      +Lily Recchia one single home 3d printer can't build a complete 3d printer, the home models do pretty much only plastic, you need metals, circuit boards and lcd panels and all kinds of other electronics that would need a MUCH more expensive printer, it would be cheaper to buy a second one then to print anything more then the shell.

    • @Fontari
      @Fontari 9 лет назад +22

      I swear, I am not being critical but "our future is taking a turn for the worse right now" ? You are either very young or very unaware. Our future has been taking a turn for the worse for a very long time. Two cases , There are more diseases in this world right now than before most current drugs existed. Don't say "They were always there, we just didn't know it" History will teach you that is BS. All unarmed people in history were killed by the Government that unarmed them.

    • @Starteller
      @Starteller 9 лет назад +8

      How many knife killed people? How many cars? How many swimming pool? Should we ban the device or the person instead. Politicians murder thousands of people and they are not stopped. We need to stop the people who kill others not the ones who just want protection from them.

    • @marcushenness6437

      This is America there are more guns per person here than any other country in history and yet we don't have revolutions or anything like that. New York has the lowest crime rate it's had in centuries. Despite what people think and the media tells you crime rates in this country are the lowest they have been in 50 years. I don't mind people printing weapons because as I live in ohio I can go to any Gun & Knife Show and buy a weapon with just my drivers license. America was founded on weapons and a belief in using them for good and it will stay that way no matter what the Liberals want.

    • @marcushenness6437
      @marcushenness6437 9 лет назад +6

      ***** You do know that most crimes are not committed with guns right? In fact gun violence in The US is down from 1993 by 80%. 90% of violent crimes in the US do not involve firearms and 83% of criminals that had a gun on them while committing the crime did not use or threaten with the weapon. And before you say that the Gun & Knife Shows that i mentioned are where criminals get guns less than 0.7% of gun crimes are committed with weapons from these fine establishments.

    • @livefreeanddonttread
      @livefreeanddonttread 8 лет назад +12

      Eddy Sarmiento Well, my neighbor was home invaded, and him and his visiting sister were killed. My friend had someone pull up behind him and attempt to rob him behind his house. The guy on the loose near knoxville was armed, and my roommates friends that lived in that town were all scared, because none of them had guns. I dont know what it feels like to be afraid someone is going to invade my home. Because i have plenty of protection and defensive awareness. Crimes are going to happen. People can either be protected or not.

      Sorry for your lost but the statistics still say more people get kill by accident by other family members than by crooks. You want to protect yourself then be aware of your surroundings and don't give crooks an easy entry.

      There is no reasoning with these people.
      Just let them live under the rock they call America. If they feel "protected" by having a gun they obviously have their heads screwed on wrong. If my household required a gun to feel safe I would be getting my butt out of that town/ city/ country.

Of course that cant be done currently but in the future this will happen all the time. This is the future. We will even have 3D printers in our homes. This is the future

    • @ghossler
      @ghossler 10 лет назад +9

      i think everyone is pretty much knows this... but if you say this its like saying: oh teenagers can get their hands on weapons, drugs, alcohol etc, so why bother making up rules or laws to prevent them from getting them... lets just give them full acces.? The problem here is partial the fact that with the blueprints of a gun, they can 3d print it, but also the fact that if this is available it will make thing so much easier for everyone to get their hands on guns. They dont even have to go out or online to buy them, you can just print 1 in ur home. It's the acces to guns that becomes a problem i think

      ghossler There is something you need to understand here: Criminals do not follow laws. If they have the intent to kill someone, they will do so. Secondly, as an owner of a hobbyist-grade 3D printer, the technology costs as much or more than modern firearms. Sure, a criminal could buy a 3D printer and print a semi-functional gun that could only fire a few rounds, but with that same money he could buy a gun off of some thug on the streets.

    This got really dark when it got to the law student who wanted to make the gun. The interview seemed like it came from out of Criminal Minds. And also the way they directed the scene and emphasized the dark shadows just made him look super creepy and sociopathic. When he said "Hmm?" And raised his eyebrows at her, it was like he knew what she was imprint but wanted to avoid it.

      Take a look at the RepRap (self-REPlicating RAPid prototyping) system originally designed by Adrian Bowyer at the University of Bath in the UK. He shared this design open-source, and you can now fabricate all types of 3D printers using forked improved designs (Cartesian like the original, Delta like the Rostock, or even Polar like the Morgan). My co-author for "3D Printing for Dummies" recently released the 3DR RepRap variation when my students are building for our workshops. This is all 3D printed save for common hardware and electronics availalable at your local Radio Shack (braided fishing line, open-source Arduino controllers, stepper motors from old printers. etc) and can be built for under $200 USD. I have used these printers for everything up to printing Liberator handguns for law enforcement, all printed just using ABS plastic (like LEGO uses for its bricks) and PLA (biodegradable plastic made from plant sugars). WickedClownGrin A RepRap 3D Printer can be created using kits like the MendelMax and Rostock Max we used for the book "3D Printing for Dummies" or you can self-source the parts and build your own for around $300-500 USD all together. The more parts you can print instead of buying from the hardware store, the lower the cost, so designs like Richard's 3DR and the Tantillus are both going to be lower cost because you can make most of the printer from plastic. The highest cost items will generally be the electronics (a RAMBO board is ~$85 USD, while an Arduino Mega+RAMPS+stepper controllers can be found around $45 USD on eBay) and the stepper motors (Around $15 USD each, 4 required - 1 for each axis movement, 1 for the extruder). The extruder itself can be purchased for around $75 USD or you can make one if you have some basic machine tools and are fairly handy.

