card slot x 2, then it'll work just fine.
It took me about 5 minutes to order this beast after the announcement and traded in my barely adequate Mini. It was simply a plug and play with my existing configuration in my studio and storage. This max performance is amazing and is a cost effective option with the trade in.
@chipotleman I got about 70% of what I paid for it about a year and half ago on sale. I figured It cost less than $10 a month to use the mini so it really softened the $$ of the Studio Max and I used my Apple Card and got $$ back and now I pay about $125 a month for a year so it became very cost effective and it is all a business deduction and decision.
I was thinking of a mini until this was announced, decided to get the base model and can't imagine I would need anything more for years to come - I love it! As my oldest is in college so we qualify for the Educational pricing and I traded in an older iPad the price was phenomenal. I would encourage everyone to look at the requirements for Educational pricing, there are probably many who qualify that don't realize it and the discount is very real. It's also applies to software as well, their educational bundle is an amazing deal with Final Cut, Logic Pro and others bundled for one reduced price. Great video as always, your initial reaction videos definitely helped me make my decision last week!
I did the same. As a current student I got that discount, and I'm trading in my late 2019 iMac as well. Got the base model (updated only storage) - for $1200. An absolute steal.
Hey Everyday Dad, Jose from Puerto Rico. I ordered the base model too, but bumped up the ram to 64gb and 1Tb storage. Still waiting on it from B&H to deliver. They said they'll get stock mid-May and start shipping. Realistically, I think maybe June for me. I hope I'm wrong on this and get it sooner. Having said that, this would be a major upgrade for me and first exposure to the newer M1 silicon, since I'm using a mid 2014 MacBook Pro with a dead battery and hooked to my wall socket. In my particular case, I'll probably notice the increase in speed and performance. I mainly use Photoshop and Lightroom. Let's see how it goes. Nice video!
I have a Studio Max (with 1TB upgrade only) on order from B&H as well. Ordered it on March 16 and was estimated mid April delivery. Realistically, who knows? B&H has no idea so it’s useless to bother them about it. Had to think hard if maybe 512gb might be ok but my current onboard storage is more than 512gb but not over 1TB so having the bump will future-proof me. For archive storage I have plenty of external drives. Good luck!
I purchased a new Windows 11 gaming laptop in 8 2022 (I7 12650) and it had a major sound card problem. I spend several days resetting it and trying to find HP support but no luck. It was returned. MY wife suggested I just buy a MAC if I valued my time and I took her advice. The Mac Studio processed my video and photo AI processing very rapidly without any incidents. While I don't like the inability to upgrade the MAC, I do appreciate the value of the single minded design, the engineering and the related reliability and build quality. I priced out a hypothetical Mac Mini with 32 GB of ram (which you can not get) along with the up charge for fast ethernet, larger hard drive (256 to 512 GB) and a Thunderbolt 4 docking station and found that the Mac Studio Max with the superior processor seemed to be a good value. I coupled it with an inexpensive color corrected 4K monitor (about $300) and couldn't be happier. If you like building your own PC or upgrading, the MAC is not for you. If you want trouble free computer with good support that just works (an appliance), you might like the MAC Studio Max.

just got a mac studio base... The editing and working experience on this thing is amazing. Now about noise... You can kind of hear it at default fan speed (1300) but it doesn't bother me. For a very silent machine, turn the fan to 1100rpm. It won't warm up anyway so you can leave it as this.
Went with the 512gb version, didn’t want to wait a month to get the 1tb. That and the files I frequently access are 27gb, the rest can go on a thunderbolt ssd or nas.
I'm still probably gonna get the "cheapest" 16" M1 Pro and it's for a few reasons. 1) I want a high refresh rate, mini-LED display and 16" is big enough to hide the notch more than the 14". 2) Portability means a lot more to me right now. Since I can't afford a new desktop AND a new laptop I'd rather settle on a laptop. 3) The M1 Pro is a big enough upgrade for me compared to my 2017 i5 quad core intel 5k iMac and 16GB will be enough for me. I may end up saying f*ck it and getting 32GB but the we'll see. 4) I'm fine with 512GB of storage because external storage is fast enough for me. So yeah, if I decide portability isn't important then I'll just get a base model Studio with maxed out RAM. I'm not a big time video editor so the higher specs aren't important to me.
