Bro this video literally blew my mind I just went out and threw my aviar almost 300 feet like it was no big deal. Thank you so much for such an in-depth and instructional video
Dude...I just started playing disc golf for about 3 months now. THIS video improved my backhand by 150% after just watching it once. Thank you so much!
Shit, I learned more in the first 5 minutes than all the other videos I watched before combined. Thanks man, hitting the course tomorrow to try this out.
This was a great tutorial. Literally just started playing earlier this month and only played 6 times ever, and a few extra sessions throwing in open fields. The grip advise was the only thing I really changed, today, and it added almost 100 feet to my backhands. Prior my longest throw was at 240 feet from a couple of weeks ago. Today i threw my Shryke with almost no effort at 334 feet (Right handed). Also, I just started throwing left handed about 2 weeks ago. I also, threw a few Rivers 285-300 feet, today. The left hands needs to be a little more accurate, but that'll come after a few more sessions. Trying to get both backhands to 400 feet in the next couple of months. I am still rounding, and bringing the head up to early. So there is a ton of room for improvement. Again, this is one of the best youtube vids I have seen on the backhand. Keep it up.
Been throwing forehand for years but have realized I need to throw back hand to really separate myself. Thanks for the tips! The grip tip really helped!
Oddly I didn't learn a whole lot new with this video, but at the same time it is one of the best ones out there for throwing backhand. No idea who this guy is but he did a great job of combining all the nuggets of information found across dozens and dozens of videos that I've spent hours watching. Pretty much wish I'd seen this one first. Great job putting all this information into a single, well thought out and easy to follow video.
This in a nut shell is probably the most concise how to throw a backhand video I have viewed, it is super basic in the way you explained each aspect of the technique from the grip all the way to the follow thru. I got hooked on Disc Golf a couple years ago at the age of 69, my son has patiently help me bit by bit and I now have a half way decent backhand. Thanks for your video, the points you covered will definitely help with honing my backhand.
The Grip Tip Video ;) I have also slightly adjusted my grip. Feels like I am more stable on my powergrip-throws now.. more consistent. That tip alone is worthy an own video!
I'm a complete noob at disc golf. Only played 4 rounds, including this morning's round. This 1 simple grip placement change, drastically improved my score and drastically helped me to throw more straight without the disc sailing off back to the left. Front 9 at the local course is a par 32. I was scoring in the 50's until today. Scored a 42 just by using this grip technique. Of course I have a lot of work to do to continue to improve but I'm not frustrated like the last few times I played wondering why my disc kept curving back left. Thanks for the video. Hope you see this even after the video being out for a while.
This is such a great backhand guide. I've been playing 10+ years as a forehand dominate (only) player. I've watched a lot of form videos and practiced a lot, but could never figure out how to throw any kind of usable backhand. This is the video that made it finally click and helped me understand the mechanics behind the motions. I went out to the field last night after spending time practicing these steps without a disc, and, after only a few mis-throws, I was consistently getting full flights with a backhand drive. It felt incredible after getting nowhere for so many years. Thank you so much.
I have played for 20 years. This video has pointed out all the things that screwed mentor distance. I am going to practice. I round, I pull.my head, this is awesome
That grip change just took of like 7-8 throws on my round by putting alone! Still working on the drives but man, my putting feels so much more stable now that I learned to keep the nose down!
I just started playing. Your videos changed everything for me, especially this one. I went from an average of 80 feet to an average of 180 with my max throw of 233. I'm not doing the x-step yet but i will get there. Thanks GDG, you Rock man!
Wow, what a great teach- felt like an expert friend was teaching me one on one right before I hit the course. Exactly what I was looking for. Keep it up and thank you for the video!
Outstanding video! Been playing for nearly 2 decades and just learned about the correct grip from this video. In the past I would simply overcompensate with turning my wrist and release angle to prevent nose up throws. It's the little things that often make the biggest difference! Thank you!
Ive watched a lot of form reviews and this is one of the very best! I think the head movement is key to allow the shoulders to rotate properly. Thank You
Hey, thanks for the mention. The ProPull will definitely help create muscle memory for the backhand and reinforce what throwing down a line feels like.