      I have sourced all my parts for less than $150. Pull the motors and precision rods out of printers(you can get them at the salvation army for next to nothing) Craigslist always has things on there for free. All you have to do is purchase the driver board, and if you want to go easy, buy the extruder head. The biggest investment is time.....

      Anna Wyant If you actually want to create something cool, I suggest spending the money on a good system to use it in the long run. The DIY makerbot took hours just to make something simple. I don't even use it now, I have the makerbot 2 and 2x. Its expensive but after a year I got tired of how slow the system works and how inpatient I was to print a single part.

    This law student from Austin did not seem "crazy" or "demented", even with the way they edited the interview to be against him. The only people who sound "crazy" are those pointing fingers and calling him a bad man. I believe there DEFINITELY needs to be regulations set on gun printing, the same way some people aren't allowed to buy guns NOW. But I can see how his idea of making a gun available to be made from home is a great idea and completely understandable. And this lady was very rude, I think, to blatantly portray it in negative light and say that he was doing a BAD thing, in comparison to making a nose or an ear. A gun is a form of protection. And maybe some of those injured people missing skin or body parts, wouldn't NEED to print off new parts had they had a gun to protect themselves.The only time it becomes a BAD thing is when an idiot user abuses it. People need to stop allowing themselves to be brainwashed to believe guns are bad and take an unbiased look at BOTH sides of the story.

    When we start traveling to Mars and other places we will take printers of all different sizes (consumables) and bigger units for housing. One or two unmanned trips with the printers. Set them up and just keep shipping material via a tube through the atmosphere on a trajectory. Let the units print unattended and prepping for inhabitants. Change projects once item counts are completed. The larger units can create protected housing of maybe 5+ stories. That material could have protective features embedded for radiation protection. These units could be on a track and build as we travel there.

      Spuffy Gotta There are multiple reasons why his idea wouldn't work. But its true, even if it did work, and you successfully made an exact copy of a deceased person's frontal and temporal lobes, you would bring them back to life, relatively speaking, but you also wouldn't. The original human being you knew and loved would still be dead. You would just be stuck with a copy to keep yourself satisfied. So yes, you're right; we couldn't literally bring someone back if we DID have the technology. In a way, it is "playing God."

    The guy who's trying to make guns has a pretty good logic imo, "I don't think you should be armed, but I think you should have the choice to be"
    They're trying to make him sound worse than he is.

    I don't know about this one. Calling it a printer? I think it needs to be called a duplicator. Making your own firearm is not illegal? But making explosives is.. hmm

    Imagine this technology becoming so advanced, it can manipulate atoms and create things on the molecular level.
    Literally giving us Star Trek's replicators. Something like this can end world poverty, overnight.

    in the USA ANYONE can go to a gun store and buy a gun unless your a convicted criminal so I don't see the big deal here, and criminals get there weapons illegally anyway.

    • @TToTToTT
      @TToTToTT 10 лет назад

      thats just the usa and in certain states.. not other countries.
      "criminals get their weapons illegally anyway".
      Not all criminals have access to illegal weapons. Allowing the printing of guns in any household isn't going to solve the problem either, its only sure to cause more problems as the availability of weapons get more accessible, it would only have a higher probability of it falling into bad hands.
      Moreover, If guns can be easily printed and manufactured by anyone through 3d printing in the usa, u can expect much more smuggling of such weapons into other countries all around the world. And then u have the same problem of drug smuggling all over again.

    • @ShizSmitty
      @ShizSmitty 10 лет назад +1

      It's appauling how the media treats the subject of firearms. You're right on point in the fact that criminals, and those planning to commit crimes get their guns ILLEGALLY! Why would someone planning to commit a crime want a paper trail that traces them to the gun they use? Even if it's a store recipt for a gun, it's a record of when and where a specific gun was purchased.Most stores have security cameras so even in states with minimal gun laws, criminals still buy their guns on the black market.

    • @Djluv5
      @Djluv5 10 лет назад

      another simple view that u seem to not comprehend.. kids.. they can't buy they can't get it illegaly except if their parents have it.. if one kids bring a printed gun to school, others will try to follow.. and from there you can see where this is goin...

    • @ShizSmitty
      @ShizSmitty 10 лет назад

      Djluv5 Well it sure seems like parents have to start being parents and take responsibility for their childrens actions as well as their own. It's not the governments nor societies job to raise your children, it's the parents job. If they don't want to be bothered with raising their children and teaching them right from wrong then they shouldn't choose to have kids. Put responsibility where it belongs. It takes a village to raise a child when you live in villages but when you live in the developed world and the United States it takes parents to raise a child.