How'd it go? I recently picked up the macbook pro 16" base for much the same reasons only to realize that mobility isn't as important as I had thought. I May return for the studio base model.
@@leagueofotters2774 To be honest for the work that I do, which is editing sound effects in Pro Tools, it's not much different than the Mac mini M1 I had before. I made a few video edits, preforms very well but not 3x better than the Mini as the price would suggest. Also, it's not completely silent as the mini was, doesn't really bother me, but in a dead quiet recording studio it's a downgrade. Looking back, the only reason I didn't get a macbook pro is there's more stuff that may break on it. Otherwise they're the same machine.
I have a Mac Studio M1Max and have it located laterally on a shelf. This means that I can very easily access the ports at the rear as the computer is located nearby to make adjustments. These machines are so compact that it seems unnecessary to be concerned about the location of extra ports on the front. It's not necessary to me and perhaps other people to have any difficulty access the rear outputs. Just. because that's how it was done previously with bigger machines this is isn't needed with the latest compact computers. Now a lateral position makes accessing the rear as well as the front input sockets easy.
I am a knowledge worker by day and a prosumer photo editor on the weekends. The base Studio is overkill, but I could afford it. I LOVE MY MAC STUDIO (lowest-end version). Thank you.
I like USB-C. I like everything to be the same plug. I’ve got all my IO on USB-C or Thunderbolt for years. Apple removing one USB-C port (in exchange for a bunch of other ports) from the MacBook Pros kind of bothered me.
Hi Gary -- don't you think it would be a good idea to buy the Studio with at least 1-2TB of storage to support editing current projects on the internal SSD, then save to the NAS when done? The 512GB model doesn't look big enough for that.
I put a deposit on one yesterday - it should be coming from another store on Thursday, as my local not-Apple store hadn't received theirs yet. Like you ED, I love the amount of ports - after 2 years WFH and juggling the USB ports on my 2014 5k iMac, I would love to have more without buying anything extra. The other reason is I would not mind if it lasted as long as that iMac, so the extra power of the Studio might seem excessive for me now, but in 8 years.........
What if you plugged a dock into each of the built in ports on the Studio? Now that would be an interesting test, what's the thru put when using the Mac Studio as a NAS?
Yup, I’d buy it for the connectivity and the extra power over my M1 except I am doing very little video so the M1 is just fine. Plus I have $250 sunk in an OWC thunderbolt dock. But yes if I needed the power it’s great value.
Unlike iPhones which I tend to upgrade more frequently....I tend to keep computers around much longer and therefore adhere to the notion of buying the highest spec (or close to) model that I can afford. Since in doing so I delay the inevitable obsolescence that computer hardware reaches as software and ancillary hardware changes.
Nope I ordered mine with the updated Max 64gb/4tb and will still need the two TB 4 docks that I have for my 8 external hard drives, soon to be 10 external drives. But I totally agree with you that in this case most people would never use all of its power.
Wondering if I need the 10G Ethernet. I primarily use my computer for FCP videos and uploading to RUclips. Debating between this or the basic Mac Mini.
Sold my m1 Mini for 800$ on ebay (keep you boxes) and love my Studio. No more BT/Airpod issues and upgrade only cost me a grand all told (with vet discount) Have you had any issues like the bluetooth/air pod issues we had with the Mini?
I suggested to Apple that they should have 1 Ultra single core at 4ghz etc then rest high performance and efficiency cores. That way that 1 ultra core can give a huge performance boost on single core apps.
Hey Everyday Dad, Can I connect my macbook pro to the mac studio to use the macbook pro as my display, keyboard, and mouse? It's a 2017 15 inch Macbook Pro, with 4 usb-c as its input/outputs. Love your channel thanks!
