I think part of what’s so heartbreaking about this song to me is that it’s always been so obvious to me how badly Taylor has always wanted that one true love and wanted marriage and a life with someone. So to hear her begging a person who she obviously at one point thought was the one for her to just “do something” “say something”, etc is just crushing. And the line “and I wouldn’t marry me either” just really drives it home that she wanted marriage and it was going nowhere because, by the looks of it, he just gave up and stopped trying. It’s truly devastating. I really really hope she finds her happiness one day. She deserves it.
I don't think it's as simple as that. Based on past songs, it seems evident they both wanted marriage at some point, just at different points. I think the breaking point in their relationship is that they wanted two completely different things when it came to privacy and Taylor has been ready to get back into the limelight.
I think this song also points out a partial downside on Taylor's end... that she wasn't communicating these issues directly. She talks about sending signals and that he didn't think there was a problem, but maybe he genuinely didn't. Maybe there was a lack of communication on her end and she was internally falling out of love because of these "problems", but never outwardly told him "these are the issues I'm having". We weren't there of course, so this is just speculation based on song lyrics. I think she did find the love of her life with him and I'd be shocked if they didn't end up back together at some point.

@@aijsdijdni3401 i agree with the limelight thing. when she went into hiding before rep, she wanted the privacy and he was in his element of being private. then the pandemic forced that to happen again. totally a guess but i think she wanted to marry him during the Lover Era (Paper Rings and she says that line in I Think He Knows about locking it down cause the good ones never wait). i think he voiced about getting married because on Peace, she talks about giving him a child so they had to have talked about that. i think when she first started the process of working on Midnights, she said that Joe and Jack's gf Margaret were both away. maybe while he was away, she realized her career was the biggest priority. she said the more she works, the happier she is. i think the privacy was what she wanted but that changed. i think they both didn't want to compromise the limelight issue. if they couldn't communicate with each other, marriage wasn't going to happen anyway. after being with someone a long time, we can tell when they are in different moods but we can't read minds. This song makes me think they have had a few rough patches over the years (pheonix line) and i think it's them wanting different things at different times.

We're losing them is something (like a cliche) that's said in the emergency room when someone is dying out. She's using medical metaphors. The same with "I can't find a pulse, my heart won't start anymore", "my face was gray, but you wouldn't admit that we were sick". She has heartbeats playing in the background. It's like a situation where someone is about to flatline and they're doing everything they can to save it but they can't. I thought it was a clever use of words to portray what she's feeling.

I watched the video just waiting for them to notice her heartbeat in the background and was so sad when they never did!!! When she says I can’t find a pulse, my heart won’t start anymore and the heartbeat literally stops… chills 😢

As a woman, I know how hard and heartbreaking it is to say things like: I wouldn’t marry me either.
This line made me burst into tears.. to admit that maybe you're the problem and then go no no maybe it is you and just be so confused with it all.
I wish she'd give this song the All Too Well treatment - this song as a short video would be HEART WRENCHINGLY beautiful
But the thing was she wasn't the one that gave the "treatment", the fans were. She was even hesitant to play that song but a decade later it's just a fan fav song for her.

I don't think she even wanted to release this song if things worked out with Joe. She just wanted to let us know what actually happened from her perspective and for us to stop speculating nonsense some media tried to feed us. Taylor is famous for not talking directly about her personal relationships and this is her only way to let her know.
I think it's all still too fresh, she can barely sing Joe songs without "dissociating" or ... Idk a 6 year relationship is a long time to be with someone and it breaking is so hard to move on from 😢 plus it's not even a part of the actual album or on streaming platforms, many fans probably don't even know it exists
How can anyone not fall in love with her mind? To possess the gift of putting such intense feelings into such relatable lyrics, and then compose beautiful melodies to accompany those words. Her gift is immaculate, and it's freely given to anyone who wants to hear it. This HAS to be a contender for song of the year. It certainly contends with her best ever. And that's saying a lot.
The thing is, everyone gets used to things about their partner, no matter how amazing. You have to stay mindful and attentive and many people don't do that because they believe that the "right" love will always come naturally to you. But loving is a verb! You have to actively do it

