"The idea you had of me, who was she? A never-needy, ever-lovely jewel, whose shine reflects on you." may be my favorite lyric that Taylor has ever written. With one line she is able to perfectly describe the type of man who sees their partner as an accessory to make them look good, not a human being with feelings and needs.

The red scarf is a metaphor for her innocence and her virginity. This song (extended version) makes me tear up everything I hear it. Taylor's lyrics flows like you're actually there with her.

The fight scene was improvised by Sadie and Dylan too. Taylor told them to just go with it. She said she couldn’t cut and just let it go and that’s the result. The gaslighting during the fight is just all too real. It shows JG made Taylor think she wasn’t aloud to feel what she felt like her feelings didn’t matter. That’s just not truthful. Like just because you don’t remember saying or doing things in a relationship doesn’t mean they didn’t happen. Diminishing the others feelings is gaslighting and Taylor wrote and spoke on it in such a beautiful way and that’s something she does All Too Well lol
No one could have scripted that gaslighting any better. I think what made this song/film so good is almost everyone has gone through everything in the story during their lives at one point or another.
He even SOUNDED like Jake Gyllenhaal! That voice and the way he spoke was just like him.

I still can't get over "Did the twin flame bruise paint you blue." Like this isn't even just a good lyric but since Taylor & Jake are Sagittarius and Fire signs.....it's really a poetic way to call him out.

Oh, yes, that song was about Taylor's experience with Jake Gyllenhaal. She dated him when she was 20 and he was 29. This is her 10 minute version of the song; originally the record label had her cut it down to like 5 minutes and 30 seconds. After the whole Scooter Braun incident, she re-recorded all of her songs, calling them "Taylor's version"; this was one of those songs. If you ever get the chance, watch her 2014 Grammy performance of this song; it was an emotional performance.
One of my favorite lines of the song, is, "After plaid shirt days and nights, when you made me your own, now you mail back my things, and I walk home alone"; it is one of my faves because of how heavy the meaning is. I believe she mentioned in an interview once how her mother introduced her to symbolism when she was very young, and she was fascinated with how you can take words that have no particular meaning to you in itself, and turn them into something that does have meaning on the sly. Regarding, "plaid shirt days and nights where you made me your own"; when you think of "plaid shirt days and nights--sleepwear comes to mind, right? Popular sleepwear is flannel, and plaid is a pattern of flannel. She could mention any type of sleepwear, but she wants you to specifically think "sleepwear", because she is trying to set-up a particular imagery/message. She is putting him, "days and night", and "plaid shirt" altogether in the same sentence--meaning she had been spending days and nights with him, where he "made her HIS OWN"--Essentially saying, he was her "first". That is why there is so much pain for her, regarding him. That is why that album, Red, is so painful. Although, they weren't together a long time (I think 2-3 months?), she "gave herself to him". She shared with him something she considered sacred, something she never shared with anyone else, and then after it happened, she and him were no more--which this line comes into play, "I'm a crumpled up piece of paper lying here, because I remember it all too well". She felt he was "the one", gave herself to him thinking she and him would probably be married one day and/or she was endgame for him, and then he was done with her and threw her out like garbage; maybe that is what went down or maybe that isn't, but to her that is how she felt it went down, and expressed it as such.
Off topic a bit, but, regarding the word "Red", there is a line in the song, "Red"--"loving him was burning red", and that line is referenced in her album "Lover" in the song, "Daylight"-"I once believed love would be burning red, but it's golden". It felt like both songs are bookends or something; Jake was the guy she thought she would have a happily-ever-after with, and Joe is the guy she knows she will have that happy ending with.
Sorry for the long post. I know you guys didn't ask for an essay. I just wanted to share some thoughts of mine.
Anyway, if you have the time, definitely check out her Grammy performance of this song. It will be worth the watch.
A lot of what you said is spot on! The only thing that I think has changed is him being her first (which is a stupid thing for me to focus on bc it’s none of my business). But in Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve off of Midnights, which is allegedly about John Mayer (bc she mentions her being 19, like in Dear John), she has the line “give me back my girlhood it was mine first”. A lot of people, including myself, see this to mean that John was her first. And she’s even said in an interview that while the scarf is a symbol in this song, it’s not necessarily a symbol of virginity. My thought it that since Jake was after John, maybe he made her believe that she could trust him and since she’d done it before it’s not a big deal if she does it again 🤷🏼♀️ odd logic, but she was only 20. And then he broke that trust so soon after she had let her guard down (maybe?). But with her being 20, and wanting to think he wouldn’t let her down like past relationships, I can see how she could describe this relationship as a true loss (not just symbolic) of innocence.

It's nice to read your comments and I agree I don't like to talk about Tay's first... But I think the line in WCS does refer to her losing her innocence, her purity or her child self at some extend. And with the guy in ATW is to whom she decided to be intimate with.

@@joeslinky Obviously this is a reenactment, but it’s a reenactment of what Jake did to Taylor. So when I comment on “him” gaslighting “her” I’m not referring to the actors whom I assume like each other. I mean Jake gaslighting Taylor, whom the actors are portraying in a scene that Taylor has explained what happened to her and tells the actors to take it from there. It doesn’t take a genius to understand this basic premise.