I’ve also seen complaints but wonder if those people every had a gaming PC and dealt with GPU coil whine. As long as it’s a low purr, I’ll gladly retire by 2009 cheese grater.
Thank you, for an excellent video. However this week, I tried to order a "Mac Studio" and there is currently a four (4)-month delivery wait time. So, I will just pick-up a used Intel mac desktop to hold me for the next 12 to 18 months. Sure that by them, Apple, Inc. will be begging people to buy a custom base model "Mac Studio" (smile...smile).
I'm thinking of getting the Mac Studio and use it as my Plex Server (+ desk working of course). Question - What external HD would you recommend to get, to connect to it? Thinking at least 4-8 GB per drive, maybe more.
All I need would be an M1 Mac Mini (10G version, as I move a lot of things to my NAS), but I ordered an M1 Ultra with 128GB and 2TB storage. All the GPU cores, too. Total overkill, but why not? It’s going to take a little while to come in though, so I can’t get too excited yet.
@@alang253 There’s a big difference between “need” and “would like to have”. The Mac Studio now is and will for years to come be my primary desktop, and I actually am making use of the GPU in it, and coupled with that new LG 40” 5120x2160 Thunderbolt monitor it’s been fantastic. And I’m not exactly someone who lives on a tight budget either.
how sure are you that you can do multiple displays per port? have you got a working method? This is something I would like to do, but Apple seems to think its unncessary to do more than one screen per port going by what they told me in store and also via AppleCare... I've been trying to get a thunderbolt 3 dock to do it, but no joy so far
I'm such an idiot. While weighing up the new studio vs M1 mini+dock I figured the $1000 saved was good, but what clinched it was the M1 was available early April, and the studio wouldn't arrive until May. And now I've been sitting here thinking "I could have had the perfect computer if I had just waited a month!" *sigh*
What 32 inch monitor for use with Mac mini and gaming pc with 1080ti do you recommend? Using Mac mini to play with final cut and productivity. Torn between 32 ergo ultra and dell S3422DWG
As hard as I want one of this, I love the 5k screen of my 2020 iMac (nothing fancy, 6-core i5, 128gb RAM own upgrade)... so to replace it, I would need 2k studio plus 1600 Studio Display..and $3600 is just too much money to justify. if Apple offered to transform an 5k iMac screen, as a standlone screen for a modest fee, I would jump in the Studio desktop.
IO is great, but it is conspiring to not mount my 2 external SSD drives at the same time (Because I cheaped out on 512GB storage) they have the same chipset, cant be using too much power, but wont work together from boot/wake. Unless I plug them in, in a specific order everythime! frustrating
How would this work for someone that just uses their computer for 'basic' use? Not a video editor, blogger, vlogger - just basic home use? I want something that will last for a looooong time and be useable for at least a decade. Maybe some iRacing at some point, if it ever goes to scout camp or whatever so it will run that? Had a new iMac 24" for a week before I returned it because of some of these mac v windows personal issues. Thanks
I also think the Mac mini when the new one comes out will have the m2 and I think the biggest thing that will make people go nuts is the single core performance will be faster than even the ultra. I do believe the m1 single core is just as fast as the m1 pro, max, and ultra. So the m2 will be a bit faster just on single core. We shall see. Not sure if they did away with the Mac mini. I don’t think they did. Will ink to be they will make it with the m2 and like 24gb of ram because they can’t make it better than the studio. They will have to keep it back a bit. Let’s face it with intel alderlake or however you spell it that chip is super fast single core and I think now apple will have to stay ahead a bit but so many things.
I recently inherited my moms windows laptop after she passed. Boy I’m spoiled with my MacBook Pro and at the same time I realized how much I disliked windows in some cases
I bought a 27' imac back in the day for 1700$. A solid pc + 27 display, when the usual display size was 24 inch. Apple with it's overblown product portfolio is moving more and more in the direction it was before Steve Jobs came back.