Spot on about the breaking point. Funny thing. I’ve never really truly listened to Taylor Swifts lyrics. But I did this morning with this song. I’m a combat vet and for some reason the lines referencing the soldier fighting, front lines. Made me tear up. I’ve been married three times, and my first two wife’s left me because of my being gone to much, my changing from the wars I fought in, and my always wanting to keep fighting and going back. It was all simply too much for them. But I finally found a strong woman that understands me. It took me a lifetime to find her, but I would fight to the death for her. I would risk anything for her. I chose her. She’s my everything. Just like Taylor wanted in that song.

What's crazy to me about this is in Lavendar Haze she's basically gaslighting herself into being fine with not getting married but in reality she truly wanted to marry Joe but he obviously didn't want to. He didn't pay enough attention to her and didn't care so she left. This is more heartbreaking then ATW in my opinion because Joe was her longest ❤ they were together for 6 years, they built a life together and it all ended. I could be totally off, but when she said “Don’t you ignore me. I’m the best thing in this party”, it reminded me of YOYOK. Parties are mentioned 3 times in yoyok, the two that relates most to this song is when she says “I hosted parties and starved my body like I’d be saved by a perfect kiss” and “I search the party of better bodies just to learn that you never cared.” Still not completely sure of the meaning of yoyok, but it seems like she’s so desperate for this person to notice her and be with her. She does all of this to get his attention until she finally realizes that she’s on her own. In this song, she talks about how he doesn’t get it. He doesn’t understand or see the signs. And also how he doesn’t even know her really. And how he isn’t trying either. Ugh this makes it even sadder ☹️.

I mean imagine having around you a couple like Ryan Reynolds and Blake lively, which no one can have any doubt that live a couple life and constantly hype each other publicly, and then being in a relationship with a dude FOR SIX YEARS that clearly has no intention whatsoever of recognizing that he is so lucky of having a goddess like Taylor even giving him the time of day, all while she is always being generous to him and saying good things about him in public. How SAD. How empty you must feel. The dude was an ungrateful and selfish idiot.
I also found it interesting that the line right after that one is "I wouldn't marry me either...a pathological people pleaser". It reminded me of Archer a little bit, when she said "Who could ever leave me darling?...But who could stay?" It's like she's fighting with two parts of herself. The one who wants to shine and who knows she's the best thing at that party, but also the crippling self doubt and need for approval.

Of course I watched this through Patreon, but i wanted to comment over here. I'm among the minority that saw Midnights as a breakup album & I've been a very longtime Swiftie, & even for us, this might actually be the saddest song she's ever written. She's not even angry, which makes it so much more heartbreaking & the almost weak, exhausted way she says "Stop, you're losing me." And if no one had told you, they sampled Taylor's heartbeat for this from the heartbeat used in Wildest Dreams! As soon as i heard that i lost it & then she murdered us with that bridge where at the end when she's begging him to do something, RISK something, the echoing vocals are her practically screaming the words in desperation! And then, no more heartbeat. I haven't listened to it yet without tears!

I’m shocked that supposedly Joe was embarrassed and thought he wouldn’t get a break up song. He’s the longest relationship she’s had. He thought it wouldn’t come to this. What?! Did he know her at all? He was documented as saying he wasn’t embarrassed, but was flattered, when the songs were fun at the start. Then he broke her heart and he gets this song, too.