Taylor is an absolute lyrical genius and if her works up to this song didn’t prove that then this just solidified it. The fact that the song itself is ten minutes yet doesn’t drag on only builds and keeps you engaged is such an amazing thing. Not only that you can feel the emotion in each word she sings, the short film was everything as a Taylor fan I could’ve wanted. Everything was exactly as I’d pictured it in my brain from the first time I heard the short version. She delivered a masterpiece with this

This film was originally a 5 min song. Taylor dated Jake Gyllenhall when she was 21, and she really loved him, even though it was a very short relationship. He was much older to her, but when they were dating, it was like a fairytale for her. Thinking that he was 'the one' she gave herself to him. But soon after, he dumped her. This started with him not showing up for her 21st birthday, which happened when they were dating, and he had told her and comforted her saying that he would be there, but he never showed up. This incident is also highlighted in the song called The Moment I Knew from the Red Album. Soon after this, they broke up, or rather he broke up with her and left her very very very heartbroken. In her documentary- Miss Americana, Taylor mentions that this was a catalyst for many psychological paths that she went down, and not all of them were beneficial. She was really broken because she thought he was the one and trusted him and he left her without a second thought. After this, she released the song All Too Well on her Red Album, which was at the time only 5min long. In an interview, she let it slip that there was a 10 min version, the original version which she hadn't released as a 10min song was too long. But us Swifties didn't let it go, and finally in the Red record she released the entire 10 min version, along with a Short Film as she felt that it would really help us understand this song. The people who are not Swifties, and only know Taylor for her popular songs like Shake it Off or Blank Space or Love Story- they think these are her best songs and think these songs define Taylor. But that's definitely not true and us Swifties know that the songs like Getaway Car, Cruel Summer, Don't Blame Me and all the other unknown songs are her best. If there is one thing all Swifties agree on it is that All Too Well is the best and most emotional song Taylor has ever released.
The lyrics itself symbolise so much! For example- I'll get older but your lovers stay my age. Everyone knows about Jake Gyllenhaal relationships, how he dates girls wayyyyy younger than him. Taylor shows here that she grew up and got older, but his new girlfriends always stayed her age- young and innocent. The scarf here symbolizes her innocence. The fact that once he took it, it will always stay with him, and haunt him is what Taylor says here.

Taylor mentions now that at the time when the song was first released and any interviewer asked about it, it was very hard for her to keep it together and she would take breaks to go to the bathroom and have a good cry. But now that she's finally made peace with what happened and is in a happy relationship with Joe Alwyn, she decided the make a self-directed Short Film to give us fans what we've always wanted- a music video for All Too Well, and she's done it so well that she won a Grammy for her directing skills!

Dylan O’Brien from teen wolf and the maze runner trilogy and Sadie sink from stranger things and fear street trilogy in one video I was so excited the first time I saw this both are brilliant actors the line that hits home is “you call me up again just to break me like promise so casually cruel in the name of being honest” and “time won’t fly it’s like I’m paralyzed by it like to be my old self again but I’m still trying to it after plaid shirt days and nights when you made me your own” those lines really hit home.
“I still remember the first fall of snow and how it glistened as it fell.” Something magical about the first snow ( beginning of the love affair, maybe even her first) and how it was great (glistened) all the way until it crashed (as it fell). 😢

This song is definitely autobiographical, she herself said in Directors on Directors with Martin McDonagh that emotionally she was going through EXACTLY what the short film depicts. That’s why there’s no way she would have been able to direct this short film back in 2012.
In the making of video, she mentions that when she walks into the house at the beginning, you can see the red typewriter there, with the implication being that he gave her something she could create her art on :)

I actually think the fact that he goes so hard on him “not knowing what moment” she’s talking about, tells me he knew exactly what she was talking about, it was a conscious decision he made in the moment to appear to his friends like she wasn’t that important to him. And he got really uncomfortable when he got confronted about it. Because the truth is he just wanted to enjoy sleeping with her for awhile. Men do this with beautiful young women and they make them believe there’s a real chance at a future, because if they were honest that they just wanted to have sex they would get turned down by most young women and even though they could easily have casual hookups with women their own age, they see something young and hot and they just want to have it for a minute. It’s manipulative, and borderline predatory. And everyone knows it’s what’s happening and everyone pretends it’s ok because “she’s over 18”. 30+ year olds with 18-22 year olds is gross. 🤷🏻♀️

Uh yeah… half the comments on this video are people explaining the story behind this song. Many of them are super detailed explanations. Did you not read any comments before you left one of your own? No need to crazy punch a keyboard when the answer to your question has literally been right under your nose. But since you asked, here is a very brief explanation: The song is completely autobiographical. It is about her former relationship with Jake Gyllenhaal back in 2010. She was 20 and he was 29. Everything she talks about in the song and all the scenarios in the short film (except the ones at the end where she is older) are her own experiences. The scarf she talks about in the song is reportedly a metaphor for her virginity. There’s more metaphors, references to other songs, and other lore that I don’t really feel like explaining. If you want more information or a better explanation just read some other comments. Or, just look up “all too well taylor swift explained” and you’ll find lots of information.