I'm seriously thinking of buying the Mac Studio and I've watched all your stuff about this bit of kit. May I ask what its like using Davinci Resolve and rendering a 4K timeline with a simple colour grade of Noise Rediction (3 frames), simple colour correction, and Sharpening? My AMD Ryzen 3900x computer with a RTX 3070 can't render a 4k Timeline with these settings. I either have to drop the timeline to 1080 and live with that, or cheat and upscale a 1080 timeline during the render. But sadly my 3070 does not have enough vRAM to render a 4k timeline with Noise Reduction.
This is exactly why I purchased the Mac Studio (base model). When I upgraded my camera to the Sony A7iv, my 2019 MacBook Pro would stutter when color grading and applying corrections (sharpening). Now I don’t have to worry with editing on my current workflow (4K/10bit 4:2:2). I can add fusion titles with no hiccups. Very happy with the Mac Studio.
Yeah the new m1's are a whiz at handling video footage, I don't use noise reduction in resolve but with my 3 layers of HEVC files even the m1 standard did a great job and the m1 max is a breeze.
Gary talking about the potato 🥔 internet connection he has with almost 40Mb/s, me watching on 4Mb/s, the fun part that my internet connection could get worse 😂 down to Kb/s.
Mac mini has always had that IO (including USB-A), mac studio is no different. And the IO on the Macbook Pro is still USB C, despite what they brought back which is total bs. There should be at least two usb A ports on the Mac book Pro 14 and 16. So they didn't really bring back necessary IO you still need to plug in a freaking dongle to get more usb A ports and an ethernet jack. Wifi sucks.
Hi Gary great video. Im thinking of buying the base Mac studio, but I had been thinking of upgrading to 1TB SSD. Now I’ve been thinking should I upgrade to 2TB SSD or stick with 1TB SSD and upgrade to 64 GB ram. I’d like to hear your thoughts.
I'm sorry. I'm not Gary. But I will still reply. I have the base with a 2 TB ssd. It was just about $2600 with tax from the academic store (no apple care, just tax). You save about a few hundred. Normally $2600 is your subtotal going from the regular store $2599 * (1 + .1025) = $ 2,865.40. Using the academic store, you save $265 since the 2 tb is about $60 cheaper on the academic store? Not a student? Take p.e. But then you'd end up spending that $300 you saved on the Mac Studio on a 2 credit PE test. I heard 64 gigs is the sweet spot. But if you just have 1 app open, you're fine with the 32. 128 gigs of ram is just nit needed at all.. Since macs are expensive, maybe upping your GPU cores may be your first good move. I wish I did that. Iys only $200 on regular. About $180 on academic. And if you're going academic, you just moved up to the regular price but with 32 core gpu. And then to move up to 1 TB that's $200 regular $180 academic. Hence, subtotal ~$2200 academic ~$2399 regular, total regular $2645 regular total ~$2425 academic. Now if you want all of this plus 64 gigs ram, you're looking at a $3100 computer. It's kind of a souped up base but may be not as fast as the Ultra. Nut if you have $3100, you're sweet spot may consists of: 64 gigs ram 10 core cpu 32 core gpu 1 TB However of you want 2 TB, you're souped up base will starting reaching the Ultra price range but not act Ultra at $3529 roughly with tax. And of you're going to spend $3500 on a base, it's better to spend $600 more to get Ultra since you're so darn close But if you're willing to settle at $3100 and a 1 tb 64 gigs ram 10 core cpu 32 core GPU, then your base will still be souped up but Stay closer to you budget and performance. And if you're willing to stay at 32 gigs ram you can stay in thr $2,000-$2500 range.
@@DerekMckean thanks for the reply. Im in Denmark where the base model studio Costs $2400 with 10 core cpu & 32core GPU it costs $2640 then an upgrade to 2TB brings the price up to $3360. Then if i decide to upgrade to 64GB ram that will be a final Price of $4100. The price of the base Ultra is $4820. We pay 25% tax on everything in Denmark.
@@normanrobson9957 25%? Yikes. And I thought 10.25% was high. So you have to pay 2.5 times our state tax. New York state has the highest state tax at 12.7%. So your country has double the state tax of New York.