Great job. Can't wait to put these instructions into practice. I just started playing with my son and I just shared the video with him. Both of our shoulders have been hurting, now I see why. Thanks
First tutorial I have seen that explains to position the disk between the index and middle finger for nose down. In my second year of playing and learning. I have been trying to find just the right grip and now I think this is the key I have been missing. I have been compensating with my arm swing and wrist position to get nose down. That has reduced my power and never felt the perfect grip at release. This new position feels much stronger for the grip and down angle. I can't wait to play later today. Thank you so much I am subscribing. I tried the grip and now I realize it will take some practice to get it perfected. It will take a couple hundred throws to feel more natural, but I still think it's key to improvement.
Agreed I just saw this, Going to work on this to prevent a bit of my nose up problems. Still not sure how to actually let go of the disc though. Was watching this video in chunks and still don't really know how to actually release the disc. Been trying to find stuff that is more than just throw the disc or just let go.
You ask a good question. From my experience and from watching the pros and other people throw, no one seems to actively open their hand on a backhand drive. An upshot and putt is something different. On a drive, you want to let the snap powered from your body release the disc at its optimal point. That is why bringing the disc forward in a linear motion is so important. You want it to snap straight ahead, not to the left or right (early “release” and griplock). The snapping motion of the disc will naturally let it accelerate out of your hand. That’s why making sure you’re not squeezing the disc with all your strength is important. There has to be some give. I’m working on a part 2 to this video to talk about some of these things.
@@GladiatorDiscGolf Thanks for that answer, as release consistency have been killing my game a lot. Excited to try holding the disc a bit different tomorrow. But early release and griplock are my doom on distance throws, I seem to bounce between the two severely and adds a huge amount of inconsistency. As part of the problem I have I believe is caused by strong hands and my fingers not being balanced like a normal disc golfer. Being a high rev rate bowler my natural grip strength and strongest fingers are my middle two. And are far stronger. And nothing with my release feels natural in discgolf.
It will become more comfortable. The most important thing is that you practice good form first before worrying about distance. Also, recording yourself with your phone will exponentially increase your improvement!
One thing that really made my nose-angle more consistent was when I realized I need to grip just as hard with my thumb as my other fingers. I know this sounds simple but when I started actually pushing with my thumb it just made everything so more consistent.
Great video! A lot of great things for me to focus on the next time I'm out and great explanations for the reasoning for the required mechanics. Awesome job!
The best tutorial video I have seen so far. I do want to know is. I am having trouble with the cross step on the approach how important is the cross step or is there a another version of this
I feel you on getting stuck, I've been stuck at the same distance for a couple years lol. I've been going and watching a lot of these videos again and I've picked up so many bad habits.
Will you make an additional episode on How To Forehand? As someone with not much frisbee experience I find that forehands are a lot more difficult for me than backhands. This video is great tho and definitely helped me improve my backhand and get it more consistent. Thanks!
I'm a Lefty and I bat right handed in baseball, so it translates PERFECT for me! the motions are just like swinging a bat.....from the weight shifting to the follow through. When I throw the disc, I imagine myself swinging a bat but obviously throwing the disc instead and it flies great. I've been playing for about 2 months now. (We all start some time!) By the way, the biggest takeaway from this video I learned was the disc in the hand placement. I'll try it out tomorrow. My discs always tend to flip up and turn over too soon even for a lower speed midrange like an Avenger SS.
So, as for pivoting the plant foot, is there any advise concerning the shoes... ??? On turf or on a concrete tee pad, is there sole selection based on tee pad type??? But tee pad is only that, a greater percenrage of throws will be from turf , hopefully , so any advice or recommendations for shoe selection??? Is the Merrels Moab 2 a good disc golf shoe.??? Help please...
Good question! I used some cheap ozarks or merrells for a little while and they worked great. I currently own Adidas Terrex AX3. It’s one of the more affordable options. I did an unboxing/review of the shoe. That video should help answer some of your questions. A grippy hiking shoe will perform well on all types of surfaces and will last a long time. I’m not aware of anyone who changes their shoes based on tee pads. It might be a thing, and I just don’t know about it. As for the Merrell Moab 2, I’m not as familiar but just by doing a quick search they seem to be pretty good quality. Like most athletic shoes (in my experience), the more you pay for them, the better the quality.
@@GladiatorDiscGolf Thank you for your quick response... I did try both the Adidas Terrex Ax3 and the Adidas Swift R2 Gtx.. Sadly, for me, those shoes exhibited a very loose fit in the heel... As much as I wanted to like them, I had to send them both back... The fit was great, except my heels wanted to lift completely out of the shoe when walking, let alone turning on a pivot... Being a noob, first year (3 monnths) throwing, I still have many things to find out, especially form and timing.. Great video and hope to learn more. Thanks...