The fact that he was good to her at the beginning doesn't erase the fact that he also liked better then, when she was fragile and vulnerable and depending on him. He has never liked her being the worldwide superstar that she is. And don't come to me with the 'he is quite and private' excuse. While she was generous and publicly hyped him, he never in six freaking years had the minimum generosity to do the bare minimum for her. And he clearly kept her in a roommate situation for 6 years ffs, they are in their 30s and he wasted her time by NOT choosing her. I find it very interesting when she says she sent signals and he wouldn't admit they were sick. Everyone seems to be going back and forth if she has communicated with him or was expecting him to know. When she talks about being a pheonix, I think that's regarding a few rough patches over the years. Before the final blow, she was probably sending signals because she's tired of talking about the same topics and he is avoiding her because he doesn't know how to handle things either. Probably wanted different things at different times and this was both of them not being able to handle it anymore. They probably wanted to stay together but knew it wasn't going to work and both stopped communicating. It's like each one couldn't break up with the other. I think she wanted to be in the limelight again, be with her partner on red carpets and whatnot and he still wanted to be private. They both didn't want to compromise and that's okay. I think when she says she's the best thing at this party, maybe when they are at parties or in group hangouts, he spends more time away from her than by her side. I feel like this song proves Bejeweled is about Joe.

The bridge is soul-crushing. "How long can we be a sad song" hits so hard after listening to her interviews where she talks about how they bonded over/love sad songs. And the songs they've written together are her saddest.
I just WISH I could understand how you would leave someone as insightful, talented, and downright incredible as her. I get wanting to keep your life private and wanting to build that life together but you can’t hold someone back from the life they want to live. Love comes with sacrifice, and he clearly didn’t understand that. It breaks my heart for her.

She had to know they couldn’t get married unless he wanted to be called Mr Swift for the rest of his life. And that will be the case with anyone she marries unless the guy is actually bigger than she is (like Tom Cruise/Brad Pitt level of fame that they have had for a long time). Also, marrying, especially internationally is messy and at her level of course you have a pre-nup, which operates on the premise you won’t make it and takes away from what should be joyful. They could have a commitment ceremony and even had kids without getting married. But I suspect he knew this before she did and started to pull away (even if it is subconsciously), she saw it happening and tried to stop it and realized she just couldn’t.
I think they expected life to get calmer and more normal after Lover (because if you remember in the documentary, she says that it was probably her last time to be really successful. But the pandemic happened, so folklore and evermore happened, and folklore got AOTY, and her re-records also were a LOT bigger than she ever suspected (she has commented on this several times). I think she thought after Lover, she would just focus on her re-records and that her fame & demand would diminish a bit. Instead the exact opposite happened, she got much bigger (something I think neither expected) and Taylor ran with it (as she has a right too but she didn’t have to, so not sure here what she risked to keep the relationship going… and instead she just keeps apologizing (which she says in the song). I do think Joe loved regular Taylor but not celeb Taylor unfortunately and that was just never going to work.

Heartbreaking song! She obviously needs someone to choose her as she is! Seems she’s living her best life at the moment with her friends and people who support her! As much as I love Travis and he seems to be a good guy, I pray she’s not settling because of her age and wanting a family!
I may be in the minority here, but my opinion is if Joe didn't want to get married that is valid on his part (just going off that one line in the bridge, but there could have been any number of factors that led to the end). Certain lyrics suggest that he wanted to keep the status quo as it was, and he didn't understand why marriage was such a deal breaker for her. I give her kudos for breaking it off when she realized he couldn't give her what she wanted, but at the same time him not wanting to take that step is also his prerogative. Marriage isn't something that can be compromised on. I just see a lot of Joe-bashing in the comments (not necessarily on this video, just reaction comments in general), but I don't get the sense that that was her intent in the song. To me this came off as a relationship that had run its course, and while both parties have grown over the last 6 years it doesn't appear that they grew in the same direction. It's heartbreaking and disappointing, but sometimes love just isn't enough.

As I mentioned in my comment, I am just going off of what information is in the song and extrapolated from there. You have already decided he's the villain, and are projecting your own beliefs into his potential motivations or intentions. At the end of the day, neither one of us knows why their relationship failed, but immediately casting someone as the bad guy is childish.