Rural isn't the problem, conservative haters of free markets are the problem. They only want Comcast monopolies for their cronies.
they want to make their connectivity work first, plenty of threads on support forum with issues on thunderbolt, usb-c, usb-a disconnecting with no other solution but to physically unplug and plug back in again. Apple deny any and all responsibility due to the accessory being 3rd party!
To solve my server need, I bought a Base Model M1 Mac Mini (256gb & 8gb) with 10Gbt ethernet from the Apple refurbished store. Got an OWC Stax (with 1x 2TB HDD & 1x 2TB SDD), then connected my OWC ThunderBay 8 via Thunderbolt 3. The home server is a clone of the remote server I have in a data center. It sits under my desk, and is accessed via TeamViewer. Just under $1,000 for my home server setup.
Nice! My problem is that since moving to Monterey I've had real problems with my thunder bay flex and ended up building my home server off of a more standard computer setup.
I need and want 20 (or more) cpu cores and 4TB of SSD for my work so I dont want the "cheapest" version, and the correct word to use is inexpensive, not "cheap"

512 has been fine for me but if you are going to spend money anywhere absolutely getting a bigger hard drive is a good idea.
@@TheEverydayDad Very interesting -- thanks Gary, you may save me some money!
Looking forward to the M2 Pro Mac Mini vs M1 Base Studio comparison!!
So glad YOU did this video. I really need one of these. I'd probably still need a dock, tho. 😄😄😄
“Potato Internet” put it on a shirt and I’ll buy it 🤣
What if you plugged a dock into each of the built in ports on the Studio? Now that would be an interesting test, what's the thru put when using the Mac Studio as a NAS?
I wonder how many docks you could chain off of a single port and then quadruple that out across the studio.
First
For the first time RUclips has given me a notification on a new video without being 5 hours late🙌
Welcome to the early team!
@@TheEverydayDad
Thank you 😊
Great video!!! I'm curious are the internal speakers better than the mini m1?
Do you edit video off local storage or off your NAS? Local storage is the one upgrade that I am pondering for the Mac Studio
Yup, I’d buy it for the connectivity and the extra power over my M1 except I am doing very little video so the M1 is just fine. Plus I have $250 sunk in an OWC thunderbolt dock. But yes if I needed the power it’s great value.
actualy if you don't need the optimisations for video editing, the Mini is a better machine (smaller, more silent, less power consuption)
No matter what I will get the ultra even though I don’t need all of it lol. You never know when you might.
Never need a dock lol .. I’ll still need one , seriously needs more ports if you work in sound our video
Sold my m1 Mini for 800$ on ebay (keep you boxes) and love my Studio. No more BT/Airpod issues and upgrade only cost me a grand all told (with vet discount)
Have you had any issues like the bluetooth/air pod issues we had with the Mini?
Thanks for sharing. Blessings on your day!
I suggested to Apple that they should have 1 Ultra single core at 4ghz etc then rest high performance and efficiency cores. That way that 1 ultra core can give a huge performance boost on single core apps.
I thought the ultra was 2 max’s linked together so if you get the max that basically is the other half of the ultra. I could be wrong
I mostly work with a gazillion browser tabs open and do some light photo editing. Which version would be best for heavy heavy browser use?
Hey Everyday Dad, Can I connect my macbook pro to the mac studio to use the macbook pro as my display, keyboard, and mouse? It's a 2017 15 inch Macbook Pro, with 4 usb-c as its input/outputs. Love your channel thanks!
I don't understand, you can't hear the fans but other people even return it due the distracting fan noise on normal use.
I’ve also seen complaints but wonder if those people every had a gaming PC and dealt with GPU coil whine. As long as it’s a low purr, I’ll gladly retire by 2009 cheese grater.
@@havok3344 PCs are shit!
Potato internet = 39mbit upload. Lol here in England we get a tenth of that.