I'm cheesing right now!!!! A lot of videos you see on here (the Tube) center around , in my opinion, half the basics and more so individual preference......not here. I've been trying to find that "video", that "Great White Buffalo" and I need not look further. Everything is stated and explained (BIG deal with explanations) in a way to where an individual can see exactly where they are lacking. I am about to work with these steps with a splendid stupor about it. Thanks so much for the tips!!!
I pressed "like" before the intro started. :p Seriously, this was a fantastic tutorial and I was going through the steps with you as you taught. I'll watch this again later to help me drill this in. As a beginner this has been my biggest weakness. I feel like I just don't know how to throw, so I've been inconsistent. This video will help me be more consistent. Thank you!
I just subbed of this one video. Great breakdown of all the moving parts, and clear explanation. Thus us a video I’ll be. I I guess back to periodically to check-in on my progress. Thanks!
Thanks. Frisbee disc golf is much different than throwing Frisbees in the 70's. I had some skill at that time but I'm much older and these discs fly much differently. I learned the grip, flat throwing and the power pocket. I've been rounding my throws and finding that 200-225' is as far as I can throw the disc with my current form and strength. This video will definitely help. Is there a 65+ league? LOL
Your vids are super helpful. Thanks. The hips are the hardest part I think. Just feels really awkward. Is it like a spring uncoiling from the hips up? Or is everything happening relatively at the same time once the pullback is complete?
Hi, I've been playing disc golf since April, and I'm still throwing backhand from a standstill. I don't have any forehand to speak of. I'm throwing pretty much anything 5+ speed 180-220'. I've been working on not rounding and nose angle. I was wondering if I should work on perfecting my standstill form before adding the walk-up or will adding the walk up be such a big change that I need to add it first. Thanks for any advice you can give.
Great question! Keep working on standstill shots until you have good form. Don’t worry so much on distance. That will come with good clean form. Once you work out the kinks and issues in your BH, you can add the x-step. This will help you focus on the x-step process without sacrificing your form.
This is amazing. I've played for a year with my own made up shit form, only lately started doing a runup and trying to throw properly, and it's terrible. Obviously seen a lot of tutorials, but this was up there.
There is one more thing i have learned about throwing really straight flat. Have your follow through swing in the same heights as your shoulders. Above shoulders for hyzer and below for anhyzer.
So you actually want to rotate on the flat of your foot or your heel. I don’t know the physiological reason exactly, but several golfers/health specialists have said that rotating on your toes is not good. Similar to a baseball/softball player when they are batting, their front foot rotates on their heel.
Hands down the best backhand tutorial video I've seen. Hope this gains some more traction!
Thank you so much! Feel free to share with everyone you know!
I feel the same way, I have been missing a few details and practice tips from all the others I have watched. So excited to go try to throw better now.

Your vids are super helpful. Thanks. The hips are the hardest part I think. Just feels really awkward. Is it like a spring uncoiling from the hips up? Or is everything happening relatively at the same time once the pullback is complete?
Good video
Great video : )
Thank you! Glad I could help!
Question: Does anyone get a blister on their index finger from ripping backhand drives with a power grip?
I’ve seen it happen to people on Instagram and RUclips, but I’ve never had it happen to me.
@@GladiatorDiscGolf haha ok cool thank you for your reply brotha!
Some people use glove or tape. Works a treat.
There is one more thing i have learned about throwing really straight flat. Have your follow through swing in the same heights as your shoulders. Above shoulders for hyzer and below for anhyzer.
On the follow thru, do you rotate on the ball of your front foot? Also do u think u might do a video for hyzer and anhyzer backhand throws
So you actually want to rotate on the flat of your foot or your heel. I don’t know the physiological reason exactly, but several golfers/health specialists have said that rotating on your toes is not good. Similar to a baseball/softball player when they are batting, their front foot rotates on their heel.
Also, I have a video out for hyzerflips! The premise of that video will apply to hyzers as well. I do not have a video yet on anhyzers.
Awesome!!! I just started playing about 4 months ago, and im addicted... you have the most informative videos!! Thanks for all the pointers!
Thank you man! Please feel free to share the link to my channel!