Jesus what a total waste of money. You’ll never tell the difference of all that power if a mini is all you truly need
Hey who am I to tell you what to spend your money on! Sounds like a fun setup
I honesty don't need this, I just what it for the ports and the ability to push 3 displays without jumping thru hoops
how sure are you that you can do multiple displays per port? have you got a working method? This is something I would like to do, but Apple seems to think its unncessary to do more than one screen per port going by what they told me in store and also via AppleCare... I've been trying to get a thunderbolt 3 dock to do it, but no joy so far
Are you in Georgia? We lived in SE Coastal GA for 7 years and Jekyll Island is amazing!
Nice video! I type this on an Intel Hackintosh, but Apple has turned things around and I'll buy a Studio. Apple is back!
Are you sure you can’t use the iMac as a display. You can with the older models.
IO is great, but it is conspiring to not mount my 2 external SSD drives at the same time (Because I cheaped out on 512GB storage)
they have the same chipset, cant be using too much power, but wont work together from boot/wake.
Will they be making a new version this techtober?
Too late. I've already bought a mid-range Mac Studio and I'm absolutely happy.
Apple with it's overblown product portfolio is moving more and more in the direction it was before Steve Jobs came back.
should i get a NAS to solve storage problems or upgrade the ssd in the Mac Studio if i want to get one?
That’s why I returned my MBA M2 for the Mac Studio M1 Max, I get a way better machine for the price 👍🏻
1:50
that kinda hurts...cause i am using it with my macbook air🤣
@TheEverydayDad Any way to use iMac 27 inch 2012 model as monitor to Mac Studio M1 Max ? Any solution would be great
I'm seriously thinking of buying the Mac Studio and I've watched all your stuff about this bit of kit.
Always when i apple eco system. I go minor or mid range no apple care & storage memory upgrades that way I can upgrade 2 nhalf years later if needed
I almost always get the base model products.
How is this model while editing 4k video? Hot knife through butter?
if you're a professional photographer who uses LR all the time, you NEED the 20 CPU core ULTRA
Gary talking about the potato 🥔 internet connection he has with almost 40Mb/s, me watching on 4Mb/s, the fun part that my internet connection could get worse 😂 down to Kb/s.
Good video but was kind of expecting more along the lines of “buy this one because x/y/z, instead of the Ultra SKU”.
I have a lot of reasons to buy a Mac Studio. One reason not to::
- My wallet
Should I buy a 27 inches 4K monitor or a 1440 one?
I wish there was an M2 Pro Mac Mini with 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD. I don't need the Studio for Logic and I don't need the Max chip GPU power.
will it work with lg ultrawide properly how we can connect which cable we need to use?
Nut if you have $3100, you're sweet spot may consists of:
64 gigs ram
10 core cpu 32 core gpu
1 TB
However of you want 2 TB, you're souped up base will starting reaching the Ultra price range but not act Ultra at $3529 roughly with tax. And of you're going to spend $3500 on a base, it's better to spend $600 more to get Ultra since you're so darn close
But if you're willing to settle at $3100 and a 1 tb 64 gigs ram 10 core cpu 32 core GPU, then your base will still be souped up but Stay closer to you budget and performance.
5:18 - "Potato internet" isn't the problem of your rural area, it's the problem of Republicans and anti-American conservatives who ban and outlaw competition. Chattanooga, TN has the fastest internet in the country because they allow EPB to compete. Other cities tried to do the same and got cancelled by the Konservative Kancel Kulture. Rural isn't the problem, conservative haters of free markets are the problem. They only want Comcast monopolies for their cronies.
get starlink its awesome we just got it and wow its 90 times fasters then the over priced underpower and liminted data of a rocket hub
they want to make their connectivity work first, plenty of threads on support forum with issues on thunderbolt, usb-c, usb-a disconnecting with no other solution but to physically unplug and plug back in again. Apple deny any and all responsibility due to the accessory being 3rd party!
Just got one, added more ram 1tb ssd, should arrive in 4 months 😔
@@TheEverydayDad - I remember your posts about that. However, 10-days into the new setup, and now issues.
Thank you for this but why no mention of Apple Studio Display costing another 2 grand?
